I'm not sure if he's the heart and soul, but Zach is definitely the skeleton of the band. Like, he's the guy that manages to make Ride and Andy's insanity sound coherent.
Also Andy engineers samples and they add em to a VDrum performed by Zach which makes up much of their instrumental composition. The musicianship of this band is top notch. Future primitive digital.

If I could describe this album, it’s that it almost feels illegal to listen to for some reason. The sounds are so off putting but so encapsulating at the same time… Great album and great reaction!
So much people talk about death grips as this completely alien bizarre inaccessible thing but they r actually really indebted to 80s and 90s electronic music genres, industrial, techno, digital hardcore and such, and this context sometimes gets lost in younger people but becomes clearer when we see someone like your dad, who was around at the time these things were most popular, listen to their music and immediately enjoy it and not find it off putting at all
I think it’s bizarre and inaccessible because of it being tied to hip hop. The closest the hip hop audience has heard about was yeezus. But Ye has this cult like status that makes his fans enjoy everything. So seeing something more experimental by a group most don’t care about, they just see this as noise.
I think the main reason DG gets hyped as being so goddamn intense is because nearly every fan just trying out their stuff with minimal knowledge can remember their first time of feeling like you’re audibly getting your shit rocked by their music, and it’s a lot of young people like myself getting introduced to it so there is that newness to it. That being said, this is also easily their most accessible project, whereas something like Bottomless Pit, Year of the Snitch, or even a lot of Powers that B have way more experimental and fucked sounding songs on it overall. This is still my favorite of theirs though, and I’m glad you guys dig it so much!
honestly there is something magical about their music. there is this energy that I've never found in other music. really weird comparision but the microphones also has this niche sound that i havent found in other musicians.
This reaction couldn't have been more perfectly timed. I feel like your dad was ready for this album and I'm so glad to see how much he enjoyed listening to it. Dope stuff as always guys.
I’m honestly impressed by how much of this album made sense to Dad on his first listen! This thing felt so wild and confusing to me the first few times I heard it until finally one day it clicked. It’s one of my all-time favorites and I still hear something new every time I sit down with it, even after (no joke) hundreds of listens
Your dads spot on about “falling asleep” to this. Death grips is such a hypnotic vibe. It’s my gym music. I just zone out to this stuff, it keeps me vibing the whole time in the gym.
Saw Death Grips live in 2012. One the most insane live sets I've ever seen. You should show your dad their live stuff he would really appreciate Zach Hill's drumming. Especially the video where Zach Hill plays everything while handcuffed. Very special.
I think it's definitely worth mentioning, for whenever you get around to The Powers That B, that the instrumentals on the first half are ENTIRELY Zach Hill on an electronic drum kit playing every sound, which not only gives a deeper appreciation and insight to his skill as a drummer but also gives clarity on why the björk samples are so choppy and why the album sounds so glitchy in general. (Also knowing that Zach Hill doesn't use a double bass pedal so his insanely fast kick drums are done with one foot makes it more technically impressive). I think it's easy to overlook the instrumental in certain ways because it's so electronic and intricate you assume it was just perfectly crafted in a DAW but knowing what you're hearing is actually being performed and recorded live by one person on a drum kit adds such a deeper sense of emotion to the songs, especially, for example, on the outro to Big Dipper and the majority of Have A Sad Cum BB.
Love to see your dad is enjoying this! maybe he'll like more of all the experimental hip hop like jpegmafia or something or maybe even just more death grips. Great Vid!
He flinched at Hustle Bones 😭 I think one of my favorite parts of death grips is the samples. They sample the weirdest things, some super obscure music, the most influential instrumentals, and themselves. The widest spread of sample types of anyone I've listened to.

I feel like the son (have watched so many videos of their but always forget their names) is pretty well heard. He probably already knows most albums his dad has heard.
