    Great truck, I drove one for years. You have under drive, direct and overdrive on the auxiliary transmission. If you split between direct and overdrive it allows you to go up or down 1/2 a gear let’s say. Under a load climbing a hill this would help. So let’s say third direct, split to over, shift to 4th as you split back to direct, then 4th over. Works with most any gear. Double clutch helps, no synchro. Gears. The 5x3 transmission, that’s what I call it, in a load star was the first truck I started with. You will get the hang of it with practice. Reach through the steering wheel and shift both sticks at the same time once ya get the hang of it. You have lots of empty road to get use to shifting. I was 17 in NJ practicing on the crowded roads in a dump truck. Thanks, you brought back some great memories.

      With no power steering you only had arm steering. As long it wasn’t loaded in the front of the bed you could turn the steering wheel easily. If it was loaded in the front oh Boy was it a pain to turn to turn from a stand still. Great memories driving the truck.

    I can't believe I lived in Alaska, drug junk out of the willows, and have missed you channel all these years. If you've not met him, there's a guy down in the Valley with a ton of old IH trucks. Hit me up if you're looking for contacts and I'll get you his info. He helped me some when I pulled my Scout 800 out of Bethel to drive it cross country to Virginia. He only had a couple Scouts but I'd bet he had 40 trucks or more and they're all for sale he said. Great videos, I know what I'll be doing all afternoon. 👍

    I've seen enough of your driving here to know I'd be absolutely comfortable with you driving my trucks. What a great old ride! My stepdad was a potato farmer. He had 7 Loadstar tandem spud trucks, all with 4-speed auxiliaries. The first gear (deep under) was half the speed of the second speed, so the truck would go slow enough and have enough torque multiplication to get loaded along side a potato harvester even if the ground was soft. They burned a lot of gas but I learned a lot!

    Since it has air brakes, there should be a valve on the dash that bleeds off the air and locks the brakes. Then you push it in to release the brakes so you can drive. There should also be a light and buzzer when the air drops below the level the system should maintain. Typically about 65 psi. Nice work and great truck! I am envious!

    • @kentkirkpatrick7953
      @kentkirkpatrick7953 Рік тому +2

      I don't think that style park brake was invented till late 60s. This would probably have drums or a drive line park brake.

    • @gs1100ed
      @gs1100ed Рік тому

      @@kentkirkpatrick7953 You may be right, but they are definitely air brakes which means there is a compressor that has a regulator and an air tank. Air brakes activate when there is a loss of air in the system, either by stepping on the brakes or pulling out the valve control on the dash. You can’t move the vehicle until sufficient air pressure has been established that will release the brakes when you push in the valve. I drove 18 wheelers for 20+ years so I know a bit about air brakes.

    • @kentkirkpatrick7953
      @kentkirkpatrick7953 Рік тому +2

      You are correct for newer trucks. This truck dose not have that. This truck only has survive brakes. Wasn't until 67-68 that stuff was invented.

    Your doing great figuring out shifting those old gearbox's, there should be metal tags on the sides of the cases telling make and model. The auxiliary trans came in a few different gear ratios and non had synchronizers. I haven't seen those differentials since the 70's, real blast from the past.
