"This is Frank (Ocean) by the way." "Oh, is it Frank? Right here? BUT THERE'S DRUMS!" That part got me! hahahaha Kevin is really understading more about hip hop culture then a lot of people.
One thing I've noticed recently about this album is that On Sight and Bound 2 are both opposite yet perfect bookends for this album, with On Sight being a very hard, intense song cut up by breaks of a much softer sample, whereas Bound 2 is a soft sample song that is interjected by a hard bass more reflective of the rest of Yeezus throughout. Amazing that 9 years later there are still layers that you can uncover from this album
And the sample says “he’ll give us what we need, it maybe not be what we want” the entire album is is minor key (expected major parts that contribute to the themes) expect the on sight sample and all of on sight. The whole album people were waiting for the character of Yeezus to break and old Kanye to come out, and he finally does that on bound 2. But that is after he talked about so much shit.
Wow, thank you Hivemind, I'm really glad you enjoy this series as much as I do! If you got Kevin on to do a video with you guys, that'd be really cool! I am wanted for numerous cases of tax evasion.
Bound 2 is meant for the album. It’s a purposeful contrast as it’s actually musical as opposed to the harshness of the rest of the album. It’s supposed to demonstrate the potential of the romance. It was overall indicative of him finally starting to date Kim and the hope he had for the relationship. It’s why you have that interlude in the middle of on On Sight. It foreshadows the music you’ll eventually get on Bound 2, an antidote to the intensity of everything else. Hope in the midst of darkness.
@@FilmColossus the only thing I don’t think you’re reaching on is the contrast.. ‘It’s why you have that interlude at the beginning of on sight. That early interlude foreshadows the music you’ll eventually get’ 💀 bro what
Chris also can’t believe I’m JUST realizing this. but the damn album cover confirms the dark side vs. light side theory / concept. I always thought it was like a reflection but it’s clearly WHICH / ONE imagery like TLOP
Fun fact: Kid cudi didn’t even record his feature for guilt trip! Kanye found those vocals that Cudi recorded for a demo and just chopped it and put it on guilt trip. It’s so crazy cuz his vocals go so well with the song and beat…also around that time was when Cudi left GOOD Music…kanye ironically used the part where he says “if you love me so much then why’d you let me go?”
Yep and it also caused a riff between the two that ended with Cudi checking himself into rehab and Kanye getting the crowd during the Life of Pablo tour to sing for Cudi’s well-being with the number 1 song in the country at the time, “Father Stretch My Hands pt.1”. Eventually they’d heal together and spawn the all powerful Kids See Ghosts
Charlie Wilson was the lead singer of the 70s and 80s funk band The Gap Band. They had a few very popular songs. He's also been consistently releasing solo work.
I was laughing so hard when he was like “oh so he’s not like an old singer” and I was over like no he definitely is LOL. Tyler has a bunch of Charlie Wilson on his work too which is dope too
The sample at the end of New Slaves was by a hungarian band called Omega, the song is called Gyöngyhajú Lány and it was a huge hit in the 70s in Europe. I’m kinda proud, cause i’m hungarian too
@@adambarath9179 the first CD I ever bought,in the mid 90s,was a classic rock compilation and this was the last song on it. love it ever since. Also, I saw Omega live a few times, great band
JUST AN FYI, the effect used on “Hold My Liquor” is called the “Prisimizer” effect. It’s used by fusing any auto-tune and the Antares Harmony Engine (really any harmony multiplier) together. Bon Iver was one of the first artists to use it in his music. Really beautiful sonically 🥰
Hold My Liquor isn't Prismizer, just the Antares Harmony Engine software - but they're related. Francis of Francis and the Lights "invented" the Prismizer by controlling Harmony Engine with a MIDI keyboard (obviously the functionality was there already but he was the first known to use it this way). Then he showed this to Justin Vernon of BI, whose engineer Chris Messina recreated the effect in hardware (Eventide H8000). The version that Justin uses on his albums is called the Messina. But on Yeezus it's just Harmony Engine running on an auto setting, no keyboard, which is what really makes the difference.
Honestly, I’d say Yeezus wasn’t that daring, at least compared to the experimental hip hop already coming out at the time. I’d say Yeezus is probably a moment in his career when Kanye was very much behind the curve.
@@harshbrownslol it was daring in the sense of how main stream kanye still was and in the public eye. He had just married Kim k who at the time was one of the most hated figures in the media and after just creating his magnum opus. Blood on the Leaves is a crazyyyy track and gets me hype every time🔥 so cool seeing your dad react to it. Been watching the whole Kanye series! Love the content.
Reminder that in the Pitchfork's readers poll that year it won both most overrated album and most underrated album of the year. That's how divisive it was.
I was SO mesmerized by this album when it came out, you have no idea. It was constantly on replay - especially blood on the leaves. It’s so cool to see your dad experience this for the first time, I felt 15 again.
