Really Enjoying the F-5 in DCS these Days and Love the Mig-29 as always, so this was a fun little video to make also really cool to see the huge impact it made in the world of dogfighting when the HOBS missiles were introduced. Now in the video I refer to the P5 and the R60 as rear aspect I should be more clear, they're technically all aspect but they have the best chance from a rear aspect. So, the trick is, when going up against adversaries from foreign air forces that have the MiG-29 in their fleet. Contact them before a conflict starts and ask them not to use the R-73. I'm sure the Iranians would love to listen to our request. 😆
or just kill them outside of R73 range with Amrams...

@@GrowlingSidewinder It's often a surprise when you get downed... In your average video. Buy Round 8 I had to recheck how much time remained in the video to see if you were going to get beat up the entire time. It was interesting to see the two get into the rate fight but wasn't surprised to see the -29 get behind you with the wing/ lifting body.

After many videos with, lets say, "surprising" results in dogfights illustrating how in BFM it really does boil down to the pilot and not the machine...this video helps to show, if nothing else, just how much of a game changer HOBS heat seakers are.

Have you considered doing some 2 on 2 with dissimilar aircrafts? Such as 2 teams one pilot on tomcat another on mirage or other modules on each team? I think it could be fun to see the coordination that goes into it
I was thinking the same thing. I like watching these one on one tactics and mitigating weaknesses, but it still seems like without formation flying it isn’t true to real tactics.

Unless you're running a texture mod on your weapons, you've got P5s on. That's an all aspect missile.
Ya addressed that in the pinned comment they may say all aspect but ur asking an awful lot if ur not shooting them from rear aspect.
@@davej3781 it has a similar (not same) seeker to the L/M which gives it all-aspect but the physical missile is basically still a J because that’s its Air Force lineage

@@mobius7927 Goes to show that the F-5 was ahead of its time. But yes, they are one big happy family in the same manner of many Russian jets with the Sukhoi 27 having spawned many variants since the 80's as a example.
that intro is why I prefer to play in Vietnam era or earlier flight sims. Modern missiles just take all the fun out of it.

I’ve got a interesting idea. You fly a obviously better jet than your opponent’s, but you get no weapons and he only gets guns. Your goal is to maneuver kill him.
There is an upgraded version of the F5 in Chile, with ELTA 2032 and Derby missiles.
We have the F-5EM here in Brazil with a lot of 4 gen avionics.

The F-5 and Mig-21 are said to be roughly comparable and could make a good matchup in the future.
Eh, I've fought a lot of 21's in my F-5 in Liberation and it's not easy at all. MiG-21 is better in just about every way, plus it has Fox-3's where the F-5 only has Fox-2's.

fun fact the mig 29 was made so manuvable because the sovets took a f5 and put it against some of their planes and were so terrified at how it could easily beat them they built the mig 29 with manuvableity in mind to beat the f5
Weirdly, one of the most likely engagements to happen in real life. Both are exported to countries that want to build air forces quick and cheap, often non-nuclear states that fight small skirmishes now and then.

Had your F-5 been the Brazilian advanced version or the Singapore F-5S one, you might have stood a better chance even if the MiG-29 were armed with R-73s.
i would like to see GS flying the f-5EM (a brazilian modernized f-5). It still can put a fight with most 4 gen fighters!

It's not just the F-5 - when we flew the F-18 against the Germans back in the 90's, the result was the same with their Archer missile. That thing, frustrated the fuck out of us. Pissed us off. The first 20 min or so we just stared at the damn thing; we were in awe of that jet. We changed things though and the next day and onward our tactics reflected the things we learned day 1. The archer was still a challenge but we adapted so we didn't get clubbed like baby seals. This is what you are seeing here with the F-5. The Hornet however, has the ability to do eye-watering AOA shots, pirouettes, and other things that we can use. The F-5, not so much. They should have made the tigershark. :|

Great video, GS. I’ve recently been educating myself on the evolution of the MiG-29 and the development of the MiG-35. The 35 seems to resolve many of the known shortcomings of the 29 and looks like an absolute monster. It’s too bad they never found buyers for the improved version of the F-5, the F-20 Tiger Shark. The F-20 would have been a potent fighter still today. The JF-17 seems to be remarkable similar in many ways as the F-20. Perhaps a JF-17 vs MiG-29 fight in the near future?
