Lucky you in US, as in Europe the LR3/Discovery 3 (LR4 and Discovery 4 as well)i are one of the most unreliable models ever made by JLR, because of VERY problematic 2,7 and 3,0L TDV6 engine (Ford/Peugeot engineering) , problems with rust and problems with air suspension (the last two are often linked together).
My 4.4 lr3 is at 280k miles with all original drivetrain and even original air suspension out back!!! Its my daily driver and still gets 15mpg around town. It really is a solid platform

@@98MAzdaMilleniaSNope, you’re thinking of the L322 Range Rover, from 2002-2005 they used 4.4L M62 units from BMW. The LR3 never had any BMW powertrains, only the 4.4L AJ V8 from Ford/Jaguar.
My LR3 has 220K miles and it's also still on the original drivetrain and air suspension.

I've had my 2012 LR4 for almost 8 years. I always say the people who you see talk about Land Rover's bad reliability the most -- particularly concerning the LR3 and newer -- are people who (a) have never owned a Land Rover and are only repeating "what they've heard," most likely from others who have never owned a Land Rover, or (b) bought a high mileage neglected one for a song and complain it actually needs some work. They are also often Toyota owners that for some reason feel the need to crap on all the other brands to justify the shortcomings of their own.
The question is why do we have many of the other brands on road while these are few?
@@boxoffisa Not sure what you mean. I see old LR3s and Range Rovers on the road all the time, particularly in comparison to their original sales numbers.
@@rl9810 same thing. I see older than new ones. Actually if I see same new ones for few months I may not see them again but the old ones are strong. Myself I want those old range rovers and land rovers.

My ‘06 LR3 has 313,000 miles on the original engine. Purchased it in Feb 2012 with 74K miles. It’s still going strong. It was the family daily but now it’s one of the family adventure rigs.
I've had my LR3 for almost three years now and I love it! The importance of that GAP IID tool cannot be overstated. If you replace an airstrut you will likely need to re-calibrate your suspension. If you replace your air compressor and get a different brand you will need to flash the firmware to the correct brand etc. There are a ton of easy fixes the GAP tool can help with, just buy one if you have an LR3.
Where can you typically get them
GAP tool will also recalibrate front diff settings and even override the tire pressure monitor system in addition to deep cleaning pesky codes on the fly. Pays for itself many times over.
I got a 2006 with the rear locker 2 years ago. My decision was heavily influenced by your videos. I decided to do a light restoration so it's been in my garage for a year and $4k in parts so far. Labor is paid by love
How you can know if has a rear locker? It comes with an specific versión or was optional?
@888JJEAM888 HD package was optional and has an electronic rear locker.
Few ways to check:
-There's an electronic box on top of the rear diff
-Full size spare
-Put it in 4L, rock mode, and get it on a soft surface and try to get it to spin. The off road display will show it lock the center and rear diff
-Get an IID Tool. You can activate the rear diff to test it if it's equipped

I have a 2007 LR3. It's my favorite vehicle. I have a Johnson rod lift and 33's on it. I had to modify the front frame rails a bit and trim the plastic fender wells. It's a beast off-road, and with the BFG KO2'S, it's unstoppable in the snow. Does it have electrical gremlins? Yes. But nothing that keeps me from daily driving it. I agree with everything Tommy stated in this video about LR3's. I highly recommend them. Most people that critique them have never owned one.
My cousin Deborah owns a 2005 LR3 with the V8. She bought it brand new in 12/04 valued at $67,000 I believe at the time. She still owns it and she still drives it. Currently it has 201,000 miles on it. She has 2 thick books of maintenance records totaling a whopping $82,000 over a span of 18 years.
Really? Average $4500/year in maintenance and repairs?? That’s insane

@@chrismichael1161 Air suspension went out 3 times. Head gaskets twice. Timing chain replacement twice. Rear main and front main like 3 times. Tires and brakes, oil changes and a transfer case replacement. Radio replacement and rear safari glass replacement. It is black and is on its first repaint, done at like 170k which is like 3 years old now. Hennessey Land Rover in Buckhead Atlanta did all services and repairs until 120,000 miles. Then she started taking it to Bear Valley (Land Rover specialist shop) in Alpharetta. She is my older cousin. She is a retired district attorney. She loves Rovers. She owns a 2022 Range Rover now but she like the LR3 better and ride in it more.

