- Since I started producing Grimdark content I have been asked one question more than any others.....
"Do I need to varnish before applying streaking grime?"
Well today it's time to answer this question and to do so lets do some experiments!

How do you feel about using Varnish before enamels?
Is it something you do everytime without fail or an unecessary step?
Never varnished. Learnt the hard way about using the right amount of pressure and not being too hard with the cotton bud. Plain sailing since then!
Phenomenal video! this was really fascinating and insanely useful! Thank you for taking the time to put this together
Great video, exactly what I was looking for.
This is just about the best damn video I’ve seen on the topic. Answers all the questions I had and loads of stuff I didn’t know (like curing times). Brilliant stuff thank you
You are welcome bud! That was my intention with this video, these are questions that almost everyone seems to have as generally we aren't used to using enamels etc!
Excellent breakdown. Best one on UA-cam.
This was really helpful to watch thank you
Thank you. I have been searching for something like this for a few days.
Glad you're back! On to watching the new video :)
Back with a vengeance!
Great vid as always bud! 🙌
Thanks bud!
Definitely helpful, ty.
Nice vid, very clear and concise
Thankyou! That's what I was aiming for!
Just what i was looking for .... thankyou
You are welcome bud!
Love the video, I’ve just started experimenting with streaking grime and wanted to know about the gloss varnish. Thanks!
I'm really glad it helped!
Great video!
Has anyone ever said that you look a bit like Ricky Gervais? I couldn't get it out of my mind haha, thoroughly enjoyed!
Great video - thank you
You are welcome! Thanks for watching! 👍
This was really helpful to watch thank you. Would you consider doing something similar to compare the different types of streaking grime?
Some tall dark green guys where asking about your location
Thank you fir this! 😅
Thank you for making this video
You are welcome, thankyou for watching! 👍
I have found that if you are using contrast paint you probably should. I have found that the removal process take some normal paint off as well. I have had to go back into the models to highlight and or fix some of the edges.
Video does exactly what you want it to. Cheers.
Umbrella Academy test subjects hehehe. Good video, really clear and just what I needed as an intro to these products. Thanks.
Thankyou! Glad you enjoyed it!
Wuhuu a new video! Good work bud.
I've not disappeared entirely!
Yo @quintus 🙌
@@Spartan1981uk Hej Matt!
"three tabletop quality space marines"
*shows miniatures painted better than 99% of all models on any table top*
Me: Right then, i'll just set all of my miniatures in the bin.
Excellent video buddy, good to see the results
Thanks Nick! 👍
Thank you , Mr Ritch .
🐺
Thanks for watching as always buddy!
Great video! I gave my last model a coat of varnish from a rattle can and paint still lifted in some areas when using the spirits. Clearly I need a lighter touch 😅
Rattlecans don't always give a perfect coverage but if you let your acrylics cure properly and maybe work with a slightly lighter touch you should be ok! 👍
@@SprayBlackStudios cheers! I think it might be time to buy in to the airbrush game after all
Great video I have never varnished any of my models ever wonder if I should start
If you game with them at all then I'd highly recommend it!
This was such a help thank you. I’ve had an issue when trying to use oil paints over my slap chopped minis but I’m realizing I was giving them 1-2 hours to cure. Probably not enough time.
When using those Vallejo varnishes did the matte varnish go right through the air brush or does it need to be watered down?
i dont use varnish but i also dont let the paint dry as much as you do, i start taking it off when it still looks a little moist so white spirit isnt needed nearly at all
Thank you sir! Subscribed. Noticd you haven't uploaded for a while so hope youre doing ok mate 👍
Curious, I have done this before ona few models, but is there a certain point that this enamel cannot be removed? i.e. can you let it sit on your model too long?
Man I have had a year 2 year long Hiatus away from the hobby. I am a 25year experienced painter of all forms of miniatures. My prefered style for those years was GWs color lust early years. Straight up edge highlighting up to the finished box art.
