Tejas for me is like BSF... Capable but not to fight against army and good for defence of our army and IAF bases.
That's precisely the role of LCA, act as first line of defense as an interceptor aircraft.
That's what it is made for - Point Defence.
Army and IAF bases are protected by defense security corps and not by BSF.

Tejas Mk2 is filler between Tejas and Rafale... and AMCA will ensure 5th gen stealth capabilities too :)
The most sensible comment that I have come accross.
We need to understand that Tejas Mk1 or even Mk1A are not top of the line fighter jets available wirh IAF. On the other hand for our western neghbour both F16 and J10 are the best they have. So, it doesnt make sense to compare the two. Where Tejas Mk1 will be helping IAF, is the eastern border, Southern border and inland bases which when equipped with Tejas, can release Su30s and Mig29s stationed at these bases. The released fighter jets can then be deployed at the western and northern borders. So, basicallt, Tejas Mk1 and Mk1A can allow the IAF to take care non-hostile borders and internal patrolling.
Our rafale > su 30 mki > tejas mk2 > mirage 2000 > mig 29k > Tejas mk1a > mig 21 bison
Spectate Jaguars can't be compared because they are meant for the low altitude fliyings and bombing missions..

wrong... Tejas were stationed in Kashmir, so in DIRECT BORDER AREA that too with 2 fronts all at one place... Tejas can be the 1st line of defence, while our Mig 29s and Su 30s get ready side by side during that time... (fully loaded with better missiles)
also Tejas can next be stationed near Siliguri Corridor, for the same purpose, while Rafales get ready for combat
But LCA can go Max 400 km in the enemy territory and its main role is providing area defence or Combat Air Patrolling, so in real life Scenario enemy aircraft will come in Indian aerospace to engage with tejas ground defence and SAMs will be supporting to LCA

People need to realize that In modern air combat it is seldom the case of individual aircrafts slogging it out on their own. On the contrary whole packages fight. Besides OCA, DCA, interdiction, strike all missions have different dynamic of combat. As retd Air marshal Anil chopra concluded in one article that You can't really predict exactly what will happen in actual combat.

But the fact of the matter is people form opinions of which aircraft is better on the basis of these individual comparisons and get shocked when in real combat an individual aircraft's capability doesn't impact the outcome as they had hoped.
for eg. If you compare mig29 and f111 individually then mig29 would be clear winner. But in gulf war a Ef111 achieved a maneuver kill on the mig29.

It was a fine and very informative video. But I think you have missed the IRST sensor in J 10c fighter. Which is not available in the Tejes mk1A fighter, and it is an important capability. Thank you.

It all depends how tejas is used in our doctrine. Next air warfare will be drone and electronic warfare systems centric. How we use Awacs, networks, Refueler, missiles etc. Tejas may be used under the s300 air bubble or similar AADS. Tejas will be used defensively for point defence or CAP roles in which we may decide not to use our top line platform and save air time, maintenance etc
The Chinese have 700 J10s. India is still producing Tejas mk1A which is inferior to the Chinese single engine fighters. Tejas mk2 will surely provide us that edge over J10s, then why are we placing more orders for Tejas mk1A. 40+83 are enough to counter JF 17s and provide adequate air defense. Tejas Mk2 should be made the back bone of the Indian Airforce and maybe the per unit cost will decrease as we keep producing more and more of these jets

49 JF17A Block-I (now upgraded to Block II level).
60 JF17A Block-II
25 JF17B Block-II
11 JF17C Block-III (AESA radar)
Total:145 JF17s (2021) and India only two Tejas MK1 (FOC)

That's 18 useless prototypes which did not prove to be viable for further development.
It's worth noting that Tejas Mark 1 did not proceed to mass production due to the presence of 53 flaws and shortcomings (pointed out by CAG) in it that necessitated a redesign and reengineering.
Tejas Mk1A, on the other hand, is somewhat improved version of the Mk1 with minor adjustments to address its shortcomings and make it acceptable.
Out of those 40 Tejas only two got final operational clearance. So the remaining 38 Tejas can be called "useless junk"
Tejas should also be given GaN radar which will have a better range and tracking ability, with Astra MK II game will be even in offensive capability. While Tejas will have an edge in EW but overall weight category will impact the fight.

I think Tejas is meant to tackle J10s in Pakistan. 100km BVR range is enough for combat capability. And probably the Tejas would outnumber the pakistani J10s 2:1.

