My father built two decks around our house one summer when I was kid. This really makes me appreciate what he did. Because he made it seem like it was just another day in the park.
I found the chapters in ua-cam.com/users/postUgkxYGamVaHfdHiPlAQaLa7zkwR02OKpGYDU to be very relevant to my project as I embarked on building my first ever structure from the ground up. I especially found this Ryan’s Shed Plans to be of great use when it came to building the roof. I was able to do all the cuts and installation by myself, with a little reference to this Ryan’s Shed Plans.
One of the most straight forward, comprehensive videos I’ve seen explaining each step…and I’ve built decks before. Very well done without making the video unnecessarily long like others.
Larry Haun taught me what my father never did.
This guy is to the point, practical, step by step, and even puts in some humor and humility.
A teacher of teachers while being single handedly a mentor to hundreds of thousands that will never get to meet him in person to shake his hand or give him a hug. Shout out to this channel for keeping it all flowing.
I thank you one and all who keep this content posted.
This DIY home improvement video on deck building was fantastic. It not only saved me a ton of money on labor but also gave me the confidence to take on more DIY projects. Highly recommended!
I’ve seen a lot of bull shit decks that are easily done, lazy craftsmanship. Though this video is a little on the advanced side. This is a legit deck. It really doesn’t get much better than this. It was brilliantly laid out. No chatter. No dumb music. Thanks for sharing this. I’ve watched over 30 videos tonight and this is the one.
How can people legally get away with all the permits and codes. Do they just not ever planning to sell the house so it doesn’t matter
They dont it bites them in the ass when the property value is assesed and the plans dont show a deck than they get fined ans it has to be inspected ans than they get a permit@carlindurfee7566
This comment def reps how I feel. It was a solid no bs instructional. Well done by the creator.
😆 no dumb music.. dumb music should be against code
@@carlindurfee7566have you ever bought an older house? No one checks permits on anything
I started my deck about 2 weeks ago following this video and oh my god I feel like superman! Super easy to follow and while it will take some time (5 foot woman with not much for strength) for me to finish, I'm very excited! I've gotten more help with the sections I don't feel comfortable doing and I'm having someone build the stairs for me since I don't even want to attempt that and mess up what I've done. This is tiring work but has been worth it already. THANK YOU!!! Anybody that thinks you can't do this, you're more than wrong! You can! And you will! So satisfying!
So glad to hear that. Enjoying your finished deck will be 10 times more rewarding since you built it!
How much is it costing you?
Thank you for not adding obnoxious music to your montage. It makes it so much more enjoyable to watch.
As a self-made handyperson, this was the best and most helpful deck video yet. The key points that you touched on pretty much answered all of the detail I have been struggling with ie ending with a full deck board
Amazing! You saved my new job with this video. I'm a project manager of a small construction company. I have to bid out all materials and labor. I haven't done this in 20 yrs since my husband passed. We had our own small construction company. God Bless You my dear!
Tip for those building a deck.. Increase the beam size using a free beam calculator like forte, increases the distance it can span unsupported.. Then you don't have to dig as many footings. Cost is usually a wash. Great video!
Man i swear , i did framing with my step father for 3 years and hated every day of it , but could never figure out why. Then i watch this man's videos and realise that everything we did was the hard way not the smart way.
Because nobody pays their bills in construction that's why I quit in the 90s and started driving semi no more begging for your paycheck
This kind of work is perfect for people that have a serious passion for what they do. Working with people who aren’t trying to push their craft and challenging themselves on every job to do it the best they can do is a drag and discouraging
Those footings are massive! As a deck builder Its rare to find a customer who is comfortable with the extra cost. Im glad to see you put in the extra effort and didnt shy away from a difficult task! Keep up the good work!
Very good demonstration of how to build a "floating" deck with no ledger board connection. Makes it easier because you don't have to worry about properly sealing/flashing the ledger which a lot of people don't get right. I would much rather dig extra footings than use a ledger connection.
My wife and I just bought a house. I haven’t done anything like this before. But I’m going to give it a try
any updates? did you get the deck built ?
This was so therapeutic to watch. Possibly the best deck in the World Wide Web. The fact you have shown one does not need a beer to complete an exemplary task. Thank you for your craftsmanship for sharing your unique skill.
Wife bought me my first tool set today. Taking it back in the morning after watching this.
Ha ha what did you get? What do you have now?
@@Mike-gz4xn Ryobi at the time. Now i have Milwaukee.

