    I'm painting a lot of that poly decking 15 years after installation. Just for the sake of honesty. I understand that 15 years is pretty good for the decking planks, but still it might be good to train people to expect a greyed cedar deck look, that's a material that really lasts.

    I’ve learned a lot from Tommy since I was a kid. The one technique I’ve never agreed with is pitching the deck for drainage. The gaps in the deck boards allow for drainage. I prefer a perfectly level deck. The only exception would be a 3 season screened deck without gaps in the decking.

    • @ryan17954
      @ryan17954 2 роки тому +1

      Porches are built with pitch? Why would a deck not be? Not all decks are built with pressure treated wood either. And being Tommy is from Massachusetts, where there are 4 changing seasons, winter with lots of snow that does a number on decks.

    Why didn't you use the hammer drill to drive in the wedge anchors?
    Set the hammer drill to the hammer mode after drilling the hole. Light pressure on the top of the wedge anchor bolt will drive it in quickly.
    A millwright taught me that trick a few years ago. It's very efficient.
    Especially if you carry the hammer drill, impact, and the wedge anchors (in a roofing nail pouch) all on 1 good belt.

      International building code states you need to be below your frost line here in New England that is usually about 48 inches but also you need to have the bottoms flared wider to prevent the post space from being pushed up by Concrete HHI‘s so if you use a 1 foot elephant foot base with a 12 inch sono tube 4 foot long And with an extended about 6 inches above finish grade you should be within code compliance but always check your local building codes to make sure that you are correct because if you’re not it’s gonna be one big headache to remove the post base to ensure proper code compliance

    I think I would have taken a piece of the board and used it as a spacer to begin driving the screws in, then, once all the screws are started, the spacer will remain in place and you can just slide the next board in place without having to worry that the spacer will fall out as the board the spacer is inserted too, and the screw, will keep the spacer in it's place.

    Just did a Trex deck sort of like this at my cabin in NC. I was under the impression you have to install tar paper on the joists before installing the decking for rot prevention.

    • @kylegrimm8808
      @kylegrimm8808 3 роки тому +1

      I don't know where that came from, but I don't see the advantage. The pt wood is made for direct ground contact. I would say the idea came from the days cedar or doug fir framing that can rot when saturated. If anything it would cause issues today. Decking materials need to dryout, 15lb paper isn't going to keep the top of that joist dry.

    • @nh39308
      @nh39308 3 роки тому

      That is usually an added step from the contractor on installation some of us older guys are used to putting in the tarpaper under the decking I prefer to do it all the time so this way here when the client looks down onto the deck they don’t see the green spacing between the deck boards and yes it does ensure a longer life of your pressure treated joists

    • @davidduryea6821
      @davidduryea6821 Рік тому

      Placing tape over the joists lengthens the life of the deck. Pressure treated wood can rot too if constantly exposed to moisture. Granted it will take quite a while, but why not go the extra step to extend the life of a beautiful deck?

      TLDR: fancy brushless technology and better battery and some sort of internal brains.
      Motor Technology:
      Fuel Line: Uses POWERSTATE™ brushless motors which provide higher efficiency, longer lifespan, and better performance.
      Other Lines: May include tools with brushed or brushless motors, but not the specialized POWERSTATE™ brushless motors found in the Fuel line.
      Electronics:
      Fuel Line: Equipped with RedLink Plus Intelligence, an advanced electronic system for optimized performance and protection against overload, overheating, and over-discharge.
      Other Lines: May have basic RedLink Intelligence but not the enhanced RedLink Plus system.
      Battery Technology:
      Fuel Line: Primarily uses REDLITHIUM™ batteries which offer longer run time, more power, and longer life compared to standard lithium-ion batteries.
      Other Lines: May use standard lithium-ion batteries or other variations of Milwaukee’s battery technology.
      Performance and Durability:
      Fuel Line: Designed for maximum performance and heavy-duty use, providing higher torque, faster speeds, and more robust construction.
      Other Lines: May be designed for lighter-duty applications and not as focused on delivering the highest possible performance metrics.
      Target Users:
      Fuel Line: Geared towards professional tradespeople and users who require top-tier performance and durability.

    If the concrete guy is going to be that sloppy in his work, better size up your column footers for more tolerance.

      @Crotch Banister Yes they were: "Trex Decking Tiki Torch - Composite Deck Board Sample". I just ordered some samples at the moment. Will see how it will cope under the elements before I go on a full swing purchase mode.

      @Crotch Banister 🤣 🤣That's exactly what I'm trying to avoid - "Regret!" - On the reviews I read which were probably fake 5/5 market gimmick reviews, one reviewer who gave the product a 1/5 mentioned the boards didn't even last a year and they started warping. Another mentioned that the color is just a 3 coat layer and is not penetrated to the wood. This got me a little skeptical especially considering the Texas unpredictable weather with summer temps of 102+. I'm looking forward to start my project next summer, if the trex doesn't favor I will just fall back to treated wood. I will keep you posted about the samples though.

      And, have "we" noticed that engineered timber and synthetic "timbers" are being incorporated into construction more and more.
      I wonder if one day we see an entire house being constructed by a gigantic 3D printer controlled by an AI?
      Simply tell the AI (verbally?) what you want including dimensions and let it get on with it ... I'm only half joking by the way ...
