- Neji Hyuga showed very early on that he was not only a prodigy, but he was also on the path to becoming one of the strongest ninja in the hidden leaf village. Even the current Hyuga clan leader made it admitted that Neji had the strongest Byakugan in their clan and would one day be the strongest member of the clan.
During the chunin exams, people openly wondered if Sasuke Uchiha even stood a chance in bringing him down in battle. However, after he suffered defeat at the hands of Naruto and then his victory fighting Kidomaru, Neji didn't play much of a role in the series until he died much later in the series.
It's for that reason that Neji Hyuga is the next up for the wasted potential series where we look at the highs of the characters and discuss what could have been if they were used properly.

Neji was a wasted potential indeed:
1. 359 degree vision, allowing him to see almost everything around him all at once.
2. Chakra vision so he can see you even if it's a thick jungle or pitch dark.
3. X-ray vision so you can't hide from him, or hide anything from him.
4. Insight, allowing him to read the opponent like a book.
5. Neutralizing touch, he's able to attack a person internally with chakra. Doing this he can:
1. sever muscles
2. damage the organs or rob you of jutsus.
6. Chakra channeling, he can send his chakra through things that are touching the opponent to attack them internally. Neji used this to send chakra through Kidomaru's web-line connected to his body and kill him.
7. Chakra blasts, releasing powerful waves of chakra from either his hands or just any part(s) of his body. In pt.1, Neji used this to blast away Kidomaru's webs that were covering his body, and to blast away Kisame's Water Prison when he was trapped in it in part 2. Neji also used it to send Kisame flying back and has also been shown using it against the Zetsu army.
8. Force-Fields, he's able to create a barrier of chakra aroundhis body for defense, Neji showed this in pt.1 to protect himself from Kidomaru's high-powered arrow when he was webbed up. Neji however also showed that it can be enlarged and a spin can be added to it in order to do damage to anything/anyone within range and further deflect attacks. Hiashi, Neji's uncle, also showed that the rotations can be made even larger during the Sound/Sand invasion.

He could've been the clan head and had a great family with Tenten imagine his and Tenten's kids using all these amazing weapons in tandem with their byakugan, that'd be crazy!
Air palm infused weapons with explosive attack power. 360 vision, perfect short and long ranged combat, High defense and offense they would have been pure raw power with few weaknesses. I mean Neji didn't really have many weaknesses to begin with but imagine if he had range and could throw chakra infused weapons like Asuma.

Bro their close and ranged combat prowess would have been nutty. I can see the child being alot like neji in terms of mind an focus but a little more outgoing. Yeah chakara infused weapons and possible abilities that can take out your chakara points from distance and negate certain jutsu along with how cool the fighting style would be with the weapons like the staff and such. Man what could have been.

@@jrod3521 Not really sasuke excelled close range and could hold his own mid/long range but had few to no long and mid range attacks in his arsenal before he got his MS. And sasuke's defense was never something to marvel about before he got susano

Neji was basically the Sasuke of Team Guy but smarter and older, dude was a better Taijutsu fighter than Sasuke and a better prodigy too. He had the best potential out of all the Konoha 11 and was my favorite... and we all know that if he survived the war he’d be incredibly powerful and be the Head of the Hyuga/Naruto’s 3rd hand man after Sasuke and Shikamaru and an elite shinobi....& Mid to High Kage Level with his rival and best friend Rock Lee.
He wasn't a better prodigy then Sasuke considering he wasn't able to do move that gai taught Lee while Sasuke was able to do it just by watching and learned to chakra nature's at such a young age
@@maadtee6281 yeah but Sasuke had the sharingan which he used to copy Lee's movements. Neji on the other hand learned his clan's forbidden techniques ( the ones only the main family was allowed to use ) on his own. That's one of the things that made him a true prodigy.

" but honestly, Sasuke had to train but he had his sensei helping him ( ie Kakashi bcuz they both have Sharingan ). however, Neji learnt the techniques on his own - without guy's help ( let's be honest here, guy couldn't have helped him bcuz he doesn't have the Byakugan ). I think Sasuke was a late bloomer as a prodigy, whereas Neji was a natural prodigy.

Rock Lee probably could have learned how to strike certain points better even with his lack of chakra and Neji could have learned to strike harder mixed with his gentle fist. Cutting of flow while breaking bones. I mean there are so many things that could have been done.

