Keep things rusty, except your tools!
Been a really long time since I drove a twin stick but it's not hard to learn. Your main box is a 5-speed and the secondary is a 4-speed (Low, Low Split, High Split, Direct). Start with the secondary in Low and the primary in 2nd.(1st is only for slogging through mud or pulling a heavy load) Shift 2-3-4-5. Shift the secondary first to Low-Split. Then the primary, 1-2-3-4 (NO 5th). Shift the secondary to High-Split then the primary 1-2-3-4-5. Shift the secondary to Direct, then primary 1-2-3-4 (NO 5th) It might take few times to master making the shifts fast enough but I'm sure you'll figure it out.
My friend, you were a real truck driver, a true operator when it required skill. Now every moron can feel confident enough to drive thanks to automatics.

It's nice man. I'd refix the flatbed on it again to. So your able to hual stuff on it.&'&'with it to for sure no doubt about it either. That smoking I'd just add in some STP bars stop leak additives into the motor oil. After changing it all out. Along with the oil filter to.

The V304/345/392 family was the primary engine of the Loadstar between 1962 and 1973. They are 304, 345, and 392 cubic inches (5.0, 5.7, and 6.4 l) overhead valve gasoline V8s. They developed 193, 197, and 236 horsepower (144, 147, and 176 kW) respectively. CNG V345s were also available. In 1962 the V304 was standard on the 1600 and 1700 while the V345 was standard on the 1800. On most models the next larger engine was optional. In 1974 the V345 became standard on the 1600.
Cool old rig. I use to live right next to the front gate where this truck was made in Springfield, Ohio. It was made the same year I was born. There's two IH factories there now, the newer one is about a mile long. At one end there's new frames and motors in crates, on the other end compete assembled trucks drive out. I've walked the whole thing and once painted all the colored safety stripes on the floor in the whole building. Always liked the old IH trucks. Had an old IH dump truck when I lived there from the 1950s I used for construction.

My favorite day of school was when the regular bus was being worked on or serviced or whatever, (normally they were a 72-78 loadstar) and they pulled up in one of the old buses, had the face only a mother could love just like this truck. The exhaust smelled, they were stick shift, once big long seat across the back, and they've always been my favorite since Kindergarten in 1989. Pretty sure those school buses ran on propane or something cause they smelled exactly the the forklift at work.

68 was first year for the 392, plus all 392's in 1800 series had Holley 4bbl. Most likely a 345. Auxiliary trans was installed at factory

I use to haul rice and soybeans from the field to grain bin with one very similar. It was white and was mint condition. It didn’t have 15,000 miles on it. It had been on the same small farm since it was new. Our farthest field was 6 miles from the bin.

My grandpa had a loadstar 1800 grain truck. Always wanted one since they sold it to a paintball course. The ones I have found are either destroyed or way to expensive. I'm glad you got save one.

One of the classic trucks from my youth. Loadstars used to be everywhere, rare to see one on the road these days. Nice save!

I had a '69 1700 Loadstar, 345 gas, 5/2 with air and a rear mounted 28' National crane. A former highway department sign truck. I re-mounted the crane behind the cab and used it in my handcrafted log home business. Bought it in '88 or '89. It was old and tired and the frame was rusted and cracked. I eventually replaced it with a '92 International 4900 with a 466 diesel cab and chassis. Re-mounted the crane on it and bought a 12' bed off a duece and half and added a dump cylinder under it. Built a 12' pln on jib. 40 foot of stick. Set a lot of trusses with it. Sold the 1700 for $300 to a junk hauler. Kinda wish I had it back! I enjoy your videos.

Nice! I’ve got a ‘66 Loadstar 1700 with the 392, trying to buy a non-running 1600 from a neighbor’s field for parts. Got a ‘66 1200A pickup as well, with the little 304. Cool truck, glad you’re keeping another one of these old work horses on the road!

That auxiliary trans was factory, 3 or 4 spd. Those welds in the frame appear to be from a frame stretch.good walking beam rear suspension, not the smoothest ride but great in off highway applications. Had a 63 5 ton long ago, 345 5 spd with 2 spd rear end. Great old trucks.

