- When you're renovating a 35 year old camper, nothing goes as planned. With temperatures dropping below freezing this coming week, we feel the urgency to get this thing ready to live in! With the permanent site for the camper still being prepped, we focused on internal renovations this week. We are so excited to share the transformation of this old camper into a vintage off-grid tiny home here on our homestead with you!

I'm a new viewer, and I encourage anyone who lives off grid. I do have some advice on your faith wheel it will save u from frozen water/sewer pipes, and I general frozen feet. I live in southern Missouri and we have the same climate so.. u will want to enclose the bottom of your fifth wheel wether it's with plywood or haybales whatever you choose make sure to use insulation then u will want to install a few heat lamps under there and In the under storage compartments they don't need to be heavy duty or even keep it truly warm just above freezing, also Lowe's sells an insulated hose for water connection that works wonderfully and don't use metal connectors they will freeze also might want to build a small insulated shed for your water tote
I totally agree with you about taping before you paint. Tape creates more problems than it solves. A steady hand and patience works better.

I would build a cover over the camper with a metal roof on it then put a screened in porch on the front side and in the winter you can put plexy glass on so the sun will help warm it up , that's a nice floor plan

When Matt started listing what he found under the couch, I got a good laugh! I do that when I find stuff in the dryer and a couple of years ago, I found a mini naked babydoll almost EXACTLY like the two he found. I posted it on Facebook and we still laugh about it today and our middle child was the only one living at home. He was 22 at the time.
Just a thought about the cement you are going to use for the root cellar. My brother lost his home in the June 22, 2012, Waldo Canyon Fire in Colorado Springs, Colorado. 340 homes were destroyed. When they rebuilt they made a safe room in the basement out of cement. The same type of cement they use for runways at airports. They put a steel door for the room. He had several gun safes in the house, the fire caused the ammunition stored in the safes to explode and bullets went through the safe. Thanks for allowing us to join you in your journey.

Product to keep on hand to wit: "Through the Roof". Small patch jobs this product is great for and I sealed floor around toilet. If you have built in drawers, check underneath to assure creatures have no access. Paint job is expert, color surprisingly does not make room appear smaller. Speedy healing!
If you keep a wet wash cloth with you while you paint, use it to wipe off any mistakes as you go. Just make sure and use a clean part of the cloth each time
Idea…..if the bug problems are real, you can get a bug catcher and feed them to some chickens…..just sayin’….😁love the content guys!!✌️🤟
On your cabin, remove windows and door and remove siding. That gets you down to the rough in. There by building back is constructed on site. Good luck on your plans
Cass you are such a trooper. I just got over this stupid new flu that’s out this year. (Sounds like I tried a new coat or something) But seriously it was no joke. I slept for four days. But to see you up and going is wonderful just try not to overdo or it’ll knock your socks off and you’ll be fighting round two. The color of the bedroom walls are astonishing beautiful. I never would have thought of that color in a bedroom but I am now. Lol. Can’t wait to see more progress. I love how you two do so much together but on your own little (well big) projects it seems to go by faster for you than tackling one project together. I’m seeing you coming your way and your hubby coming from the other way and y’all meeting in the middle of the kitchen. Lol. Y’all are just great and I love the positivity in all of them. They say to spray the outside of your place with soapy water. That is supposed to help keep out the Asian beetles. I would put a skirting around the camper that is insulated. For the hole you put in that spot, just cut a one by and screw it in the back and then you can just put your circle back.

We just spent the weekend in Jellico and those beetles were everywhere inside our cabin. Didn’t ruin our relaxing weekend a bit. Nature, right?

I use vinger and a splash of dawn, spray around all doors and windows to keep the stink bugs and lady bugs out. So far has worked pretty good
I have a 1992 Jayco 5th wheel camper. Although the bedroom is above the 5th wheel, I enclosed the underside to keep the bedroom warmer as I'm up in the North Woods of Wisconsin. To keep your living room warmer,that might be an option besides providing a space for storage

I find its helpful to build a big deck just on cap block with a 2x6 frame for the camper first and then do my remodel. It seems to make everything feel easier.....Keep on keeping on.
Oh yes that nasty carpet and couch is gone bet you had fun pulling all them Staples out 😊 I will never have wall to wall carpet ever again. It holds dirt and smells and makes a love nest for fleas. Maybe put down light burned bring out the wood grain of grade A plywood with Thompson weather seal . Oh yes I agree about the blue tape , green frog tape what a waste of time and money and wet rag for water base paint or what you said for oil base . That tape is good for like painting cars and trucks.Thumbs up great job.

