  • Indigenously developed Light Combat Aircraft (LCA) Tejas on Wednesday successfully test-fired an indigenously developed ASTRA beyond visual range (BVR) air-to-air missile off the coast of Goa.
    According to defence ministry officials, the missile release was successfully carried out from the aircraft at an altitude of about 20,000 feet and all the objectives of the test were achieved with a perfect launch.

    Composite airframe causing low radar cross section, lighter weight and low maintenance, electronic warfare, in flight refueling, bvr missiles, all axis fly by wire control system, highly reliable and efficient ge f404 engine. All these make it amongst the best aircrafts in small category.
    The biggest advantage of Tejas for India is the development of local manufacturing capabilities in the industry and the generation of skilled manpower and such jobs.
    It’s apt that IAF has realized the value and performance statistics of the Tejas squadrons and started putting faith in the indigenous product
    The govt of Mr. Modi has played active role in ironing out the differences between the armed forces and DRDO scientists. It’s important to mention that previous rm late mr. Parrikar was instrumental in getting the IAF to accept the Tejas by promising incremental improvements with the mk1a variant. Otherwise the previous ten years of congress regime were disastrous for every military procurement and had virtually killed the Tejas program

      Best thing about the Tejas is that unlike foreign aircraft where there is little further improvements on the plane once it's sold (except for exorbitantly priced 💰 upgrade packages), the Tejas is being constantly improved and evolved ⚙️.
      The recent addition of an EW pod to give these planes the capability of F-18 Growlers is one more addition to its layer of armor. Likewise the FLIR 🌃 and optical 👁️ tracking nose 🐽 mounted piece.
      Every improvement in Tejas adds to AMCA where the technologies and concepts are proven out.

    After reading some comments and responses , i see there are two sides of opinion. Here are my points of view
    The Tejas was designed in the 80 or 90, and it wasn't taking the first test flight. Many of the designs are outdated.
    True is f35 has some chinese parts , but is not critical. But the tejas engine, radar flight control, and most of the critical parts are from foreign countries. Buyers well beware of it.
    But most importantly, it is the price, it costs almost as same as the f35.

  • @gt9003
    @gt9003 4 місяці тому

    So long as tejas continues as a single engine fighter jet, neither IAF nor any foreign air forces will be much keen about it. And as far as light combat aircrafts are concerned, there are better options in the international markets. Take a note of the US air force, or the Russian air force, neither of them have a single engine jet fighter in their squads. Soon, with the advent of 6th gen fighter air craft, the scenario will change even more drastically. Use of High Altitude Long Endurance armed drones anyway already adds a new dimension to use of aerial platform for defence as well as attack. Therefore, Tejas MKII may make only limted sense. India should pay greater attention to increasing the fleet size of Sukhoi 30s and Rafales. India is a laggard as far as developing and manufacturing capacity of capable armed drones are concerned. The need to address this is more crucial than getting emotional about Tejas MKII, especially since India has not yet been able to negotiate a deal for GE f414 engines and it's own Kaveri engine is years away from successful development.

    Good points raised by both test pilots. India is still way behind and slow; why have Mark 2 when a stealth AMCA is needed. And why do we always build small; be it single engine or smaller tonnage of aircraft carrier. Another important aspect is design and I don’t think Indian aerospace engineers are creative or innovative but get inspiration from French and US designs of the past. No wonder Tejas looks like an obsolete 1970’s design. HAL needs to hire creative and innovative designers who will need work with other engineers to come up with modern and optimal stealth design rather than getting inspired by copying the F-22 or F-35 designs like the Chinese

    • @Kevindecosta
      @Kevindecosta 10 місяців тому +4

      To come up with original designs, one has to invest heavily in basic R & D in aerospace. NASA spends billions in basic R & D in aerospace, everything from structures to advanced air fighting technologies are researched and then passed on to private firms that use them to develop products.
      We are yet not that rich to spend money like US. The only way is to copy the designs.
      Remember that the LCA as it exists is way better than Mig-21 that it is replacing.

