I’m from Nepal and Own a 1993 LJ79 3L (2.8 liter non turbo) diesel engine. 270k KM in speedometer. Still going strong. Engine has not been opened yet. I don’t know how it performs in dessert or beaches as we don’t have any but it takes me anywhere in our Himalayan trails. The only concern is little bit of black smoke on quick acceleration and hungry on engine oil (every refueling requires a liter of oil). And vibration felt on the body and interior noise. Every time I take it for servicing my mechanic is eager to overhaul the engine. Great vehicle. Just love the 70 series. 30 years and still strong and reliable.

There is a full walk around and interior of the new Prado (Land Cruiser in USA) on one of the American channels. They appear to have made it more off-road worthy and have kept many features from the last 30 years that people don't want to see removed so its sort of retro-modern as others have said. Its also body on frame with rear locker on all models and looks easy to fit larger wheels. They haven't overdone the electronics either so it has lots of manual buttons.

“Seats looks the same, which is sad” [70 series] - you just had a go at Ineos for putting in Recaros, saying you wanted the most basic seats to keep the price lower!
The Prado answers nearly all the criticisms you have of both the Grenadier and the new Defender. Lower price and Toyota reliability. This Land Cruiser could well poach a lot of sales from the Grenadier, for those who want the proven Toyota reliability with fresh looks.

    • @4xoverland

      @andrewhurstcars Рік тому +2

@@4xoverland fair. I think your next video should be along the lines of ‘Is the Land Cruiser Prado the Grenadier/Defender we should be buying?’ - it addresses virtually all the concerns & criticisms you have made about both vehicles in your previous videos; Toyota reliability, solid rear axle, & lower price than either of the other two. The 70 series is only sold in very few markets, whereas the new Prado will be a very important worldwide vehicle that even includes USA and Europe, which the 300 & 70 don’t.

@@andrewhurstcars Europe is the most noteworthy as it has by far the most stringent emissions and fuel economy requirements, it was impossible for Toyota to sell the Lexus GX because of it's gas guzzler V8 but the Prado was always available with the diesel 4-cylinders. Frankly I think the T24A-FTS hybrid is a much better engine than the 1GD-FTV which has caused so many problems for Toyota and gets horrible fuel economy for a diesel so that the hybrid petrol can actually be viable, the only issue is power taxes in Europe, the hybrid petrol is too powerful for Europe, the diesel has 30% less power and will be taxed less

These Toyota truck 4x4 hybrids have over 300 hp but still consume substantially more than 10 l/100 km, it will be insane.A Corolla 2.0 Hybrid costs 750€ a year. A Prado 2.8 D-4D 6AT costs 2005€ per year. In Germany they have a tax calculated on similar factors but the results are substantially lower. In Germany the same Prado is 746€. fantastic news and very nice comments about it from you Andrew. Hopefully, and i mean praying to gods, the option for the 4 cylinder 2.8cc means, like the hilux, that toyota brings the 70's series for europe (we allready have a factory in Portugal :-) as you know) and the same for the prado. Used old prado's, Land cruiser kzj95 or the 120, still selling at some high price even if they have more than 400kms on the clock, easy over 20000€ is a common price for a 20 years. not having true 4x4 (solid axle) options made this mad situation. So arriving new options hopefully can give some hope to the ones that need or like a car that is more than a pretend to be 4x4 full of plastics.

@3:50 you can see that it will have an air to water intercooler. So there will be an heat exchanger (radiator) in front of the radiator for the engine coolant. (Like the ones for ac units)
I'm guessing this will be used for both engines. Or probably a front mount intercooler for the V8?
Anyways it will be better than a top mount intercooler. Don't get me wrong I like the looks of top mounts with their hoodscoops (my pajero also has one) but they are just mot as effective because there is a lot of heat build up.

Edit: As a mechanic I have to say I'm also annoyed by the amount of plastic covers in modern engine bays. But they are almost always easy to remove an not quite in the way. What actually makes modern engines difficult to work on is just the plain fact, that there is like double the amount of sensors and actors and probably 5 times the amount of wiring when compared to older, simpler engine desings.
On the other hand that's the stuff that makes modern engines so efficient and powerful

So I fervently hope that Toyota is going to sell the brand new 70 series in Europe too (now we just can privately import the 70 series , and just with the petrol V6 because of the emissions regulation ).

It's official! The Land Cruiser is coming back to the US in 2024 in the form of the Land Cruiser 1958 (base), Land Cruiser (upper range) and Land Cruiser Edition One (premium).
Toyota leaned heavily into the iconic LC aesthetic which caused a little sigh of relief over here. Rather than "reinvent" the LC, they updated its signature design elements like the scalloped D pillar, squared out vertical B and C pillars and rounded headlights.
As of right now, Toyota is saying mid $50K for the base model LC 1958. What will mid $50K get you? Here are some bullets:
      8 speed automatic
Turbocharged 2.4-Liter I4 Hybrid (no other option)
326 hp, 465 pounds of torque
Solid rear axel with independent front suspension
      STANDARD rear diff lock (!!)
      Front sway bar disconnect
      6000 lbs towing
      Trailer brake controller (!!)
With 8.7" ground clearance from the factory and 31 degree approach, 25 degree breakover and 22 degree departure angles, the aftermarket will be working double time to make these off-road ready. But the standard diff lock is major.
