Not only do I remember this series it is one of my top ten of all time. Just a well developed space opera/adventure with fully formed characters we care about. He even devotes an issue to giving backstory to the main villain and why he turned out so bad. The first series I remember planting things in one issue and having them pay off 20 issues later. Speaking of which, I would warn people - Omar inadvertently gives away two HUGE spoilers starting at 9:14-9:30. The fate of one character and the reveal of the traitor that we have been worrying about since issue 10.
DAMNIT I haven't even read past the first few issues yet. :/ Now I cant view my video until I do.
Crazy how Jim's last name is "Starlin", and he goes on to become arguably the best known cosmic writer in comics history.
You said it, brother.
I'm so happy that you did this overview, my copy is arriving next week I think. I passed on the Kickstarter because it was too expensive.
It's a great set, you'll enjoy it.
I just ordered my set today! May I ask what you paid?
@@bcash1994 30 $.
Randomly found this overview. Been picking up individual back issues, but this is great. Covering all of Starlin's run, and most of the whole series. Now I have to order it. Thanks Omar.
I got mine via kickstarter campaign. Amazing set, Jim Starlin’s masterpiece. 😎👍
But sadly I’m not a big fan of the Peter David’s run. Bad characterizations and weak storyline.
Very cool
This vid just made me so freaking jealous! Awesome pick up dude, what a rad set of books!
Thanks a ton! Keep an eye on Amazon Germany and Italy. They have a huge sale there.
Like 8 years ago, I read issues 1 through 33 and I enjoyed them a lot. And last year, I think November or December, I found the remaining issues, for a $1 a piece. The run goes up to issue 64. (Two more of those omnis and you finish off, Peter David's and Angel Medina's run.) It's kind of funny to see this video, cause of these times of social distancing this is what I've been reading. Today around 5 in the morning, I read issues 50-53, I couldn't put it down, it was that good. I have 11 issues more to go, (I might finish it today). And here in the afternoon I find this video. Nice 😊. Keep up the good work and stay safe.
Thank you, hermano. You stay healthy and safe out there too. I really hope they collect the David and Medina run sometime.
Dreadstar Rules
Jim Starlin is my favorite writer. Sold my old hardcovers of Dreadstar in hopes of getting this! Thanks for the review!
Very welcome and thank you for watching.
Bought and received from Amazon Italy for a sweet price.
Very nice!
FreakyFraser1
Dude got a link to that?
Sorry dude.....looks like they're out of stock and pulled the listing. When I go to my order and try to repurchase it says 'no longer available'
Just bought yesterday from Amazon germany for a sweet price too...aaand now its down again...first time us europeans got a sweet deal(even if it was a mistake)
How sweet of a price?
Thanks for the informative review. I don't care about dust jackets.
No worries!
No, Metamorphosis Odyssey was first released in the first epic Illustrated magazine.
Dreadstar by Starlin is so cool! Really happy to see that is finally full reprinted xD One of the best sci-fi things that i've ever read!
Yes!
Omar, you have a, ahem, "uncanny" ability to make me want books that weren't on my radar before. Lol, but seriously this is a beautiful box set and I love Jim Starlin. I just promised myself I would stick to mainly X-Men for 2020.
Stick to those X-men, my brother.
I did read all the Dreadstar issues that Starlin did the art on - even though he kept writing it after giving the art to someone else, I stopped, because half the fun was his art. I picked it up again when Peter David started writing it, and Angel Media was on art - those issues were great, and just as good (if not better) than the Starlin issues.
I really hope they continue with David's run.
Backed this on Kickstarter as an early bird backer for a great price. Glad it's becoming more widely available!
Same here!
Hi, man. I'm from Brazil and I just love dreadstar so I'm going to buy this incredible omnibus. Thanks for this video ☺
Thank you so much for watching
Oh man this is hella gorgeous! Just a little bit taller and a whole lot better than Heroes in Crisis
LOTS! :)
Aaaaaaaaand it's ordered
I need this.
I mean, it is Starlin.
What... what the hell is a dreadstar?!?
This is beyond random... I love it.
This IS Dreadstar!
Damn it Omar, now I want this. Does this contain all of the Starlin issues? I've only read a little bit of Metamorphosis Odyssey in some old issues of Epic Illustrated I stumbled on at a smoke shop years ago.
It includes all of the Starlin saga, not the Peter David stuff.
@@NearMintCondition Thanks chief!
Cool! I also just received mine from Amazon.DE as well. However, my slipcase was damaged. But, i am not going to return it for the low price i paid for it.
Oh no! Yeah I took a gamble from overseas too.
toni dee
I've looked but I can't seem to find it, got a link to the page? Or please let me know what search you used, I've tried sent variations with no luck.
