    Nice looking bowl. It turned out nicely.
    Suggest taking better care in sharpening the tool. The blue tip on the gouge indicates overheating and not as sharp as it should be to turn wood. Dip the end of the tool in a cup of water frequently as you sharpen to keep the steel cool. This may be one of the causes of tear out you mentioned. I could tell by some of the sound while turning the wood that the tool was not cutting as well as it should. But, pine tends to tear out anyway even if you have a sharp tool.

    Question: what is the purpose/function of sanding sealer?

    • @RDMWoodturning
      @RDMWoodturning  3 роки тому +5

      Sanding Sealers bind the loose fibres of the timber together giving a more solid foundation for the next coat, which helps make sure the final finish is able to adhere properly and thus be more durable. I can honestly say that it improves the finish 100%. Hope this helps. Thanks for watching.

      You can go quite rough with pine, I usually spend a long time on 60 grit, then 80, 120 and 180 then either 240 or 320. Then sealer to jump to 1000 or 1200 to de-nib. Thank you very much for watching.

    De-nib?? Is that wood turner jargon? Love your videos!! Keep them coming....

    • @RDMWoodturning
      @RDMWoodturning  3 роки тому

      De-nibbing is gently sanding between coats of finish with a high grit abrasive paper to smooth over any imperfections in the finish. After the sealer, the finish is around 800-1000 grit, so a slightly higher paper is used, just to refine one last time. Thank you so much for watching 😎👍

    When I first tried using glued pine, I thought it is maybe a bad idea using an outward tenon cause then the chuck is forcing the glue apart?

    • @RDMWoodturning
      @RDMWoodturning  3 роки тому +1

      Yeah pine is very difficult to use. I strengthen the mortice using CA glue, which tends to help avoid splitting at the chuck. Good luck

    What would you think about using thin CA instead of thick to stabilize the mortise? Seems like the thin would penetrate deeper. Also, in future videos could you pls adjust the volume down quite a bit while turning, or adjust the volume up when you’re speaking?

    • @RDMWoodturning

    Great video I thoroughly enjoyed watching as a fellow 'beginner'. Where can one acquire the Tulip Wood slivers from, please and what is the difference (for you) between power sanding with a drill/driver and the tool you used? I bought the tulipwood from eBay a few months ago, they were in 20cm x 40cm sheets.
      Sanding with a drill is good for stubborn areas, but for an improved/ more even finish the hand sanding tool wins every time. Honestly, every bowl that I have made since buying it has enjoyed a much crisper finish. Yes I'm in the north west. Good luck with your projects! 😎👍

    I originally thought you had made a big mistake mounting blank so that all the exterior cutting was against the grain causing tear-out etc. Of course Iwas wrong as when turned around to turn inside that was with the grain, more important for the most visible surface. Well done.

      You’re right. I decided on trying to keep the inside the main feature. Pine is so unforgiving with tear out. Thanks for watching 👍😎

    Any concerns regarding gluing end grain to plain sawn lumber. I was under the impression that it would not hold.

      I was a bit unsure, but just used loads of glue and clamped it very firmly. Thanks for watching

    Awesome looking bowl for sure. I was wondering what that sanding tool was called and where you bought it from. Does that tool not require an air supply to use? Thanks for the video.

      The bowl sander is from Amazon amzn.to/3s4eJvg I think that this link is in the description. It's a brilliant tool and gives a very even finish. Thank for watching 🙂👍

    Why do bowl makers always spread glue with their fingers?

    • @RDMWoodturning
      @RDMWoodturning  3 роки тому

      Personally it's just to make sure every piece of the wood is covered, especially when they are spinning around at 1000+ rpm 👍

    you should at least sand the glue surfaces flat your glue joint would be much better.

      Thanks. I generally do, but I just don't show the process in the videos. I almost spend more time sanding than with a chisel in my hand 😂👍😀
