In a world of crossovers and coupe SUVs it's a nice change to finally to see authentic cars launched, like the J250 and the GX 550, that are true to themselves and not trying to be something that they're not. Make authenticity, durability, and personality great again!

I got a 2011 Prado VX diesel. Been thinking about replacing with an X5 until I watched this video. I changed my mind. Going to keep it, because I just realized that I haven't explored it fully. Love that car!
Because the 2.8L is a tried & true engine being pretty much the same as the one inside the Hilux & the new 76 series Land Cruiser. The new 2.4L Turbo Petrol Hybrid (which is currently only sold in the North American market) is probably going to look similar to the Bronco (alongside being a more potent powerplant in terms of power)
Bruh I just googled Bronco's engine bay and wtf. I know some people don't like the all plastic cover engine bay look, but Ford didn't even try to tidy stuff up. Wth. Not even a branding.

HOW just HOW do you film this video with such cool looking picture profile, video quality and introduce that gloomy mood where the car is the star of the show and your only rescue out of that weather. Honestly top gear, your videos are done so professionally. If only Jeremy Clarkson was the one narrating this car it would be a dream
I drove my wife's boss 150 Prado out to Canteen Creek in the Northern Territory. While driving the black-top of the Stuart Highway I said, "I don't know what all the fuss is what the Prado". Then we left the highway and headed east to Canteen Creek. With every passing kilometre the revelation sank in. "Now I get it, this is a very good vehicle". Then last year my neighbour had to leave the country and sell his cars and one of them was a 120 Series Prado with 270,000kms on the odometer, so I bought it. Being the 120 GXL it also has 180 litre fuel capacity.
My wife really wants one of these. I agree with her that it’s very nice (especially the editions with the round DRLs, those are slick!) but it’s simply impractical since we don’t go off-roading and the MPG is so low. That being said… I am very glad this car exists, and I’d very much like to drive one someday.
We haven't priced it yet so no idea where they got 106k from? Was sat with the designer last week while he picked up his top gear award prices coming end of April but some of its features will he class leading which we can't share yet but it will he one mega vehicle aimed to take down land-rover😂
4:00 a description of the 1GD-FTV engine: "the message is clear here. I know it looks cool and desirable, but it's a workhorse underneath". Interestingly enough, in parts of Southeast Asia (i.e. Thailand and Indonesia, afaik), these engines are tuners' favorite. Us Indonesians love ladder-framed diesel-powered SUVs for a number of reason: 1. Decent fuel economy 2. Cheap(ish) running cost due to availability of cheap diesel fuel 3. Good tuning platform, at least from engine standpoint 4. Perceived prestige, since these vehicles are favored by high-ranking officials.
1kd is much better for tuning. more robust and less electronic to play. a favorite among offroad enthusiast. 1gd has potential to be a high tuneable engine but at a higher cost.
Wait u til you place proper tires on it and then you’ll see how virtually unstoppable it really is. I have an 80 Series with 309,000 miles on it and I just drive it from my house in Malibu to my other house in North Carolina without a worry. We will be driving back to California from Cale Hatteras, NC to LA off-road the entire way and filing it. 😅
Toyota might not use the Prado name for the new Land Cruiser 250 after all since the 250-Series looks more like the Land Cruiser J60 from the 1980s rather than older Prados which were Land Cruisers 90, 120, and 150.

Cannot wait for Australians 🇦🇺 to do their OTT mods to make this into a real off roader with lifted body in remote shocks, bull bar with side scrub bars and rock sliders on 35” MTT’s, engine tune with a real 3” exhaust
I love the LC My father got his in 1978 I eventually got mine in 1991 And have had one since, also had Hiluxes :-) The 2.8 diesel is original Hilux motor, Toyota loves it and we loved it, drive it all over Africa, Ghana to Dar es salaam, to Cape Town. It's the best deal in my view, never complains, never rushes either 😂
I heard a guy from Senegal say that they have an old saying there: If you want to go into the desert, get a Land Rover. If you want to come back, get a Toyota.