What were your initial thoughts to "Blood on the leaves"? My friend cried when I broke down to her the meaning of the Nina Simone sample on Blood on the leaves. It's such a layered track-- Truly one of Kanye's best.
@@doitright5819 very similar to his in this videos but that was simply due to me experiencing the music and composition first. It was very different from what I’ve heard of Kanye up until that moment (not to imagine music in general in the early 2010’s). But as I listed again and again and finally looked into the sample he used, it became that much more grounded. It added onto the weight of the song. The original sample is so eerie and just overall morbid so although he changed it up here adds onto the monstrous theme I remember when I saw him live at SP tour, when it was dark and I heard that intro piano key - goosebumps. This song hits different when you experience it live
@@doitright5819 My fav song Kanye ever. I was just a kid when I first heard it, and I was in love with the song sonically. As I've grown up, I love what its about along with the way it sounds. One of ye's most powerful and heavy songs
I just spent the last 4 hours consuming your guys content after just discovering this channel and what a treat it has been. It's incredible that even though I've listened to all of these albums hundreds of times, it feels like the first time all over again listening to it with Kevin. Really great shit, guys. Really fantastic to see a kid and his dad bonding over music like this. Connor has a wonderfully eclectic taste in music and I'm glad he's sharing it with his dad and the world. I would really like to see Kevin react to Acid Rap by Chance!
Such a great point man. My love of rap runs deep, but I go in phases a lot more these days when I'm really not listening to any. Discovering this channel a few days ago and watching the 2 Kendrick videos then this one was thrilling all over again and a reminder of how amazing these albums are. My new favorite UA-cam.
About “Bound 2“ not supposed be there: pretty sure this song is supposed to act as a very tongue in cheek ending to the acid induced nightmare that is Yeezus. It is a complete shift in tone with themes centering around true love and finding the right person/building a family, almost suggesting an antidote to the previous nightmarish journey. But of course that comical happy ending reminiscient of a 60s TV show seems to good to be true and feels out place, we kinda know something is off. Uh-huh honey.
That and just as soon as you'd think the song is over, he hits you with "Jerome's in the house, watch ya mouth" almost like a twist ending. Implying his old demons (sex, drugs, ego, etc) are still around, which perfectly leads into TLOP
The sample used in "On Sight" that plays in the middle of the track states that "He'll give us what we need, but it may not be what we want.". This not only perfectly shows how he knew people would react to the album, but also it explains Yeezus as a whole. The album may not be what people wanted, but Kanye felt that we needed something not done yet by him, and something new in the mainstream world of music, which he definitely brought attention to.
When he was saying “this is brilliant” and you pointed at him right before the next switch in New Slaves 😂 love it. Pre yeezus, I was classic rock and U2 only with a Dad/family stuck in 1970, nothing new or risky allowed. This album singlehandedly changed my life and it’s wild that’s not an exaggeration. It changed my entire perspective on what was going on around me, and I’ll always have Yeezus to bring me back to my nostalgic teen days
Kanye used a crazy amount of old school samples for this album. Definitely a shift in the game at the time. Charlie Wilson is actually a very well known 70s and 80s legend. Was part of the gap band!!
@@Slipcubusknight Same. I wrote a comment about how Charlie Wilson is now 69 years old, then saw this part of the comment section. There are so many other verbal references that they don't understand that are hilarious in Kanye's music. Because it came from black culture. But it's ok. At least they love and respect the music.
Yeezus was the first Kanye album that I listened at launch, and I absolutely loved it. On Sight is such a great intro track because it just let you know that the album is different and that kanye is coming, "yeezy season approaching, fuck whatever y'all been hearing". Also he says to you is not what you want, "he'll give us what we need, it may not be what we want". That is directed at the guys that wanted the same things he did before, some wanted before 808's and some wanted MBDTF.
Always remember, this came after MBDTF. He could have easily stuck to that sound because it worked. But no, he decided he'd already made perfect, so instead he changed hip hop forever
This album is what made me Kanye fan... I didn't care for 808's, now that I'm much older I see the story connected between all the albums and it is truly amazing.
I’d like to add that Charlie Wilson is in fact an old singer. He made his name back in The Gap Band back in the 70’s and 80’s. Their biggest hit was probably “You Dropped A Bomb On Me”
Yeah Charlie Wilson is amazing. If people haven't seen it yet, they need to look up Kanye on Jools Holland. Charlie accompanies him on a performance of New Slaves and I can't listen to that song anymore without hearing Charlie's amazing adlibs
Kanye really took a big gamble on this project. And it sounded great as years passes. Really great reaction from you guys!! I cant wait for you guys to listen to The Life of Pablo next.

