Eventually this album becomes a collection of earworms that will pop into your head once in a while and make you want to go back and listen. One of my favorite albums of all time.

I’ve always felt that Madvilliany is like a punk album in the world of hip-hop. Just a string of 1.5-2min tracks.
Raw, straight to the point, no choruses in sight, and still manages to be one of the greatest hip hop albums of all time.
IIRC, it was intentional to keep it short and be the antithesis of, what was at the time, verse hook verse hook verse format. This album was so ahead of its time it took me years to appreciate it.
36 chambers by Wu is for me the most punk rap album of all time but I'm mad into punk, so you could be onto something
@@achishukuteki941 totally agree. I've been a DOOM fan since KMD but it took a long while for me to fully appreciate this album. I listen to parts of it almost every day now. One of the greatest albums ever, of any genre.

Madvillainy is like Dooms White Album (Beatles). It's a relatively long album tracklist wise despite not being that long relatively speaking, consists of shorter songs and shows off the skill of everyone involved. It's just a shining example of the creators creativity and skill and is one of the greatest albums of all time. I don't think it's unfair to call it the White Album of Rap music. It definitely lives up to that name (I like it more than the white album and I'm a huge Beatles fan).

Actually guys, fancy clown isnt a breakup song at all. When he starts it off, he says “its victor” which is a previous persona of his. So its Viktor singing about how he lost his girl to a guy with a “tin crown face” aka his current persona, MF DOOM. This song is actually a flip on how people are always saying they could steal your girl. Fancy Clown is a bragging song about how much better hes gotten compared to his previous persona. So good, he could steal a girl from his younger self. Its soooo good

Idk about this. Operation Doomsday was released in 1999, Viktor Vaughn first released 2003, and again in 2004 meanwhile DOOM released Madvillany and M…FOOD in 2004 as well as 6 volumes of Special Herbs.

This album is a hard one to crack, especially if you're not that familiar with DOOM, his persona, his style and the mountain of lore around him and his other alter egos. I think the more your dad listens to him, this album will make more sense to him. It can be hard to even know what he's talking about when you first start listening to the Supervillain, and a lot of the genius can fly over your head.
Like with Fancy Clown it kind of seems simple, until you realise he is talking as Viktor Vaughn about his girlfriend cheating on him with MF DOOM, and then proceeding to diss DOOM as Viktor. This man was really taking shots at his own alter ego, from the POV of another alter ego, because no one else could touch him.
personally i found madvillainy the most accessible body of work from DOOM so far, with some of his other projects whether it's as viktor vaughn or king geedorah etc i haven't been able to get into it as much
@@lemiath Yeah I don't disagree, but I still think DOOM's music in general is quite inaccessible (not a bad thing, a lot of the best music is). This might be his least inaccessible but it's still tough if you're not familiar with him. My take is you need to hear a good amount of his music to start really liking it (I did at least), but this will probably be the first full album you really start liking.

MF DOOM’s reference to old shows, series, cartoons highlights his upbringing and childhood. His use of the mask from Marvel Comics villain Doctor Doom, which has nostalgic roots …but also is because he wanted to be known only based on his skills- not got his face. He was an amazing talent whose tracks always send me down memory lane!
His flow was SOO off-putting at first compared to traditional rappers, but over time I came to love, and then CRAVE his spasmodic rap style and unique stanzas. And of course you can’t forget the love of Jazz standards from MADLIB.

Listening to Madvillain without being balls deep in rap is like reading James Joyce without being deeply immersed in literature. Left-field shit plays with expectations set up from conventions, but you have to have lived the conventions for it to directly resonate.
Clearly you are balls deep in music though! And you are brave and open minded, good sirs!
While I'm not surprised that MF DOOM has caught interest from different people from all walks of life, especially in the day of the internet, I am surprised at how "well" liked he is when his references are so obscure or specific to a dude who grew up in 70s NY.

