One of the young women murdered was the fiance of a police officer. When he was called to the scene his colleagues had to take him away as they realised who she was. She was shopping for her wedding make up, having just bought her dress recently. It's so sad for so many people.

it's worth mentioning that the security guard was a refuge who'd fled danger in Pakistan. This man had recently arrived to Australia, and it's been said by many that he helped elderly people as well as the wider community. He was relieved to be away from the danger back home, and excited to settle down and start a family in Australia. He had no weapon on him, and ambushed the attacker with his bare hands in a bid to protect the shoppers.
Poor man, tragic for him and for the other unsuspecting people.
Now, their families have to deal with the shock and loss.

When I first joined the NSW Ambulance 40 years ago for about the first 10 years, mental health patients were scheduled and treated in mental health hospitals. Then, these facilities closed, and mental health patients were and are still on the streets. The majority of homeless people you see have mental illness.
We have several mental health facilities under the misguided Forensic Hospital. Some individuals fight for years to be released from Forensic Hospital. If you kill someone you may get 20 years and then get your freedom back. Patients in forensic hospitals may be there for the rest of their life. Homeless individuals, fortunate to have their freedom, risk losing it entirely if they enter a mental health facility, as they may never be released. Our society is really messed up.
Because our politics gives Israel billions of dollars every yr and and Ukraine government millions of dollars to that's where our money goes even CEO gets pay rise and bonuses every yr

I work in social housing and it has become the new mental health hospitals. People with severe MH live there, terrorising their neighbours and medication intake is voluntary. Then they find other MH people, have kids, abuse them and kids have even worse MH due to abuse + genetics. It's a disaster.
@@friendship9904 Ukraine received $150 billion in aid in 2 years. USA has 650k or so homeless. If you divide $150 billion, EACH AND EVERY homeless person in USA gets $230k USD!!! Homelessness could have been resolved but all the money is going to create more pain and misery and ukraine will lose, it's only a matter or time. $150b spent for nothing but to feed corrupt politicians all across the world and cause deaths!
Seeing this happen at my local Westfield, in stores I have visited countless times throughout my life, has really shed a light on just how fickle life can be. Those poor victims were in exactly the wrong place at precisely the wrong moment. Our community is devastated by this senseless tragedy 💔

I have a friend who has severe anxiety. Whenever a bunch of us girls would go out to eat, she would say things like “Someone could come in here with a gun and kill us all.” We would tell her that we were safe and that wasn’t going to happen. Anymore, I find myself thinking that she has a point.
I now live in the Central West of NSW but 22 years ago I had to frequent a Specialist Orthopaedic Surgeon near there for a Workers Compensation injury I sustained. I used to look forward to going to the BJ Westfield to buy specially cheese and Godiva chocolates. I don't think I'd probably recognise the place now but I always had good memories of the place, but no more. I feel very sorry for the victims, their families, those who were working in the centre at the time and the other shoppers who will consider themselves fortunate that they got to go home. I think of all the victims, innocent as they were, we are all thinking of the baby of Ashley Good and how can a person stab a baby? I have a daughter who is 38 next month and thinking of all the years that Ashley had in front of her with her little girl, who will now grow up without her mum, is senseless and wrong!. We can't even say that it won't happen again because it likely will somewhere else and at some other time! Take care now and if you need to talk to someone do so!

@@oneminuteofmyday Actually she doesn’t. The statistics on one’s chances of dying in a random mass attack is almost 0. I can sympathize with individuals with severe OCD but the last thing any of us should do is validate their irrational fears.

I'm extremely shocked and heartbroken for the horrible event at Bondi Junction and the Assyrian Church on Monday but I'm not living in fear.
Both are very sad occurrences which I wish never happened, but I also know that we always learn by these events and changes will be made!

We use unexpected events to make improvements. I can see there will be changes in security levels and more preparation for events like these.
I'm surprised that there weren't more security guards around.
I know I live in South Australia, but our local shopping centre has security guards who are very obvious, and carry pistols, ever since a woman was murdered on site about ten or so years ago.
They are unmistakable! They are big tough looking guys wearing black uniforms that move around the centre constantly, that looks like they wouldn't hurt a butterfly, but I know would react in a second if necessary
I'd rather live in Australia than the USA, so it's funny to hear that the US has put a travel warning on Australi 😂. Hilarious, the country that seems to have single shootings and mass killings every week is afraid of Australia 🦘🐨. How odd 🤔

Aussie here too 👍 You cannot live in fear it is not healthy for your well being or for your own mental health. Also if you have children they too pick up on the fear and it will cause them emotional anxiety and depression. Unfortunately this horrific incident was unforeseen. Australia is a safer country than many other countries when it comes to mass murders. Australia is Big Brother, and that’s a fact. Australia has strict gun laws which in hindsight is a good thing.
Go out and enjoy your life as much as you can, life goes on.