I have it all in single issues, NM!! a classic
Very awesome, hermano.
I can’t thank you enough for this. I’ve been wanting it but I was worried about the production quality, which needs to be awesome if I’m going to throw down $300.
Thank you so much for taking the time to watch the video and leave a comment.
Cloak and Dagger omnibus cameo. Looking forward to that video
It will be out for sure. :)
I don't know what the hell a Dreadstar is but that slip case packaging reminds me of VHS tapes!
You leave VHS tapes out of this! :) I miss mine.
In the 1980s, Marvel's Epic imprint was having a lot of success with Groo the Wanderer and Elfquest as newsstand distributed titles, so they introduced Dreadstar and Company as a six issue newsstand reprint of Dreadstar #1-6. All three newsstand Epics were printed on newsprint and sold at the same price as licensed comics like GI Joe. The main Dreadstar comic was printed on higher quality Baxter paper stock and cost twice what a normal Marvel title ran at the time.
I was a big fan of Groo. Hoping one day we get a collection.
Dreadstar!!!! LOL I'm getting this one!!!
My man!
Omar, thanks for the video! The graphic quality from volume 2 & 3 seems to be much lower than the first. Do you agree?
Yeah. I do. It was the scan quality.
I saw the Cloak and Dagger omnibus in the background, can you please share both covers if you're allowed
If I have them both. For sure. I will be doing an overview of that next week.
I have every issue of the original ongoing series…apart from #28
Looks very interesting. I'm a sucker for any book in a box lol
How about a top 10 favorite writers or artists? Would love to see your take on that!
You got it. Thank you so much for your suggestion.
Mine just arrived last week from Germany
Glad you got i.
Wow I’m gonna have to take a look at this series it looks awesome. Hey Omar I’d like to hear your review of dread star when you finish.
Will do! It might take me a while. I am enjoying it so far.
Near Mint Condition Take your time Omar I know thee dread star Omni is pretty huge but when you finally do it’ll be worth the wait.
Dreadstar / Metamorphosis Odyssey started at Marvel in Epic Illustrated # 1. The Price, an OGN which gave us the origin of Syzygy Darlock was published by Eclipse Comics & later reprinted in color by Marvel. The Dreadstar graphic novel was published by Marvel. The ongoing was published by Marvel`s creator owned imprint Epic then moved on to First Comics & later Malibu.
So they did end up at Malibu, I thought the old noggin remembered that.
I had this delivered on Tuesday from Amazon.de for a bargain £34. Had a quick flick through it and it looks really nice. The build quality is really good as well. Looking forward to reading this at some point (although my backlog is huge).
Enjoy it, brother.
How the hell is it so low? That makes absolutely no sense.
@@jeffreydean7556 I'm not sure. It might have been a mistake but all 20 + copies sold in no time at all.
Crazy. I paid $200 USD on Kickstarter for them, lol. Enjoy!
I back the Kickstarter, and yeah a little expensive but I think it was worth it. They threw in some prints and other things. Just regret not getting the slip case.
I think they aer beautiful I hope they do David's run as well.
🤦🏻♂️ I just found two old of my comics of dreadstar still in plastic never opened 🤭2 and 3
First: love your videos. Now, i saw complaints about the quality, thoughts?
The scan in the second volume was a little blurry.
Thanks for another great video. Quick publishing history note: The Price was indeed published by Eclipse, but Eclipse was never part of Marvel.
To complicate things a bit, Eclipse's The Price graphic novel was published in black and white. Then Epic's Dreadstar Annual #1 reprinted The Price, but in color.
As for whether G.I. Joe's Scarlett was based on Willow: Nope. Scarlett appeared five months before Willow in G.I. Joe: A Real American Hero #1, with a June 1982 cover date. Willow made her debut in Dreadstar #1, with a November 1982 cover date.
Oh so all these years I thought Marvel bought Eclipse comics, I'm not sure why I thought this and thank you for the clarification.
@@NearMintCondition Todd McFarlane brought Eclipse Comics. He said he did it to get the rights to continue publishing the Black Terror, a 3 issue mini-series they did; and no connection to the Black Terror of the Golden Age, but nothing ever came of it.
hey omar I ordered two more xmen milestones, the dark Phoenix saga as a place holder for xmen epic vol 7 when that comes out and fatal attraction because the issuses follow right after x - song. I might just try to get all of them if I can. so I don't miss out anything.
Hold out for that volume 7 for sure.
This top 5 indie comics ever made
Yes!
Cuando los pasaréis al español
Thanks Omar! I’m just not sure if the set warrants the $200 as I haven’t read it and don’t have the time; plus I’m gunning for the Dan Scott Silver Surfer omnibus for the same price .
