I like it when dice games actually give you uses for all values of dice and not just high or low ones. For instance perhaps a lower die gives a weaker action but it allows the action to be executed quicker while the reverse is true for the larger die values, gives it a real tension and decision between if you need to move quickly or possibly get a more powerful action that might not even pay out. In this game, that just feels like a lost opportunity in that low values have no use at all.
"This is about as much fun as I can have, rollin' a fist-fulla dice, dice chucker, and if that's the kinda thing you like, and you've got some time to kill, you could do a lot worse than One Deck Dungeon." -rahdo. I expect this quote to be on the One Deck Galaxy KS page
The Forest expansion does add a poison element which can be interesting but I would highly recommend starting with the first game before adding poison as that can get bogged down pretty quickly as you're trying to heal yourself several-times-over.
I am loving One Deck Dungeon right now, but my favorite game that involves chucking a bunch of dice is Doom Machine. I feel like it's one of the best short games if you have table space. That said im really enjoying ODD right now even though ive gotten my butt kicked and never finished a game yet. :)
i did it a few months ago, but sorry to say it's now only viewable by folks who back the show. here's the link in case you're curious www.patreon.com/posts/its-that-time-24323460
Thank you for your overview and especially for the positive comment about the all-female adventurers. I also think that is wonderful that they went with that! My son doesn't mind at all, and my daughter is really happy if a game has strong female characters.
I would be even more interested, though, in a deck builder approach to this. Start with relatively generic blue/pink/yellow cards, build up your deck through defeating things (with the new blue/pink/yellow cards giving concrete skills, perhaps). Maybe drop the damage track, instead damage is measured by trashing cards from the top of your deck (you don't get to pick, and they're offline until you heal).
Thanks for the playthrough. I own this game and really enjoy it, despite not normally being a fan of solo games. And also, thanks for pointing out the all-female characters. That was an intentional decision by the developers to create female characters in non-sexualized clothing. Keep up the great work!
I've been playing with a friend (alternating bosses between the two packs), and liking it a lot, but you're right that it can approach an hour. My main complaint is that it feels too easy, especially by the end where we've hardly taken any damage at all from final bosses. Then again, we haven't got to the level 3 dungeons yet, and maybe it's a matter of classes (we do Ranger/Paladin). The Artifact Quests (from the website) might help, but I feel it's got a bit of a limited life span. Still, very much worth the purchase to go through everyone at least once.
When you say you have to go through the whole deck of cards again, are you sure you are playing it correctly? No encounters you have had return to the deck, so the deck will get smaller each time. (Like Bohnanza!) A quick back-of-envelope calculation indicates that you will probably "explore" (reveal 4), 3 times during floor 1, 2 times during floor 2, and 1 time during floor 3.
What he means is that when the deck ends you go to a new level and you have to go through the deck again, meaning the cards that at that point are still part of the deck, he didn't meant that you will have to play all the cards again
Easy mode? Exploring shows you what's in each room, you roll your dice and then decide which room to tackle. This is quite a bit different from the original feel, and I'm not sure it's a good idea, but it would give you 'resources and choose how to apply' aspect instead of the 'decide what to do and see if it works'.
Would you please give me a list of board games where I can leveling my main hero up? I have no idea what keyword I should google up (RPG keyword gives me nonsense results). I want to do PVE with my main character (get experience and stats up, learn new skills etc). I like the one in this video (even roll based you can do many decisions here). PS. I know it would sound weird, I love board games but I hate to set up them that why I prefer digital versions (especially mobile). Don't blame me, people :p Thanks God this one is available on Android OS.
dice can't be modified over time, they're always d6's. more chips can be added to the cup, creating more dynamic outcomes. also rolling 3 dice has a set probabilistic outcome for each roll (1-6). drawing 3 chips from a cup changes the probability as you go, again creating more interesting and engaging results :)
@@ZelDances ehhhh well yeah i mean it does take bookkeeping off your hands but the app on android is terrible. Its so laggy and the input response is so slow. On pc its better but nothing beats pulling out my playmat and chucking the physical dice. I love the pc game tho i only play it on the go or when im too tired to deal with physical setup but still want to play.
is it just me or is this game stupid hard. 4 plays today with the "easy" boss. Got to the boss two out of the four, never managed to take more than half of his life and I felt very well prepared on the final run.

The expansion has the wisp for example.
I have the expansion and the main game (kickstarter backer). A true gem of a game! Nice review Rahdo! Def plays better solo.

Craig Maloney can you just not ignore poison if you want to play it like the original?
Awesome insight 👍👏

Love the review!
Sorry if this is off topic but aren’t you overdue for a game collection update? 👀

too many to count! but if you ask the same question here: www.boardgamegeek.com/forum/8/bgg/recommendations you're sure to get a very solid list! :)
The randomness with the dice is the same as the tokens in Arkham Horror TCG. Its literally the same randomness when resolving encounters and combat.

Dude, are you on SPEED?!
The App killed this game for me. Fun game tho.
Same. The app just makes everything so organized.
Hell no..
Playing board games on my phone just takes away the fun for me.
A reason why I play board games to give my self a break from a screen.

I enjoy at 2 player.
Yes also digital
Man's got a point..
Very cheap tons of puzzle time roguelite. My kind of marmalade, just not Rahdo’s jam.
