Scary gaming mysteries will always be the best. And even in the tame world of Super Mario 3D Land, there's something quite spooky lurking around us. This figure is known as the World 4-4 Ghost - and although it seems it might be a one-off occurrence, the truth is this creepy fellow is following us throughout the entire game... So let's start at the first ghost house in Super Mario 3D Land and take a closer look at this specter from beyond the fence. Move over Hell Valley Sky trees! There's a new ghoul in town!

I've been waiting for this comment since the video came out. It definitely gave me a laugh. In order to get enough footage, I had to keep jumping off the cliff at the end of the level since the ghost only appears one time. This respawns you in the middle of the level, and well, the game was feeling bad about my countless deaths... Sooooo... Luigi and Mario were basically stuck in groundhog day scenarios where they were thrown to their death each and every time. Which makes this concept even more grim!

I was 6 when I saw it
I was around 10-12 when I played through this game and experienced that apparition. Really scared the hell out of me, lol! Though the mysterious ghost girl from Pokémon X and Y scared me more than the Mario ghost. Seriously, I couldn’t sleep without having nightmares and strange dreams for a few days.

The idea of Mario dying in a level and not returning like he normally does kinda freaks me out tbh. Like, what would Luigi and Peach do? Plus the body isn't just going to disappear- I mean, it will eventually, but it's going to be a terrible reminder of the time Mario missed his jump...

Funnily enough, there are other ghostly figures like that in Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker. In 2-4. Sinister Street Signs, every so often a long spindly ghost will fly out of prison bars.
And in 3-17, Fright Train Flight, waiting at the end of the train until the timer hits 300 reveals a massive ghost figure laughing under the tracks forever.
That's not all. In Ghost Gallery Gauntlet the level starts with the star just in front if you. Once you go to grab it disappears and you have to climb through the stage to find it. At the start of the level there is no music. If you wait for a while you hear weird noises.
And in the first ghost house level of the game, Dodgy Doors at Boo Mansion, there is a part of the level where if you wait in that area for a few minutes glowing blue handprints appear on the wall.
The first time i saw this i instantly thught to gaster.
Also for Captain toad, in Bizarre Doors of Boos mansion, if you lift the blocks in the back wall and stare at the back wall of the mansion for about 5 minutes, ghostly handprints will appear

Hey Swankybox, is it possible you would be able to cover the tiny hidden choo choo train in Toy Time Galaxy for Super Mario Galaxy? It’s nothing spooky, it’s just a random addition that really bothered me as a kid, as it did nothing. It is on the planet with the moving conveyor belts and the spring mushroom.

It's probably how they made the train in the skybox. Just took that model, scaled it up a bunch, the placed it in the skybox. It's like how Portal does it's skyboxes (Check out Sheesez's Boundary Break video on that game)

the ghost's sprites looked so smooth in game i was suprised when i got to the part where swanky found the assets and they were small/pixelated
I remember even seeing it. Even a sound effect played as I saw it (something like a wind blow sound effect). It made me freak out and make me complete the level immediately.

It's a Chinese-Japanese thing. "Four" is pronounced similarly to "death" in Chinese. Since the Japanese adopted much of the Chinese characters into their language, many of these connotations also appear in Japanese culture.

The ghost kinda looks like Aoba and Gaster, which I'm sure has nothing to do with it, but I thought it was an interesting idea, also because all of them have the same general "appear out of nowhere, freak the fuck out, and then leave" idea (minus Aoba who pretty much just sends you to hell from what I remember).

You can also see a UFO on one of the bouncing outside levels, and if you use a telescope to zoom in on it, it'll fly away at a super fast speed.

No worries, the 3D Land UFO is actually just Rosalina‘s spaceship from Super Mario Galaxy, foreshadowing her return as a playable character in 3D World.
The famous ghost of 4-4 isn’t just in 4-4. It’s in EVERY GHOST HOUSE. Yes, even the ones in the special world with clone Mario and the time limit. Each and every ghost house has this thing.

This reminds me of the UFO you could also find in this game. I remember both of these occurrences left me wondering about the Mario World.
Man I Haven’t heard anyone talk about this thing in years, it was so far back I also only knew of it being in 4-4. But the fact that it’s spirit has been pulled out is just crazy to me. Now this has invigorated me to want to know if another creepy entity shows up within 3D world.

With all his effort, in his last moments, he did his best to scream, but no sound was heard. All he could do was leave his mouth agape...before his consciousness faded. A blink. Nothingness.

It's vaguely based on a short fan comic I saw years ago in which Mario lost a life and woke up in darkness only to see himself and freak out and withdraw into himself, becoming a Boo.

I remember trying somehow to connect this with the world 1 UFO in this same game, but no matter wherever I looked or whatever I thought up, I had no leads or ideas what this could mean. It was so unsettling, and I hated it! It also appeared in 8-4, and that’s the only place I remember it being, and I remember sometimes I would accidentally zoom in on it in the end-level cutscene. Thank you so much for covering this subject! I’ve wanted some more info on this for so long!

I have a recommendation for you, in Super Mario Galaxy 2 on Cosmic Cove Galaxy, there is a mission called Exploring The Cosmic Cavern. When you first arrive on the level, turn around and go into first-person mode to see the backround behind you. Once you have done this you might see a few black holes in the distance. Keep in mind that they are VERY hard to see since they are so far away. Can you please make a video of you exploring this? If you're going to make a video on this oralready planning to, Thank You

Just graphically speaking this ghost looks far more creepy than anything ever in the mario games imo.
I never found this while playing, but 3D Land was one of my favourite games growing up. I was a very easily spooked kid and when I found out about the ghost it really freaked me out. Probably because I've always found the idea of being watched and not finding out until later to be very creepy.

In Super Mario Odyssey’s Metro Kingdom, when you get to the Main Street entrance and look right, you’ll see a man at a corner sidewalk, cheering at something. He’s staring into the city’s abyss, and he wears a dark outfit and is tall. But when you approach him... He turns to pixels... and fades away!
What if those are the souls of the owners that lived in the ghost houses? They just linger in they’re old home, trying to find comfort in it, despite the boos having turned it into a mad house
One of my favorite UA-camrs, Mullet Mike, believes this is a reference to a Japanes forest spirit called a Kodama.