He stabbed the baby in the pram before stabbing her mother so it seems like he was going towards what he felt were the most vulnerable targeted and they were women. The man who was killed was a security gaurd trying to stop him.

I suffer from schizophrenia and I am a very peaceful person. I take my meds and go and take a shot every three weeks. However I have woken up in the mental ward a couple of times without knowing how I got there. Schizophrenia is very serious. You have to stay on your meds and have continuous treatment. When I first had an episode I thought angels were talking to me I had no idea what was going on.

My aunt had schizophrenia and was a peaceful, kind-hearted person. If she were alive, she would be horrified to hear of this tragedy.

@@TesterAnimal1 trust me I still question things it just seemed so unbelievable to be angels now that I doubt myself that it was just me hearing things. I sat in my bathroom all night talking to them asking questions it was surreal.

I'm not sure that is a good idea, unless the man himself wants his name to be known. Because when your name is out there, it will be known to malicious people as well.
Public shaming is never appropriate because the crowd never has a true balanced perspective. The crowd = the heard. Its a safe rule to never take any side, but especially the side of the crowd.

His father was interviewed on TV here in Australia - he was very distressed as he recalled how he had dedicated his life to trying to get adequate and appropriate help for his son. Our mental health system here in Australia leaves a lot to be desired.

You cannot force someone to undergo treatment for mental or physical health issues unless a doctor or the police have assessed him as presenting as a danger to himself or others

And those female reports for 9 News all trembling and crying for the mother victims is such a turn off. We all feel and know it's very sad situation. Just be professional and present the facts and get the job done. As is the other news they don't seem to be able to present a story objectively. They can't help but push their very subjective opinions on you.

Aside from the male security guard who attempted to stop the attack, the targets were female.
It's ironic that so many people assumed the attacker would be Muslim.... but the security guard who tried to stop him was Muslim.

The police have to consider all options and a mass murder isn't normal behaviour. No idealogical motive was identified and this may be partly why. He was clearly looking for easy targets because when confronted by a husband squared up to protect his family, he bypassed the man.

Meth is a massive issue in Australia, and mental health services are so difficult to access with huge waiting times. Ironically, if he had lived, he would receive faster psychiatric care in prison.

The aussie mental health system is severely out dated and run by boomers. Chances are like most of them he went nuts from the treatment. The guy wasn't a spaz and was smart and socialable when younger. Did they give him anti depressants and the side effects made him a fruit loop? Seen it happen before, but they blame the weed typically.
You even get put on hold when you call life-line, we have a serious problem in this country 😔

It is so sad that this awful situation came about. Lack of support by successive Australian federal and state governments for mental health facilities and treatment is the reason why this has happened. Joel came from a loving, caring, hard-working family and was highly intelligent, he did really well throughout school and university but when his psychiatrist decided to cut back on his medications a few years ago, that was the beginning of his alienation from society and associated troubles. Joel’s family and friends are devastated and will forever live with the horror of what their son has done. So many victims, so much pain which affects hundreds of lives. The blame can be laid squarely at the Australian government’s health sector, which has de-prioritised mental health facilities and treatments for decades.
It appears he did his best to improve. Perhaps regular visits to a behavioral therapist could help him further. His father even took time off to care for him, suggesting that those who know him have done their utmost to support him. It's a truly unfortunate and unpredictable situation.
Dr Grande our entire country is heartbroken. There’s not an Australian who’s not grieving for the people who lost their lives in this senseless attack. The place this happened is a beautiful, safe (we thought) and family centric community.

I'm from Melbourne and live on the Gold Coast, but love Sydney and have been going to Bondi Junction since 1998. My partner also used to live 2 blocks from there, and last November, we visited Sydney and ate a lovely brunch at a cafe right near the end of the street that looks towards the entrances to the Westfield. It feels so weird to keep seeing that cafe and street view on TV. I still love the area, and I still love Sydney. The fact that so many people helped, were so brave and heroic, and that SO many people are so distressed and shocked by this just shows that this is NOT normal, NOT acceptable and there are thousands more GOOD people out there than the people who do these horrendous things.

