Captain Toad: Treasure tracker is my next stop when it comes to ghosts in the world of Super Mario. We've covered the Sky Trees, the World 4-4 Ghost, soon to be Elh, and now this. I've been wanting to cover this strange situation for a while now, so we're heading off to 1-16 Bizarre Doors of Boo Mansion, 2-4 Sinister Street Signs, and 3-17 Fright Train Flight to set the stage for this peculiar Nintendo mystery surrounding Captain Toad's deleted ghosts.

I have only played the Switch version, and I can confirm that the handprints did appear. But only once and very briefly.
If it's not present anymore, it would have to have been patched out.
Awe man was excited from the first half
I play it, they are in the Switch Version
I only played demos: WII U, switch and 3DS.
so all of them
3ds must have been removed due to space
I think the Wii U version has different bonus stages than the switch one?
Now this is actually spooky. Imagine if you called up Nintendo to ask them about why the two spirits were removed, and they responded with "We didn't put them in there."
"What ghosts?" And then you check the Wii U/Switch version and they're GONE.
Captain toad has become too powerful, he is actually erasing souls from existence now.

Weirdly, I just tried it out and everything works on the Switch version...
Maybe they thought the 3ds version might be spooky for children or something? Weird
The 3DS version is heavily optimised. Remember Donkey Kong Country Returns 3D? It's a massively downgraded port from Nintendo Wii. This is a Wii U game.
Maybe they did remove to optimize for the 3ds hardware. The toads have way less polygons in the 3ds version too.
@@istaffa Its also harder to see on a 3DS screen, so maybe they felt it wasn't worth using more resources to render objects no one could see.
???
Theory: Nintendo knew about these and removed them from the 3DS version due to size limitations, as they thought that removing tiny easter eggs in order to save space was a fair trade off.
Game Theory: The ghosts were completely gone because it was the 3DS Version of Captain Toad, and they decided they didn't want to be involved with such a bizarre port
At least it wasn't the Mario Maker 3DS port

5:32 When the Flaptor turned around, I never expected the feet and talons to be so... low poly.
Well it *is* the 3DS version.
I have the switch version and the ghosts are still there. Thats how I was able to see them for myself. I think it might be because of the simpler programming that you aren't able to see them on the 3ds version
Because really small texture files are very complicated to program.....suuuuurrrreeee.....
Graphic limitations are sometimes a buzzkill for discoveries like this. Also the hands be the hands of a New Donker.
@@jordanekl5383 dude... the 3ds version has simpler programming due to how large the game is compared to the level of data the 3ds can process correctly. Im basically saying the game had to cut or remove items so that the game could work properly. Im not saying graphics aren't simple im saying the game itself is simple compared to the switch/wii u versions. Shut the heck your mouth you ignorant swine.
@@adamnakamura8003 very true.

