Larry Bird and Bill Laimbeer have genuinely hated each other for over 30 years

- Larry Bird and Bill Laimbeer stood in the middle of an intense Celtics-Pistons rivalry spanning the late 1980s and early 1990s. But the individual feud between those two wasn't just a battle within that war. It was personal. It was beef.
Starting with his trade to the Pistons in the early 1980s, Laimbeer built a reputation as not just a strong rebounder and scorer, but a relentless pest. On one hand, he'd make dirty and dangerous plays, then act like nothing had happened. On the other hand, he'd flop and whine to bait the referees into calling fouls on his opponents.
Nobody despised Laimbeer for this quite as much as Bird did. Bird's public campaign against Laimbeer's style of play dated back to the Celtics-Pistons playoff series in 1985, and really took off after Laimbeer started a brawl by fouling Bird hard in the 1987 playoffs. Bird accused Laimbeer of intentionally trying to injure him, and never withdrew the accusation. Even decades later, these two NBA legends maintain an icy distance because of how things played out on the court.
This beef might never end, so in this episode, we learn about what built it.

That Laimbeer interview about Birds executive decisions and coaching made me spit out my drink. "That would drive me nuts. I'd probably quit."
And bird eventually did quit. He did not succeed after firing Isiah Thomas as head coach.

They were both funny. They were both intelligent competitors as well. These games were war back then.
Liar. Stop using that false, played-out "spit my drink out" nonsense. Kids do that stuff.
Larry Bird did not "submit" to Jordans Bulls. Jordan was 0 and 6 against Bird in the playoffs. Birds back gave out.
If only he stayed healthy
Bird himself said that mj was god in shorts.
They wouldn't of beat them that year regardless. Bird was past his prime and Jordan was entering his. The 0 and 6 is more based on Jordan not having a squad vs Bird having a full squad. Not saying a full squaded Jordan beats the Celts every game. But they'd have at least two or three series wins.
Also in 80s Jordan lost to Bucks, Pistons in playoffs multiple times. Bird played just 1.5 more season than MJ, MJ retired in his prime 2x (both times after winning championship), MJ could have had 10 rings if he didn't retire, "Birds back give out" then , MJ never lost in his prime, he retired at top twice, nobody could stop MJ but MJ in his prime and he did that twice. If Bird didn't take care of his body and MJ did, I don't think we can blame MJ for that, that is on Larry to take care of his back.

The thing is...you NEVER see Laimbeer on a show with other old NBA stars. A lot of people will give props to Dumars, Thomas, and even Rodman before they will say anything nice about Laimbeer. And most of the old Pistons give him his props as a player, but you never get the feeling he was well-liked.
Rodman wasn't going around trying to badly hurt people. He played hard, and maybe not always entirely within the rules, but it didn't seem like he was genuinely trying to seriously hurt anybody. Laimbeer would literally try to assault and seriously injure the best players. His dirtyness was on a different level, which is also actually extremely rare for the really big guys, who usually seem averse to appearing to be bullies. Shaq could be a bit of a bully, but pushing people over is not nearly as bad as knocking someone off balance when they're three feet off the ground.

The entire league hated the Bad Boys really. Karma kinda came for them though seeing as how many of their careers ended early and they're rarely celebrated in the league.
spongeaang98 disagree. They were no more different than the Celtics who played the same way, the teams throughout the 1970s (see Washington punch on Rudy Tomjonovich), and the 1980s. Detroit is a small-market team but was winning championships with that style of play - that’s when it became a problem. The truth is that the league intervened with flagrant foul rules, no hand-check rules (benefited Jordan), etc. and Detroit broke up the team too early. They also didn’t draft well after 1987. Isiah, Edwards, Vinnie, Aguirre and Laimbeer were old, yes. Joe Dumars was still in his prime, Rodman was growing into his prime (see 1995-98 Bulls Run). Overall, they were a dynasty. There was no karma at all against Detroit.

Very well done and very entertaining. As a long-time Chicago professional sports fan, I've never hated any team like the bad boys Pistons. Bill Laimbeer was at the top of the list. It was hard to hate an opponent like Larry Bird, who was so spectacular.
It would have been a little different if Laimbeer had any other skills, but he was just a big thug. And it worked.
Twitter would've been on fire back then
but then again Twitter's mascot was named after Larry the Legend. 😉

Pippen vs Rodman. Go!
Watching Laimbeer back then was a treat. Dirtiest player ever and he absolutely loved it. I live in Utah and remember going to a Jazz/Pistons game back in the day. Laimbeer and Rodman were abusing the Hell out of Stockton all night. Mark Eaton went after Rodman. Classic game.
Bill simmons "fan" 😂😂
Hes a sports media personality and writer.... but when it comes to boston sports i think its fair to call him a fan
Just because you're a celebrity that doesn't mean you're not a fan 🤷♂️
Jarmel Bennett it was a shot because yeah he’s definitely a fan but he’s done a lot.
Fan-boy
This. This content is what I live for. Tell me the stuff the documentaries and testimonials won't.