Such a gorgeous book - each shed is unique and inspiring, and I love all the tiny details Kotite features to help readers imagine how to create their own She Sheds ua-cam.com/users/postUgkxe9yi0sulKgsp0VJJCIrLWWkvVqcU7LFR . The feature on Dinah's Rustic Retreat is like something from a fairy tale. It's really inspiring to see how creative all these ordinary people are in making beautiful and useful spaces on a modest scale.
No matter how we all ended up here, we're glad we did! Thanks Third Coast Craftsman, this was very educational.
Thanks to your help, I was able to complete my deck in just under 17 minutes!
what size is the deck and how many people on the job. a 12f X 16f deck takes 4 guys 1 and a half days to complete
There's always that one guy whose head it just flies right over

Lax God It’s a joke 😆
This is perhaps the best video I've seen on building the foundation for a deck.
This was by far the best video of building a diy free standing deck on UA-cam. I just completed the demo of my crumbling concrete steps and built a small 6’x7’ porch following this video. Only difference was that my beams and deck board run parallel to the house instead of perpendicular.
I noticed he never used a level upon building the foundation, can u pls explain why not..I'm a novice.
Ty
@@joshgold6165 He leveled the line after pouring the concrete and cut the supporting posts tot the height of the line. Each post might be a different height because of diffferences in the concrete height, but the tops will be level (with a deliberate, slight downslope for rain runoff)
Just built my first 8x8 floating deck just on deck blocks for a mobile home. My Bosch dot laser was a game changer to shoot in the height of my posts. I learned alot from this video to make things easier for next time. So thank you.
I don’t understand why anyone could dislike this video. You guys did an amazing job. Great commentary also.
I know this posted 4 years ago, but thank you so much for explaining every step of the way💜💜
One thing you did wrong. I didn't see a beer throughout the entire video. You can't build an outdoor structure, without the presence of a frosty beverage.
What about 16:02 ?
@@meelis79 It could be. I'm not sure. It could be a Red Bull. Or, it could be a Coors Light. Coors Light still doesn't qualify as beer, however. But, good eye.

Ah such a good comment! Now the real question is.... IPA, or no IPA?🤔
Perfect timing brother. I’m making one very soon.
I hope you got your building permit.

Late to the party but wanted to let you know you are a great teacher! I appreciate your eye for detail and the craftsmanship of your work!!
13:02 ...why i love the metric system....great job btw
that's nothing, wait till you do some strenght calculations in mechanical engineering, thank god i'm schooled in metric... all kinds of crazy correction factors
60/4=15 ... so 15 free to 13 full ... easy quick mental calculation so I learned that ... am German
Exactly
metric better anyways
That spacer looks rougly 99mm wide
Pretty good video. Bonus for telling people to let the wood season before coating with anything. One issue though, in all my years of construction the one thing an inspector will tell you to correct, is the lack of gap in the decking. You could be fishing those boards out of the ocean, but it's still better to finish nail as a spacer to avoid a headache.
All done without a framing nailer, palm nailer and GRK lag bolts. Oh and last but not least a quick drive for the floor boards. You guys are awesome!
You know it's late when you're watching ''how to build a deck'' when you dont even own a house!

Vlad, could not have said it better myself!
Now that's how you build a sturdy good quality deck. Great job! Best I've seen.
@LOWES get my man a bigger miter saw!!! This was a great video explaining this process. I am currently stressing building a new deck and this has really helped me calm my jets. Thanks brother.
I love your work and your dog he is the Best inspector
This is the Cleanest & beautiful deck building tutorial I have ever seen , jesus ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
Never seen the speed square under the tape trick when laying out your joists. Looks very effective!
Nice video! No need for the joist hangers on the rim board though. I guess you could use them upside down since the rim board is hanging from the joists. Hangers are only necessary if the joist is butting into its support piece without being supported within 4’ of the connection.
I wish I’d seen this comment before building my deck. The upside down joist hanger is a pretty good idea. You could use them for and they would provide extra support for the rim joist, facing, and rails. They could also be easier to attach. The main thing they do right side up is help align your nails for toenailing on the inside of the rim. Doing that also does attach the hanger to the joist, which then is attached to the rim. So that does provide some support but not as much as the other way.
2:49 this is why you put flashing up under the existing siding going over the top of ledger board of the deck.
Water ran back towards the house in this case and rotted out the deck ledger and house rim joist
I just spent 16 minutes watching you build a deck, I regret nothing
As someone who inspects construction for a living, this was fun to watch! :)
I about to build a deck for my swimming pool. The information here is pure gold.
Make sure to ask your local inspector.....you’re a funny guy
My local what?

I did ask Inspector Clooso and he recommended a haambuuga.

This is the best video I've seen on the basics of this project. Will be watching it about 20 more times before we start ours this spring! Thanks so much!
Thank you for sharing the Lowes Deck Builder. I really appreciate it
This was freakin perfect. Well laid out steps to follow, the way shots were filmed and their transition, and the way you speak flows. Thank you! Retreat center projects in the redwoods!
Graet job! I hope that the gaps between boards will be wide enough for wood movement. Regards!
Also needs more spacing to avoid the buildup of moisture. A strong, nice deck don't mean shit if the wood rots slowly over the next couple of years.
Yeah he screwed up there. You gap the boards with a speed square when they are NOT dry, that way you will always have a gap for drainage.
I learned more from this video than in a dozen other videos I’ve seen on UA-cam.
I knew I had to hire someone to build my deck as soon as he said parallelogram.
🤣
My thoughts exactly. My ruler only goes up to 2 feet.
@@markweinreb2807 You mean 4 inches BAHAHAH!