This guy went to my high school it’s honestly heartbreaking all round 😢Schizophrenia is a horrible disorder to have. I have a friend I went to school with that also has it he was also diagnosed as a teen and this is every families worst nightmare come true that have a loved one with it. My heart goes out to all the families including his ❤
Agree 💯%. See all of my comments above. It is certainly a nightmare for the sufferer and his family, and it has to be managed. A family with a son or daughter suffering from this terrible mental disease must learn how to manage it as well as possible or the outcome can be disastrous, like this tragedy here. There are meds and doctors available - use them. Take the time to accompany your family member to his/her appointments and make sure they take their medication. There are 'slow-release' anti-psychitic injections available. Find out about them. There are clinics & institutions with their doors & arms open to help. Use them. Don't let mental illness cause tragedy on the streets. Love your afflicted ones enough to help them.
@@Faristol7I absolutely agree! Unfortunately the town that we are both from have closed down our mental health hospital and getting help here is hard. He did stop taking his meds and his parents did everything they could do. They even had him living with them and they were monitoring his medication. Unfortunately he is 40 yrs old he moved state and they could only do so much. They tried to get him help here and with the mental hospital closed it’s very hard. The hospital was great especially when it came to them being non compliant when taking their meds.
My friend has the injections and his lovely wife takes him to go and get them once a month. He had stopped taking them at one stage when he was younger and also by choice ended up homeless so his mum took over like they tried to which lucky in my friends case worked and he was compliant.
Its been reported he was weaned of his medication by Doctors, after that his behaviour became increasingly odd. I had an 82 old neighbour who was schizophrenic. I had regular conversations with this man for 12 years and had no clue he had a mental Health disorder. until his doctor decided he could come off medication after being on it for 40 years. A few months later is wife came to my house frantic because he had chased her out of their home with a knife. He had been having odd behaviors on and off. On that day he believed she was an intruder. It took a police officer & 2 ambulance men to get the knife and restrain him. Sadly he was put in mental health facility where he later died. The look on my neighbours face and in his eyes that day, is very similar to what witness describe about the Sydney man. When I first saw the footage on TV I said to my partner I bet he's schizophrenic. I think mental health in Australia is often poorly managed by Doctors and taking people of medication can be the wrong move.

There were warnings according to his parents. Wasn't he also known to police?
@@angelavolkov1126 his parents didn't say that there were warnings specifically, just that he was sick and off his meds but he had no history of DV or violence and he had no criminal record, he was known to police but not for anything criminal, basically they said that they had some dealings with him but it was just a "move along" type situation, as he was homeless.

Due to their contact with him the QLD police admitted they knew his mental health was decline. EngagIng mental health outreach workers to visit him instead of telling him to just ‘move on might have been in order. A large % of homeless persons have mental health disorders and it’s a case of as long as they are out of site they are out of mind.

As an Australian myself everything keeps going up in price including simple mental health services like medicine and counselling. We're most likely going to have more people who commit acts like this cause they can't access the mental health help they need due to the costs. His parents said he had very poor social skills and couldn't get a girlfriend and they believe this and that's why he went after women specifically. I do think if he'd been able to get help without the costs involved he wouldn't of done this but the government has made mental health services too expensive so the people who desperately need help don't bother even trying to reach out.
Omg, I have cried so many tears over this. It scared the hell outta me, I thought it was my daughter who was one of the dead, their photos are exactly the same, two beautiful blond girls. My eyesight is terrible, and my fone decided to glitch out just as I saw the singleton girl's pic, and for a horrible 20-30 seconds, I thought my eldest daughter was dead
It was the most horrible feeling. But then I cried when I thought " this was someone's daughter."

Dr Grande, I lived in Bondi for 22 years and it's a relative safe part of town. I never felt in danger at night time in the Junction at the bars, let alone during the day shopping at Westfields. It goes to show that violence is unpredictable now wherever you may be. This is truly tragic and shocking. My thoughts and condolences go out to the family and friends of the victims.
This was not a person that could take care of himself. He couldn't hold a job or payed rent ect.He shouldn't have been on his own in the first place.He should have been in some sort of facility.
Possibly. He was renting once in Brisbane, with others I heard. He probably went long periods in ok health. I'd say Sydney was his undoing. It's a very complex situation. So unfortunate.

