These are so much better than the dozens of channels just riffing off specs and talking about basic stuff nearly anybody can just assume given the specs. These real world tests reveal SO much more that people will actually encounter.
The Sony was hands-down the winner for me, especially in video. Even in camera mode, it has a slight bloom which is perfect for portraits and light sources. This was surprising.
Not sure if you monitor these comments, but I just wanted to thank you for all of your videos on entry-level cameras. Beats the hell out of perusing forum posts, and has ultimately led me to the decision to go with the Sony ZV-E10. The time and effort put into this video (and others) is definitely appreciated! So this would be nice to be able to change the depth of field, whenever I need to.
As a beginner, I really like the photos taken by the M50. Looks really professional out of the box. Just a shame that the 4k video is extremely inconsistent, since I'll be using it for videos as well.

For the Color Science and the Menu (user experience) Points goes to Canon. But for overall better camera I would go with Sony with better/ faster Auto focus and webcam capabilities right out the box & not to mention the downsampling of 6k to 4k - also better lens range for me (in Pakistan)

While I now use the Sony A7IV, my first camera (that was not a cell phone) was the M50. The Sigma 16 and the Canon 32 1.4 gave me really good video, imo. Yes, the whole 4K issue sucks, and the battery life is not great, but it’s a very good camera for enthusiasts who don’t want to schill out thousands of dollars. Great job on the video-that definitely must have been a pain to edit!!
This is an older video but thanks for the comparison! I know most people are saying the M50 is at a disadvantage because it can’t produce reliable 4k but I’ve noticed that most of UA-cam still shoots in 1080p and I’ve heard the average vlogger refer to the M50 as a camera with better quality than the g7x. I’ve been shooting with the M50 for 3 years and I still think it’s a great little camera! And now that it’s older the used market has them selling for around $400 😊 For a hobbyist I think it’s great for the price now.
Hey Mark, great videos, really helpful. I have been using my iPhone to create content on my channel for over 10 years and I don’t think it has lost me any subscribers, I’m of the opinion, that content is what matters. Having said that there is an amateur look with phones, ie no bokeh etc which really does bring something to the table. I know I have to upgrade at some stage, but I am really going to miss how convenient my phone is, ie audio directly in, no syncing necessary etc, no real camera knowledge required. Honestly I don’t have the time to study photography, but I need to up the production. I’ve heard so many good things about the Sony and would like to go that route. Can you advise me on some of the basics I would need to know, to get started ? Problem with UA-cam can be that you make your mind up on one thing and then you come across lots of others saying don’t get that get this ! Anyways thanks for this really helpful.
Interesting comparison! The M50 still looks quite good imo. Currently the ZV-E10 is smartest choice by far, especially when you take the lens ecosystem into account. Your test clearly shows the main differences between a smartphone vs aps-c vs fullframe camera.

Budget wise… can I manipulate settings and use the kit lens for cooking videos where person is in shot talking and doing demo. Or should I scrape together cash for a better lens? And which one?
The ZV-E10 dynamic range makes the images look so much pleasing (light & colors) compared to the M50. But the M50 has better contrast due to its lack of shadow information in HDR. This is a matter of preference

Great comparison, I'm a Canon user and own a 6D, two 7Ds and I'm on my second M50, the (MkII), the first one took a bath in salt water when I fell while stepping on a rock while vacationing on a Colombian island, it wasn't pretty when it came out of the water. I love the M50 but the 4k focus does suck and so does the crop but it takes great photos and it's way smaller than my other cameras and perfect when I'm travelling on my motorcycle. The first M50 survived a trip on the back of my motorcycle from NJ all the way to Ushuaia, Argentina but the salt water in Colombia did it 😁 BTW, love your videos and the best part is when you say "I don't care, do what you want" that's real honesty 🤣