I've been in love with land rovers since your first Discovery 2 video, then came the LR3 and I decide to go after one. Manage to find one in great shape and after 2 years of happily owning one, I now got a Disco2 TD5. Maintaining 2 old rovers is not a cheap task here in Brazil and they do require a lot of more maintenance then your regular toyota but I really enjoy doing the maintenance myself and learning with the community - Great video once again
I owned a 2011 LR 4 HSE brand new…… just sold it in 2022 with 120,000mile. Spent a ton of money keeping it alive. I bought a 2022 4Runner Limited because I was tired of repairing the LR4. It was outstanding in snow.
I am a huge TFL fan and follower. Love what you guys do. I recently watched your buyers guide and decided to buy a used LR4. I leased at 2007 LR3 and loved it but switched to a 2010 Jaguar XF when the lease expired. I still have the XF with just under 190000 miles. In October I went ahead after watching your video and bought a near mint condition 2012 LR4 HSE Lux with only 92000 miles for $14k. Love it! keep up the good work.

I have owned my 2008 lr3 for over 2 years now and it has been a blast. I’ve put over 50xxx miles on it and have towed, off roared and daily driven it. It takes everything I throw at it. I’m currently on a journey to run 35’s on it and can’t wait to see it happen.

I almost bought one of these when I lived in Santa Fe, NM in 2020-2021. There's a great little LR/RR shop there and he refurbs and sells them. Interesting owner, but he did know his stuff on the LR/RR platforms. One thing you didn't talk about was crashworthiness. At the Santa Fe shop there was a rolled LR3 (kids, dirt road, ran out of talent) and it was 100% structurally intact and everyone walked away from the accident.
Those are some really nice clean LR3's. Would be cool to see it vs a new Defender 110 or 90.

I have watched your first video on the land Rover (2006-2009) and decided that it would be a good vehicle to bring the family and some 4 wheeler up north to my daughter's family's land and go riding.
I watched this 3 months update on how it's been going.
I still think that it would be a good fit for what I have in mind.

Good stuff Tommy and thank you! Because of your original LR3 content I recently bought a 2005 HSE and I'm absolutely in love with it. Mine has the coil spring conversion which is part of what made me comfortable buying it and it still rides great.

As a Land Rover Tech with 15 years experience, I can’t say Rovers are without fault. In fact it’s job security. However, I would get another LR3 and drive it anywhere without thinking twice. I personally know people that bought an LR3 with 200k miles and are still driving it 7 years later with only minor issues and regular maintenance.
What would you say is the best year LR3 to buy?
I had a 2006 LR3 with the 4.4 and 160,000 miles and it was pretty solid. It still had the original air suspension. The engine and transmission were great too. Just a few electrical gremlins brought the reliability down.
I got LR4 a few years ago. Serviced air suspension compressor (a DIY job), changed the trunk electric lock, and replaced lower control arm bushings.
After seeing the videos on your very first LR3 a few years ago, I decided to buy a 2008 with 85K miles and well maintained. 2 years later, you were absolutely right! One of the best purchases I've made! Looks, style, and yes, reliability! Go anywhere, do anything, in comfort with class. Thanks again! Your advice was spot on!
Bought my 08 LR3 with rear locker last year after watching your videos and doing research into what the best off roader was for me on a limited budget. She had 240,000 miles and extensive service history. She is an amazing truck. Did Yankee Hill and Kingston Peak without skipping a beat. Even my wife, (not into off roading) loved the LR3. I use that truck for going snowboarding, off roading, hauling dogs around town, everything.
I didn’t have any major failures under my ownership and have since sold it off to upgrade to a 4xE but I have to say there are lots of things the LR3 did better and for literally 5% of the price of the 4xE.
I do have to say I was constantly prepared for something to go horrendously wrong. But I love seeing them out in the wild and will forever feel fondly about the LR3.
Hilarious to see people pissy and grumpy about a car brand? If you don’t like it, no one is forcing you to engage.
The LR3 is probably the best overland platform ever made. The LR4 adds more luxury elements and has the bigger jaguar 5.0 V8 which has timing chain issues where the cost of labor is what breaks the bank.
If you do your own work you can reasonably own one of the best 4x4 trucks ever made. Get a GAP tool to cover your electronic issues and worries. If your air suspension system fails you can replace it with a traditional coil over setup but you lose some factory capabilities. That being said, there are plenty of high mileage trucks running around on their original air setup.
If anyone is shopping around for an LR3/4 and wants to use it for wheeling, finding one with the factory HD Package option is worth its weight in gold. Full size spare tire + rear locker. I would advise against the later model year LR4s that switched to the sc v6 over the 5.0 v8. The LR3 4.4 V8 is going to be the best workhorse

