The previous owner of our 2005 LR3 said it cost him over $1000 to have a Pioneer head unit and steering wheel controls installed. The upper screen did not work, but that was also because he did the coil over shocks conversion.
I bought a wireless back up camera with a 7" screen, which fits almost perfectly in the frame around the upper monitor. It's secured with some industrial strength velcro. One thing I noticed is that your stereo surround is one piece. Mine is two pieces, split in the middle of the shelf in front of the upper monitor.
Did this to my LR3 back in the day. Wish I had done it the first day I bought it!! If you’re reading this go for it!!!!!

Hi Mike, thank you so much for your excellent videos. So meticulous and thorough. We have a 2008 RR Sport that we added an Alpine screen/head unit to. Had it professionally done at Mobile West car audio in Portland, OR. The install cost us $750. The 4x4 screen still works, but the old gps navigation does not (who cares now that there's CarPlay). Obviously Mobile West knows how to keep the 4x4 screen working. May be worth a call. Thanks again for your great content. Because of your videos, I plan to take over some of the maintenance for our Rover.

Great job! It looks really nice. My 2006 is an SE but it was nicely optioned including the rear locking differential. But it did not include the nav screen which also displays the 4x4 info where I have a cubby storage instead. I installed a 7” wired/wireless CarPlay unit that fit nearly perfectly. I wired power, rear camera, and an aux cable that I ran under the center console to the rear aux input. So my unit acts like a receiver and the stock radio is the amplifier with steering wheel volume retained. I can’t change songs with steering wheel but I can use Siri, the phone, or the CarPlay unit. I have a front camera that I haven’t gotten around to install yet. In retrospect, I wish I had installed the rear view camera to an ignition-switched power source instead of the reverse lights. It would be nice when the LR3 is fully loaded to use it instead of the rear view mirror. I may switch it
I will definitely be hooking both front and rear cameras to ignition power so they can be called up at any time.

After a bit of research, you can get adapters to solve this problem but it's not cheap.
If you have the Logic 7 stereo, you need a FK-853-6 fitting kit, Amplifier fitting kit AK-LR-01, NAVAMP interface 10-651 and for reversing camera a Fakra to male DIN 21-123.
You then remove the original stereo, take it a part, getting rid of the bulk, then plug in the new cables, hide the remains of the original head unit in the dash and fit your new head unit.
That's the short version but it leaves you with working 4x4 screen, navigation, all speakers and steering wheel controls.

I believe you can retain the off road display by separating the stock head unit. Most of the unit is taken up by the faceplate and the CD changer. You can separate the guts of it and connect that to retain the 4x4 display information. There is information online of others who have done it. I separated a non working radio and it's not too bad but it was just to see how it went apart and not to install.

I can't justify over $1000 to buy both the Alpine and the Scorche kits so I'm stuck with the stock items for the time being.
I paid $629 on Amazon for the Alpine Deck, backup camera, and Scosche kit. Where are you pricing them for $1000?

Hi mate, there are folks that have used an MB Quart NPW-254 subwoofer in the factory tailgate location with an AudioControl 300.1 amplifier. This would be a killer video as no one has yet video detailed the install.

Hi, another great video , wish to also update my radio , mines a base model so doesn’t have the satnav screen like your good self , wish to either get a 7” screen for the top of the dashboard to work as a satnav , ie waze or Tom Tom, or a double din satnav / radio with a cd player, am old school and still like my cd’s , lol , thks again and always look forward to ur excellent videos , all the best , Gary

the old headunit is the brainchild for canbus data to show on the top display. i believe people leave the old headunit connected somehow while the new one is strictly wired for audio.
Yikes!! That’s a big deck to try and hide somewhere under the dash.
@@wafflesquare I read a post somewhere that there is a specific module within the stock headunit that may be able to be left in place instead of needing to hide the entire head unit. Someone said the guys on the UK forums had figured it out, but I have yet to discover that post/information anywhere.
Actually you split the head unit and the MOST interface is what you hide behind the climate controls. There is a company in UK that makes the screen retaining kits, InCarTec.

Hi Mike, I've been meaning to ask - aside from youtube videos posted by others, how do you research your Rover repairs. It's obvious (admirable - enviable) that by the time you start filming you have become VERY well educated about what to do. I do much the same with various DIY and repair projects, but I'm a relative novice at Rover and auto repairs. Now that we have two Rovers - 2008 and 2009 Sports - I am determined to do whatever repairs are within my ability (several of which you have covered brilliantly). So any resources you would be willing to share? Thanks again for your excellent videos. All the best.
I always read the owner’s manual which is a surprisingly good resource. I also go online and find a shop/repair manual and review the section pertaining to the issue I’m addressing.
Great Video tutorial as always. Question. My kids like to listen to their music in the third row via the Headphone jack. Can they select an audio source independent of the driver? Example: Driver is Playing radio Passenger is listening to Aux.
Great question. I don’t know. We do not have second or third row headphone jacks to my knowledge.

Great video, thanks! The only thing that is stopping me from doing this is the head unit trim piece doesn't match the grayish trim on the entire front instead its black and looks "Aftermarket". Any way around this ? Does anyone make a matching color
The aftermarket trim pieces could easily be spray painted with a color closer to the original.

So with this installation do only the front speakers work (since you're connecting the front RCA outputs to the MOST and stock amp)?
All speakers work including the subwoofer. The amplifier distributes the one L/R signal throughout the speakers. In the “sound” menu of the Alpine deck you can control the balance (left/right) but not the fade (front/back).
@@wafflesquare That's good to know, I guess the amp has some logic built in that if no rear signal is received to use front signal on all speakers.
Why don’t you use the original microphone from LR (assuming you had the bluetooth option) The mic works well and it is already in the center of head liner. Maybe you should check if it is there.
There is not a microphone jack on the back of the original deck on our vehicle.

to get the top display working you need to reinstall the original headunit. and connect. just need to power it up. unfortunately the brains of that display is inside the headunit. could mount in the glovebox etc

This would be a cool project to see. Losing the 4x4 screen is the thing keeping me from an aftermarket head unit. But this video is impressive enough that I’m even rethinking that.

This is another and quicker and probably cheaper way to get car play but it's not integrated but means it is portable between vehicles though 😱