    • @okee7
      @okee7 10 місяців тому

      @@Kevindecosta no doubt India can never match the behemoth American military industrial capacity or the innovation coming from NASA or DARPA, but the most obvious weakness or lack of focus amongst governmental organizations like DRDO, HAL, ADA etc is in 'hardware design'. May be selection process of engineers, technical staff etc is the same old traditional method with with focus on just academic qualification or degree. With little emphasis on creativity or capacity to think out of the box; not just the regular task of problem solving in other areas of avionics, software, engine, weapons suite etc. No wonder then, they resort to copying past or prevailing designs from France, US etc. I must emphasize, that by futuristic design I don't mean just aesthetics but efficient hardware for improved performance and better stealth characteristics. I doubt governmental organizations will change their ways for few more decades and the only hope is private enterprise who can the focus on hardware design or product engineering along with other aspects engineering if India wants to make great fighters.

      @rayjynx 10 місяців тому +2

      you seem naive, but that's not a problem, i will explain. mk2 will be a medium weight fighter, sort of in the same class as rafale (although more comparable to gripen since single engine and all). these are the jets that will eventually replace tejas mk1, with that being reduced to a trainer aircraft (possibly). 5th gen jets have huge operating and maintenance costs associated with them and they wont see much action in their lifetime. they will work mainly as a deterrent. the actual workhorses will be the medium-heavy weight fighters (rafale, su30, f15 etc). so it doesnt make sense to scrap all jets to replace them with 5th gen ones. we need something to actually work and fight and not sit around in the hangar. hopefully hal and iaf have planned a dual engine variant of mk2, so that it can compete with rafale.
      now about design and inspiration, copying will definitely be needed, we are way behind since we started very late. and if we now build and research everything from scratch it will take a long time and a lot of money, in short it will be impractical. tejas looks fine, the design isnt outdated by any means, it fits right in with many modern jets operating today. theres only so much you can do in terms of creativity without messing up the aircraft's aerodynamic performance, which is why many modern 5th gen fighter programs have designs which look similar to f22, since that is a design US came up with after spending tons of money in R&D, and it's the most optimal and practical design for jets of this category.

    If not, start charging European prices for the Astra missiles.

All with continuous thundering music. Such a juvenile, pathetic, nothing-substantive-or-intellectual-or-insightful-to-say-so-just-rely-on-bombastic-words-and-music program presented by a loud-mouthed, silly, laughable presenter. These types of things give India a bad name, makes it a laughing stock of the world and nullifies all the good done by substantive accomplishments of quality institutions (of which India has very few, btw) like ISRO.

      Developing a modern fighter and integrated weapons package is more complex than landing on the moon.
      This of course includes the engine development which has so far proven hard.

      @@mth469 Yes, developing a reliable and fuel efficient jet engine is clearly much more challenging than developing a rocket engine that India has mastered. Indians have the brains to do it. DRDO should hire top notch people in engine development area such as tribology, metallurgy, CFD, combustion, etc. to work on Kavery development. The team should consist of young people with PhDs done under top experts in the field. Then give them enough freedom and resources to work on the project. It is possible in Modi era. I hope they are doing it.

    LCA Tejas was promised at a cost of about 25 million 'USD per aircraft. the recent 108 order that has been placed is at nearly 70 million USD or 550 Cr per aircraft. cost overrun is crazy. also the 3rd production line of Tejas is still "coming soon". the current production rate is about 15 aircraft per year, which is minuscule compared to the 250 aircraft that IAF needs right now. at the current rate it will take 15-20 years to fill the IAF's requirement.
    tejas' engine is American, radar is Israeli, avionics are from various countries, helmet display is imported. bottomline the key components are not indigenous. to call Tejas an indigenous aircraft is like calling Toyota and Indian car. it simply isn't. end of the day Tejas has been a flop. in contrast the missile programs like Agni / Prithvi, Brahmos, astra etc have been far more successful. 2 defence programs of India which have drained tax money and delivered little to none are Tejas and Arjun. both should be scraped and should be handed over to the private sector. private companies will deliver quality and quantity and competitive prices as opposed to the government owned PSUs.