Yesssss lol
Wow someone that knows what they are talking about. I'm in the trade and I laugh at 90% of the videos I watch. You are very informative and thorough. I enjoyed the video, great work!
If your in the trade then you should know this deck is very cheap and half assed lmao
I agree I'm in the trade and this is the standard way to build a deck and it's very well explained except for the Hangers wich are unnecessary
Thanks. I am a General but mostly a maintenance Carpenter.
I do lots of deficiencies, and a ton of installations.
I watched the entire video, because currently rebuilding a deck and I wanted a review.
As I’m sure you know

lol...building permit. Thats cute.
I hated every time he said "code" and "permit". Ok, lets call the inspector to see if this is secure. Worst case is you break a leg if you fall but that's solely your responsibility of using a deck. You can opt to not use it xD
@@scientist100 I dont know what part of florida he lives in but in my area its a fat ass fine. I cant get rid of my trees without having to ask permission and I have to replace them with another tree.
He prolly just wants to make sure so a 5k fine doesnt show up at his house.
scientist100 I mean.... he isn’t going to make a video and say that he doesn’t care if you follow code. Someone watching could come back saying they watched his video and something could come back on him for false information. And since he recorded building it, he could’ve been fined if they reported the video not following major safety requirements
To be fair, if its unpermitted, you're gonna have a tough task selling it. You are gonna have to demo it before it would qualify for most financing. The value a PERMITTED deck adds to your home value, offsets the ass pain to get it.
Almost all cities have permit requirements to build a deck. Decks 200sq ft or larger and/or attached to the house require a permit
Great build and simple explanations. One thing to mention, and maybe I missed it, is to call utility companies to come mark lines before digging post footings. Always learn something watching your vids. Thanks man.
Always call Dig Safe before hand, indeed.
Because of you I now build decks enjoying the awesomeness of great pay and my own schedule 😲 thanks cousin!
Great video I love how you explain the math and steps - I really liked the railing explanation. Nice job and Love your dog, he's quite the stickler for making sure your work is impeccable!

I would like to suggest incorporating benches into the railings because, that nice big deck is going to get real small
after they add furniture, a grill, coolers, and friends!
This was one of the most informative videos I've seen so far, thank you!
Anyone can do this. But you have to believe in yourself and be willing to be teachable. Have a blessed one.
Really nice work!! Thanks the most for mentioning the deck builder app on Lowes web site!!
Thanks for making this video! I just finished my deck-build this weekend based on this design, and I consulted this video probably 1000 times to finish my project. Thanks for making this content!
good video, tape the threads on studs, it helps putting the nut on keeping the concrete off when you remove the tape
Finally someone who kinda knows how to build a deck made a video on how to build a deck.
Bro, this was super succinct. Thank you! I've watched a dozen such tutorials and this is the best one so far! The others seemed to assume the viewer knew a bunch of this stuff already and made assumptions/left things out. You kept your explanations short enough that an experienced builder wouldn't feel like he was back in kindergarten, while still making it clear for novices like me. Very well done!
Should do a video on building a deck around a hot tub. It's insane on how many people have to idea how to build around the tub. You have get in all around the hot tub if any repairs come up.
The single best deck build video I have seen! Well done Chris and thank you for ALL of the information and video footage. Very helpful!
Interesting how watching a DYI deck building video convinced me to hire a professional 😳
Was thinking the same
great job guys, i am building a deck at my daughter's house and this video helps me a lot
That is a nice project and I am viewing this video because I want to add a small deck on the back of my house. I hired one guy to make steps for my front, but want to do this myself and in the process save money also.
Sidney Mathious Do it my man! It may not be perfect. But it’ll be yours. Be safe!
it's funny how the dog is literally inspecting everything lol
That's the "building inspector" he keeps mentioning
My dog does the same.
Excellent Deck! Would have suggested to the customer incorporating bench seating into the railings, because that big beautiful deck is gonna get really small after they fill it with furniture, a grill, coolers, plants, and friends
Thanks for this video! Used it as a reference for today. My 11 year old son and I needed to build a smaller deck. Thank you!

@@chrisvegaofficial5811 , but then you have to go back and repair it when she's not around...
This is AWSOME where was this technology 30 yrs ago the only thing I can see I would’ve done was I would’ve added vents in the underskirt ing plus the board that went up against the concrete I would’ve painted it to help it from rotting but I love this thanks for sharing
Great video! One of these days I’ll get around to rebuilding my deck and I’ll refer back to this again. Thanks!
Only negative is the deck floor so close and level with the home entrance. If not in area with a lot of rain or snow, it should be fine. If so, it may cause problems down the road...even with the slope.
I did enjoy watching this video and I learned some things.
Great overall explanation to building a deck. At first I thought this was a giant commercial for Lowes, but by the end I was pleasantly impressed.

I've never seen a deck build without attaching the ledger board to the house. I never knew that was an option. Thanks for the video. Nice job.
Wonder if he did but didn’t show it. Either way I didn’t see any flashing on the ledger board. If it’s a freestanding deck which does not require the ledger board be attached, I would think you’d see a gap between the house and ledger board. Good video though.