I've got the new US version with 4Cyl Hybrid. I gave up my Jeep GC Overland Diesel with 140k miles for it. I wish we had the 4cyl diesel in the states. It doesn't ride t all like a Grand Cherokee. it is more rugged and more satisfying. I love it. My wife doesn't. It's not refined enough for her.
Toyota with this Land Cruiser have done what I feel so many marques have failed to do these days, they've introduced a car that is a total improvement from the previous generation. A lot of new car releases at the moment seem to come with too many compromises. It's either too expensive, too "techy", too big, too ugly, or a combination of all four.
That’s because they milked the last generation for ten years too long. Don’t get me wrong, it was and is a good reliable vehicle but dynamically outclassed and oh so boring as well. This new one should leap two or three generations in one go.
dude u arguing with tiny brits? they have like 1/100 of Australian land and basically no proper offroad tracks like we do in Aus. they also get rain 24/7 so rusting for them is more possible. let'em drive their tiny little vw golfs and ford Fiastas and we can have the land cruisers. lol @@adriand1401
I’ve had land rovers and now I’m on Land Cruisers and for me nothing comes close to a LC for reliability and amazing looks this Land Cruiser is one beautiful motor. Will be a few years before I can trade in the LC Icon I have but this will be one I want to buy for my last vehicle and keep it for many years
Funny how there seem to be subtle differences in locking the diffs on the USA and EU models. In USA you get a button for rear locker and center locker and switch for H4 and L4. Yet in the EU version the switch has H4F (free?) H4L (center locked) and L4L (low, center locked), and only a button for rear locker and the other is empty, maybe for a front locker option? That would mean EU could get it triple locked from the factory which is awesome, but why the difference?
I've been looking at old FJ body-off restorations - love 'em, but. I won't say they were inferior to Jeeps in the USA, but, in my experience (late sixties through 70's) the right gear made all the difference in the right terrain. Body lifts, suspension lifts, and tire technology were beginning to evolve; 15" rims and 30 x 10.50 - 15's rapidly gained notoriety but could rub the springs/ frame across the board. Rust was an enemy and limited fuel capacity was an issue. When our president returns, all foolishness gets the boot in the USA and the Land Cruiser demonstrated here will flourish! I can wait.
I see it soo close to my LR Discovery 4. Same no no-nonense design, "tonka toy" style, capable on and off road. Well done, Toyota, this car could be my next!
What's your verdict on the new Land Cruiser?

Can’t they upload the video and then schedule it to be published on a specific date?
In a world of crossovers and coupe SUVs it's a nice change to finally to see authentic cars launched, like the J250 and the GX 550, that are true to themselves and not trying to be something that they're not. Make authenticity, durability, and personality great again!
I prefer a Land Rover: that way you can get to know the locals when it breaks down again.
😀😀
Thank you Ollie and TG team for putting out superb quality content..I had stopped watching TG a couple of years back since they had actor's and sport's jockeys trying to review cars..that was the downfall of TG when Jeremy and his team exited..by my faith has been renewed with Ollie..one feel's so engaged and rewarded for watching the content..I simply adore TG as a brilliant platform for auto reviews!!
Thanks for reviewing a great vehicle (super reliable) instead of trash)Land rovers,q7,x5,etc
I got a 2011 Prado VX diesel. Been thinking about replacing with an X5 until I watched this video. I changed my mind. Going to keep it, because I just realized that I haven't explored it fully. Love that car!
Amazing the difference when looking in the engine bay compared to the absolute mess that is under the bonnet of the new Bronco.
@@AbrahamArthemius because Toyota engineering. Gonna guess it’s also ten times easier to work on rare occasions it’s ever needed
@@sageoz9886 Pretty much. Being an engine that has been around for quite a while, the support for it is robust.
Bruh I just googled Bronco's engine bay and wtf. I know some people don't like the all plastic cover engine bay look, but Ford didn't even try to tidy stuff up. Wth. Not even a branding.
9:15 That old Land Cruiser is just beautiful. I don't know what it is about the design of the old FJ40, but it just totally gets at me. I've loved it ever since I was a child.
I love the turbo whistle throughout the whole video
Never liked a land cruiser before, but this is so much better looking than anything from Land Rover now, and I've owned a Disco 1, 2 and 3.
