Which Rose Hair Tarantula Species I Got? G. rosea & G. porteri Special

  • Grammostola rosea or the Chilean Rose Hair tarantula belongs to the most kept pet tarantulas around the globe. In this video we show you the differences between the hobby material of Grammostola rosea and Grammostola porteri and cover their natural lifestyle in their country of origin to help you better understand the needs these species have for keeping them successful in captivity as pet tarantulas. Chilean Rosea Hair tarantulas are best bought as certified captive-bred specimens to help the breeding programs around the world to keep this species established within our hobby - with the stop of the legal exportation of tarantulas from Chile, this species might be disappearing in the near future within the pet tarantula hobby when not bred in high numbers.

    It's just a shame. If novice keepers started breeding them from the start we should have the more quantities of both species in the pet trade in a form of baby slings. Even more in captivity than their wild parents that were collected legally from the wild decades ago. Problem with most novice keepers is most of them are only after that wow factor with absolutely no interest whatsoever in breeding these magnificent spiders. Very shameful I tell ya.

    Seems that people have different experiences with coco fiber
    I actually use it to make more stable substrate mixtures
    The only reason I don’t use it exclusively is because of the moisture evaporation
    I do have one Asian arboreal on coco peat but her enclosure has a drainage layer with standing water in it so it never dries out (I do see a lot of you-tubers (like Petco from the dark den) that don’t keep standing water in the drainage layer making it completely obsolete)

    I would reckon the hobby material is a complete mess of hybrids that will never again untangle. Maybe it'd be best to just call all specimens in captivity "Grammostola sp." and call it a day until the wild populations have been sorted out and properly classified.

    I have a Porteri sling. For a while after the imports stopped, I wasn't seeing Rosehairs offered for sale. But I guess some breeding programs have been successful, and they have been available in the US at reasonably cheap prices. The thing about my sling is that it is a little timid. I have to prekill the food items for it to eat. At least it does eat.

    The G Porteri I had 20 years ago was absolutely gorgeous. In the 3 yrs I had her, she molted 3 times. She was already pretty big when I got her, but the pet store also sold slings, so not sure about origin. I ended up donating her to a sixth grade class in a school in Montecito Calif. She was super friendly but very good hunter catching crickets in midair before they touched the ground! I starting feeling sorry for the crickets, plus the noise at night in my room. Too bad I didn't know other things to feed her since there was literally no info around back then. So it is really great what you do on this channel. Thank you

    • @birdspiders
      @birdspiders  4 роки тому +1

      yes you can do that, almost everyone does it and there are no negative side effects detected as far as I know.
      Ideally you go with specimens from different eggsacks if you can, but if not - also no problem, not like in mammals and reptiles where the offspring have bad deformations.
