    Just by portraying your first tarantula having lived to the ripe old age of 30 years old, with most in the hobby only living to the age of 25 means that you are not only an exceptional keeper but a leader, a role model to us all! By giving her the nickname "Miss Fatty" means that you might have spoiled her and over fed her a little. To me this reflects not only a genuine love and appreciation for your animals but a profound respect for the sanctity of nature as well! You deserve only our greatest admiration and respect, a true example to us all not merely as hobbiests but to keepers as well!

    Awesome vid man! My first T was also a Grammostola Rosea I got her when i was 10 years old. Named her Taranchi, she was with me for 15 years before she passed. I miss that spider. She started my love for the hobby and now I have about 6 different ones. Taranchi will always live in my heart. The only T I regularly handled, oddly enough she enjoyed being handled. I say this because I could place my hand on the bottom of her enclosure and she'd walk up and on my hand for me to hold her. You Miss Fatty is a beautiful girl. Fingersc crossed for ya you have many more years with her

    You wld love Aus & NZ. Aus has many venemous creatures-the Syd. Fun. Web & several venemous snakes + crocodiles, cassowaries & great big sharks! But it has lots of beautiful, cute & strange creatures as well. Koala bears are adorable, kangaroos & wallabies fascinating + tasmanian devils, echidnas & platypuses. Scenery is stunning. Australia Zoo is fantastic-founded by Steve Irwin. We dont have any dangerous creatures in NZ cept for the Katipo which you wld probably never see anyway. We have beautiful birds lot of which are threatened species & huge efforts are being made to save them.We have an ancient lizard said to date from the dinasour age-the tuatara-but its quite small & an ancient insect called a Weta-looks like an oversized grasshopper. Our scenery is to die for: mountains, rivers, lakes, forests & beaches + good cities & towns. Hope you make it here sometime. 😊

    • @HDArachnids
      @HDArachnids  3 місяці тому

      @BigJFindAWay it is rare but not unheard of, I've seen 35 years several times in the groups on Facebook. Generally, it is the rose hairs you see hitting that 30ish year mark, though some of the brachypelma species are also incredibly long-lived as well. Several Aphonopelma species also exceed 20 years fairly regularly from what I've seen.

      That's great. The care you all take with your Ts is amazing: housing, re-housing, feeding, rescuing eggs, hatching out slings......Do you have a regular job as well? I live in New Zealand-we only have one venemous spider called a Katipo. They live in sand dunes & they're hardly ever seen. We have the Avondale spider-biggish but harmless. Apparently they used that one in the movie Arachnaphobia. We also have a Tunnel Web-not to be confused with Sydney's Funnel Web which ate deadly. The T Ws can get quite big but they too are harmless. I was gar dening once & disturbed one: it was almost 2" long with a big fat black abdomen. The grass actually rustled as it ran away! Gave me a fright.

Either we we sure love this old girl tho. She's still with us today and going strong

    • @loganbaileytarantulabehavi1574
      @loganbaileytarantulabehavi1574 2 роки тому +2

      Yeah I think over time 2 color morphs of same specie. I have actually bred a porteri with the rosea reddish morph. And had successful eggsac. Half were brown and pink carapace and other half was red and pink colors. Not sure truly if same specie with different morphs. I'm pretty sure thats all that happened in the wild. Two of the same specie from different locations found eachother. Its alot like the king baboon color by region and the color region difference with the obt.

    • @loganbaileytarantulabehavi1574
      @loganbaileytarantulabehavi1574 2 роки тому +2

      I have also had some luck with the different color morphs of the OBT. It was very difficult and went through about 10 or 15 different males of each color strain before I actually had successful pairing. But eventually got the two different colors to accept eachother.

    Great video man, loved it, really chilled guy, good vibes!
    With you having experience such as yours I was hoping you could take a min to possible help me.
    My Chilean Rose only eats about 2-3 times per year. She has a tank slightly bigger than yours & two hides. One is a fake rock type that double up as a hide and a bowl and the other is a slate hide. There's also fake leave inside to hide the entrances. She's also on a shelf in my room that doesn't receive much light, even during the day when my window is open, is this important? Should she receive more light?
    I feed her mainly large adult locusts but she doesn't eat and I never know when to feed her. I buy her locusts periodically but they go to waste:/
    Tried the adult nymph green ones and small cockroaches, same thing. I also use specific substrate for a Chilean rose.
    She's pretty docile and doesn't seem stressed. I also use s heat mat, would a lamp be better to use during day and mat at night or would that make no difference?
    Sorry for long comment, I don't expect you to read all of it. If you do, thanks, I appreciate it!
    Just want to see my T eat more. Idk if something is wrong with her or not but she's been going this way for years. The only think that gets me is when I first bought her, the pet shop owner said "feeding her once a week would be fine." She initially had a slightly smaller tank about your size and I upgraded it a bit to see if it made a difference (it didn't). It's not huge either, just a bit bigger.
    If you're willing to share any tips at all that would be great!

    • @HDArachnids
      @HDArachnids  2 роки тому +2

      Thanks I appreciate the kind words and no problem at all helping you out. Unfortunately with this species long periods of not eating are very common, mine has gone a year and a half without eating more than once. I offer her food every 2 or 3 weeks generally and if she doesn't eat it within 24 hours I remove it and try again next time. We have a roach colony so we always have feeders on hand. The waste thing is tough, if you have a local pet shop thst will sell judt one feeder at a time thst would be an option or you could simply add more tarantulas to your family 😀. The heat matt is actually not good for tarantulas of any species, same with a heat lamp. Any species in the hobby will thrive just fine at normal room temps anywhere from 65 F on up is perfectly safe. A heat matt can actually cook your T if it gets hot enough. They generally burrow to escape heat and don't have the capacity to realize the source is underneath them and as far as lamps go a quick search will bring up just as many horror stories. Pet shops tell you that you need them to sell product basically. As long as your room isn't dipping into the 50s regularly I would absolutely remove any direct heat source and adjust the room temp instead. As far as light or a photo period goes, they will be just fine in basically any setting as long as it is not in direct sunlight which can quickly overheat an enclosure. Dark all the time is fine, some light during the day is fine, lights on at night are fine. None of these will adversely affect a T other than it maybe staying hidden during the brighter periods. I hope this has been helpful and I suggest checking out a few groups on Facebook to learn more and see what is out there. There are several great groups, The Tarantula Life is one I highly recommend and actually admin for. The Tarantula Collective is another great group as well.

      They do make a great beginner species. They are very hardy and forgiving of husbandry mistakes and tend to be pretty mellow, although temperment definitelyvaries between individuals of any species. No tarantula is really aggressive persay, they just get defensive when disturbed. As long as you respect the animal and interact properly in a given situation, you don't really need to worry too much about that too much.

      She is doing great still. Been on a hunger strike the last couple months as usual lol but she looks great and is showing no signs of aging really.

      @@HDArachnids Thanks for the reply. Appreciated. Good to know that hope she lives 10 years more. Btw what is the key to have that lifespan?

      @@Alone-go2is i really have done nothing special. Just keep them in an appropriate enclosure and feed em and keep water in the dish and its about that simple lol. Honestly for the first 10 years or so my husbandry was horrid as I listened to the pet shop employees. She made it through like a trooper though

      That would be a great idea for a senior science project for sure. Just finished the interview gonna edit it and throw in some feeding clips and pics of various spiders and post it and he is gonna use the video for his project.