I was never happy with this method, as the box art never reflected the lore in my honest view.
I rejoiced when Grim Dark became a proper thing. I was using dull tones and effect paints and dusts for the last 10 years and it just makes that GD feel now for me.
But this Streakygrime has just pulled all those processes together!
My favorite way of using it now is on my Forgeworld Primarch and hero models pieces. Not directly on those miniatures, but on the dead marines and ones they are busy slaughtering on their diorama bases. It works so well to have those astartes all covered in grime and battle damage only to be standing next to or fighting a god of the battlefield a primarch that has not a speck of dust on him. Really brings that pop to those character models.
Thank you sir for introducing me to this marvelous stuff 👌
Nice one rich. Also, more dog content please.
Can You then acrylic varnish the miniature when they have had streaking grime and/or white spirit used on them?
I have a question… where are you coming back to UA-cam! 😁 I love your channel!
Streaking grime has a kind of grain in it, right? Doesn't that clog your airbrush when applying it?
I've never even thought of applying it with an airbrush. I've used pencils mostly. What is the main advantage of applying it with an airbrush?
Thank you for sharing; If we apply a Gloss Varnish/Streaking Grime, and then wish to continue with Acrylic Painting, may we need to apply a Matt Varnish first? (i.e., will the Acrylic Paint adhere to the Gloss Varnish??). Your thoughts are welcomed.
Yes, you need to seal the enamels in. Enamel and acrylic paints aren't miscible.
Where did you go?
you've been watching too much Umbrella Academy!
Great video, some knowledge I'll need for my squats
It is a very good show though!
@@SprayBlackStudios it is!
can I use machine spirits for streaking grime? :)
No videos from a long time now..hope you 're ok friend, take care !
How long would you say it takes for acrylic paints to cure?
Lol, loves your comment but doesn't bother to reply.
Not allowing acrylics to cure properly is the biggest mistake people make when doing anything like this. Just because it looks dry, doesn't mean it is.
The water has to evaporate completely out of the medium before its fully cured. If theres still any water in there, the acrylic hasn't properly bonded to whatever the paint has been applied to, and it can easily be lifted off with a bit of abrasion.
A gloss varnish when using acrylic washes can help with the tea stain effect too, as the wash is more naturally pulled into the recesses instead of gathering on flat surfaces.
Very much agreed! I often find that as acrylics go to "touch dry" pretty quickly they assume that it has cured fully.
I love using that gloss varnish technique with acrylic washes, really helps to break the surface tension! 👍
@@SprayBlackStudios Yup. I learned that technique from when I used to build Gunpla. It makes panel lines, vents etc an absolute doddle. Why make life hard for yourself when capillary action will do all the work for you?
@@chikhai exactly! I'm all for making my life easier!
come back please
Perfect timing as my grime an rust has just arrived , question for anyone here , I’ve airbrushed a razorback would you use the streaking grime as a wash as opposed to a nuln ?
Streaking grime and Nuln oil are very different in terms of colour and finish but a good reductive wash works well on armour panels and won't give you the tide marking etc that acrylic washes will.
@@SprayBlackStudios thanks a lot for the advice . An for the content !
@@Greenielid instead of Nuln oil you can also use black wash from mig or at least that's what I use instead of Nuln oil for my admech
@@elfatmano appreciate thank you, even if I go with another method will always look into it. So thanks for that. My white spirit arrived so going to try a 50 / 50 mix with the spirit an grime an attempt a recess wash, start there as first attempt. Then most likely try the mig on my land raider 👍🏻
@@elfatmano just a quick return to this as my Mig wash is en route, do you think it down ?
where ya been pal?
I'm still here bud, just had to take a little hiatus!
why was this channel abandoned one year ago?
Someone has been watching Umbrella Academy
Haha yes I have!
How is no one making the umbrella academy reference??
Haha finally! I was waiting for someone to pick up on that!
