Wood turning - Pine Herringbone Bowl

  • I had a piece of 2 x 1 inch pine left over from an other job. I am not too sure why, but I decided to try and turn it into a bowl! The effect is quite interesting, but the quality of the glue up could be better, then again it's all part of the learning process!
    I hope that you enjoy my pine herringbone bowl!

    All the issues with end grain come from new growth, and the speed the trees are grown. If you ever find reclaimed old growth the gain is so much tighter. Worth the extra money and effort to repurpose it. Beautiful craftsmanship with what you had to work with.

    Starting out, I cut end grain as you did in the traditional way of cutting into a bowl. This is for ease and speed. To improve the surface quality of cut, I do reverse cuts stating from the bottom of the bowl and up the side of the bowl. This ensure that the fiber being cut is supported by an adjacent fiber, preventing tear out of the fiber. The bottom of the bowl is cut with a scrapper and refine by shear scrapping. Using soft wood I start sanding with 120 or 150.

    Great idea. I keep a container near the lathe and put all my sanding dust in it. When I need to fill cracks I use CA glue and cram as much dust in the cracks as I can get in there, spray activator on it and then sand it down.

    Fair play to you. Nice result for an experiment 👍. I would say that some of your gap issues might be down to not squaring the outside of your timber before cutting to lengths. Timber as bought is NEVER square! I hope that helps.

    Great looking bowl RDM. Interesting to see how provocative the video is in the comments about how people would do things differently, or perhaps inspirational to get them to try it themselves. I will also glue together each piece or small block then allow to set then continue. Just think with respect I will get a better constructed piece for a Bowl turn of 10" in diameter. But great idea.

    I like the bowl and the concept of the material used. I do agree about the glue up process but I think it turned out as a keeper and better than expected. Im a new turner also and I think using what some may see a scrap material is the way to go. Other than the skew what was the main tool you were using? It looked like a fingernail grind bowl gouge but I'm not sure. The reason I ask is because of the amount of end grain you had to deal with. Keep up the good work and thanks for the video.

    • @RDMWoodturning
      @RDMWoodturning  2 роки тому +1

      After applying sanding sealer, there are often a few minor grains of wood still raised. These imperfections can effect the finish, so between sealer and wax, a fine abrasive pass is made to smooth things over. That is de-nibbing. 👍 Thank you so much for watching 😀