"as soon as they like you, make them unlike you" That lyric is exactly who he is. I never cared for him and when I read how bad this album was I had to hear it... and loved it! It's still the only one I really care for.
It was such a decisive album at the time. It’s like he took Hell of a Life and cranked it to 1000. But then he throws in Bound 2 to show you he could still do the soul sample songs if he wanted to. What a fantastic album Yeezus is.

This album came out my senior year in high school and I remember hanging with the boys that summer with this playing before we all went our separate ways for school. This album never fails to bring me back to that summer.
Charlie Wilson is an old singer. He just continues to make contemporary music. He was the frontman for the hitmaking Funk band The Gap Band. Check out their songs "Early In The Morning," "Outstanding," "Yearning For Your Love" and "You Dropped A Bomb On Me." He went solo in the 2000s and is highly in demand for hip hop acts like Kanye and Tyler The Creator.

I appreciate you Chris 🙏

@@dakota6050nah Hold My Liquor all the way through Guilt Trip is the best stretch of the album
Guilt trip and blood on the leaves def the best two songs on here
JUST AN FYI, the effect used on “Hold My Liquor” is called the “Prisimizer” effect. It’s used by fusing any auto-tune and the Antares Harmony Engine (really any harmony multiplier) together. Bon Iver was one of the first artists to use it in his music. Really beautiful sonically 🥰
Also I’m pretty sure Kevin has already heard it before on Blonde
Wasn't it invited by Francis and the lights?
@@filipmilczarek4456 Yeah, but Justin Vernon and one of his producers created their own version of it

The original sample is so eerie and just overall morbid so although he changed it up here adds onto the monstrous theme
I remember when I saw him live at SP tour, when it was dark and I heard that intro piano key - goosebumps. This song hits different when you experience it live

JEROME’s in the house at the end proves that something’s off about this happy ending
Also he says to you is not what you want, "he'll give us what we need, it may not be what we want". That is directed at the guys that wanted the same things he did before, some wanted before 808's and some wanted MBDTF.

This is what this whole Kanye journey prepared him for lmao.
I don’t even think prior Kanye experience could fully prepare someone for On Sight
The relationship the two of you have is what I wish I had with my Dad and what I hope to have with my future kids. Love your content guys.
I can’t imagine listening to YEEZUS with my dad 😂 it’s probably Kanye at his most unhinged and most creative.
Shout out to the ones who loved Yeezus from day 1. Y’all are the real ones.
Yeezus was my first Kanye album
@@furiousape7717 hell of a way to start listening to Kanye
@@walteravila7038 I was super into industrial music at the time, so it kinda hit me just at the right time. It got me back into rap.
I was alone in the wilderness lol but it's awesome that so many have come around over the years
When you guys do Donda you should do the standard version of the album minus the pt2s then tack on the 3 original bonus tracks to the end. (Life Of The Party, Up From The Ashes, Never Abandon Your Family)
One of my fave albums of all time. I think what’s not said enough is how kanye made that industrial rap sound accessible ? Like there’s still weird textures and out there sound design but every song has a catchy melody and/or an easy part to rap or sing along to. Also the album at one point was gonna be called ‘THANK GOD FOR DRUGS’ which is fun trivia imo lol.
