    Some of Tom's issue with how the game plays would make a lot more sense if he played the physical version, not that I think he'd enjoy it.

    For not having played the physical game, your thoughts are spot-on! Assigning the dice and picking your choice of loot are neat aspects. But it's also a repetitive luck-fest with relatively weak systems... Indeed, low rolls are always bad in every way.
    The four doors are only meant to give you and option to "flee": leave it open and go back to it later at a better time.

    the purpose of the multiple doors is pretty insignificant 95% of the time, but there is the occasion that you might pick a door, decide it is a bad idea, it stays revealed, and then you go back to it later. luck is definitely a big issue starting out and a bad run could end in death no matter what, but it takes that rogue-like approach of giving you more power with each death (and even more with each success.) reaching a point where that is truly significant requires more time than you put into the game, but it does mean a more developed character has less trouble mitigating the randomness.
    i've enjoyed the app, but i could definitely see how it might not appeal to every one.

    From watching your play through, the big negative is obviously that it didn’t teach the game well enough. You seemed lost to many of the basics the entire time.

    Agree, I have it and found it disappointing. Even with skills, rolls that were overly good or overly bad made me feel like I didn't have the amount of puzzle or decision making I want in a solo game.

    I didn't love the game and sold my copies (original and Forest of Shadows) but your complaint about the time mechanic is not really fair. The rules entirely explain how it works, you just didn't read them.
    Also, while you are mostly at the mercy of luck early on in a dungeon (although you get the loot even if you get smacked around), by the time you get to floor 3 or the boss you should have multiple abilities that allow you automatically get certain die results, extra dice, rerolls, and more. My son and I played 4 or so dungeons in campaign mode and never lost. We were always able to so heavily modify our dice that we could easily cover multiple 5 or 6 boxes even with poor rolls.

    6:55 Just my opinion here, but this isn't entirely accurate. Imho a big part of the game is risk assessment, and judging whether you can take on a certain encounter or not. Yes, you can take an encounter and roll poorly and be punished for it. But the game isn't punishing you for rolling bad - its punishing you for taking a risk you shouldn't have. A lot of the time if you're getting crushed, you should have recognised the possibility before hand and made sure to have potions, etc accordingly as you are willing to risk it for the biscuit, or you should've just fled! If you work out the risks beforehand, and decide what you are willing to take as consequences, you will never be frustrated by bad rolls as you're ready for them to come.

    I will say, I think all of the criticism is spot on, but I still can't help but enjoy playing this game from time to time. The character progression is probably the fun bit. Yes, it's definitely difficult at first, but after awhile, you can gain skills that help with the bad rolls.
    But on a separate note, I just wanted to give a shoutout to the mobile game dev themselves here, Handelabra games. They take tabletop games and, IMO, make fantastic digital versions. I've seen a lot of crappy digital ports, but the few I've played from Handelabra are by far some of the most top quality.

    The time is meant to prevent you from getting to OP by doing too many trials. Also, when you are out of time, you can manage continue by paying life, so a bit of management. Rolling low is always worst then rolling high, but the point is to manage your life/time lost to be able get and beat the boss, we could say that it is a mechanic of the game. I can't say that I've played a lot, but I did do about 15 playthroughs and after some time, you see that there is a lot more depth to it. I would give this a 6.5/10 because at some point, it gets repetitive and I lost interest.

    well, at least I found One Deck dungeon less random than elder sign app. In Elder Sign, you can keep rerolling dice but keep getting poor outcomes.

      When I first started playing Elder Sign, I hated it because there seemed no strategy at all, and I never won it. Then I realized the strategy (and the synergy & superpowers of certain investigators), and suddenly I hardly ever lost the base game. Never won the harder expansions though.

    I think you would like it better in its fiscal format, I heard you say that you don’t like solo game but I hope you give it a chance, it’s really good, I would love it if you would review it some time

    Tom, I recently played it again, and found that this game is not very luck based. If you found yourself killed due to poor dice roll, there are usually a reason: (1) poor character selection (the characters are not good for the dungeon you chose); (2) poor strategy (e.g., excessively choosing dice as upgrade or experience as upgrade rather than skills). This game is actually very balanced; you can use skills to pull off crazy combos (e.g., get a free pink dice and use the pink dice to increase two of your other dices by the value of two). Therefore, if a player finds this game too luck based, it is likely their fault. I can use the hardest difficulty (i.e., no portion and starts with level 1 instead of level 2) and beat the hardest dungeons (3-star dungeons).

