      He was a super chill dude too, IRL. I had the honor to jam/hang with him back in the day... I knew Rex back in the 90s and lived/played myself very near arlington a lot. DD and Vinnie were both the best guys and really humble too. DD was one of the first to really exploit octive pedals for some amazing riffs btw. They were taken way too soon and for what... I miss them along with millions of others. 😞

    You know it’s a powerful song when you need a moment after the final note has faded. Many years ago I read in a metal magazine, a survey among Pantera fans as far as their favorite song by the band. And “Cemetery Gates” came out on top at #1. Given the overall composition, plus that unreal, parallel vocal-to-guitar outro, it surely belongs in the heavy metal hall of fame.

    • @k333rl
      @k333rl Місяць тому +1

      it must not have been a recent poll. this song has become almost the bane of their existence. its the one that fans want to use to introduce their friends into the band and then wonder why the friends don't like the rest of the album. this and suicide note pt 1 are completely different from everything else they do.

  • @johnseward2934

    This song was a turning point in the bands sound and style. Prior to the Cowboys from Hell album, Pantera was a power glam band with all that it entails. That's the root of Phil's amazing cleans and range. With Cemetery Gates and CfH album in general, the band reinvented themselves into the start of a metal juggernaut that would revive and resurrect the American metal scene in a way nobody could have expected. And so it makes perfect sense that in Cemetery Gates is a perfect blend of their older glam style and the birth of their particular style of metal.
    And of course, Dimebag was on a dimension of his own with the guitar. RIP

    Those high pitched notes are pinch harmonics or "squeals". The reason they are so smooth is because in this case they don't require the guitarist to move their hands very far. Also, Dimebag is a god and his playing was taken from us far too soon. R.I.P. Dime and Vinnie🤘

    Judas Priest took Pantera on tour with them in Europe in '91, and that is what really gave them their first big audiences and exposure. The Norden countries especially embraced them. Most of their early succes came by word of mouth, and not a big push from media or record label. They had a number one album on the billboard charts in 1994, without a real radio/video hit, and almost no radio or video play. They got radio hits, from previous albums, and their latest after their success. It usually works the other way around. They beat out country music artist Bonnie Raitt, and pop group Ace of Base for the number one album. They were both very popular and were absolutely pushed through the tv and radio. It was a shock to the music industry, and it really gave a boost to the metal genre at the time.

    I saw Pantera once long ago in Seattle. They had equipment problems but It was still an amazing show, and I'm very grateful I got to see Vinnie Paul (drummer) and Dimebag Darrell (guitar) before it was too late. As brothers they played together their whole lives and it showed. Phil caused some problems later but nobody sounded like him for those first couple albums, they were all legends.

    What he did on The Great Southern Trendkill was absolutely masterful!!!
    He had some help from a friend with some backing vocals on a couple of songs, not much... (and not really necessary!)
    But the man could sing baratone like Elvis and scream like a demon...
    And on this album he was going through a very, VERY dark time in his life...
    Greatest Metal vocal performance ever!!!

For me and for most people that play guitar, Dime (The guitarist) is the best of all time, and for some he isnt, but he 100% changed the way you play. He was so unique, technique, sound, vibrato, legato EVERYTHING man. He came to rock and rocked like no other. You should do more Pantera like Hollow , Floods, This love... There you can really feal the lyrics and GUITAR aswell. Great reaction btw keep on reacting 👏