Don’t forget about Madlib, Madvillainy wouldn’t exist without him!
On later listens, what makes Madvilliany so special, to me at least, are those short moments in each song. The piano roll of All Caps, the woman's laugh and following horn section in Rainbows. The short musical nuances sometimes become why you remember the track or why you revisit. Rare to find an album that masters the density of two or so minutes each track has. They take you along to get a glimpse then drop you into another soundscape or environment, then you move on. Very special.

Perfectly stated and I completely agree. Those little nuggets that are just right but leave you wishing there was more. Madlib does them in Quasimoto tracks too.
I think the beauty of this album is just how your dad described it. There’s so many layers in the mix and so much panning that DOOM is the constant. Through the chaos the only thing that “makes sense” is DOOM, but the more you look into it, the more intricate the rhyme scheme and message of the song can be.
The genius of DOOM is that while doing a mostly stream of consciousness flow, from a comedic angle, he was still like making very very deep references and actually saying something. It wasn’t just hippity hop but if someone didn’t want to engage they could just take it at a surface level
Fun fact about Quasimoto: Madlib actually raps at a slower pace and speeds his voice up rather than pitching it up.
Raps at normal speed while running the audio through a vocal pitch effect on the SP303 Dr Sample.
I remember a promo on MySpace where early on, they asked if Quasimoto rapped with helium. He said no, he raps with a microphone.

Have a 20 yo daughter whom I first played MF DOOM to a few years ago.
Now we both rate him the best MC ever to do it !!!!
For me best 5 MCs ever in no order are Big Daddy Kane ,Rakim , Kool Keith , KRS1 & MF DOOM.......

You should totally do a clipping listen! I think your dad would love Daveed's skill on vocals especially on their last two horror albums.
Listened to this for the first time a couple weeks back, with no prior experience to DOOM or Madlib. Wasn’t what I was expecting but I loved it, couldn’t decide whether I should be trying to read and decipher the lyrics, since there are countless great quotables and wordplay, or just close my eyes and paint a picture in my head from the insane production, and the fact the vocals almost feel like an additional instrument at times. Truly unique listening experience
Exactly, I can totally relate, I enjoy it a lot and I didn't knew what to expect, on my first listen I tried to grow accustomed to the sound rather than the lyrics and it was a good idea since the record is strong on both fields. Now I'm trying to understand the double entendres and everything and I know that it's going to be tough, because DOOM seems to have a "hard to digest" type of music, it took me so much time to enjoy TPAB from Kendrick, which means that this album will take me a lot more time.. 😅 but I really like it so I guess that it will grow on me soon.
Personally I sit down with a joint some headphones and the tv on mute. The stuff DOOM flows about in these songs are unreal. The more you listen to what he is actually saying the more dark and gloomy the album gets but all the more interesting. but I thinks that’s what it’s here for.

so interesting to see your dad react to this, this is one of the most iconic albuns of all time. and its such a unique album. there is nothing like it out there. its a lounge of intellectual and playful rhymes coated in an infinity of samples that all blend together to paint a picture. its a concept album about the bigigest villain to ever live. This one of those albuns that no matter where music goes or civilization, this is intemporal to the core. Everytime u listen u find a new meaning and a new story inside a new line. Its just so rewarding to replay it over and over again. This is pure rap at its best.
Shadows of tomorrow (& Madlib in general) are heavily inspired by Sun Ra - legendary cosmic jazz artist & composer. On that note you guys should definitely check out Yesterdays New Quintet, it's basically peak Madlib playing every instrument in his own orchestra & syncing it to looped perfection.
My favorite album of all time. Timeless rhyming and production. Still sounds fresh to this day.