Tejas Mrk 1a was designed for patrolling and defence not a offence oriented weapon.Amca and rafale will do the actual job combined with Mig 57 for long range fights.
Tejas and its different upgraded versions are replacement of light weight mig 21 fleet...mainly used for airdefence ROLE.
Great video. I also think your comparison should include the roles of the fighter aircrafts assigned by its respective airforce. I would think Tejas would be used more for a point defence role.

Do also Remember that our motorways also serve as runways of PAF. So we have numerous bases all over the country.

Knowing one's capabilities is good , further one will not put something against someone where it will be of no use , additional UAV and teamed unmanned mission will also take into effect as far as I see the progress of LCA.
LCA is important as it gives us indigenous production capabilities, Bharat can build further on basis of product development process , scaling it up or getting to use the info and experience is a big thing which we never had . A country like ours have achieved this and the know how what you get is the actual stuff . Airforce is ordering it obviously because it is a workhorse and I do not remember any accidents till now of this platform.
Dont forget history guys sabre jet was one of the most adavanced jets. we blew it with gnat fighter jets which is actually very weak in capabilities than sabre and currently we blew a F16 with mig 21. we have taken down more superior and sophesticated American jets with outdated machines and our tejas is way more modern and strong and j10c is nothing compared to it
If anything Tejas is being operated by a military that is sincere to its country, unlike JF-10c which is operated by a military whose only war victories are against their own civilians and hold a world record for the biggest military surrender in history. It is a fact and fact doesn't care about your feelings.
In close range air to air combat tejas -mark-1a has clear advantage because it can carry world's two top rate wvr air to missiles asaram and pyton-5 and especially pyton-5 having lock on after launch with 360° off the boresite capabilities which nullifies any advantage j-10 has in terms of maneurability.

I think people clearly dont understand how much advantage a more 'stealthy' aircaft can be , even if the other guy can see you the pK will be much much less as you evade missile as tejas is a nimble fighter , plus i think tejas can be used as a 'shoot and scoot' technique aircraft
Tejas has a very small radar signature and visual signature compared with other older generation fighters like F16, Gripen, and J10 (Tejas Mk2 as well). It will detect and get a lock on J10C and get a missile lock before the J10C can lock onto it. With Astra 2, 3, and Meteor, it will also be able to shoot them down first. If the avionics suite and jammers are kept up to date, it won't have trouble keeping the J10C in check. Also flting low in the Himalayan valleys it will be very difficult to acquire including vistally, and dispersed deployment close to the front lines will reduce range problems. By the way, the range is more important for straegic ground attack missions. For air defence you need to be stationed close to the border in order to intercept enemy targets in time.

Imagine Tejas Stealth, a 5th generation fighter in direct competition with Su 75 checkmate but it would be better for us because our avionics is superior, and soon engine will be too.
J10 aircraft is based on the design and avionics of an old Israeli aircraft design called "lavy" which was later abandoned but bought by the Chinese secretly and later created the j10
Tejas needs dual pod for having 4 Astra missiles in total.
When you study all the wars in last century, sides with better tactics and command structure has cone on top.
@defencematrix, can you guys discuss the lack of Supercruise capability in Tejas Mk1 & Mk1A and why that is important for Mk2? Tejas Mk2 should be comparable to Gripen E/F, which can supercruise at M1.2 (not sure, if with combat load), as they both have a nearly identical engine and comparable weight class. Currently there is no mention of Supercruise capability planned for Mk2. Considering Mk2 is still on the drawing board compared to J10 (which seems to lack Supercruise), we should take this opportunity to optimize Mk2 for Supercruise to give it a leg up. Supercruise capability can impact both offense (gives momentum for BVR launched at supersonic speeds, so that the missile does not need to spend its own precious fuel getting supersonic) and defense (while aircraft notching to defend incoming BVR) during BVR combat... thus reducing range penalty (if afterburner is employed)... all points mentioned in this video. It might interesting to have a follow-up video with a wishlist for Tejas Mk2 to make it comparable to J10C / Gripen E/F.
Tejas mk2 is not on drawing board it is on the verge of roll out. Meaning you can't modify it's design anymore only upgrade it's engines and systems.
ADA claims Tejas mk2 will supercruise we have to take them by their word, their simulations probably suggests so.
We need to modify the air to air combat setup. 2 BVR missile is not good.
After firing the 1st missile the pilot will be on a tremendous pressure and will not be willing to waste it and will try to come closer to its adversary to make its last BVR count.
Secondly a 50km ASRAAM shot will not be as effective as a 50km PL15 or PL12 shot.
Thirdly the people who are comparing J10 with with Tejas is not smart enough...they don't understand what category means.
After equipping Tejas mark1 with Astra-2 or Astra-3, it can easily tackle J-10 of China. J-10 has yet to proove itself in combat , Tejas has also not seen actual combat.
Tejas Mk1A should be equipped with Astra Mk2 immediately so that it can take on J10C.
Lets not be overly optimistic. we have to be realistic and recognise that we lack so we can make improvements,

Tejas is almost the first ever jet platform which is more likely give our engineers the much needed development experience, which will benefit IAF in the future. Like Chinese Chengdu so called 5th gen jet, which Chinese engineers are continuously working to develop the platform to make it 5th gen jet. EXPERIENCE COUNTS.