      "The character isn't good for the dungeon" is just bad design. Every character should be *viable*, even if some are better or worse. That's just simply not the case. ODD practically mandates that you use specific chars for specific locations. That's... not fun. It is supposed to be a Dice Manipulation game, not a puzzle game.

    I really like the game and the app implementation. In this game you have to choose if you want options to mitigate or options to get extreme results. There is potion of clarity for example, that makes you re-roll all 1 and 2 (and an additional black die) for instance.
    To have a really bad roll isn't that bad most of the time as you can get back into the game in the next encounters.
    I think, this game has quite a steep learning curve and Tom was not deep enough into it.

    I’m in the “I enjoy this game” category, picked up everything that was out on the Steam sale this summer. Can’t disagree with anything Tom says but it clearly must scratch some kind of itch for me. Had also not ever thought about that all the heroes are female.

    The game is for 1-2 players but really, if you are playing solo, you really NEED to take TWO heroes into the dungeon. I think Tom's biggest mistake was taking only one hero through the dungeon for his solo plays.

    • @Lavoye
      @Lavoye 3 роки тому +1

      It does not matter much. The game scales for 1 or 2 heroes anways. It's made to be playable both ways. It's a question of preferences. Tom's real problem is his ignorance. He does not even know why it's called One deck Dungeon to begin with. There's the complete rule book in the app but he didn't bother. The app is fine, it's a simple game. There is luck, but there is also a lot of luck mitigation skills.

    I still feel betrayed that when I was getting into solo gaming I saw several opinions online that this is a "good, cheap solo game" that isn't as brainless as it looks. It is as brainless as it looks and now I have a copy of it that probably no one wants. I never even got far enough to see any dice manipulation because either I lost immediately from bad rolls, or rolled well but was crushed under the weight of extreme anomie. I kept forgetting to place dice on the dungeon cards in addition to the creature cards because honestly everything about the exercise is pointless and is more an exercise in following rules than exploring game mechanics.

    • @thedeltastrat
      @thedeltastrat 2 роки тому +1

      imho it is a good solo game, and it is not at all brainless. I understand that its not for everyone, and some people are put off by dice too, but I honestly think the main reason most people don't like it is due to not grokking the strategy. With good risk management and assessment, and decisive skill and item picks to tailor your skills to the boss at the end, and its dungeon boxes which appear each floor too, you can beat most encounters with little to no consequences, even with sub-optimal rolls.
      Even in the early game, with almost no dice manipulation, it is not a luck fest imho. You just need to be a LOT more careful as to when you flee and when you fight, and often I try to build up my heroic feat with littler prey (this depends on your character tho, obvs) so I can fight bigger ones like a 4xp whilst the dungeon boxes are low. For me, my first priority is getting to roll that extra dice with an item, which can be very useful early game. The only reason I won't take an item first is if a skill presents itself that is too good to pass. Remember, if you go over an item/skill limit due to your current level, you can recycle an old one as xp! So its almost always better to take enemies as an item early, even if its not a colour you need loads of for the particular boss, because you can just replace it with a more useful colour later.
      Its just lots of little things like the above, which you only really learn by playing, which culminate into more and more successful runs, and once you get past ~ floor 1 you should usually have enough skills to mitigate bad rolls somewhat, and the puzzle gets even better as you not only have all the decisions from above, to maybe a lesser extent some would say, but also the puzzle of using skills and placing dice and combining them to beat the now more difficult monsters. And it all eventually culminates to the boss fight, which is my favourite part of the entire game. Idk its just so satisfying to me to use all of these hard-fought skills and dice to slowly unlock this gratifying puzzle and place those damage tokens on its face.

    The game has the same feeling for me as many roll and write games. I like the theme but it's really just a roll and place.

    • @chofmann
      @chofmann 3 роки тому

      I haven't played many roll&write games, but from those I played and found pretty complex (for example the "that's pretty clever" games) have not nearly as much decission making and progression.
      Also, randomness is a complaint you hear about pretty often, but mostly from beginners. You can mitigate a lot of that. I had situations where I rolled three ones in a row and was able to deal with that in a good way, you just need to think of those.

    • @RvLeshrac
      @RvLeshrac 2 роки тому

      I think this nails my problem with it. It claims to be dice-manipulation, but it only has slightly more manipulation than Sagrada, most of it not even meaningful manipulation.

  • @RvLeshrac
    @RvLeshrac 2 роки тому

    I recently picked it up, and it is hands-down the worst dice manipulation game I've played, with an almost exclusive reliance on RNG due to the woeful lack of meaningful manipulation. I'm really not sure why it gets as much love as it does vs. the alternatives.