The hyuga were done dirty and I hope to God boruto rectifies this.
We were told that the Hyuga were the most powerful clan in the village. Next to the uchiha and had visual prowess equal to the Uchiha if not greater.
The byakugan gave them the gentle fist, rotation, air palm, 64, 128 palms, and they got shafted so hard.
He hated the hyuga system and Naruto even said WHEN HE BECOMES HOKAGE HE WILL DO AWAY WITH THAT, and that line has been forgotten. The seeds were set then for us to see this clan grow and flourish and be what the uchiha couldn't.
Why cant the byakugan progress like the sharingan?
Sharingan > Mangekyo Sharingan > Eternal Mangekyo > (then if you cheat) > Rinnegan
Byakugan > Tensigan > Jougan

The hyuga were the one that thought they were the strongest and it happened after most of the Uchiha died and when the Senju disappeared. The Byakugan is only stronger then the normal sharningan just by sight besides that the sharningan has always been stronger the the Byakugan. The Byakugan can't progress like the sharningan cause it doesn't have any steps for it to evolve and to attain it only an otsutsuki is able to attain the tenseigen
I disagree that Neji was in the wrong during his fight with Hinata. He didn't just flip out and try to kill her, she wouldn't surrender. She had every chance to give up before it went too far.

Hyuga Prodigy Shino had a little shine against Mitsuki but that’s it and Lee trained his son to get stronger but that’s all too both are very underrated still

You really need to go to Japan and give Kishimoto and his editors some pointers because the whole Hyuga clan was a huge disappointment for them to be built up and have one of the marry the main character
if Neji survived he probably could unlock Tenseigan of his own. Imo he should be the Hyuga's leader and become a mentor to Boruto & Himawari hand to hand combat. Sacrificing Hiashi should be a better option bcs he's finally acknowledge Hinata and make amend to his brother for protecting Neji.

Neji should have become an Akatsuki member. There is no doubt that Nagato could erase his curses Seal and Neji could have killed the entire Hyuuga clan.
Neji design is way to innocent looking for him to become an "Akatsuki member" the same could be said about Sasuke when he and Team takka put on those cloaks they felt out of place compared to rest of the other members overall it doesn't fit cause the only reason Neji and Sasuke were looked upon as villains at first was because they were both lost they were 2 different people that lived in the same world with different goals.

@Purvesh 17 he was literally a mentor to Hinata. He’s only 1 year older and a teacher to hinata lmfao. He was the prodigy of a clan. Also his abilities were also kinda pushed back cuz of his head mark. He would’ve been way stronger then adult hinata. Hinata surpassed him I believe but it’s cuz she’s an adult. Neji by far would’ve changed the hyuga and would’ve made them stronger. That’s why I feel like killing him was such a waste. He was right about the fate people are given.

It's a shame what happened to Neji in the series. He was such a cool character at the beginning and went through cool development. Some may view "the bringing the series' squandered elements" in a negative light, but I actually view it as a positive.
One of the best things to be given birth by the series is the vast myriad of creative, well-written fanfics. Like, seriously. Some of the authors on the site are extremely talented and have taken many of the concepts Kishi touched upon and expanded upon them in ways he would've really hoped to had the Shounen Jump Editorial staff given him more time and that's hugely down to some of the concepts he wasn't able to completely flesh out like the characters from Team Guy and Team Kurenai. He's crafted a gigantic glorious sandbox for authors to play in and produce their own creative works and I think this Wasted Potential series of yours does a fantastic job highlighting Kishimoto's sandbox

Tbh i wish naruto ended without any pairings and naruto became hokage right after the war instead of kakashi.
This way instead of having boruto we would have spin offs about those characters and concepts. I would also have neji survive the war to flesh out his character since we barely see him in shippuden.

It’s sad the both of them never confronted and talked about fighting each other. It was only at the Chunin exams Sasuke had Neji on his mind but after that they went their separate ways and never met again.

Tbf it wasn't just a peice of wood. It was 1000s of Wood Styles Spring cutter. It stabs you and multiple spikes explode from the inside outwards.
I think Neji could have beaten chunin exams Sasuke because it was kind of implied that Neji could beat Lee without the weights but not eight gates. Plus Sasuke at the time could only use Chidori twice in one day and if tried a third time, his chakra would drop down to zero.