Some interesting stuff. Overall, as a ZV-E10 owner (luckily) I am very happy. But some things I noticed, like in the full auto (which I know none of us use) was how much flaring there was for the Sony in such a setting with very little variable (I assume because exposure is weighted for what is in focus, and that is you and you are light skinned). Also, computational photography is amazing, and I expect more cameras to move this way or at least start making the option available for more automatic modes. And, I always preferred Canon color over Sony (even back in the earliest studio camera, ENG/EFP days. Sony leans towards cooler blue/yellow hues - supposedly because of Asian skin tones- where Canon was always warmer red/orange). I shoot 4k since that is what I bought the camera for, but I am impressed with the general quality of the 1080p. I LOVE using the iPhone for my tennis channel videos because the 4k60 and 1080/120 or even 240 is amazing for viewing small nuance movements in technique for teaching. And then, iphone stabilization is something I hope DSLR mirrorless manfs can learn from. No reasons a little more processing power can't be thrown in and gyro to the same kind of results. I know purists will disagree with some of the above, and I tend towards that too, but with the changing use of cameras I think having the option to use those technologies in the cameras when needed or appropriate is the change we need. Can always go to M and set everything, right? Cheers. Great stuff as always.
Thank you for doing this low-light test, it was really interesting. There is another notable camera review person who swears that the Apple Iphone's camera are the best thing since "sliced bread." But I have other less notable people, ie ordinary people who regards Iphone camera as marginal in low-light, and now I can see why. No matter how smart the AI software is, it can't compensate for a teeny, tiny sensor. For those of you who need camera for low-light, I suggest the Sony ZV-E10's big brother the A6600, It has the higher capacity battery found in the Sony FX cameras. The A6600's sensor is a bit dated, but still quite capable. The A6600 has a native ISO of 100-32,000(same as the ZV-E10), and it also has an extended 50-102,400, 102,400 is a bit grainy but still useable. The IBIS(in-body image stabilization) IMHO is a bit overhyped. For low-light with Sony APS-C cameras I highly recommend the Sigma high-speed lenses, I have the Sigma 16mm F/1.4 it works great.
I have the gold iPhone 13 Pro and because I’m into music I’m thinking about starting a UA-cam channel in January so I’m going with the ZV-E10 for Christmas because of the video quality
Great video. Very useful to first time camera peeps. I had the M50 for a bit. But, it was that part about losing the reliable AF in 4K that ultimately lead to my dropping the M50. But, for many new UA-cam creators, the M50 in 1080p is not such a bad thing. Great content as usual.

I would recommend shooting at 30 or 24 fps anyway - 60 frames is good for when you want to slow footage down - but generally not for regular motion. I would recommend either the new canon R10 or R7 or a Sony ZV-E10, or even full frame Sony A7C. The Canon m50 will only be reliably able to shoot in 1080 because it loses good autofocus in 4k
Great comparison. The best I’ve seen so far. iPhone is great for point and shoot, canon have lovely colors and it’s better on the photography side while sony is best for vlogging . After all it all comes down to who operate the device

Don’t worry about the iPhone. The S21/22 will be as good or better. Get the phone you like and concentrate on the cameras with interchangeable lenses - that’s where you’ll see the real improvement (once you learn a few basics).

You can't even get the ZVE 10 right now. Been thinking about it but can not find it. I will say it does well in the studio just wish it had better stab.

Out of the two, I would go with the m50 for photography because it has a viewfinder and a nicer screen. These help a lot when composing your pictures. Both cameras will get you a good sharp image if you have a good lens.If you want a Sony, you should look at the a6100 as well as it is affordable and has the same sensor as the zv-e10. It lacks some of the video features, but it is better for photography because it has the EVF like the m50

First off, a very comprehensive & useful test. To me the iPhone video always looked over-processed, the skin artificially smoothened out, especially inside (where you just looked flat & pasty (begging your pardon)). The Canon's kit lens seemed sharper than the Sony's (outside). Skin looked the best on the Canon, though less so inside (still showed colour though). Canon had the best 1080p and Sony the best 4K (not least because of the better autofocus at 4K).
Even though M50 is much older now than the ZV-10. So for a beginner that is not invested in anything lens wise, id totally recommend ZV-10 first. BUT mostly if your gonna do more of post work in editing software. Otherwise you get so much with just a 13 pro which i have myself. just upgrade it with gear around it :) // A Canon m50 user since 8 months

it is a great camera for photos. get the sigma 56mm 1.4 for canon ! mount and your portraits will be amazing. get the sigma 16mm 1.4 for M mount for landscapes. that will compete with the best of the best.