Sold, can't wait for mine.
Love it, the old adage still applies, If you want to go into the jungle, take a land rover, if you want to get back Take a Land Cruiser...love this Tonka Toy, I NEED one
New LC looks brilliant. Hopefully we can get the Diesel engine option in America
Highly doubt it.
Not a chance.
It’s gorgeous - I just wish first edition headlights were standard
I love it! This exact one! Wish I could buy one!
My wife really wants one of these. I agree with her that it’s very nice (especially the editions with the round DRLs, those are slick!) but it’s simply impractical since we don’t go off-roading and the MPG is so low. That being said… I am very glad this car exists, and I’d very much like to drive one someday.
Dubai is gonna take this to another level, can’t wait to see what they do with them
I was already sold by the photos, but love it even more after seeing it in action!
If they really do go for 50k I'll have one but my guess is they'll be closer to 75k and out of stock
Actually it’s $106,000. Even worse. 😭
Yeah! Not much "honesty" there
Studied found those complaining about price in the comment section were least likely to buy regardless of price.
We haven't priced it yet so no idea where they got 106k from? Was sat with the designer last week while he picked up his top gear award prices coming end of April but some of its features will he class leading which we can't share yet but it will he one mega vehicle aimed to take down land-rover😂
Terrible choice for the money
The prado model looks more Land Cruiser-ey and off-roadish than the main lc300 model. Toyota really moved that thing upmarket.
Us Indonesians love ladder-framed diesel-powered SUVs for a number of reason:
1. Decent fuel economy
2. Cheap(ish) running cost due to availability of cheap diesel fuel
3. Good tuning platform, at least from engine standpoint
4. Perceived prestige, since these vehicles are favored by high-ranking officials.
1kd is much better for tuning. more robust and less electronic to play. a favorite among offroad enthusiast. 1gd has potential to be a high tuneable engine but at a higher cost.
Would love to fit a overlanding kit to this and take on a trip from UK to South Africa 👌🏾
It is called the Land Cruiser in North America and Europe since they discontinued the regular Land Cruiser 300 series whereas in the UAE/other Middle eastern countries and Australia it is still called Prado (the smaller cheaper variant)
@@itssidx It should be called universally as the Land Cruiser 250, because there is no singular Land Cruiser after all. There are actually three different Land Cruisers rather than one.
There's no point in differentiating it in the markets where this is the only version available. So you will see that in the countries that have all 3 models available this one is still called the Prado like Australia, middle east and africa@@roberthoyt7921
@@itssidx"LC Prado" naming was never used in Europe, even when the 3 kinds of Land Cruiser were available.
And nowhere in the world it was badged only "Prado", always been "LC Prado".
the boot says Prado on this one
I never was this excited to get a car in a long while, it feels more like meeting a new friend that you just know you're gonna get a long perfectly.
I wonder which one between the 2024 Lexus GX 550 overland or the 2024 Toyota Land Cruiser Mr Ollie would take
The time from 15:17 is so amazing.
Look how this beast does off-road.
Wooo!🤩
I love the sound of that diesel
"It still puts off-road use front and centre". Best statement of the whole review. With that philosophy, you get a brilliantly built car, designed to last.
The same Engine that will use this All Terrain here in Latin America, Love the design of this new Toyota Land Cruiser Prado more sofisticated and Technological than ever before
Other rivals for this new Toyota Land Cruiser Prado (LC250) are also the Ford Bronco, Jeep Wrangler, Chevrolet Tahoe Z71 & Ford Expediton Timberline
In Australia we refer to this model as the Prado not the Land Cruiser. Is that the same in Latin America?
Yes. Here i'ts also Land Cruiser Prado @@bendgeddes
I have a 200 series LC and test drove one of these. I much preferred this one. I can only imagine I'd prefer it offroad too, since it's smaller and lighter overall. Want one quite bad, just need to sell my Tundra lol
Will there be a Short Wheel Base (SWB) version? The previous gen had a swb but it was only for commercial use unfortunately.