In naruto pt1 neji has shown good feats throughout the anime and also was strong enough to kill one of the strongest member of the sound 4 who was kidomaru ( i think he was the strongest)

Tbh a good point to show off Nejis power would have been for him to accompany Asuma and the others in the fight against Hidan and Kakuzu. We could have easily gotten Asuma and Neji vs Hidan, or had Neji square off against Kakuzu with Izumo and Kotetsu backing him up.

At least jiraya had great moments and a great fight before his death. He fought until his last breath and the aftermath of his death were meaningful for naruto's growth.

Jiraiya's death was heroic and crucial to Naruto's development. Neji's death in the other hand is total waste of a character, he died for a ship that not even blossomed yet (Naruto finally realize Hinata's feeling in The Last Movie)

What would Neji have become if Naruto had lost that fight bewween 2 ideals? What if Nejis belief took him down "The Path of The Tyrant?" I wouldn't have minded Neji becoming a Rogue ninja because he chooses to fight his fate and the only way he feels he can is to leave the home tying him down and to become a rouge ninja like Sasuke did
Edit: It wouldve been REALLY interesting if Neji was to get his own "Retrieval Arc" so that we could see Team Gai show how deep their bonds truly are OR it would be cool to see Sasuke try to talk sense into Neji as he knows true lonieless and was saved by Naruto (assuming the Sasuke Retrieval Arc was successful and seeing Sasuke try to pull a talk-no-jutsu would be interesting to say the least) and seeing that diologe and fight between two charcters that BARELY spoke or made contact (if at all) in the actual series would be sick asf

Wasn't the seal implemented to prevent just that? Lee said that bad blood between main and branch families are common yet no-one apparently defected since the seal scared the branch members into being obedient.

The simple truth is Kishimoto killed him to guilt trip Naruto. He was sacrificed for a pairing that had no chemistry or made sense within the narrative. Hinata's crush should've been unrequited. If Neji had live...He and Hinata would've gotten married in order to unite both Branches. The Hyuga marry within the clan and are xenophobic to outsiders. Hinata could only have a chance with Naruto if Neji died, because then she's disowned.
Hinata never cared about her clan or Neji's issues. There's no guarantee that the Cage Bird Seal is demolished, realistically. The Hyuga have been using it for centuries. It would take time for change to occur. Hinata never gave Neji's death justice and he died for her obsession....
I always resonated with Neji!! Definately miss him watching Boruto today! R.I.P!! - I really do have an inclination towards determinism, kind of like he did, but perhaps with a more agnostic approach. Forever seeking! rather than committing!
I really wanted to see a hyuga using nature release jutsus. Neji was the perfect candidate for that. It would have been good development for him after the kidomaru fight. He needed something more than close combat and rotation. I know air palm was good but damn i wanted more.

1 thing I liked after the chunim exam, is when Nejis uncle talks to him about his dad, and he speaks highly of him, the look in Nejis eyes after that conversation, was like I wish I knew this sooner look.
He learned that even knowing his dad had a seal, he was still able to make up his own free will decision, because he also loved his family, despite what happened with them.

No. The manga made it clear, the spears being fired by the juubi were moving fast enough that Rotation couldn't deflect all of them. In that split second, Neji couldn't both jump in front and use rotation. He has to have his feet set to do it. Neji was in the air when he got struck down

Imagine Hanabi being in Neji's team of genin and he builds a relationship with her like Guy did with Lee. That would be seriously dope. Kishimoto also should've nixed the whole Sai on team 7 story. It would've been so much better and more interesting if they had people from the Konoha 12 fill in on team 7. It solves several issues from the time skip era. You get development for some of our favorite characters that we never received and we could see some sick fights take place. Imagine Neji goes on the assault on Orochimaru's hideout mission and faces off against Sauske finally and you actually get to see the friendship between Naruto and Neji develop. Or somebody like Shino going on the Garra retrieval arc because of his tracking skills and you see him help in the fight against Deidara. Most importantly, you could see Hinata help out on a mission and show more than just the one scene from the Pain arc in which her and Naruto have some legitimate development romantically. They could also show or explain how and why Hinata created the twin lion fists which kinda came outta nowhere. The other thing, maybe we could've gotten some new jutsu from the side characters. I always felt like Neji and Lee never developed past the Sauske retrieval arc in part 1. The only new thing Neji got was the gale palm which was super lame tbh and Lee didn't really gain anything except another 2 gate openings which Guy was already much better at.
More and more he deserved more did we all forget Gentle Fist to take advantage of this ability, wherein they strike an opponent's tenketsu to either seal or forcibly open them, thus giving the user complete control over their opponent's chakra. He could have open rock lee's7th and or 8th gate they can boost the tenketsu points!
Neji had so much potential as a hyuga. The way he died in the anime/manga was truly infuriating. It pains me to see that these characters that clearely had a lot of potential, and could've provided more, ends up getting wasted.

