I will always hate David Stern & Dan Gilbert for this bullshit. CP3 should've been on the Lakers winning championships. This has caused a domino effect against the Lakers that has resulted in them starting from scratch to build a championship team. the veto in my opinion did help smaller markets and less popular locations attract players they wouldn't have been able to otherwise. if the lakers stayed a prominent location no one would have gone to okc or new orleans or even golden state.

I think you grossly overestimated the value of the trade from the Lakers. The Hornets would have received 28 year old Kevin Martin, 31 year old Scola and 32 year old Lamar Odom. All decent players, but not assets for a rebuilding team. The pick they were projected to get was from the Knicks, who were a top playoff team back then led by a in-his-prime 'Melo. Moreover, they were taking on large salaries. In short, that deal was TERRIBLE for a team who was taking on a full flight rebuild. There's not a single rebuilding assets in that bunch, the team would be hamstrung with cap issues and there's not a long-term asset for the team to build around. It was an AWFUL deal. The Clips deal featured 23 year old Eric Gordon, who just had dropped 22 a game in his 3rd year. That can be the kind of player a team rebuilds around. Kaman was a double-double machine back then. Al-Farouq Aminu was the 8th overall pick the prior year. Plus they got Minny's unprotected 2012 pick and everyone knew Minny was going to be awful. So at the time someone would see this trade as a young potential All-Star, a good big man in the prime of his career, a guy with big upside and a likely top 5 or 6 pick. Those are all assets that a team could rebuild around. It just so happened that Gordon got injured, Kaman wasn't a good fit, Aminu didn't amount to anything, Minny doubled their winning percentage and the draft happened to get very weak after the 8th or 9th pick (Lillard, Barnes and Drummond were 3 of the 4 picks prior to the 10th selection). In short, kind of the worst case scenario happened here. But overall, the NBA was allowed to reject the deal and they should have because it was a terrible offer from the Lakers.

I will always hate David Stern & Dan Gilbert for this bullshit. CP3 should've been on the Lakers winning championships. This has caused a domino effect against the Lakers that has resulted in them starting from scratch to build a championship team. They missed the Playoffs a bunch of years consecutively for the first time in Lakers history. There was nothing unfair about this trade for the league to nix it for "basketball reasons". To be fair as far as the Lakers are concerned after he fact, they made some HORRIBLE management decisions like giving up 1st picks for Steve Nash and the idiotic head coaching decisions (Mike Brown, Mike D'Antoni).

You make very valid points Dom, but my thing is that the league not only allowed CP3 to be traded, but he was traded to the EXACT SAME MARKET!!! If the league cared about parity between the big and small markets, they would have nixed the Clipper deal as well. The heat the 2 years before lebron joined were barely above .500 in win/loss ratio. He made the team good with the other players that joined. KD joined the best regular season team ever that lost the finals by 1 win and the team that beat him in the playoffs by 1 win . There’s no comparison.

I think you grossly overestimated the value of the trade from the Lakers.
The Hornets would have received 28 year old Kevin Martin, 31 year old Scola and 32 year old Lamar Odom. All decent players, but not assets for a rebuilding team. The pick they were projected to get was from the Knicks, who were a top playoff team back then led by a in-his-prime 'Melo. Moreover, they were taking on large salaries. In short, that deal was TERRIBLE for a team who was taking on a full flight rebuild. There's not a single rebuilding assets in that bunch, the team would be hamstrung with cap issues and there's not a long-term asset for the team to build around. It was an AWFUL deal.
The Clips deal featured 23 year old Eric Gordon, who just had dropped 22 a game in his 3rd year. That can be the kind of player a team rebuilds around. Kaman was a double-double machine back then. Al-Farouq Aminu was the 8th overall pick the prior year. Plus they got Minny's unprotected 2012 pick and everyone knew Minny was going to be awful. So at the time someone would see this trade as a young potential All-Star, a good big man in the prime of his career, a guy with big upside and a likely top 5 or 6 pick. Those are all assets that a team could rebuild around. It just so happened that Gordon got injured, Kaman wasn't a good fit, Aminu didn't amount to anything, Minny doubled their winning percentage and the draft happened to get very weak after the 8th or 9th pick (Lillard, Barnes and Drummond were 3 of the 4 picks prior to the 10th selection). In short, kind of the worst case scenario happened here.
But overall, the NBA was allowed to reject the deal and they should have because it was a terrible offer from the Lakers.