There's no way it's the best overlander. An overlander needs to be extremely tough and reliable to take that gong. They are great off road, but off-roading and overlanding are very different.
@@ln5747 you will not have the same level of power, luxury, off-road capability, and on-road manners with another vehicle as you will with a V8 LR3/LR4. These things combined make it an overlanding platform. Will you see one of these kitted out and crossing multiple continents in a single expedition type trip? Probably not. But plenty of people around the world are using these for overlanding purposes. Give us your definition of “overlanding” and we might be able to have a conversation

I love the LR3, I've had one for about 4 years and 50k miles. It does keep the wrenches warm, but I've never needed to be flat-bedded or towed off the trail or anything like that. I think it's the best compromise of good on road driving and handling characteristics combined with really great off road capability. It's no rock crawling trail buggy but getting through gnarly trails is a breeze. Great articulation, good clearance with the height adjust. Plus it tows pretty well. I just towed a full size car on a flatbed trailer without issue from Colorado to Wisconsin. Its a great do-all vehicle, if you don't mind a little wrenching here and there. Some of us even enjoy it.

They’re expensive here in US too 😂 buying this over a Toyota or a Nissan (Nissans are mostly quality in US market whereas Mitsubishi fills that role in the global market and they doesn’t in US) it would just make very little sense unless the land rover was such a cheap deal and owned by a old woman and you have actually ASE certified mechanical know how.

I have a handful of LR vehicles. My 08 Lr3 Hse is hands down my favorite. 15 years of ownership, 112k mi on the clock, nothing but regular maintenance, and a pair of control arms so far. Still in excellent condition and rides on that pillow air suspension that I love.

Great video! My LR 3 is a 2006 V8 SE with the HD package and cold weather package. Bought it new in 2007 and it now has 241,000 miles on it. Only problem was the water leak from under the cowl panel and another leak from sunroof drain tubes (known issues). I fixed them both with help from UA-cam. Great vehicle both on road and off road!
Love my LR 3 Td 6 HSE Van, near 180 thousand still going strong in every occasion. One have to know to fix at least the basics on a car to avoid costly services at a garage. The maintenance book is a must you can set the clock after the advisable maintenance intervals.
Center bearing failure on the rear drive shaft is super common too. The bearing itself doesn't fail but the rubber dry rots over time and the makes the driveshaft clunk and flop around in the carrier bearing housing. I just replaced mine last week. EDIT: And like others in the comments my LR3 purchase was also heavily influenced by your videos with your original LR3.
Just for those reading this, it can be fixed for ~$15 with some sikaflex and about an hour of your time
'09 HSE with the HD package since 2015. Other than typical maintence items I have had to replace the EPB module, Front struts, Rear brake lines, and sunroof motor. I love this car- just have to be proactive on upkeep.
One with the optional rear locking diff is an excellent find. These have brilliant towing capacity, great offroad despite their size.

One surprising thing about these, assuming that they are sorted when you start your project, is that they're actually cheaper to build than Toyotas. You can get a proper lift kit for one of these for the price you would pay just for a set of JBA upper control arms for the same lift height on a 4Runner. If your air struts go out, they're cheaper to replace than a set of good lower-end Toyota shocks, and a full front winch bumper is only a little over 1k.
Great video, but you did not mention the option for the mini cooler in the center console. Man it comes in handy. Keep up the great work though.