Neji just seemed like a great value version of Sasuke but with an extremely short character arc. Neji only had one arc of actual character development. After the chunin exams, Kishi just had him fight the Naruto version of Spiderman and that was it. Once shippuden came, his biggest moment was his death. All I ever hear about Neji nowadays is his death.
Man still hurts me that my favorite character was killed off but also this video just reminds me of how much more they could have done with him. If they were to still kill him off just so Naruto and Hinata could be together done the line, they could have gave him more cool fights and abilities or in depth contexts about him.
Hopefully he get reanimated, and fights Himawari.
Neji in Og was a badass and he was so strong that he killed kidomaru just by him self he was just a kid and also i think that beside kimimaru kidomaru is the strongest of those sound ninjas . Neji since episode 1 was one of my favorite characters he had everything you could see just how talented he was and had an aura of being very powerful which creates that idea like with Naruto and Sasuke of how good this guy will become he had that as well, and I Belive they could've paired him with Sasuke in the sense of someone very strong with loads of talent amazing prospects being from one of the most powerful clans in the village, and also narratively I Belive like me most people at beginning saw Neji above the rest just from a narrative stand point and feats at the beginning, so yeah absolutely they did not took full advantage of the potential the character had... Shame
I'm of the strong belief that Hinata should have died for Neji,which would have led Neji to become the next clan head of the Hyuga clan.If this would have happened it would have flipped the clan on its head and challenged something that would have been the norm.(Most people always fail to mention that the curse mark is supposed to protect the Byakugan from being stolen and most branch house members are bodyguards for the Main house meaning a numerous amount of branch house members have died for Main house members.This is why Neji believes his father had no choice in the matter of his death.) Neji getting actual freedom for himself and the branch house as a former branch house member is the reciprocity needed for the clan to actually heal. They literally just put another main house member in power And want the rest of the clan to trust that they will never do the curse mark again. I say that to say Neji being the next clan head will not only feel a desire his father always had for him but it will be hope and actual change in the Hyuga Clan. Better than him dying for…. a ship (-_-)P.S. what Neji said in the chunin exams about fate may have been cynical but right nevertheless.
Hanabi would've still been alive so neji could not have become the next clan head. And I think Hinata was already out of running for clan head since she was 12 or so. Still, I think neji could have become one of the elders or held a position in their clam decision making.

I think I was the only one who wasn't surprised about Neji's death. They even foreshadowed it during the chunin exams when he told Naruto he wanted to be free of that birdcage placed on him.

I think Neji should of survived into the Boruto era where he has a kid with Ten-Ten and finally be free from his cage when Boruto is sixteen. Neji's kid will be the first branch member to be the next head of the Hyuga clan.

I am hoping there's a way for him to come back in Boruto. It's unlikely but if it happens, it'd be amazing. Outside of Naruto & Sasuke, Neji was said to be the strongest out of the rest of Konoha 12. I would have loved for each of the OG cast to have fought a extremely powerful villain in Shippuden; there were so many opportunities.

Sometimes i think the death story is dark. He himself wanted to die because of seal or because kishi made shit of a top character. Remember chunin? He was op and made every character shit and pee at same time. Whenever i watch chunin from start to end, i want to cry for neji. The character who made everyone shit died like shit. He could have at least become like sasuke, their both attitude was same.
Neji should have been an akatsuki member it would have made so much sense.....his father killed because of his uncle.....mistreated by the main family because his father was born a few seconds after his uncle.....has a curse mark against his will.......a grudge on the main family which could literally lead to him slaughtering his own clan. It would have been awesome to see him as an akatsuki in my opinion

I believe in destiny, in the sense that everything that has happened was supposed to happen and everything that will happen is an inevitability that cannot be predetermined. But that does not mean one shouldn't try because if one doesn't try the inevitability becomes a foregone conclusion without a perceived possibility of hope.

