John Byrne is incredible! He did amazing on man of steel series. Really do want this fourth world omni
Dang you Omar! I wasn’t going to get this but now…I have to get it! Great Overview! Also, please do keep mentioning every time John Byrne or a Superman Omni comes up that hopefully we get a John Byrne Man of Steel Omnibus collection. My hopes is If we all say it enough DC will one day do it.
Man of Steel omni would be BANGING!
That whole 3d thing Byrne was doing here reminds me of what Kirby use to do were he would paste something that looked like a picture in with his art
I love this channel so much. It brings me a certain joy I don't get anywhere else
Hell yes! Byrne's fourth world work is among the top tier of New Gods work in terms of DC ontology, stories, lore expansion, involvement of other pantheon and characterizations. Not to mention the fantastic art that is befitting of the other dimensional cosmic scope of the New Gods. New Gods Secret Files' timeline is just incredible for lore hungry fans like yours truly.
Instant purchase.
John and Walter have been friends for years. John asked Walter to do the covers.
I recently did the same with my miniseries I co-created with Louise, that we did, Presented by Film Director John Carpenter. I had cover #1 with my Inker Sal Buscema. But I switched it after asking Walter to lead the series off with cover #1.
As much as I want this omnibus (and will likely get it), I'm bummed out that we won't be getting a omnibus run of the complete post crisis Fourth World. The Mister miracle volumes, new gods volumes, Orion, and of course Cosmic Odyssey.
DC really needs to get better at creating a canonical line through their major series in Omnibus format
Thank you for this amazing overview and yes please DC give Byrne his dues with an oversized Man of Steel omnibus
I was taking the shrink wrap off mine when I saw you posted the video. I’ve never read Bryne’s Fourth World so I’m excited to start reading. It’s been a long time since I read Kirby’s Fourth World so I had to preorder it’s reprint that comes out later this year. Great video as always Omar.
Beautiful overall design on this omni! DC did it right on this one.
I generally prefer Marvel dust jackets but DC knock it out of the park sometimes.
Mine is on the way! Looks great, thanks Omar 😁
Got this last week. brilliant Omni... was very surprised that Byrne actually worte a new intro to the book
Really well done overview. Thank you 😀.
Great review!
It would've been SO COOL if they'd included the Darkseid vs Galactus one-shot!
Man. I know. But no way they could have.
@@NearMintCondition I had hopes because the Absolute Wild Cats has the X-Men/Wild Cats crossover included. But alas...
I picked this up from IST this week along with The Captain Epic Collection to replace the old pre-Epic The Captain collection.
I didn't dig Byrne's Doom Patrol run too much at the time either, mostly because it didn't sync up well with the continuity at the time. Picked up the Omni recently though and really enjoyed it. Definitely worth a revisit for anyone in a John Byrne mood lately.
Amazing video, hope I’ll get the omnibus soon.
Pd: Are you planning to release the xmen reading order 7? Kind of confused about reign of x and hellfire gala
Omar, have you ever done an overview on the original fourth world books by Jack Kirby?
Got this coming from DCBS.
Same!
OK, looks like I’m gonna have to get this now . . .
Mind blown!
Omar , is there any collected edition for superman man of steel by Louise simonson and John bogdanove? Saw some great artwork in single issues.
On order! Both Byrne's and Jack Kirby's...
I'm a sucker for anything Fourth World so I gotta get this. Simonson's Orion run/omnibus is secretly great and super underrated.
On the fence for this one. Not sure I’ll re-read it.
The Source Wall was created by Claremont and Simonson and introduced in the X-Men/New Teen Titans crossover :)
I wish DC and Marvel would make a deal so they could both collect that. Great story, beautiful art.
Oh yeah! Good lord what I would love for a collection of the classic stuff.
@@Krypton_Ken one would HOPE the fact that they're both with Penguin Random House now, could make that more feasible
@@cullenn2100 I'm admittedly so out of the loop on that stuff I don't know how it would factor in.