      Listen Mr "intellect", i will only explain once -
      25 mil$ per fighter? What is this? Some footpath toy fighter? is it a joke?
      The cost of Tejas mk1A as of 2021 is 42 mil$ fly away. This is the lowest price among its competitors. Its nearest competitors like Gripen C costs 60mil$ or JF17 Block III costs around 45mil$. Larger twin engine fighters like Rafale FR3 cost 110mil$+.
      Production capacity is directly proportionate to the orders placed. From 2024 it will be 16 a year with 83 Tejas mk1A on order. It will be taken over 25+ per year if additional 97 Tejas mk1A orders are placed.
      Is Toyota designed by India ? No? Then its not an Indian car. A complex fighter like Tejas is designed by India. Hence its Indian. Understand the meaning of the term.
      Missiles like Agni/Prithvi were developed more efficiently, because there are no foreign alternatives to that. Nor are there foreign companies trying to sabotage the program. Tejas faced multiple sabotage attempts from European and Russian firms, while Arjun faced sabotage from Russian T90s makers. They didn wanna lose their biggest export market. An advanced fighter like Tejas should have had an order of 100+ before 2010 itself. This would have ensured smooth and high rate production starting from 2011. Never the less, we are a little late, but in the party now anyway.

      @@rohitb5834 so many falsehoods and exaggerations in your statement. and you resort to name calling. typical strategy of a person who has lost the debate.
      the missile program was heavily sanctioned by the west. in 80s and 90s india could not even import the supercomputers that were necessary to perform the design and calculations because this technology was classified as dual use by the West back then. india did not have the rocket engines either. and post soviet collapse the West pressured Russia ro not provide cryogenic tech to India. despite all those hardships and hurdles the missile programs succeeded.
      in contrast tejas and arjun which were initiatives started at a similar time have delivered little to none.
      compare agni and prithvi which are fully tested, trained, deployed and further upgraded routinely, vs either of the flop projects - tejas and arjun. which projects faced hurdles? which projects consumed the most tax money? which projects have delivered?
      look at it unemotionally. don't be a blind tejas fanboy.
      further as of today drones are the way to go because they are cheaper and dispensable as compared to manned fighters. and given long range missiles you can now launch attacks from much bigger bombers from far away regardless of manueverability or radar foot print. by the time tejas becomes available it will be a waste and superceded. bottomline, tejas is a total waste.

      @@marutanray lol you completely defected from the topic.
      I will say it one last time - There were no alternatives to missiles like Agni/Prithvi. Just like you said in fact, India had to develop and induct them and improve them overtime and now we have a matured and one of the best IRBMs/ICBMs in the world.
      Tejas on the other hand was another fine war machine which was ready for induction in 2011. The IAF/Govt. babus in the MOD instead kept delaying it so that they can fill their pockets with bribes that come along with foreign fighters. Never the less, there was light at the end of the tunnel and now with the large Tejas orders it will be the backbone of the IAF for decades to come.
      Arjun, another fine machine was ready by 2005. The Ruskies saw it as a threat and paid huge bribes to limit Arjun induction and continue T90s supply. After DRDO's repeated attempts, finally Arjun was pitched against the T90s in a trial in 2010. Arjun thrashed the T90s in every parameter.
      However instead of ordering more Arjuns, the army said they liked it and wanted to work on the Arjun mk1A, meanwhile ordering more T90s. Now another order of 118 Arjun mk1As are placed, taking the total order to 242.
      Also, i just read your last line just now, and realized u have no idea about Aeriel warfare. Have a good day.