Cannot wait for Australians 🇦🇺 to do their OTT mods to make this into a real off roader with lifted body in remote shocks, bull bar with side scrub bars and rock sliders on 35” MTT’s, engine tune with a real 3” exhaust
I love the LC
My father got his in 1978
I eventually got mine in 1991
And have had one since, also had Hiluxes :-)
The 2.8 diesel is original Hilux motor, Toyota loves it and we loved it, drive it all over Africa, Ghana to Dar es salaam, to Cape Town. It's the best deal in my view, never complains, never rushes either 😂
Looking forward to seeing hopefully seeing a GR Landcruiser in the coming years
The difference between a Land Cruiser and a Defender?
That's easy.
The Land Cruiser will happily pull the Defender out of wherever it breaks down...
I heard a guy from Senegal say that they have an old saying there: If you want to go into the desert, get a Land Rover. If you want to come back, get a Toyota.
Top Gear UA-cam content is getting better and better!!!
The new 4 runner I hope takes a lot away from the looks of this but just smaller
it feels like most people don't like it in hybrid but to me hybrid is a more desireable option. am i the only one?
Toyota with this Land Cruiser have done what I feel so many marques have failed to do these days, they've introduced a car that is a total improvement from the previous generation. A lot of new car releases at the moment seem to come with too many compromises. It's either too expensive, too "techy", too big, too ugly, or a combination of all four.
Agreed
That’s because they milked the last generation for ten years too long. Don’t get me wrong, it was and is a good reliable vehicle but dynamically outclassed and oh so boring as well. This new one should leap two or three generations in one go.
*Total improvement except the engine.
Outstanding review! Great breakdown in the 'Rivals' section.
Land Rovers natural habitat is the back corner of a mechanics shop….
I've had my LC 150 since January 2013. Been to Frazer Island, Australia, on the beach many times and my vehicle has no rust and still drive like new!
dude u arguing with tiny brits? they have like 1/100 of Australian land and basically no proper offroad tracks like we do in Aus. they also get rain 24/7 so rusting for them is more possible. let'em drive their tiny little vw golfs and ford Fiastas and we can have the land cruisers. lol @@adriand1401
@KevTech1 lol you aren’t wrong
I’ve had land rovers and now I’m on Land Cruisers and for me nothing comes close to a LC for reliability and amazing looks this Land Cruiser is one beautiful motor. Will be a few years before I can trade in the LC Icon I have but this will be one I want to buy for my last vehicle and keep it for many years
Besides all that, it looks really cool.
It looks fantastic and dare I say it added a bit of a Disco 3/4 vibe to its styling.
Would of loved to see Jeromy Clarkson do this review. I did not know top gear was still on the telly, anyway who would need one of these in England.?
I do like the look of it. 😊
What’s the old saying: A Land Rover can take you to the other side of the world, but a Land Cruiser will bring back.😉
The legend of all terrains, high respect for this iconic piece
I can wait.
Love the idea of a small diesel, wonder if there are plans for a diesel hybrid option.
There's a mild hybrid of this engine in the Hilux so it's possible
Still loving my 4Runner Trail. 10 years old and still works great with very little maintenance costs. 🇨🇦
Thats the best car money can buy
Agreed
What… a 200hp cylinder? Best car money can buy?? Righto
@@LDrift Yeah but its a torque monster high displacement I4 Diesel all you need for a truck if you want efficiency.
Almost all Toyota vehicles are the best money can buy!
@@johnhein4851 Except the ones built in Mexico
I wish we could get that diesel in the US. We are only stuck with the 4cyl hybrid.
I wonder if this will be cheaper than the ford Everest In Jamaica 🇯🇲, if cheaper than the ford Everest then i will get one
The control of the vehicle is well-spoken of here.❤
Pretty impressive given those tyres
I love the Land Cruiser, it is the 4 wheel manifestation of the philosophy of the Toyota Company.
What a good review..🎉 please compare it with de DEFENDER 😅
Best review on the Landcruiser I've seen. Looking forward to getting mine in a few more weeks
The interior is nice🛋️
Yes
all of it is nice to be honest
I see it soo close to my LR Discovery 4. Same no no-nonense design, "tonka toy" style, capable on and off road. Well done, Toyota, this car could be my next!