In 64 the background for wet dry world is unsettling for some reason
@@Goomba456 Probably because it's a real photo with a filter over it
@@Goomba456 The level in General is unsettling, and no one is sure exactly why. I think the background is part of it, but a good part of it is probably the abandoned town
The hand prints must be a single hand textured that is displayed as multiple via a code that shapes them in a certain way. Meaning that the hand is probably a single texture somewhere in the files, and probably not inside the actual level, because it's not actually in the level, the hand is being pulled from somewhere else and simply multiplied through code to create all those hand prints.
Now the cackling ghost is harder to solve, just because of the sheer size and the fact that it's well, cackling, but I think there is a solution to that too, the ghost spirits that come out of boos and the one that came out of trust the sign posts look a bit similar to the massive one, our massive boy might not even be a separate texture, but I'm fact a rescaled version of the trust the signs ghost that was animated by code and made faded with the help of well programming.
You could try to increase the size and resolution of the small boy to see if it matches at least a bit to what we see in game.
The hand prints are definitely somewhere in the files, the problem is they are somewhere people wouldn't look for them, maybe they even are in the actual level, just far out of bounds or inside stage geometry.
Remember these are ghosts hidden by the devs, and you have to wait 5 minutes for them to even appear in the Wii u version, finding what they are and where they are won't be easy, keep searching swanky, don't give up on your search for the hand prints and the cackling ghosts.
You keep mentioning code, but basically none of this would be accomplished by coding. Nintendo largely works in the same way as most game development studios. A level design team blocks out the level to give a basic idea of how it should look, concept artists are given information and the blocked out level for them to create a visual concept for that level, that concept is passed onto the art team who creates the required assets. From there, they would usually pass this back off to the level design team to populate the area with those assets, but some development studios have environmental artists on the art team that would do that.
Nintendo develops tools to make this easier on each team, which means that there's usually a level editor of some kind involved. This editor would give the designers control over an asset's scale, opacity, behaviour, and much more. If you've ever used Unity or Unreal Engine, think along those likes. Usually less polished, though, since they don't have to worry about anyone outside of the development team working with the tools.
The level designers/environmental artists would be the ones to place easter eggs like this with simple triggers. They may be setup in a way that tells the game "on awake, wait 300 seconds, fade in material 'spookyghost'." Where in this case, spookyghost would be a material or shader that has 'ghost.tga' assigned as its texture.
Most game engines are intelligent in that they won't package up what they don't need to. So, if the trigger for 'spookyghost' was deleted, then there would no longer be a reason to call 'ghost.tga' into memory. So, when the engine is building the version of the game that can be run, it would ignore ghost.tga entirely and not bother packaging it. That's most likely what happened here. The triggers for the train ghost and the handprints were removed, so the textures can't be found because they weren't packaged into the final game.
(In the case of unused assets that are completely missing from games but still found in the files, there's a lot of ways this could happen. One example is that the engine was told to always include assets in so and so folder when building.
As far as 'cover ups' go, honestly it may just be a case of them deleting these triggers for optimisation purposes. One less thing for the game to keep track of, and one less material to load into vram. Very important when porting over to 3ds. The one that remains might have just been overlooked.
@@vincentjonesvr I don't really understand what you mean, because the ghost themselfs aren't in the level (as far as well know) cuz they aren't in the level editor and stuff like that, otherwise swanky would have probably found it, unless they are out of bounds and they get triggered to teleport to their respective locations.
@@void7816 That's what I just said. The triggers for those ghosts were removed. For something simple like this, the trigger and the material would be on one object. The entire ghost object was deleted, so the engine didn't package the texture that would be applied to the material because it wasn't needed. That's why there's he can't find the textures either. They're not in the shipped version.
@@vincentjonesvr they are still on the Wii u version tho
I always found Captain Toad for the 3ds interesting kindof being a demake of the game for a older console. Especially with having some odyssey content in it.
Kind of like getting Mario Sunshine on N64 with added Mario galaxy content as a bonus. 0.o
Low poly Captain Toad and enemies are really cute
YES THIS WAS MY SUGGESTION!!! Also there is one you missed, in the ghost level with the rising lava wait before activating the start to go up and some HORRIFIC sounds will play

Nintendo didn't remove those ghosts...Luigi did! 😁
6:20 yeah, that's something Nintendo would do...
Yet, ghosts are not present only in 3DS version, as far as I understood from other comments. That's probably because this version was heavily optimised
Ok but low polygon red scared captain toad is so cute
The amount of adjectives in that comment is scaring me
My best guess would be so they could get rid of as much data as they could to fit captain toad on the 3ds, maybe that's why 🤔
Well i looked at the file size for the 3DS version and it doesn't even use all of the space on a 3DS cartridge. Not even close.
That doesn't really make sense. Adding 2 sprites would take up pretty much no extra data.
this isnt the 90s anymore....data storage is not an issue unless the gaming company is over obsessed with graffics.

Here's something interesting I found, you know the ghost level with the rising poison? If you wait around for a couple seconds then some creepy noises play, sort of like in Splatoon
The ghost hand prints on chapter 1 episode 16 are back on the Switch version, they appear right after it hits the 300 second mark. The ghost on episode 4 is still there and im not sure of the last ghost because I havent gotten to that part yet.
I remember when I was younger hearing and seeing a 4th ghost in captain toad. From what I recall it’s basically identical to the handprint one, except it’s bird tracks and each footprint spawns individually.
Which level is this in?
I love a good scary story right before Christmas!