Such facilities with on going care don't really exist in Australia. You have inpatient units for acutely unwell people (they will usually stay for around 2 weeks), outside of that there are only community care units which is like community respite. The issue is, these community services cannot be forced on people, the only treatment that can be assertively provided is an injectable medication and that's only if they meet the criteria for involuntary treatment under a Mental Health Act. This client was voluntary, homeless and very undertreated for his mental illness.

As I’m sure you’re all reading in the comments, stabbings here in my home State of NSW, and Sydney City itself have been out of control recently. I’m thankful for our law’s and regulations here in Australia, that this man in particular, wasn’t able to obtain anything other than a knife. This shocked not just the local community but the whole state and country. Thank you Dr. Grande for your helpful insights and speculations into these awful tragedy’s.
All I keep thinking is imagine if he had access to a gun. Absolutely devastating situation. We could have had a lot more victims without our gun laws.
I live in Canada. We had a similar (but less lethal) incident in my neighbourhood a few years ago. The man had a gun in his car, but had been unable to buy any ammunition. I was so grateful that he didn’t have access to a gun. It would have been so much worse.

Schizophrenia is scary.
I have heard it described as a nightmare you cannot wake up from. With medication it can be controlled but many stop taking their medication, or won't take it in the first place because they think people are trying to poison them. It's a terrible illness and very sad.

Of course mental health is always to blame when the perpetrator is white. If he was Black, his culture would be blamed, if he was Arab, his religion would be blamed. Its funny how only white killers are individualized and permitted the excuse of mental health for their actions.
One big problem with schizophrenia is that THC exposure particularly at a young age can either cause, increase, or worsen it, and most people are in denial about it's harmful affects.

Cannabis is damaging to the developing brain. And the brain is still developing until around 25-28 years old. Its the Frontal Lobe and Cortex that is the last stage in brain development and that is cognition, reasoning, judgment, critical thinking, intelligence, Executive Functioning, higher mind and metacognition. Someone who has smoked weed since they were a teen will be stunted developmentally at that age. I've seen it first hand with most of the people I know, including my ex and my best mate.
And the reason why weed smokers are so convinced that it doesn't and hasn't caused any issues is simply the result of impaired and damaged cognition. You can't access or even be aware of the damaging effects on cognition if the only means in which you determine that damage is from your own cognition. The arguing defensive weed smoker is an example of stupidity in action.
The data is still inconclusive regarding THC and schizophrenia, but it seems plausible that those affected should not use marijuana or any recreational drugs.
I’ve read literature on thc induced psychosis, it is a huge reach that avoids some essential evidence to the contrary.
Is there research to show it can *cause* it? Worsen, yes, but actually creating it from nothing is not something that I've ever seen in studies.
To me this is incredibly scary. It's a worst nightmare come true. As these crimes are very rare in Australia the whole country is still in shock.

Too many people assume that if someone who suffers from a mental illness acts out violently, the mental illness is to blame. As if people who suffer from mental illness might not also harbor resentments, anger, or believe in violent ideologies. Thank you for this thoughtful, balanced assessment.

It's so easy to blame the mental illness. Yet, women with mental illness rarely resort to domestic terrorism or spree attacks like this.

It happened to one of my clients. On her lunch hour, out of nowhere, a man started to stab her. She was lucky bc she was wearing a heavy winter coat, and it took the brunt of the attack.. Her eyeglasses saved her as he stabbed her in the face. The man was found to be psychotic.

It's a horrible thing to happen and to happen in a place this doesn't usually occur. I'm in the US, stuff like this happens very often here except it's usually with semi-automatic guns and twice as many injured or killed it's extremely terrifying. I go to work everyday at a large grocery store chain that this happens country-wise a few times a year, we even have videos we have to watch on what to do in case there's an "active shooter". I don't wish that on any other country to experience for it's citizens and I'd be a happier person if it was a rare occurrence here too.

My first thought when the news broke was how glad I was he couldn’t get his hands on a gun. Bondi is always super crowded and busy and the fact he injured so many people with only a knife makes it chilling to think what he could have done with a firearm. He couldn’t have been pinned in place on the escalator or taken on by a single officer with no backup, that’s for sure.
Things like this happen so rarely here that it’s always a huge shock.