Thank you Tommy, good review, great discussion. Not a fan of Land Rover, expense, and quality, but I've driven versions of the original (pre-2000) Defender and loved it.
I find it interesting that it weighs so much. My lifted F-150 FX-4 on 35's with a winch and a camper system with all my stuff in it weighs about the same as these did new.
This is a great video. A couple notes...there is nothing wrong with the 2005. There are issues like the diffs (internal coating) that the factory later sorted but any 2005s out there now likely had those replaced already.
I agree the non-HD variant can do almost everything the HD LR3 can do....but I am not sure if its 99.999%. it might be closer to 89% and even then it does so with more traction control and grunting. I have two LR3s. One is HD and the other isn't. They are both great but they are not the same.
PS if anyone wants to really learn about the LR3, a couple in Germany completely restored theirs (diesel) excellent series. @lrtime.
Great commentary as always! I love the D3 and think it will work for us here in KwaZulu Natal. We have recently relocated to a Nature Reserve inthe KZN bush. My wife's little Atos doesn't cut it anymore on these Bush roads with slippery surfaces and heavily rotted and potholes roadways. I believe either a Subaru Outback or LR3 will work best. I personally own a Mahindra Pikup 4x4 Karoo special which laughs at these roads. Would a Mahindra Scorpio compared to a Lr3 be an idea considering price and competency? I'm a fan of both btw.
Sooo. I have a '02 D2 TD5 with 230k km. I also daily drive a '06 D3 TDV6 SE - with 425k km. Parts are starting to wear out now so will do a complete rebuild when I get to 500k km. Vera and Christian from LRTime have inspired me.

Love mine. 7 seats. Fantastic in the snow. Only complaint is no heated steering wheel.. otherwise has all the bells and whistle. Mines a v8... $140 cnd to fill up.. get about 525 km in a full tank

It is basically a facelifted LR3 with a more powerful, but less reliable engine, unless you are willing to update, or pay a shop to update the cam chain tentioners.
There is a MUCH better rear recovery point under the hitch wiring plastic access panel. two quarter twist fasteners to open it. The towing hitch is not rated for recovery and would make a massive projectile when connected to a snatch strap.! Otherwise GREAT video Tommy. Keep loving on the LR3. I had one for 12 years and it wasnt long enough.
When I worked at Benz I replaced air compressors all the time there were a batch of bad ones. Air struts too, but there very easily to replace.

I love these things. I never owned one, but I've been looking into the more over the last year. I drive a 4Runner and it's kind of boring, considering replacing it with one of these and having plenty of cash left over to build it. I know a few guys that are "in the know" when it comes to offroading and overlanding, and this is the platform that they choose to build. Finding one of these is no different than buying a similar vintage Toyota, you have to find one in good shape with all the maintenance done or budget for your own repairs. I have a friend who just bought an '06 V8 4Runner, he's going to be about 3,500 bucks into maintenance by the time he's done just baselining it.
The heated windshield is offered at safelight for $400 also they replaced my a pillar trim for free I had one side missing
Sold my 2009 Disco 3 at 398,000 km. Motor was like new. Perfect car, imperfectly perfect. Best car I've ever owned.
My LR3 with 356‘000 Kilometers still runs on it first Airstruts from 11/2004! And the car still runs like a new car, also with its original engine, which consumes not one drop of Oil between the Oilchanges!

If you're going to own a Land Rover, it's gotta have the 4.4L Jag and ZF6 combo. Just keep up on your fluid changes and it'll run forever. My LR3 I sold with 150k on the clock and only touched the engine for oil changes and to replace the coolant bleeder above the throttle body. Another good choice is the 06-09 full Range Rovers, they also have the 4.4/ZF6 combo and insanely easier control arms to replace (literally a 30 minute job in the driveway and dont have to take the wheels off if lifted)
What I like about this review is that as much time and detail is put into an older vehicle as would be one right off the lot-only the difference is it’s in a price range where people can pay cash and own the vehicle outright.
But perhaps the greatest part about these reviews is that they feature vehicles that are time-tested. The question is: “How is it holding up after 150k miles?” rather than “How many recalls will this have after Brand X has allowed me to be its guinea pig for its newest model?”