Very informative video. The iPhone 13 pro and all the other iPhone 13 series phones give very good dynamic range in high dynamic range situations. Can the iPhone produce a better dynamic range than the slog3 of Sony cameras? Or it can't even compete with HLG3 in terms of dynamic range in high dynamic range situations?
The iPhone can’t really compete with the larger sensor cameras. Even if the dynamic range is measured technically higher than some cameras, the small sensor will struggle compared to larger sensor cameras that capture more light. The iPhone makes up for a lot with computational photography and can be great in certain situations, but there’s a reason professional photographers and videographers always use a good camera. The bigger sensor just gives a better image to work with.

you can transfer the files for sure, just get an sd card reader for your iPad. put the sd card in that and put the files on your iPad and edit in whatever app you want.
I have many doubts and it seems that neither of them will answer me. I work mostly shooting night parties, where it's low light (but I'm aware that I'm going to use lighting like a LED stick for example) and I'll have to do fast movements, because my edits I like to catch fast camera movements like jumping and dancing. The second point is that I use slow motion a lot because some dance moves look really good with slow motion and the 1080p of these two cameras looks bad without counting the jelly effect. So which camera should I start researching?
Great video and all good choices for beginners! Being a 60 year old man I vote for the Canon M50 in it's awesome true (not line skipped from 4K) 1080p. Amazing Canon color science and my skin tones look natural and spot-on, what I see in the mirror with daylight coming through the window, daylight, not weird and pinkish like when using my wife's 4K camera. On my worst day I can't look bad with that M50! 4K video on my face exaggerates every tiny skin pore or blemish- with the Canon M50, at 60 years old, I can still be a handsome devil ha ha! All hail Canon 1080p!
You’ll get the hang of it. It’s probably lighting - good lighting is the key to good footage. Get a nice softbox to soften the light and shoot outside at golden hour and it’ll make a huge difference.
Thanks! This was really, really useful. My conclusion is actully that I didn't want any of them. The Sony looked SOOOOOO much better on paper, but in reality I prefer the Canon image and fuller sound spectrum. Back to the drawing board for me! :)

wow ZVE10 out the box defiantly looks better than Canon or Phone...crazy. Only thing is I wish my ZVE10 could do HDR like iphone does...get clouds detail and foreground etc in high brights and low darks.
You can do a version of that. Bracketing on the ZV-E10 will merge several photos over different exposures to get an HDR image. You will have to merge them yourself using a program like Lightroom however

Just do the kit lens first and then decide what focal length you like and you can upgrade the lens later

And then, iphone stabilization is something I hope DSLR mirrorless manfs can learn from. No reasons a little more processing power can't be thrown in and gyro to the same kind of results. I know purists will disagree with some of the above, and I tend towards that too, but with the changing use of cameras I think having the option to use those technologies in the cameras when needed or appropriate is the change we need. Can always go to M and set everything, right? Cheers. Great stuff as always.

Thank you for doing this low-light test, it was really interesting. There is another notable camera review person who swears that the Apple Iphone's camera are the best thing since "sliced bread." But I have other less notable people, ie ordinary people who regards Iphone camera as marginal in low-light, and now I can see why. No matter how smart the AI software is, it can't compensate for a teeny, tiny sensor.
For those of you who need camera for low-light, I suggest the Sony ZV-E10's big brother the A6600, It has the higher capacity battery found in the Sony FX cameras. The A6600's sensor is a bit dated, but still quite capable. The A6600 has a native ISO of 100-32,000(same as the ZV-E10), and it also has an extended 50-102,400, 102,400 is a bit grainy but still useable. The IBIS(in-body image stabilization) IMHO is a bit overhyped. For low-light with Sony APS-C cameras I highly recommend the Sigma high-speed lenses, I have the Sigma 16mm F/1.4 it works great.

Great video. Very useful to first time camera peeps. I had the M50 for a bit. But, it was that part about losing the reliable AF in 4K that ultimately lead to my dropping the M50. But, for many new UA-cam creators, the M50 in 1080p is not such a bad thing. Great content as usual.

I currently shoot video with my iPhone 13 Pro MAX at 4K at 60 frames. Do you think a Canon M50 will help me to have better videos considering that it records at 4K but at 30 frames? If I want to improve my videos, which camera do you recommend?
I would recommend shooting at 30 or 24 fps anyway - 60 frames is good for when you want to slow footage down - but generally not for regular motion. I would recommend either the new canon R10 or R7 or a Sony ZV-E10, or even full frame Sony A7C. The Canon m50 will only be reliably able to shoot in 1080 because it loses good autofocus in 4k

Great comparison. The best I’ve seen so far. iPhone is great for point and shoot, canon have lovely colors and it’s better on the photography side while sony is best for vlogging . After all it all comes down to who operate the device

Don’t worry about the iPhone. The S21/22 will be as good or better. Get the phone you like and concentrate on the cameras with interchangeable lenses - that’s where you’ll see the real improvement (once you learn a few basics).