That was the best era in Basketball as far as I was concerned. It takes player 3 or so years to figure out how to play and teams about that long to figure out how to beat their rival. In that period from 1980 to 1990 the 76'ers won 3 of 4 from the Celtics till Dr J was too old and the Celtics had plugged the holes to finally pass them. The Celtics then won 4 straight while east coast rivals tried to figure them out (including the '85 76ers with Dr J, Moses Malone and a rookie Charles Barkley).
Eventually Bird, McHale and Parish wound down and the Pistons rose to the top taking the next 3 to finish out the decade.
It took the Bulls 3 years to figure out how to beat the Pistons during the end of the 80s (and put together the pieces to do it) which mostly focused on smothering defense and a new decade started off the 90s.
It was over 20 years before that kind of dominance occurred again with the Heat then the Cavs controlling the East from 2011-18
1986: real nba rivalries
2020: enemies join same team

And they would call it the evolution of the league lmao

what ememies have joined the same team?

I see a Beef History episode between Magic Johnson and Isiah Thomas coming next, fingers crossed
Oh no
Brian Johnson you could pretty much do Isiah Thomas vs everybody.. dude wasn’t exactly on everyone’s Christmas card list!
Thomas as Jordan is probably the bigger beef
Paul Nieschulz yeah much rather see that lol
Weren’t Isiah and Magic famously like best friends? Or did they fallout?
"I'd probably quit" Funny coming from a coach who's team starts the season with an 8 outta 12 chance of making the playoffs lol
Lol let’s be honest. Anyone would rather coach a terrible NBA team than a “great” WNBA team.
Beef history: Antonio Brown vs his career. 😂😂😂
kindley fernand should be Antonio Brown vs Mr.Big Chest
🤔🤔🤔
Please 😂😂😂
LOL!! Yes, and Antonio Brown won. He killed his career.
Laimbeer was one of Birds moms favorite players. That's hilarious 😂😂
And the real reason why Bird hated Bill.
Bet ya Laimbeer wasn't her favorite anymore once he started on her son tho'.
@Dingle Barry lmfao You got me.
7:09 What-a-pass from the Three Eyed Bird
Bill Laimbeer was like a classical spoiled rich kid who grows up to be the obnoxious villain everyone hates 😂
He played the game he considered to be important the mental one very well. But he did spme dangerous fouls that he shouldnt.
14:58 Calling him a "Fan" would be an understatement.
Damn, Bird's mom loved the only two players from his college days that would later be the same players who'd give him the most fits during his pro career, who'd ever imagine that.
She had a keen eye for talent. Maybe she needs a front office job ha
Larry’s birds tombstone is gonna read “I still don’t like him”

His job was to agitate and walk away. He knew what he planned on doing. Not hurt. Bird had more fist fights than bill did. Talk about dirty.
Bird never even played in the 89 playoff series, doesn't count.

"He was interviewed by a fan"
Laimbeer played the most underrated role in all of sports (or life for that matter); he was the guy that took all the hate to relieve the pressure from his teammates, allowing them to thrive.
People hate laimbeer for what every single player in the league did its hilarious
He deliberately tried to hurt people though. That's not sportsmanlike.
Like Draymond Green or Patrick Beverley?
@je ffw1267 you're soft😂😂
my favorite dig: IN 2013, BIRD WAS INTERVIEWED BY A "FAN"
“Sometimes when you agitate someone they stay upset forever” lol yes obviously
Love these rivalries and this era of basketball. When it was about winning at all cost....over friendship and money. Made for the best sports entertainment a fan could ask for.
I love he called Bill Simmons just "a fan" 😂 It would have been a little better if they said "groupie"
Thank god this dude is back. I can’t stand the other persons voice who narrates these videos
This was when the NBA was absolutely amazing.
Back when you could play defense and physical without getting suspended.
Well u should blame them for making nba how it is now
They did too much n the rules had to change to reduce conflicts
It became something bad to watch
The nba changed the rules to sustain their reputation for the better
Stop hating everything in this generation 😡
It still is
Back when players were looking at the floor while dribbling and could only take 3 while stand still, thank god they added skill back into the game.
@@striker4life360 lol fr
I'm a Celtics fan from back in the day. One of the best things about that was listening to the great Johnny Most do the play by play. He had a nickname for many of the opposing players, but for Laimbeer he had two; "His Heinous" and "Counterfeit Bill". And yes, those Celtics-Pistons battles were brutal LOL!
"Bill Laimbeer was more than a thug, but that's what he'll be remembered for" - Dennis Rodman
A thug that can play ball
He was the first 3 and D big man and set a template for most current big men.
It’s so “ugh” watching a dirty player try to plead their case 😂
What you don't like seeing players do something obviously dirty then pretend they are saints? Lol
When are you going to do a beef of SB Nation vs Bill Simmons?
"interview with a fan" lmao
The Celtics hate for Laimbeer transcended into Pop Culture as well. Kevin McHale was a guest on the TV show Cheers. There's a scene where they were looking at an X-Ray of an adult male gorilla's foot and KM suggested it was Laimbeer.