I think the "scary" impression of Madvilliany is just that's the parts that make it so great are the same things that can really turn off someone less deep into hip hop. Madlibs production is clever and weird. It can sometimes feel like barely controlled chaos but that's what makes it so interesting. DOOMs flow and wordplay are unmatched, but they can be too dense and hard to follow for someone with no experience with his style of internal rhymes and multilayered punchlines. There's a great vid by Vox on DOOM where they interview Open Mike Eagle. OME talks in that about how, despite being a DOOM fan, he still sometimes finds little double entendre or clever jokes in his lyrics and how DOOM is a master of imbedding so much into his bars that you are almost always finding something new. I think that while this album isn't as immediately challenging or off-putting as something like Death Grips, it is very easy for someone to just not "get" the appeal.
I honestly think Kevin might not need to really fear Death Grips as much as he thinks. Honestly think he might appreciate the abrasiveness and energy.
Before introducing Kevin to the chaos and nihilism that The Money Store is, I believe the best course of action is to introduce him to the downward spiral of Atrocity Exhibition first.
This is why I love these videos. I never really thought about listening to this album, I've tried listening to MF Doom a couple times, just not my thing I guess. Listened to Madvillainy all the way through before watching the video and I'm loving the whole vibe of the album. It's not going to be something I come back to a lot, but I'm glad I'm listening to new stuff to me and at least experiencing it. So thanks for doing what you do!

I dont think I've ever come back to a youtube series as much as this one, a good watch every time! I think RTJ2, Saturation by Brockhampton, and Tetsuo and Youth by Lupe would all be good listens at some point in the future that your dad would really vibe with

MF Doom’s lyrics on Madvillainy, needs about 10 listens to really understand it all, and even then his rhyme schemes, metaphors, and double entendres are hard to grasp. Every time I listen to this album, I catch something new.

I’m dead serious, this album has not a second worth of bad music. This thing is so good that I sit through the fucking interludes. Truly a transcendent masterpiece that is yet to be topped. Yes, it’s better than TPAB, fight me.
A great double album review I think a lot of people would love to see is Tha Carter 2&3. All time classics and especially Tha Carter 2 in my opinion. The way Wayne really experimented in tracks like Mo Fire, Lock and Load and Shooter really hit to me.

This album holds a special place to me and many other people around the community and I'm glad y'all got to making a video about this album. The production from Madlib and the insane lyricism and flows that DOOM has on this album is amazing. The influence this album also has on current music right now is evident and shows how much this album was ahead of it's time back in 2004. Such a great album, RIP MF DOOM.

Ive always looked at this album like a comic book and each song is like a page in the story. Each track isnt its own story but just long enough to move the comic along

This is probably my favourite Album of the Genre. Beats, Lyrics, Flow and Production... none of them carry the rest, they are all so solid. Timeless classic.

You and pop pop need to do a video on Marvin Gaye's "Whats Going On." Arguably the best album of all time. So many of the issues and topics Marvin talks about in that album are still prevalent today. Each song leads into the next. It was such an artistic culmination of music together to create an album.
That'd be cool but this series is more about the son introducing his dad to newer albums that he grew up listening to

Been waiting for this one. Your dad is definitely gonna need more than just 1 listen to fully appreciate this one, but glad you waited a bit to introduce it. While it is an amazing album and one of my favorites everything from the lyrics to the production is so intricate it would’ve been a weird one to start out with.

I've had the mask tattooed onto my wrist for 15 years. This album hit while I was in high school and was such a game changer.
Being that DOOM was older than most MCs, it’s cool for your dad to relates those interludes and skits to old radio shows like green hornet. My mind would’ve never made that connection because it wasn’t part of my experience growing up.
At first I refused to hear it. Then, I started to like it. Now I think it is a masterpiece. The style of this album is just impeccable
I was so excited for this one, and I enjoyed it so much. Would love to see a reaction of MM...FOOD, I think Kevin will enjoy it a lot now with Madvilliany as background and I personally think their track's are more catchy. Anyways, great video and RIP MF DOOM!
Mm..Food has always been my favorite DOOM album! Mouse and the Mask is up there too.
It’s fun to see someone experience this album for the first time. I think it would have helped your dad understand the album if you had explained the concept behind the album. Like, how the old radio samples are setting up the story about this supervillain and how the super villain is the one rapping through the album. Then, how Viktor Vaughn is a separate character rapping about the supervillain boning his chick, etc. I think it makes the album more fun knowing this, but it’s cool your dad enjoyed the music regardless