I love in a Rv for about 4 years now and we did some remodeling like tore carpet out we regret installing wood floors we have a wood stove in here to stay warm and we play hell keeping it warm so keep that in mind

I just paint with a wet rag or towel and if I miss clean it up right away. No tape and it's easier then paint thinner if you get it when it's still wet.

I live in Western TN, and also found a lot of Lady bugs hanging on the doors and windows of my house
have you guys got a 5th wheel brace thing for the hitch yet? you will want one for sure but there kinda salty. i paid like 225 bucks a few years back for one. plus i would clean the roof and get a 5 gallon bucket of the white rubberized roof coating and do 3 to 4 coats b4 it gets crazy cold.you could use the thing behind the couch and do some small spears facing up in the top.....i would also go underneath and check for exposed pipes and insulate w some wrap for freezing.lots to do lol
We have not yet but looking into it right now lol. That isn't a bad price for one. We used that stuff on the bus when we converted that and really liked it. We are prepping for winter as fast as we can, without going too crazy haha :) Thanks for your knowledge friend.
Just a little advice from Ontario Canada, I was going to suggest to block in & insulate the undersides of the camper to protect your water/sewer pipes and hoses, I would also do the same for the 5th wheel overhang, you will sure notice the difference with warmer floors.
I never use tape either, ive used different size brushes to get close. I like the colors too.
You should add extra insulation first. Campers aren't meant to live in year round. Good luck! 4:27 ck
Yeh. Campers are "thin-skinned' when it comes to winter temps, even in Tennessee. Since heat rises, I'd think applying some "R-value" to the roof before sealing it against the rain and snow. And those windows look like typical "single-pane" and will be your second greatest source of heat loss. And as was already mentioned, make sure all "water services" are heavily insulated and heated. And wood linings should be sealed with mould resistant paint since when they get cold, your breath and cooking moisture will condense on them. Ideally, the insides of perimeter surfaces should get some additional "R-value" and moisture barrier installed.

Do you know about Travis Heinze? Have you ever considered letting him live on your property, perhaps as a caretaker or an overseer? I want him to hook up with Hollis down in the Carolinas but we are also advocating for him to engage someone else on a stable living system. I think he might make a good hermit to live undiscovered and undisturbed in the wilds of nature.
Cool video. Your land looks amazing. I think I am a couple hours away from you guys in TN. The ladybugs know the cold is coming. Been crazy at my place also. Vacuum is def the way to go. I think there is also a spray for the outside but not sure how toxic it is. They will be gone soon enough. Tuesday night is gonna be cold.

Great video, my Wife and I are looking forward to retiring in the next 2 years and have been looking at eastern Tennessee which I have read has fewer Tornado's than the western side of the state. We definitely want to move into the mountains, we live in Tampa, Florida and the taxes and insurance is skyrocketing higher every year because of the threat and damages of Hurricanes. We have vacationed over the years in several rural places and like the areas of northern Georgia, western Carolina's and eastern Tennessee. Do you have any advise on what to look for or what to look out for and avoid in eastern Tennessee? Which counties might be homestead friendly and which ones to avoid? Do you have any favorite areas we should look at to consider retiring to? We are looking to get property away from the concrete jungle and just enjoy the peace and solitude of nature. Thank you Lana and Michael.
I would suggest covering the hole in the wood behind the couch....just to be safe... it would be another avenue for mice to possibly get in...better safe than sorry 😊

Love the bedroom color but what about the cabinetry…it needs a coat of something don’t you think? Maybe it’s just me but I’m not a fan of that veneer. Black would possibly be better? Or cream color?
The idea is that the top cabinets we will be painting and the bottom cabinets we hopefully are going to keep. They are in such good condition and after living in rigs for 3 years now we really know that paint in rigs gets destroyed really easy with cabinetry. What I do like about the bottom cabinets is it has a red brown trim and that gives it a really nice western kinda cowboy vibe. Sometimes it is hard to match everything until you get stuff in it so we will be doing renovations even after the fifth wheel is complete.
How was ripping that carpet up? I've done it once in an older motorhone and it was a pain. They put dozens of staples every square foot.