The parents should have made more effort to make sure he was medicated. And not alone & lonely. My schizophrenic son is on serious meds, gets regular visits to the psyche clinic (because we take him, and have done for the past 20 years, lives with us and eats with us at least once a day. It's called 'looking after your mentally ill son so he's not a danger to society or himself. It's hard work, but it has to be done, or this can be the outcome. We watch our son like hawks.

Now before you accuse me of having no idea what I'm talking about I would like you to know that not only have I had plenty of psychiatric nursing experience as an RN over 2 decades but mental illness including schizophrenia, bipolar disorder as well as several of the other mental health conditions such as OCD, anxiety disorder and PTSD run through both my family and my ex husband'I have many memories of visiting clients in their homes, some living independently while others, who were fortunate to HAVE loving family members who COULD care for them, lived with parents who were old before their time. Many individuals will self medicate, not liking the feeling that the medication gives them and dual diagnoses are common. Here in Australia, and I am in NSW where the incident took place having shopped at that Westfield beforehand, I can tell you that the public mental health system is extremely underfunded and there just aren't enough skilled staff even if beds are made available. I have had my own children stay within the private psychiatric hospitals in years gone by, but today with the rising cost of living many people have opted out of private hospital care and cannot access it unless they're rich. Many of the people I used to see lived in housing that was inadequate for their needs and it was the fortunate ones indeed who did have family who were in the position your son is. Unless a person is at imminent threat to himself or others and is over the age of 18 then they are at liberty to move about and travel and live wherever they choose. A parent or caregiver can be charged with assault for preventing the liberty of an individual who doesn't want to stay at the family home or elsewhere with someone. I had a mother, over 20 years ago now, call me desperate for advice on what to do about her 18 year old son who left the family home and neither she nor her husband knew where else to search for him. They'd exhausted all options of where he might be but wasn't. It was a slow night at work and I spoke to that mother for over an hour but I couldn't help. She was concerned that he might have jumped from the Anzac Bridge in Sydney but I never found out what happened with that family. I could be here all day talking about my family alone but I have to go. Your situation is one of MILLIONS and I hope that your son continues to allow him to manage his life as you do and that you remain well enough to do so, but please don't judge the Cauchi family who I'm sure are devastated that their son killed and injured all those people and who is now dead himself! There were bits you missed (not surprising, there is a lot out there), like his ex girlfriend saying he was a good guy and looked after her. He was weaned off his medication by a doctor and his behaviour changed dramatically after that. A man who knew him when he was homeless in QLD saying that he was always very polite.
I don't know if it was the case here, but many people with schizophrenia are prescribed an amphetamine medication and are then taken off it because it's addictive. Problem is, it's so addictive that they go and find the alternative on the street and become meth heads. Things just get worse for them once the meth gets a hold of them. I'm going to be following the enquiry with interest.
Some comments here have already pointed out that all the victims were female, aside from the security officer who confronted him & was subsequently attacked. His father has also gone on record saying his son struggled with romantic relationships. These two factors, combined with the fact that he promoted himself as an escort, in my opinion, point towards the possibility that he was an ‘incel’ or the like, and this was likely the ideology behind the attack
There are thousands of people with mental health conditions that struggle with obtaining and holding onto an intimate relationship or even persons friendships - that doesn’t make them incels - they are just very socially isolated.
Drop the incel crap. There are millions of men who are starved of relationship but very few go on a women-killing rampage. There's also no evidence he was part of any online incel community. Just stop it.

Honestly I think we see a lot of mini snaps all the time. I think many of the Karen incidents are people schizophrenic or other delusional disorder. I wish there was a way to report it as a mental health problem to get the person under control BEFORE they do worse.

