    Just by portraying your first tarantula having lived to the ripe old age of 30 years old, with most in the hobby only living to the age of 25 means that you are not only an exceptional keeper but a leader, a role model to us all! By giving her the nickname "Miss Fatty" means that you might have spoiled her and over fed her a little. To me this reflects not only a genuine love and appreciation for your animals but a profound respect for the sanctity of nature as well! You deserve only our greatest admiration and respect, a true example to us all not merely as hobbiests but to keepers as well!

      Wow! Is this kind of longevity unique to the two rose hair species? How long can these fabulous creatures actually live?!?!

    • @HDArachnids
      @HDArachnids 4 місяці тому

      @BigJFindAWay it is rare but not unheard of, I've seen 35 years several times in the groups on Facebook. Generally, it is the rose hairs you see hitting that 30ish year mark, though some of the brachypelma species are also incredibly long-lived as well. Several Aphonopelma species also exceed 20 years fairly regularly from what I've seen.

      They do make a great beginner species. They are very hardy and forgiving of husbandry mistakes and tend to be pretty mellow, although temperment definitelyvaries between individuals of any species. No tarantula is really aggressive persay, they just get defensive when disturbed. As long as you respect the animal and interact properly in a given situation, you don't really need to worry too much about that too much.

    You wld love Aus & NZ. Aus has many venemous creatures-the Syd. Fun. Web & several venemous snakes + crocodiles, cassowaries & great big sharks! But it has lots of beautiful, cute & strange creatures as well. Koala bears are adorable, kangaroos & wallabies fascinating + tasmanian devils, echidnas & platypuses. Scenery is stunning. Australia Zoo is fantastic-founded by Steve Irwin. We dont have any dangerous creatures in NZ cept for the Katipo which you wld probably never see anyway. We have beautiful birds lot of which are threatened species & huge efforts are being made to save them.We have an ancient lizard said to date from the dinasour age-the tuatara-but its quite small & an ancient insect called a Weta-looks like an oversized grasshopper. Our scenery is to die for: mountains, rivers, lakes, forests & beaches + good cities & towns. Hope you make it here sometime. 😊

I came across T breeders on line like Dark Den, Dave's Little Beasties, Tarantula Kat & Exotics Lair. Find them fascinating. That's awesome! Those are all great channels too. I also really enjoy the tarantula collective. We currently have about 400 or so counting slings from a couple recent sacs. About 150 adults of 75 ish different species.

      That's great. The care you all take with your Ts is amazing: housing, re-housing, feeding, rescuing eggs, hatching out slings......Do you have a regular job as well? I live in New Zealand-we only have one venemous spider called a Katipo. They live in sand dunes & they're hardly ever seen. We have the Avondale spider-biggish but harmless. Apparently they used that one in the movie Arachnaphobia. We also have a Tunnel Web-not to be confused with Sydney's Funnel Web which ate deadly. The T Ws can get quite big but they too are harmless. I was gar dening once & disturbed one: it was almost 2" long with a big fat black abdomen. The grass actually rustled as it ran away! Gave me a fright.

She started my love for the hobby and now I have about 6 different ones. Taranchi will always live in my heart. The only T I regularly handled, oddly enough she enjoyed being handled. I say this because I could place my hand on the bottom of her enclosure and she'd walk up and on my hand for me to hold her. You Miss Fatty is a beautiful girl. If i had a communal set up for h gigas i would do a vivarium with fish and live plants. This is a species i would do a all out enclosure for due to their unique attributes of being known to go into water catch fish etc.

    • @HDArachnids
      @HDArachnids 8 місяців тому

      We did try a paladarium style setup with a pond feature with one lone feeder goldfish and a dozen gigas for about 8 or 9 months. I only ever saw one gigas in the water and the fish "earl" is actually still alive in its own tank now living his best life lol. I was hopeful I would see more action as far as being in the water or fishing and I am sure I missed a lot too but that isn't to say you won't have better luck. I eventually took it down as it was just more maintenance time to keep the water feature running nicely and clean than I wanted to invest. I would definitely encourage you to try it out though. It was a lot of fun to do for sure.