Bought a RTT from a guy that had 2 LR3's and a Range Rover. he said he bought them new back in the day, he said as long as you buy the right model year they can be good cars.

It had engine issues 5.0, lr4
LR4s look cool and the interior is nice, however, I found that there's only one year that is desirable to get, a 2013. Pre 2013 had timing chain issues, which were fixed for 2013, and then in 2014 they went to a twin turbo V6 and made the two-speed transfer case optional.

The LR4 was the last real off-roader Land Rover sold in the US. Everything after that is unibody construction so they aren’t even made to be off-roaders anymore.

By the way this Silvwr one in your video what are the size from those tires ? I wish to chance for something like this but keep the my R19
Wonder how similar the air bag system in the LR3 is to the rear only air bags you typically see in American luxury barges. My 06 Yukon Denali has rear air bags, and you could change out both rear shocks and the air compressor for around $400 in parts last time I checked. More expensive than leaf springs or coil struts, sure, but less than half the cost of a single strut on some of the European air suspension systems.
I own a 2007 LR3 with 160K miles for 3 years. The drivetrain is glorious. Silky smooth and plenty of power. You will have issues with the air suspension. I have had to chase down my fair share of leaks and had to swamp out multiple parts. I do my own work, but parts still a bit pricy. Still love the truck and would recommend.

What size tires are you running with the KO2's?
Absolutely LOVED my Discovery II, LR3, and LR4. Wonderful vehicles and all were very reliable with hardly an issue.
The LR3/LR4 are superb. I've got a 2010 LR4 5.0 with 240,000kms as my daily. I can't imagine replacing it. I absolutely love it. It's been completely reliable other than the air compressor failing, but no biggie. If the engine goes, I'll have it repaired/replaced. I don't want a new one with worse visibility and annoying touch pad controls, etc. Not to mention the blingy ostentatious image. One day the LR4 will have to retire, but it will be a classic. A lifer Land Rover technician I know raves about the LR4 and says they are starting to appreciate in value.
What size BFG are those on the SE and did you need to lift it? Thanks!
I own a lr3 v8 silver land rover exactly like the 1 shown in the video. 151k miles and still with original air suspension.
You did not mention anything about the low oil pressure, that causes most often engine problems that are far from cheap or easy to fix.
Transmissions are easily serviceable. There’s a company called Atlantic British that sell a service kit you can do in your driveway.
I rem. a few years ago TFL purchased a brand new Discovery model for about $52k
and it had nothing but trouble.
So much that the Dealer exchanged it for a new one.

@@davidpowley7209yep and the dealer cut through the loom when they installed a which which didn’t help, that and Covid era logistics issues on parts.
So how many miles on one of these is too many miles? I’ve seen some around with 120-140k miles, but they were in the $12k range. There were a couple in the $8k range, but they had 220-250k miles on them.

I own an 09, LR3. Only issue I have had was I lost one front strut. The balance has been your standard maintenance (belts, oil, etc). The myth of unreliability is the internet only
I've had a 2006 Ranger Rover Sport L320 for years (basically the same as the LR3) and it has been awesome. Perfect? No, but neither has my Tundra.
This most compares to a Land Cruiser they’re typically 1/2 to 1/3 of the price that difference in price can buy a good amount of repair parts. Everyone acts like Toyotas are substantially more reliable I can tell you on my first gen sequoia it is reliable however as a former lr3 owner it was as nearly as reliable and I’ve actually put more money in the sequoia. 1st gen Sequoias require timing belts every 100k typically a $1500 job lower ball joints every 100k $400 job along with tons of other nitpicky things the same money in a lr3 every 100k would keep it reliable.
Toyotas literally are substantially more reliable. That's not opinion. You won't find a single review from any reputable car reviewer stating Land Rover as more reliable than Toyota. Just facts fella.
I had a P38 Range Rover 2002 - so many more $$ repairs by 110k than my 2011 Land Cruiser at 195k - by same age, same driver, majority miles on road some sand and snow no rock crawling for either. And I’m not afraid to push any button in the 12 year old LC. Love the LR/RR style…..hate the Lexus bling…..GX550 or LR/RR next yet the reliability and value cliff hold me back and I owned both.