I guess this would fit on my shelf next to Simonson's Orion omni. Some of those pages look more Kirby than Kirby's own work.
How is that Orion series? I almost bought the omni despite never having read any of the issues, lol.
@@hamzadawud Simonson's Orion series is amazing. That Omni is well worth picking up, think it's out of print but still reasonable on Ebay. Takes place after this Byrne series, FYI.
Or the mister miracle deluxe edition, I loved that book and is the main reason I'm even buying this, just so I can spend more time with that character lol
@@hamzadawud I'd say the book was worth the price just for the issue where Orion and Darkseid fight it out.
You can pick up the full Orion in 2 trades. They're apparently better than the Omni as the back ups are in the correct spots vs the Omni placing them at the end. At least that is what I read - I don't own the Omni.
New Gods v4 1-11 and Takion 1-7 probably wont make it in to OHC, but given the 70s and 80s series' are both getting standard HC, there is always a chance they at least get one of those
NMC ON FIRE!
oh man, i was hoping you’d do an overview
Always a pleasure seeing you, brother.
@@NearMintCondition and I'm hoping you'd do a superman reading order, brother.
@@NearMintCondition Best overviews in the game. You could sell a ketchup popsicle to a person in white gloves.
@@ericgarza5533 ...or a New Warriors omnibus to a comics fan.
Just ordered this! Great series, I picked up Walt Simonson's Orion Omnibus last winter, I'm excited to go through and read all of these in order again.
Really happy about all these Byrne collections lately, would be cool if they'd collect his OMAC mini and Blood of the Demon series at some point. I think that would basically finish off Byrne's takes on Kirby's Bronze Age DC titles.
Omar, get them to reprint the Orion Omnibus!
I would be so upset/happy if they reprint the Orion Omnibus since I recently picked one up for 90 USD (cover price is 75 USD) but still happy because it's a great read still.
Wish they’d do Rachel Pollack run. John Byrne keeps stealing her thunder! (This and Doom Patrol omni lol)
I noticed that too. Byrne is a great writer but I’d like more Doom Patrol omnis as I hear that it wasn’t just Morrison’s run that a lot of people enjoyed. Plus I haven’t heard great things about Byrnes Doom Patrol run
Great overview, Omar. Two questions: 1- where I can find the first 12 issues from new gods and 2) cosmic odyssey by starlin is before or after this Omnibus? Thanks for your help!!
The first 12 by Rachel Pollack (sp?) haven't been collected. It's very different to Byrnes run. Check out the back issue bins.
Cosmic Odyssey comes years before. It directly precedes the New Gods series by Mark Waid. Vol 1 New Gods Bloodlines is out in trade and vol 2. which will finish the run has been seen in listings. It ran around 30 issues from memory.
At the same time as this Omni's run there was also Talion and Mister Miracle which also both only lasted around 7 issues before basically rolling into the Byrbe Fourth World title.
@@PM-oq8dg thanks a lot for the clarification.
Let me see... Spider-Man, Alpha Flight, Avengers, F.F. vol 1&2, Doom Patrol, Marvel U vol 1&2 She-Hulk, Namor, Generations & Uncanny X-Men vol 1&2. I think that John Byrne has the most Omnibus with his name attached to them. He might be the Omni King, long may he reign. 👍
I have to buy this one by the Master.
Please do a What if omnibus overview when you get it
I was debating. But for $40, heck yeah I’m picking this up.
Right lol 43$ can't go wrong
Book looks great! Not my cup of tea but appreciate the overview. :) Algorithms!
Will look great next to my Doom Patrol by JB, and Marvel Universe by JB Omnis
Preordered this one from ToW, along with a couple of Wolverine epics… just uh … waiting for them to pick & scan my books…
Anytime now 🙃
They can be pretty slow! But at least you know they will be packed and protected well.
OH WOW!!!
👏👏👏
Gerry Conway, in a moment of generosity, told the Jack Kirby Collector (# 46): “Without Jack, there’s no reason to read New Gods or to do anything with the New Gods characters… The proper revival of the New Gods would be a repackaging of Jack’s original material.” Happily, this has already been done.