I am a beginner in photography and I am looking for a mirrorless camera solely for photography. Can you tell me which camera, Sony ZV E10 or Canon M50 Mark ii, is better for photography including low light performance? Which camera produces a sharper image? Or are both cameras equally good when it comes to photography?
Out of the two, I would go with the m50 for photography because it has a viewfinder and a nicer screen. These help a lot when composing your pictures. Both cameras will get you a good sharp image if you have a good lens.If you want a Sony, you should look at the a6100 as well as it is affordable and has the same sensor as the zv-e10. It lacks some of the video features, but it is better for photography because it has the EVF like the m50

First off, a very comprehensive & useful test. To me the iPhone video always looked over-processed, the skin artificially smoothened out, especially inside (where you just looked flat & pasty (begging your pardon)). The Canon's kit lens seemed sharper than the Sony's (outside). Skin looked the best on the Canon, though less so inside (still showed colour though). Canon had the best 1080p and Sony the best 4K (not least because of the better autofocus at 4K).

Even though M50 is much older now than the ZV-10. So for a beginner that is not invested in anything lens wise, id totally recommend ZV-10 first. BUT mostly if your gonna do more of post work in editing software. Otherwise you get so much with just a 13 pro which i have myself. just upgrade it with gear around it :) // A Canon m50 user since 8 months

it is a great camera for photos. get the sigma 56mm 1.4 for canon ! mount and your portraits will be amazing. get the sigma 16mm 1.4 for M mount for landscapes. that will compete with the best of the best.

Just do a search on how to manually white balance on a Sony camera. You will need a grey card - and they cost about $10 on Amazon

Very informative video. The iPhone 13 pro and all the other iPhone 13 series phones give very good dynamic range in high dynamic range situations. Can the iPhone produce a better dynamic range than the slog3 of Sony cameras? Or it can't even compete with HLG3 in terms of dynamic range in high dynamic range situations?

The iPhone can’t really compete with the larger sensor cameras. Even if the dynamic range is measured technically higher than some cameras, the small sensor will struggle compared to larger sensor cameras that capture more light. The iPhone makes up for a lot with computational photography and can be great in certain situations, but there’s a reason professional photographers and videographers always use a good camera. The bigger sensor just gives a better image to work with.

I think the a6400 is the way to go. All those cameras a great, but the Sony has the most lenses and overall features for me.

you can transfer the files for sure, just get an sd card reader for your iPad. put the sd card in that and put the files on your iPad and edit in whatever app you want.

I have many doubts and it seems that neither of them will answer me. I work mostly shooting night parties, where it's low light (but I'm aware that I'm going to use lighting like a LED stick for example) and I'll have to do fast movements, because my edits I like to catch fast camera movements like jumping and dancing. The second point is that I use slow motion a lot because some dance moves look really good with slow motion and the 1080p of these two cameras looks bad without counting the jelly effect. So which camera should I start researching?
Great video and all good choices for beginners! Being a 60 year old man I vote for the Canon M50 in it's awesome true (not line skipped from 4K) 1080p. Amazing Canon color science and my skin tones look natural and spot-on, what I see in the mirror with daylight coming through the window, daylight, not weird and pinkish like when using my wife's 4K camera. On my worst day I can't look bad with that M50! 4K video on my face exaggerates every tiny skin pore or blemish- with the Canon M50, at 60 years old, I can still be a handsome devil ha ha! All hail Canon 1080p!

ZV E10 for me. I love mine, but I do feel like I can never get as good of a picture as you, even when following your tutorials.
You’ll get the hang of it. It’s probably lighting - good lighting is the key to good footage. Get a nice softbox to soften the light and shoot outside at golden hour and it’ll make a huge difference.
Thanks! This was really, really useful. My conclusion is actully that I didn't want any of them. The Sony looked SOOOOOO much better on paper, but in reality I prefer the Canon image and fuller sound spectrum. Back to the drawing board for me! :)
just remember with colour grading they can all look very different. I would suggest you look at the Canon R10

wow ZVE10 out the box defiantly looks better than Canon or Phone...crazy.
Only thing is I wish my ZVE10 could do HDR like iphone does...get clouds detail and foreground etc in high brights and low darks.
You can do a version of that. Bracketing on the ZV-E10 will merge several photos over different exposures to get an HDR image. You will have to merge them yourself using a program like Lightroom however
