- It's the peak of Fall on our off-grid Tennessee homestead! We've spent so much time working recently that we haven't taken the time to enjoy the beautiful colors and weather. Today, we do exactly this! (And of course, there's still plenty of projects!) From foraged acorn pancakes to setting up our rain water collection, come runaway with us!

For a cheap man's gutter guard, use some of the 1/2 inch hard chicken wire cut a little bigger than the inside dim, so when you put it in, it bends to form a bit arch.
That is a great idea and we will be doing that for now :) Thanks for your knowledge.
I've never had acorn pancakes but I'm from Paris, TN. My grandparents & aunts & my parents always had a mason jar of bacon grease on the stove. I keep mine in the fridge it will keep longer. Great video!! Fall is my favorite time of the year.
We have so much abundance here living here in TN ❤️ it is so special! There is nothing better than a little bacon grease to make everything taste a little better 😊

@@laylawalker8897 Yep, small world. I just bought 5 acres of land close to Camden near Kentucky Lake. Its considered Big Sandy, yet its at the lake. One thing I noticed are a ton of tiny red ticks. I have a dog and I'm wondering what the best course of action is for ticks to stay off of him and us when walking through the trees on the land. Any ideas?
Get You a leaf blower and use it to get the leaves off roof and out of the gutters

I'm not sure if you know, but with a cast iron pan don't wash it, just wipe it out because the flavors of what you cook in it will absorb into it. I remember my mom have a cast iron pan & never washed it just wiped it out.
The colors here have been amazing :) We are so lucky to see the change in the seasons here. Yes we really use our cast iron for as much as we can. We LOVE cooking with it.
My generation in the South grew up with a jar of bacon grease set on the back of the stove are in the fridge. Lol That's a southern thing not a homestead thing. Lol

I work with your Mom and sister over in Chattanooga, I’m constantly giving your sister a hard time on the Jets, as a Cowboys and Vols fan I know the pain of your team not doing so well. I’m enjoying following y’all’s journey and hope to get a chance to meet you guys if y’all come to visit Chattanooga.
Maybe try using some chicken wire to cover your gutters and minimize the number of leaves that end up in there. Cheap & temporary solution.

Just a heads up about gutter guards. We spent the money to put gutter guards on our house and the squirrels made haste to move in and set up home in the protected gutters. Subsequently, they started damaging our house. Then we had to turn around and spend money to have them removed! Hardware cloth is probably the better way to go even though leaves will probably get stuck in them, they still won't clog up your gutters.
You should try going to KC and Chiefs Kingdoms for a culture shock.
pancakes, flapjacks, and hotcakes are just pancakes hotcakes are from my grandfathers genertation , flapjack his fathers generation and we of this generation call them pancakes, but i always enjoyed going to grandpas and sitting on his counter and helping him make some good ole hotcakes for breakfast it was the best and i truly miss him!

I was under the impression that acorns had to be leached to be edible. Did you treat them or the flour before cooking?

I was told a hot cake was unsweetened more of like a dinner bread than breakfast. But flapjacks and pancakes I thought were the same. At least the ones my stepdad made growing up were not as sweet at pancakes.

Only difference I've ever heard was that flapjacks can be baked. The others are cooked on a griddle, or stove top. A temporary gutter guards. Get heavy screen and cut it down and install for now. 4'x25' roll of screen from $8 to $60.