Neji is always my ultimate favourite character in the whole Naruto franchise. When i heard about his death almost a decade ago i immediately dropped the whole series before reading/watching it, it's just too much to handle. Only recently that i have the courage to face it and hell man it hurts so deeply. I agree 100% with you that Neji deserves his own spinoff and i will definitely for sure spend whatever it costs on it, manga books, DVD, Blueray, you name it!!!!!!!!
Although it hurts like hell, i managed to accept his death. I mean, i'm ok that he sacrifices in the war, and it's AN ABSOLUTE BEAUTIFUL DEATH. I can accept his death because in the eastern culture (i dont dare to say Japanese because i dont know that much about it), it's quite common to believe in the flow of life. The basic idea is that this current life is just one part of the journey of the soul. I think that's also the meaning of the curse. You cannot choose which family you are born into, like Neji's and Hinata's fathers, small details cause significant in their paths. That's also the limit of human life. The "you can determine your own fate" is actually a simplified version of understanding the picture bigger about the flow of life. The journey of the soul is so much more significant than a few decades of human life. What happens in this human life time is meant to give lessons and for you to accumulate your karma, either good or bad, in the next life. The curse disappears when Neji dies, together with Byakuga, it's equivalent with the idea that the soul cannot bring to their next life the property or memories or whatsoever things from this life. Neji finished his journey (i want to stop using the word "die" because it's just too painful), with peace in his heart, protecting his friends and family. And it's absolutely beautiful. (still hurts so bad though).
I'm quite confident in that theory because i don't think it's pure coincident that Neji masters the eight trigrams 64 palms represents by the hexagrams and the yin yan simple. In the most common explanation, it's the description of how the flow of life, or you can also call it universe, works. I dont fully understand that myself but the basic idea is that life is a continuous flow, death is just part of it. Or maybe i'm just overthing it :v :v

The sad thing is if you look at the hyuga clans best ninja including the boruto era..they have kinda stood still as far as truly OP levels of new jutsu or advancing there own. Its just nothing there if neji was around..he would still be fodder to the top threats in the current era...hell, I don't know if neji at his best had he lived in the boruto era could take down lee..for some reason I doubt it if we look at the hyuga clan and where they stand as far as there abilities currently.
shooting real5 it’s Kishimoto’s fault tho... he made one clan to OP and left the other strong clan behind in power... the Hyuga is literally supposed to be on par with the Uchiha due to both clans being descendants of the Otsutsuki clan. If Neji lived he’d be on par with Lee in strength due Lee never beating him, Head of the Hyuga, married with TenTen, and strongest after Naruto and Sasuke.

Throw in how well received the uchiha and there jutsu was and it was a no-brainer that kish thought..man forget this, gonna ride this uchiha train for all its worth..and from a business standpoint whether you like it or not, it was a good decision business wise.
He was absolutely right about fate and destiny. Naruto didnt 'disprove' him because he was a failure. The only reason anyone ever thought Naruto was a failure was because they didnt know who he was or where he came from. If they did it would be 'oh look, the direct descendant of every significant person in the history of the Ninja world just bodied some scrub branch Hyuuga using a technique he only learned like a week ago and can now do better than anybody that ever lived. In the end, Neji's whole purpose in life was to be just strong enough to take the fatal hit for the Main family and guess what happens at the end.
Neji wasn't killed for NaruHina, he wanted to be free from his cage. Neji's death was foreshadowed in part 1 after Naruto whopped his ass.

I always thought Neji should have been like Kakashi/Itachi. He should have been at that level where he would have been part of Anbu before the other Konoha 11 were even Genin. He decimated Naruto in their fight, how was that not enough to get him to become Chunin? They kinda gave him something by double jumping him to Jounin but even that lead to nothing.
Between Neji, Lee and Guy's close range combat and Tenten's long range combat (even though it was pretty ineffective throughout the whole series) that team should have been unstoppable.
Also he had a realisation that his destiny wasn't prewritten after his fight with Naruto but he'd been fighting alongside Lee for 2 years, who arguably has a better backstory than Naruto, and it didn't stop him being a twat? Even Guy could have been that... guy. And no one telling him about the truth of how his dad died until he almost killed Hinata because of it? I hated so much about that show.
I think that Neji never believed that Lee could surpass him, and thought that Lee would never be able to be a good ninja, so he never listened to Lee or Guy ( ie. once a failure, always a failure )
Neji was definitely wasted. He was a JOUNIN at the start of Shippuden and was supposed to be the face of the Hyuga clan, the clan with the byakugan and break the clan traditions of accomplishing a destined life role.