I think you should add a sleeper or your generator to the back and in install 5th wheel so you can use a flatbed trailer to haul your

There are those russian made big ass V8 trucks. I drove those craptastic pieces of junk when I served in the Finnish army. Nice deep rumble when idling, but when driving it screamed like stuck pig.

In 1963 the std engine in an 1800 was a 345, a 392 was an option. All 392's had 4Bbl carbs...
You have a Holley 2300 carb with a governor.
I think it is stamped by the fuel pump mount for the block with the engine size for ihv8 motors.
Nice truck, I remember seeing these in regular use back in the late 90’s when I was a kid in rural Pennsylvania, not so much anymore. Wonder if the Holley carb was original
I used to drive one of those with a Utility box/boom truck back in 1990. They are a little tricky to start in Wisconsin Cold weather, but they run great,unless you have a Real heavy load going UP-hill. you will have to do a LOT of Down-shifting!
Definitely a nice addition to the fleet. When it comes to bleeding lines, I've had good results using a cheap one-way bleeder valve on brakes....not sure if it would do the same on a hydraulic clutch, it's been a while since I've owned a vehicle with that.
Make one hell of a tow truck to move the military trucks.

You could mount a rollback on this one to haul the DOA treasures home. It would need a pto ,pump and oil tank added but you are very capable of that.AL B.

Check the numbers on thr side of that brownie. Chances are its a progressive 3 speed. Under-direct-over drive

Drove one for a water company cant remember the year it was i was on a pipeline crew layed 2000 feet of pipe a day the truck was nicknamed the 20 had a 20 foot bed on it for the sticks of pipe
there is a flat peice of casting infront of the starter near the front of the engine thst has the engine size stamped into it

Just guessing as most the 345's had the four barrel an the 392 was for some reason a two barrel. I know a two barrel has larger jets in it than the primary in a four barrel.... just guessing around. The four speed brownie is a nice touch since its a twin stick, an gas engines seldom were set with the ten speed or other common for their configurations. Slow but steady .. only used the first gear in the brownie loaded coming out of a landing or something where creeping out was order of day. One other was the high hole in the brownie would some of them be a long split making it kinda worthless for just shifting between gears, found just moving up through gears and going from second to third in the brownie was the order worked best. Brownie is funny as its gearing pattern is normal first and down to second but third was when lever shifted to the side like a four speed in a pickup, third was in the "fourth gear position and fourth was in the third if you compared it to a pickup's shift pattern. They are fun but not so practical for the highway driving. Pretty sure it will have power steering

Pretty sure that the 392 V8 was a 4 barrel carb. Being 2 barrel, it's most likely a 345 V8

Mat be buying a 506 wrecker and wondering if it could be a reasonable local vehicle to use (10 miles a day) Always wanted one but not sure how crazy it is to daily drive. Seems pretty simple once it is sorted out.
Watch your videos and they make me want a big old truck because modern trucks seem like a foolish idea.
They’re slow, but a work horse. Long as you’re not in a city, it’s surely practical. Saw your other comment. Parts can be found, there’s a few sources online. It’s all about having a network of people with these kind of rigs. If you have Facebook, I highly suggest joining the G506 group, it’s very helpful. Long as you can get a title and registration for it, I’d definitely rock one!
I am in a city but thats the charm in it. I only am 5 blocks from work and most of my errands can be done on roads under 50 mph. I have a feeling diesel is going to get REALLY expensive soon which will raise the value of most trucks that can actually do work. I have a 67 vw bus and honestly I woild love to have a real truck for once in my life not a toy truck that costs $80,000😂🤣Thanks for responding . My toss up is between a 506 and a dodge like you have. Both slow.
i need some insight on how to rig a temp tank on this truck to try and get it running ive got a line from the tank to manual fuel pump on block from there to a hardline to inline fuel filter to hard line to carb. which hoses need to go where? not sure what supply v return. Thanks
