WTF, groove metal. Rex Brown said even him self when Metallica stopped playing trash metal did Pantera see opportunity to fill that position as trash metal stars. Rex answer was absolute YES. When metallica stopped playing trash metal, Pantera kicked the closing door in and came in with a bang. So TRASH METAL

@@halofitz8910 easy there Pete. You miss understand my point. Pantera had a groove with their insane rhythm section that almost all metal bands (before or since) could not match. All 4 of the boys have name checked it in interviews as well while we are on the subject. Of course they had plenty of Thrash metal elements (along with Power Metal if you recall). I would certainly maintain they were a hell of a lot more than a Thrash Metal band. They were proudly Heavy Metal. Period. And god I miss the 4 of them. Those shows were crushing live & picking up GSTK on release day & blasting it in the parking lot for the first time was one of the best moments from the scene in the 90s.

I'm told by my cousin, who was Pantera's photographer and a childhood friend of the lead singer's, that this song was written about his dog which got ran over by a float at Mardis Gras. The visuals for the video make you think it's over a person.

It's easy to see why this was their biggest hit, it has such crossover appeal that almost anybody could enjoy it. I would say to adjust your expectations if you decide to listen to more Pantera, they don't have many other songs like this with the soft and high-pitched singing, they are pretty much full-on heavy after this. I would recommend "Walk" or "This Love" to check out next.

My intro to Pantera was in the late 1990s. I was a late bloomer as a music fan. I was in my teens owning all Van Halen albums, then got into Metallica. For a time that was the heaviest it got. Then my cousin showed me this song and I liked it, and eventually was able to handle heavier and heavier stuff. Yes, there are heavier bands and more famous bands with more accolades. But even Metallica comes to mind second or third when I think of metal music behind Pantera and maybe Slipknot, depending on the criteria involved.

I had the honor of seeing them in concert a few times. Wasn't sure how they would pull off Dime's leads when there should be a rhythm guitar behind it. Sometimes it would just be Dime playing over Rex and Vinnie and sometimes it would have a backing rhythm. I didn't believe that Pantera would have a pre-recorded track. Found out later that his lifelong friend and guitar tech Grady Champion would play rhythm backstage. White Zombie, Pantera and Megadeth was one of the greatest shows I ever saw.

I got into Pantera in the late 90's when I started playing bass, and I learned their entire catalogue from the ages of 15 to 20ish. My friend called me at 4:00 AM on a Wednesday, minutes after I had come home from work (I was around 20) to tell me Dimebag had been killed. I had missed their tour with Slayer and Morbid Angel stopping in my area because I was broke, and my friends had to their sell their tickets on the side of the road because their car broke down miles from the show. I'll forever regret missing that concert, but man it's awesome seeing people just now get into them. Also, you should check out the band "Down" featuring the same singer Phil Anselmo (he's kinda potentially not a great person, but he has a great voice).

ok i love you! best reaction to this song that i"ve seen. I love this song. Metal was very cookie cutter at that time, when we first heard this song, we new Pantera was a New Level.

If you like this kind of vocals, probably you would love Faith No More. I personally recomend "Zombie Eaters".