That is not true. If you find yourself in a position like that you wouldn't carry around a sharp blade. You would structure your life around the failure of your mental health landing you in a cushioned area with all your basic needs met. As a society it's our duty to care for those who are disabled. And likewise the person with a situation where they would "snap" if they mess up their medication or can't get prescribed it again, whatever you're talking about, they want to live to see another day and so they will structure their life around being able to survive such an episode. It's the same as how someone with seizures has a dog come with them that can sense they're about to seizure, and cues from the dog makes them lower themselves to the floor quickly and brace for the seizure. Likewise a person whose mental health degradation would cause absolute turmoil to their body/mind, they know that, while they are medicated, and would be trying to figure out how to be able to survive various scenarios involving mental health episodes. For example yes maybe they always make sure their phone is charged and they have multiple ride share apps that at least one will always be able to call a ride share back to some cushiony place they can call home. And this person clearly didn't care about dying and that is not common amongst humans, who famously play the game "don't die" more often than anything else, where you have to make sure you don't die while operating for example, and saving others, it's so so so common, so no, this kind of person is not common and also the kind of person with that kind of problem wouldn't just sharpen knives and have an episode ready to rampage, they would think I want to live another day, and so they wouldn't bring weapons but rather SOLUTIONS to various problems they can encounter. And a medical professional can help them come up with a lifestyle plan, and our governments should pay for this because we can generate so much wealth if we are smart and in a good mind, and those people are heavily taxed and technology/materials are as cheap and mass producible as ever, so some percent of that absolutely can help create social, medical, etc structures. There's gotta be someone there for them to show them they matter and that there really are a number of reasons they should want to live, and it might be hard for them to understand that such connections are always possible in at least some future of theirs. So anyway. It's not common but you should still always be aware of your surroundings. Not saying the victims here weren't, rest in peace. I hope the families and society as a whole can recover from this, it's all super sad this happened at all, that someone not only k*lled themselves but wanted to impart a sadistically torturous situation on others before they left. Sad, yes, but extremely rare, though. Someone who has thoughts about stuff like this needs to open up to medical front staff who take what they say seriously, they will know who you need to talk to and develop plans and systems for you to be able to win yourself and at least have things to always look forward to and future potential rewards despite absolute catastrophe in any current moment.

One of the confounding factors in all of this is the housing crisis that is affecting Australia and particularly Sydney at the moment. Many people are feeling disconnected and many people are being disconnected from their mental health services. Being homeless is also known to further impact mental health conditions and then to have an existing diagnosis, not being able to access mental health supports, it's worrying. From interviews with Mr and Mrs Cauchi (Joel's parents), he was a troubled individual. He started coming off his medication slowly in 2019, at first under medical supervision, but then started sleeping on the streets (or sleeping rough, as we call it here in Australia). It was not able to be supervised by the public health system any further. There are rumours that Joel allegedly scoped out other major shopping centres across Sydney, including one in Parramatta (in Western Sydney, but probably in the geographical middle of Sydney) and one in Penrith, in Outer Western Sydney. I happened to be at the Penrith shopping centre at the time that this attack was taking place and it's chilling to think if he had chosen that one, it could have been me. I am heartbroken that this has happened. I am heartbroken for his parents that seem to be hounded by the media, after watching their son do this and then losing their son as well. And most importantly, I am heartbroken for the victims and their families, as well as everyone that was witness to this awful incident. My one hope is that tragedy will bring more awareness to the housing and mental health crisis that is unfolding and hopefully, with this, a way of working towards tackling these issues.

I have just moved out of Sydney. It has become a city under huge stress with huge numbers of immigrants and not enough reasonably priced housing. Our children are moving interstate because they can't afford to buy or even rentin Sydney. Food has also become extremely expensive. What the media hasnt been saying is that there were at least 3 (maybe 4) separate knife attacks last week culminating in the Bondi mall attacks. The perpetrator had also stopped taking his medication and was apparently using crystal meth. He had nowhere to live in Sydney and the Bondi Junction mall is in the wealthiest part of Sydney. I also wondered if he was frustrated and angry at women because they didn't want him (paid or otherwise). I would say that there was an increasing amount of anger and his mental illness and drug use prevented him from dealing with it appropriately. My heart goes out to all victims but also to his parents who recognised him from the camera footage. I can't imagine what it would be like to realise that your son is the perpetrator of such an appalling attack. By the way, as somebody else has noted, the new week has started with another knife attack.
I always tell my children to be aware of their surroundings, no matter how pacific it seems. Targeting mostly women and a baby... he was a loser till the end!!

Completely agree. I don't feel it takes away their rights at all to care for them when they can't care for themselves. Families can struggle to do it on their own.
I’m old enough to remember how schizophrenics were treated, and it wasn’t pleasant. Many people spent 50 years in a room with limited to no real ‘care’. Now, we have the total opposite and they’re ‘in the community’, again with limited care usually. Neither is ideal. The reality is the public is not ready for the kind of costs that good public mental healthcare would entail.
@HkFinn83 well they certainly need something better than what they have and what they've got now. The small facilities they do have in this country are packed to the rafters with drug users with their self induced psychosis and there's no room for those with proper mental illnesses. I was raised in Epsom and remember the psychiatric cluster hospitals nearby, those patients were just flung out under the guise of 'care in the community' and many returned to closed hospitals not knowing what had just happened. Some people just need a facility and as the population has grown considerably the authorities need these facilities back.

