I have lots of off cuts of pine and never really bothered to turn them. Since watching you and seeing how lovely your pine work looks I’ve started to use them I love playing around with the different coloured inlays. Thank you so much for showing us just how beautiful pine wood is to turn. Awesome channel 👍👍👍
Nice looking bowl. It turned out nicely. Suggest taking better care in sharpening the tool. The blue tip on the gouge indicates overheating and not as sharp as it should be to turn wood. Dip the end of the tool in a cup of water frequently as you sharpen to keep the steel cool. This may be one of the causes of tear out you mentioned. I could tell by some of the sound while turning the wood that the tool was not cutting as well as it should. But, pine tends to tear out anyway even if you have a sharp tool.
Hi, I just aquired a lathe and want to learn to turn. I am so glad I found your channel, so I have subbed to you. I will slowly work my way through your videos and hopefully learn. I must say you are very creative and definitely know what you are doing. Thank you.
Very nice job. I just ordered some veneer strips. I don't do woodturning during the summer, it's too hot in my shop with no AC, the weather is starting to cool here in NC a bit so I'll be doing my turning soon.
Love the exquisite product of relatively cheap materials! When I eventually manage to get wood turning this is definitely an idea I would like to develop bowl turning with.
Lovely bowl only one thing i would've done differently. I would've put a coloured piece into the cut side before gluing up. Thats just me its a lovely bowl.
@@RDMWoodturning I watch lots of turning videos, and I always like to give credit on a lovely piece like your bowl. Especially when it's come from something that would otherwise get thrown away or burnt. I'll certainly be having a go at one like yours. Thanks.
Just shows how cheap can be cheerful! I like the veneer inserts, gives it the wow factor, well done to you. By the way a really nice tool rest you have there, looks about a 12", what make is it please. Regards, Tony T
Sanding Sealers bind the loose fibres of the timber together giving a more solid foundation for the next coat, which helps make sure the final finish is able to adhere properly and thus be more durable. I can honestly say that it improves the finish 100%. Hope this helps. Thanks for watching.
They are pieces of Tulipwood Veneer. I buy them in small sheets from here. www.thewoodveneerhub.co.uk/collections/coloured-wood-veneer Thanks for watching 👍
Yes parchment paper is very useful when gluing… although I usually forget to use it! The CA glue is very useful with soft pine. Thanks very much for watching 😊👍
Must admit, I never would have believed that glued end grain would hold together so well. Every day is a school day! I'm still amazed at how good a finish you achieve on pine, I usually struggle to get anything acceptable. What grits do you sand with? Cracking job sir, thanks for sharing.
You can go quite rough with pine, I usually spend a long time on 60 grit, then 80, 120 and 180 then either 240 or 320. Then sealer to jump to 1000 or 1200 to de-nib. Thank you very much for watching.
This turned out really nice! I just found your channel so of course I had to subscribe immediately. I really love this piece. It's absolutely lovely. I wouldn't have thought with it just being scraps of pine. But you do wonderful work. So now I will have to do a little bit of binge watching your other stuff. Take care & God Bless!!!
De-nibbing is gently sanding between coats of finish with a high grit abrasive paper to smooth over any imperfections in the finish. After the sealer, the finish is around 800-1000 grit, so a slightly higher paper is used, just to refine one last time. Thank you so much for watching 😎👍
Very nice! When I first tried using glued pine, I thought it is maybe a bad idea using an outward tenon cause then the chuck is forcing the glue apart?
What would you think about using thin CA instead of thick to stabilize the mortise? Seems like the thin would penetrate deeper. Also, in future videos could you pls adjust the volume down quite a bit while turning, or adjust the volume up when you’re speaking?
Thanks. I tend to find that thin runs too fast and I end up with a big mess, however that could just be me being clumsy! Yes, I’m definitely going to work on the volume levels. Thank you very much for watching 😎❤️👍
Hallo, Just come across your channel and found this interesting as I also use pine for things as so easy to get hold of. Your bowle turned out really well! As a matter of interest, what is the actual diameter, and also, what is the thickness of the veneer you used? Many thanks.
Thanks. Yes they were sanded, I just get so engrossed in the making, that I often forget to film each step. I’m just happy that it held together and didn’t split. Thanks for watching 😎👍
Looks like there was some wobble from the mortise being a bit small for the bowl. Try a larger mortise next time and keep it to no less than 1/3 bowl diameter. This works for me. Great job.

Hi RDM, just stumbled across your channel, great project, did you buy the red and yellow tulipwood in such thin sections or did you machine it down on a bandsaw? If veneer? who do you buy from? who new pine could look so nice, especially CLS grade. Thanks for sharing
I originally thought you had made a big mistake mounting blank so that all the exterior cutting was against the grain causing tear-out etc. Of course Iwas wrong as when turned around to turn inside that was with the grain, more important for the most visible surface. Well done.

Thank you. Sometimes I have half finished bowls around my lathe, because I get new ideas and get carried away.
What do you call that steel ring at 2:30? I cannot find one locally and need to know what to look for on line. TY
It's a faceplate ring. Models vary depending on brand of chuck and jaws. They are very useful. Try Amazon or eBay. Good luck.
Great looking piece! Thanks for sharing!

If you ever run out of sanding sealer. Use model aircraft dope and talcum power ! Works just as well !

Question: what is the purpose/function of sanding sealer?
Sanding Sealers bind the loose fibres of the timber together giving a more solid foundation for the next coat, which helps make sure the final finish is able to adhere properly and thus be more durable. I can honestly say that it improves the finish 100%. Hope this helps. Thanks for watching.

De-nib?? Is that wood turner jargon? Love your videos!! Keep them coming....
De-nibbing is gently sanding between coats of finish with a high grit abrasive paper to smooth over any imperfections in the finish. After the sealer, the finish is around 800-1000 grit, so a slightly higher paper is used, just to refine one last time. Thank you so much for watching 😎👍

When I first tried using glued pine, I thought it is maybe a bad idea using an outward tenon cause then the chuck is forcing the glue apart?
Yeah pine is very difficult to use. I strengthen the mortice using CA glue, which tends to help avoid splitting at the chuck. Good luck
