@@djbouzy I saw that and this got recommended to me and once again, Austin delivers exceptionally! VR & Au5 are goated af for sharing this kinda sound design
some producers on social media bash serum, but the fact that we're always finding new uses for it shows that this plugin still holds up to standards even almost a decade after its release
I always like to tell my friends how, in my opinion, Au5 is the most advanced and creative dubstep producer who knows his craft better than anyone else. And with every tutorial Austin releases, I'm more certain of that belief. This one is no exception.
When anyone ever just says, Vital is free Serum, I always point out that Serum FX exists. It's so slept on as a standalone FX rack plugin with all the nice built in filters, distortion modules, compressor/OTT, etc. But here you are showing off Serum FX to a whole new level. I completely forgot about the Noise OSC being able to route audio in in the FX version.
And even with Serum itself I feel like it can still do a lot more than Vital. It's just kind of "hidden" features that you have experiment with it. I like it when I can use a synth (or any plugin) by sort of stepping out of the standard UI and think more about composing things on top. For example rendering OSCs + FX into their own wavetables is something I do a ton without having to layer a bunch of tracks with Serum on it; and I can easily save them as their own wavetables or even entire presets.
Being able to adjust all the filter parameters within Serum FX like you would on an actual Serum patch, and have them count towards the resonator effect is probably the most useful thing about this - I'll definitely be trying this out in the next few days 😮
So glad you did a video on this! Saw a recording of Virtual Riot showing his use of serum FX for resonating with this method on his Instagram but he never went too in depth for it Definitely gotta try this out
Another epic video, it really showcases how much creative technique can be unlocked from understanding fundamental principles. Serum supports MTS-ESP, I would recommend checking it out for microtonal use, as it will "wirelessly" control all your Serum instances (and many other synths) allowing for dynamic microtuning on the fly!
the best part about music production/sound design, is exploring the infinite world of auditory wonder. Using our modern-day tools to create never-before-heard sounds that will fit into your composition and captivate the ears of many.
If you want a SUPER full spectrum covering sound without running into the lower interval limit, mimicing the pattern of the harmonic series is great. You can play only each new note in the octave it occurs in (Adjusted for your chord) and have it play octaves thereof like AU5 did with his chord here. Be wary of distortion though, wish we had clean solutions to move harmonics into note positions AFTER distortion. To get a feel for this, grab any synth that let's you choose harmonics and use only the root and it's octaves, it'll give kind of an organ sound. Just making that 5th harmonic minor rather than ~major is a HUGE trick btw., use planed chords with that for a really nice retro house/jungle or ~2010 deephouse sound etc., for example.
Stumped on the routing midi to an audio track. I tried to replicate what you have on the screen at 1:24 but it gives me no option to select the SerumFX plugin on the audio track. The lower output channel menu (just below the name of the "to" track) is stuck on "Track In" and I don't see any way to select the plugin. Wondering if there's something in my preferences that I need to change for this to works, seems like a really cool technique EDIT: Figured it out! an important note in case anyone has the same problem as me: if the midi track has any effect that transmits audio on it, you do not get the midi out option. By default I have every new track load with an eq and utility but deleting these made the routing work as Austin shows.
Yes the midi track must be blank or it will become an instrument track. You can also use the External Instrument device and send midi to another track using that. Useful when you want to use a parallel instrument rack with a synth and to send midi out simultaneously.
Did u see my insta story before you made this? 😁 love it thanks for sharing the knowledge! I hope some other audio effect plugins in the future support multi-voice filters and/or resonators, I think the way serumFX does it is really smart. It would be easy to program a volume-compensation for however many individual audio streams are running through it. Edit: nvmind I saw your other comment about you recording this a while ago :)
Any poly synth with an input should be able to do this effect, even old ones like zebra / nord modular / scope modular etc.. and now with serum Love it! Love that you share everything!
Not wrong either. Its actually shockingly close. Also too with another FL plugin using Vocodex just over any sound and using the "Hold" option along with snapping to specific note frequencies will basically have the modal filter thing going on too. Allows for instant color bass.
I have a feeling Serum 2 is coming out soon. I think it will be a gamechanger. Steve is working on it for so long. And im so happy existing users can upgrade for free
I've been doing this in Vital for some time now using the audio engine or the granular wavetable engine technique (there are tutorials for this) and have to say that polyphonic filters are POG. I don't own serum but I know the filters are nice
Ive found that serum, serum fx and omnisphere do everything I need. Maybe diva if I feel like murdering my cpu. serum is such a good synth. would be super cool if you could do granular stuff in serum though. then id use serum for everything
What AM I doing wrong? It doesn't work. From 1:34 I enabled Noise and filter, set the midi track to output to the Serum FX track, and All I get is silence. Serum is showing that sound is coming in from the audio in on that track, but nothing is coming out. Using Live 12. Does this not work in Live 12?
Hi, amazing tips here, thx ! Has anyone else struggled to find the Carlos Harmonic C tuning file ? I foud sooo many microtonal tuning files looking online but not this one !
HOLY SHIT THIS IS AWESOME!!!!! I keep seeing things for serum fx that blow my mind, I had no idea serum fx was so powerful!! Thanks for the great video :D
11:45 Ok I was viewing this from the perspective of never having used Serum, but I can follow along with Harmor in FL, viewing the spectrum with wavecandy and manipulating it through some other weird combination of external or internal tools... Well, until this point. I'm actually blown away how you've transformed the growl, it's _incredibly_ musical and each stage you breezed through to get to this point was fascinating and humbling to watch. It would take hours for me to get to the timestamp. Even though I've been making music for years, I feel like I can work fast and just paint the soundscape I need, but it still takes time. Maybe I should get Serum, since you've done effect to that growl that gave me stank face lmao
I literally had to stand up from my chair and walk around my room multiple times as I had to process every single thing I just saw in this video. What the fuck Austin.
He certainly knows modern sound design better than me! I don't think anyone knows Serum better than me, considering how much stuff I put in there for myself, undocumented :o)
First off. Thank you for teaching so much. I have learned so much from your masterclass and youtube. Second, Would you be willing to share your theme you are using here?