Don't think so. Mk2 is still being tested. It will take time, but will be thoroughly tested.
Yes, it can if it is able to survive first two minutes of aerial combat.
Tejas Mk1A would be performing roles of the MiG21s we had and that plane performed perfectly in interception roles.
It had the potential to even chase away fighters like F16, but was not advanced in case of radar, maws, rwr - hence BVR was not its cup of tea. It had to move in for close combat which in enemy air space can spell doom if enemy fighter strength is greater.
Tejas Mk1A 's primary purpose would be that of an interceptor and in that role amid our ground based radar, onboard radar and SAMs , J10s would be caught easily and thanks to its BVR capability Tejas would score easily if the J10s dont turn tail .
In enemy skies though TejasMk1A need to be in a combination of fighters like Rafale and MiG29. In a properly working network centric circuit - every fighter will have information from the best radar onboard plus their own radar .Rafale will carry the best radar , hence MiG29s will be vectored in to attract and evade while TejasMk1A would be taking potshots in the direction the MiG29s would be targeted from. This will be followed by an Su30mki which will launch a Brahmos and take care of strategic enemy targets.
Rafale in itself is a giant advantage for expeditionary missions, it is like a fighter AEWACs .
Our air force have specifically stressed on network centric warfare since 2010s and by now have acquired a massive capability which is not known in public domain but parts of it was evident when a big plane like Su30mki dodged all AIM120Cs fired at it from multiple Pak F16s. But what was vectored in to take potshots ? 40 year old jury rigged MiG21s with a result of 1:1 . In case of Tejas Mk1A , entire result will surprise the rivals.
JF17s meanwhile will still turn tails dropping payloads rapidly.

@Joe_2347 If the LCA Tejas is not intended for combat beyond its current capabilities, it could be repurposed as a remote-controlled fighter aircraft for children's play. However, by the time Tejas MK2 is ready, we may see the induction of 5th generation fighter jets like the Pak Turk joint venture KAAN or the fruition of Project Azm.

Incorrect analysis. J 10 uses air cooled inferior AESA with lower power consumption. LCA uses batter Isreali AESA. Uttam is going to be even batter. LCA's RCS is further reduced in MK1A. LCA can see J10 at 100 to 110 km and fire Astra Mk1 A or I derby. J 10 can not see LCA beyond 70 km. More over any missile used by India is far superior to Chinese PL 15 and PL 10. Be it I Derby, R 37, Mica , ASRAAM or python V. LCA has batter maneuverability.
Only J10 C has advantage against LCA in dog fight because of TVC. In BVR, Tejas will win in all scenario. In close combat Tejas will win against J10 A and J10 B. J10 C will have advantage in dog fight.

Tejas radar is small moreover engine is not so powerful to power radar to its full potential. Because J-10 baseline fighter of China and Tejas is baseline fighter of India.
Performance of j-10 c engine is not good so their radars and electronics not get enough power.

Thank you for an honest evaluation rather than just saying that everything Indian is "the best in the world!" (as DRDO always claims). Many people mistake claiming Indian stuff to be the best as a form of patriotism: it isn't. If anything, living in a fool's paradise will hurt us, not help us.
Every company markets its product as best. It's necessary to support and build confidence for indigenous product so their is enough public support for indigenous production, thus it's okay to associate with pride, especially for country like ours, which has suffered so much to break its self esteem.

At max we should give additional 36-72 order for Rafales, and save the money there to invest it in Tejas mkII & AMCA projects.. everytime due to such foreign acquisitions our own excellent projects remain dead... if we commit for 90 more Rafales, then forget abt Tejas mk II & AMCA... it will cause severe delays, as we'll be paying the French untill 2035 and not enough funds will be left for our own Tejas... With mig 21 we shot f16 which is dad of j10 and that mig 21 had not ew pod he he got shot others who had el8222 survived(su 30) so tejas mk1a is much better than mig21 bison and j10 is inferior to f16 so tejas also has advantage, aspj will render their missiles useless as el8222 did,( completely misguided the barrage of AMRAAMS which was fired on su 30