Can I go from Kirby’s Fourth World to Simonson’s Orion? Or is this Omni a necessary read to bridge the two?
Interested to know as well )
This wasn’t on my radar. Now I’m waiting for it to be shipped. Lol.
There's no greater pitchman than Omar!
@@dogmd7 Big Factz
Omar i Know you pick on Patron what Graphic Novel Or Reading Order , Epic to Review, But can I Request a Review with Kurtis (The Marvel Podcast) Generation X, What Inside and when it belong in the X-Men Time Line.
It will never be as good as Kirby’s but I still liked the story so I’ll pick it up
Do you know if the Steve Ditko story that was exclusively in the tales of the new gods tpb was repinted in this omnibus?
It wasn’t.
@@NearMintCondition Thank you! I bought the Tales tpb couple years back. I was incredibly disappointed to find that the ditko story was excluded from my copy and instead had the last few pages duplicated. I was hoping this book would have the ditko story.
So does this continue the story Jack Kirby left off on? Or was this different?
This would be a volume 4 if they were to reprint the stuff in between. But then Byrne does his own things with the origins.
Ah. When you said it started with New Gods #12, I thought it was a continuation since his run ended at #11. Bummer.
Wait do I get free shipping on my first order or my following order?
The following order.
Can you confirm there's printing errors within this book? My Amazon order was all of a sudden cancelled and now I see some are saying their copies have errors in them so the cancellation is most likely due to that.
It looks like some copies have a printing error, but others don’t. Mine seemed fine, I only got 2/3rds of the way done:
Any links to what these printing errors are ?
@@djsuth7727 don't have any of those, just anecdotes thus far from people in FB groups, one person said it's not even just one page of missing word bubbles like in Morrison's Superman but repeated or missing pages that totals more than 10 pages of printing errors
@@Tyler-Clark Ugh. That doesn't sound good. I have a copy inbound, I hope it's not affected. Would be great to see some examples so I know what to look for, just in case it isn't obvious at first glance.
@@djsuth7727 somebody who has a bad copy wrote me this: Pages 449-456 are repeated and then 473-480 are repeated with pages 457-472 missing.
Well, now I got the Fourth World by Jack Kirby Omnibus, the Fourth World by John Byrne Omnibus, and the Orion by Walter Simonson Omnibus, so that's pretty much all the important ones. Do we need a Fourth World by Jim Starlin Omnibus? I'm gonna say no. Cosmic Odyssey and Death of the New Gods don't seem to fit in with the other stuff, even though I'm a huge fan of Starlin's Marvel stuff. They seem more like Elseworlds.
So which do you read first Fourth World Kirby or Fourth World Byrne?
@@jermainenowels9511 Yeah, you definitely should read Kirby's Fourth World first if you've never read it. If you don't like that, there's probably no point in reading Byrne's riff on it. IDK, maybe someone will prove me wrong and say they did it the opposite way around and had no problems understanding anything.
So you can read this without knowing anything about Kirby’s fourth world?
Have you noticed that there is NO page 554? It goes from 553 straight to 555. And since then the numbering continues to be wrong
Darkseid is.
DARKSEID IS. KNEEL BEFORE HIM AND MAKE OBEISANCE TO HIS NAME.
Hey, that's not Jack Kirby. I have the JK Fourth World Omni and I've never cracked open either of the two I bought. With the delicate paper dust jacket and the ten pounds of book, I'm just afraid I'll damage it. I get into my paperback books a lot easier, but those Big Books intimidate me. I don't want to damage them. Not that they will increase in value like a floppy, but between my mishandling of old books and selling off most of the good stuff I had for nothing to book stores, well, my past with comics has left me with PTSD. I'm literally afraid of damaging my near perfect books. I think comics and all of this race and gender swapping combined with the collecting VIRUS is just detrimental to my mental and financial health. Is this a healthy hobby for a 58 year old or should I just grow up? I really don't know what to do with myself half the time. : )