Imagine if, all this time, it was just the "ghost" of Shigeru Miyamoto constantly being an Easter Egg. Kinda like the one Easter Egg in MGS2 with Kojima.
Yes, because Miyamoto is *dead.*
Wait, hes DEAD?
One of my all time favorite games. Always fun to play. Really hope for a sequel and I really hope they’ll keep the cube like level design. To me it’s amazing how much is in each level. All the little details.
This is still strange. I remembered seeing those easter eggs on my 3DS and then testing it on the switch and it worked
Also I thought I remembered watching this last year but actually it was only 2 years ago
They were only removed on the 3DS version, huh?
Might just be the ghosts were cut for space on the cartridge or something.
I was first playing through the game around the same week that this video came out, and I definitely saw the hand prints. I was playing the Wii U version though.
I've got the switch version and I could see the hands, I didn't check for the jail cell ghost and I couldn't find the giant one
As a switchplayer, can confirm handprints appear in the game, I’ve seen them😊
Very neat analysis! I do wonder how these ghosts work! Thanks for uploading!
I like how Swanky Boxes Profile when from Swanky Box to Swanky Ploygon
Train ghost probably doesn’t appear because on the 3ds, you probably wouldn’t be able to see it. Mansion ghost, probably wouldn’t be able to notice that they’re hand prints. Sign ghost, you probably can see because it’s the most noticeable, it’s a big white blob that you can’t miss if you see it.
I have all 3 version and I can confirm that they are present in the Switch port.
I'm actually surprised to hear that. Interesting...
@@SwankyBox yeah, I went to the 3ds version afterwards and it just wasn't there. It seemed like the resolution was high enough to be able to make it out, if just barely. The train one was weird because it was barely visible in the switch version and you have to wait a few minutes, so I don't know how people found it at all.

What is Mario is cursed with immortality and every ghost is just a ghost of one of his former lives. Giant ghosts are him when he ate a spuer-growth mushroom, tiny mushrooms = tiny ghosts, etc.
Nintendo just made the ghosts more realistc
Those gamecube toads are the true terror
The answer is simple. The ghosts pixelated out of existence.
Neat video! Thanks for uploading!
I don’t think people talk enough about the ambience noises at the beginning of the ghost gallery gambit level. It creeps me out so much, and I’m pretty sure that the noises also appear quietly in the background of a few of the ghost house levels in captain toad and even super mario 3D world. I only remember discovering this as a little kid and I can’t test it out anymore as I no longer have my Wii U, and I haven’t found any evidence online for it. A true ghost story

I’m seeing stuff about them being in the switch version, but I’m too lazy to go find my copy of the game and put it in my switch, so they’re probably right. They probably just aren’t in the 3DS version because removal for space and data reasons.
I forgot this game was released on the 3DS. I was wondering why the models looked so low poly.

I never noticed about how a lot of the enemies are polygonical mess

Unless you were on the 3DS edition.
bro to get these ghosts swanky pulled a scooby doo on them
The graphics in the b-roll make this game look like it released in the 90's
I guess we have a find old 3ds rom of this
I was able to find the handprints and the cackling giant on the Switch version, but was never able to find the ascending ghoul.
Maybe the 3DS wasn't powerfull enough to load the ghosts. The developers had to cut corners somewhere.

Captain Toad 3DS has models that are scarily low poly
Since I don't have a Wii U I got the game on both the 3DS and the switch. I only tested it on switch and they all worked, but that was a year ago
Wierd how they cut it from the 3ds version but not the switch
eyy an entire video on elh
In 3D world, when you kill a boo or peepa with a light the small mini ghost that comes from them is the
exact same stretched ghost in this game.(°Ο°)
I have the wii u and switch version and I definitely remember the hand prints from one of them.
Edit: The hand and train ghost both appear in the Switch version.
Probably removed from the 3DS version to save on file size and resources. Or was probably outsourced to a different team and they removed those aspects for various reasons, such as the hands not being recognisable on the 3DS version, eating up ram that could be used elsewhere, etc.
@@ThatOneDudeWhoPostsStuff the would take up barely any file size. The game is about 1/2 a gb and a couple of kb would not impact the game much. I think they probably took them out because of the low resolution but I went back to those levels on the 3ds version and I think that they would have actually been recognizable. Also 1 extra sprite on screen would not impact preformance.
Good video :)
Wow very spooky and interesting.👻
Judging from everyone in the comments saying they've seen them in the Switch version, it probably is just a 3DS problem
So wierd to see the WiiU models in low quality.