No, I don’t agree. People were murdered throughout the past. We just don’t remember them as vividly . I’m not going to go looking for stats, but here’s an example. My friend, who’s an older lady, her father was shot dead by a 15 year old farm worker when she and her sister were young children. They were in the house at the time. He shot their mother as well, but she survived. I found the court reports, he wanted to see someone die. There have always been murderers and killers, we try to stop them, but sometimes we can’t.

Many don't want to hear this, but you are correct. The Mental Illness safety net does not exist and people like this guy will increasingly act. In most places, there is no place to put these sick people where they can get treatment. Judges are too timid to rule that some need to be treated AGAINST THEIR WILL ! He had a diagnosis for over 20 years, in that time he was never known to police except a random weapons check stop in QLD (in a place they do this regularly). This is more likely to be drugs or drugs + schizophrenia. Schizophrenia on it’s own rarely RARELY leads to danger to random people. Usually it is the person or people close to them that are at risk (if at all).
Nobody had a reason to keep him hospitalised unless he volunteered to be there. He had no previous history of being a danger to himself or others, and there was nobody around him to say if he was having an acute episode or break in order to get him hospitalised. He was under private care before he discontinued it, and everyone has the right to discontinue care from that doctor if they choose. Same with the public system.
There was no duty of care that was breeched. He was a grown man with an illness he stopped treating and had the right to do so. Nobody had cause to think he’d harm anyone. You can’t just lock up or monitor schizophrenic patients with no criminal history or history of violence because they’re schizophrenic.
I’m as shocked and disgusted and devastated by this as all other Aussies but unless more information is released suggesting mental health professionals knew he was a risk leading up to the crime and did nothing the system didn’t fail here.

Apparently he had been seen in the recent weeks prior at several other Westfields. He was planning it. He certainly picked the biggest, most crowded one, particularly as it was a Saturday afternoon and the first day of NSW school holidays. Bondi Junction Westfield is one of the biggest shopping malls in the country.
Or he could have just been shopping and exploring his new city at the other centres. Something just might have triggered him off on this day.

This is shocking and sad. Am not able to go through this tragic incident. Queensland police came to my flat in Brisbane on 7 May 2021 when I was at work as this killer was my flatmate and was shouting in kitchen and the neighbours reported to police thinking its domestic violence but he was frustrated with tray not fitting in fridge. I got used to his mood swings in the flat knowing about him as I knew his shouting is normal and weird behaviour as he had mental illness. As his flatmate for nearly 1.5 years two years ago (Sep 2020-Mar 2022) in Kangaroo Point, Brisbane it was very hard to live with him as he had difficulty to process what was told to him and I would lose patience at times trying to explain how to keep things clean in kitchen as all flatmates used it. Sometimes he was nice and would cooperate but he had severe mood swings I guess as he was very serious other times, mostly avoided direct eye contact while talking, twitching his body, head, waving arms randomly and shouting in air but never to any of us in the flat. That's why I avoided the kitchen when he was using knives as he was unpredictable and it was scary sometimes listening to his screams from his room just next to my room, and played loud music. I saw the police reports to journalists and media channels speaking on this but most of them don't know about his true nature on daily behaviour which only closed ones like his family and flatmates like me know of him. I saw him get a east Asian girl to the apartment when he was my flatmate with few others. I was surprised he got a girl and wondered how she is able to be with him because he had no social skills as his father said. Maybe she was a casual fling or girlfriend for short while, I never asked him. It was very hard to communicate basic things like to clean the kitchen after using. Since I knew he has mental illness I was soft spoken most of the times but was stern few times. On Sunday morning my ex flatmate sent me a 9news post on instagram asking me if I remember him as we both shared the flat with him and we knew he had mental illness and was hard to live with but we had to adjust knowing his illness but didnt expect he would do this heinous act previous evening harming innocent lives even baby and killing many people mainly ladies, what a tragedy. Its unbearable to digest for me. Psychiatrist Dr Ahmed Tanveer told 7news that even he dont know what goes on in the minds of this man as its unpredictable because of his playful nature at times but violence could be drug induced and not just mental illness. Prayers to all the people who are badly affected by his violence and hope their families have strength to go through this tough phase. PEOPLE SHOULD STOP TARGETING A COMMUNITY BASED ON RELIGION, RACE, NATIONALITY, SKIN COLOUR, whatever what a sick mentality people have spreading hatred and fake news.