Try to catch it on sale on Amazon. uk
I got this on Kickstarter. $225 for the 3 volumes. The slipcase would have been an extra $75 so i said "Forget that." I was disappointed in the dimensions of the book. You're right that "omnibus" means different things to different publishers but, to most comics readers an omnibus is the size of Marvel and DC's books. I didn't think it unreasonable to expect these books would be the same size.
I backed the Kickstarter too, and they were very clear about the dimensions. I was disappointed they chose that, but they were quite upfront.
@@jeffreydean7556 I missed this. I looked over the Kickstarter page gain to day and I still don't see anything about the dimensions of the book. Where should I be looking?
@@jeffreydean7556 (second request) Where on the Kickstarter did they specify the dimensions? Thanks.
I'm a big fan of Starlin. When is this set coming out @Omar?
Its out already. :)
Epic Illustrated was put out by Marvel Comics and not Eclipse, which was a entirely different company. I know because I have the entire run and it's my favorite anthalogy series. Concerning Dreadstar, I loved the series in Epic but didnt follow up with it in its ongoing comic
Ahhh thank you for clarifying.
Great overview. Think it may be a little overpriced for me otherwise I’d be on this
Thank you so much and if you look on Amazon Italy or Germany they get cheap there.
Near Mint Condition thanks for the tip Omar. You are correct they are much cheaper.
Totally random but do you know how to fix an Omnibus where the binding is intact but the eye is like permanently creased and it’s only held together by the paper? When the book sits on the shelf the actual text block is sagging at an angle in comparison to the actual cover (it’s the 52 omnibus btw). Thanks!
Sadly those 52 omnis have the weirdest binding. I've seen some fall apart. Sadly when it gets that bad, there really isn't much to do to fix.
Near Mint Condition Well that sucks lol time to experiment!
Near Mint Condition I freakin fixed it! Idk how it worked but it did, some McGivering with PVA glue and it’s actually almost perfect now!
Deseando que llegue a España en español y todos los países latinoamericanos ❤
Did you end up reading this? And if so what is your rating of it?
Direct links, please?
Can't seem to find it.
Here is the link , but its cheaper on Amazon Germany.

Near Mint Condition
Yeah, that's the one I was looking for, but thanks.
BTW, how is it Ominous Press able to put this into an Omnibus when the content was originally released by Marvel? Unless Ominous Press is a subsidiary?
Starlin did the series through Marvel’s EPIC line, which allowed creators to retain the rights to their stories and characters. The early parts of this run have been released before by other companies (not Ominous or Marvel) but I don’t think that issues 13-40 have ever been collected anywhere.
It’s a solid series if you like the genre. It begins like a doomsday space opera and shifts to a space war between church and state factions. Starlin’s dialog is a bit simple in spots (it was the early/mid 80’s after all ) but overall with great imagination and storytelling.
Porque no sale en español
Never read this series
I have something that u dont, lol, (atleast I think I do)
:) oh yeah?
This set is amazing but also amazingly overpriced.
If you can still find it overseas through Amazon (Italy or Germany) the price is very reasonable......mine was $82 CAD shipped.
That's crazy. Wonder how it's so low? I paid 300 USD on Kickstarter for it to make sure it happened. You're welcome, lol
Yeah.....thank you I guess lol? No idea how the overseas Amazon sites were blowing it out so low. They didn't even have them.....mine took almost 2 months to ship. The price changed daily from 35 Euros one day to 250 Euros the next. Crazy. On the Canadian site it was never less than $300 I believe.
This reprint collection has turned into an unexpected disappointment, more so coming from the creator himself. You would have thought he would be more respectful with his own work.
In order to make all pages in disparate size and proportions fit into the book dimensions, not only most of them have been framed into a black border, but also quite a few have been cropped or even stretched where full-bleed was required. That’s completely unaceptable.
Never really noticed since I haven't read those first few volumes in two decades. What I will say is that I'm surprised, since Starlin oversaw the project.
@@NearMintCondition Yes, I found it odd myself because of Starlin's involvement, but... Well, you can see it yourself:
facebook.com/groups/ryleysgroup/permalink/2798235293559040/
I've got the now oop DREADSTAR: THE BEGINNING hardcover from Dynamite, collecting all the material previous to the ongoing book, and since all that was published in magazine size (EPIC ILLUSTRATED) or directly as a graphic novel (THE PRICE, DREADSTAR), they didn't have to deal with the problem of making different proportions fit into the narrower comic book proportions as they did here on this new omnibus collection, so that book shows none of these alterations.
😔
