    I recently purchased such a tool. I had to do a lot of modifications. Unfortunately the shafts are hardened but not tempered, very fragile. Chunks of the axis broke off at the gears because of the loose fit and backlash. Now I will have to go to a turner to fix it. I advise you to burn out the studs for the gears, so they do not break off when loaded, they must fit tightly

    A few questions.
    1. I need to have the handle on the left. Can I easily push the sheet/wire through from the back (which will be at the front in my set up)?
    2. How hard is it to turn when texturing etc? Does it require a lot of force. I am not very strong.
    3. Can you make round wire if you buy an extra wire roller and if yes what is the maximum diameter you can make it?
    Thanks!

      Sian say:
      1. Yes I don't see why not.
      2. This depends on the thickness, size and type of metal you are texturing. 0.4mm 10mm x 10mm Fine silver for example would be super easy. 4mm 60mm x 60mm Brass would be very difficult. The more securely you bolt the rolling mill down to a sturdy surface the better.
      3. You would need to draw wire to make it round www.cooksongold.com/Jewellery-Tools/Drawplate,-Round,-0.5mm---3.0mm,-31-Hole-prcode-999-286
      Whilst this rolling mill is excellent value it is aimed at a hobbyist. If you aren't very strong then something like:

      www.cooksongold.com/Jewellery-Tools/Durston-Olivia-F130-Flat-Rolling---Mill-130mm-With-Extension-Rollers-prcode-999-D508&query=rolling%20mill&channel=uk
      These have a gearbox and whilst a really considered purchase would last a very long time and have a good second hand resale value.

    What's the thickness that the roller will do? If I have a bar of metal (gold, for example), can it thin it down into a sheet?

    • @cooksongold
      @cooksongold  Рік тому +1

      The thickness of metal the roller will roll really depends on the size and material of the metal, for example fine silver is a softer material than sterling silver. The roller needs to be firmly secured down and the metal should be annealed between each roll. If you want to roll down a bar of gold then a Durston rolling mill could be a better option. These blue rolling mills are often for beginners and are very budget friendly.