So dispiriting knowing many could have led much better lives and their families could have been freed from constant worry and fear. His mental health and potential drug use (we’ll have to wait for a toxicology report to see if that was the case) were definitely big factors, but it does seem like there’s high probability there was still some specificity to who he decided to stab. There’s cctv footage where he’s completely disinterested in pursuing male victims despite their close proximity to him.
Additionally, Joel’s father has said in an interview he believes it wasn’t random that the people murdered were all young females (with the exception of the security guard who died trying to stop him) as Joel had a LOT of grievances about his inability to get a girlfriend.
While it’s only conjecture, even targeting a young woman and her baby could still be related to this resentment over what not having a relationship denied him access to.
But irrespective of the “why” the killer did what he did, I REALLY hope this tragedy is reflected upon by the Australian authorities as it’s a perfect example of why unarmed security guards can’t keep people safe (two were stabbed and one of them sadly died) so at the very least we need security guards to have pepper spray and/or tasers, it could’ve truly save lives (including their own) if the security guards actually had the necessary items to do the job they were hired for.
Security guards are a joke here though, they have about two days of training via videos and are often not given a background check. I have worked adjacent with a lot at events and would not want them to be armed. I also read that this particular guard was on his first day of the job, I doubt he would have immediately fired off a weapon. Still, I have a major respect for him for trying and RIP.
Yeah, if it were mental health, then we'd see women do this too.

- He clearly wanted sex (due to the escort profiles)
- He's a decent-looking guy, he probably got looks from girls but was always rejected (due to his personality) when he tried to date them. That's a big cause of incel rage... believe me!

I live at Bondi Junction and as a woman I now feel so anxious. I’m trying to avoid doing my food shop at the junction as it’s triggering. My friend was in LuLuLemon and heard the woman get stabbed and ran and hid, she’s traumatised just from hearing the screams.

I grew up in Toowoomba the same time as Joel, one suburb away.. we must have crossed paths and known the same people. The place was… awful. A type of rough I can’t explain. I couldn’t wait to get out. I’m very sad and sorry this happened.
I just watched an interview with Joel's father where he disclosed that his son somehow found a "Doctor" that worked with him to wean him of his medication (SMH). This (predictably) resulted in a noticeable worsening of Joel's condition and (according to his father) precipitated his decision to randomly/spontaneously leave his family's small rural town for the city of Brisbane before he then decided to tragically make his way to Sydney (a journey of approx 1000km) where he committed his crime....😢
PS IMO whatever quack "doctor" weaned him off his antipsychotic medication one hundred percent has blood on their hands!!! 😤
Our mental health system failed this man. Australian mental health services need an overhaul.
It's not that bad. I have mental health. C-pstd and other problems. The help is there if you want it. He needed a strategic support system and meds obviously. He would have had to of been locked up.
My mother was schizophrenic. Went into hospital and was on meds all her life.

I am from Australia amd have schizophrenia and I agree, but a support network also helps and it seems his parents and family were not supportive and took no respnsibility for his life or death. They could have stopped him from being homeless and could have kept an eye on him, instead of letting him fend for himself.
Maybe if they had employed more mental health professionals they could have prevented this.

I was there as it’s very close to my home. I left minutes prior to this savage attack. My heart is with all of the families. Things like this don’t happen in Australia so it’s a huge shock for the community. There is no funding for psychiatric services so if you don’t have money you don’t get to see a psychiatrist for help. Nothing is justifiable for this kind of act. I wish we had better help to mental health professionals. Psychiatrists charge on average $650 per hour and the waiting lists are six months. That is if you can afford it. This is a horrific event and we need to improve the mental health system in Australia.
This was a very well-presented and respectful video regarding a very distressing incident that is hard to process. It's a very tragic situation, particularly for the innocent victims.
Unfortunately this offender had numerous issues that weren't addressed. The social isolation and lack of emotional connection has tipped him over the edge. It's too late for him and the victims now, but hopefully this tragedy will prompt others who know people who are obviously struggling, to support and help them receive the help they urgently need. Too many people fall through the cracks and are just left to fend for themselves, often with tragic consequences. 💔
