This fight was always my favorite. Hinata and Neji are more like half-siblings. If it wasn't for a couple of seconds, it would have been Neji's father who was the branch head, and Hinata would have been the one who sacrificed her life for him. Neji's anger is understandable, but so is Hinata's hesitancy to give her all against her cousin. She already was branded a failure because she didn't want to go all out and hurt her little sister. And yet, Hinata actually doesn't give up. I personally wish Neji would have lived to see the clan today, but I doubt that would have happened.
Y'know, I respect that even though she knew from early on that she wasn't going to win, Hinata decided 'I will straight up _die_ before I give anyone the satisfaction of watching me surrender. This fight is basically predecessor of Bakugo vs Uraraka from MHA because both talented guys brutaly wins beating girls with same date of birth, which are in love with a main protagonists, except Neji is dead but Bakugo is revived.
Hinata would've clapped 80% of the participants in her age group. Her Byakugan can keep up with Neji's evasiveness and razor-sharp accuracy, not to mention how many of the genin relied on chakra control and deceptive speed to beat their opponents. The Byakugan nullifies those, aside from Lee's absurd speed. Even Dosu and Zaku would've been in deep shit because she can just see where they allocate their chakra and block it. All they have left is subpar taijutsu against a Gentle Fist user. Really wish there were more fights involving the Byakugan. It's such an interesting kekkei genkai.
"Her Byakugan can keep up with Neji's evasiveness and razor-sharp accuracy." It couldn't keep up at all. Neji kept blocking off the tenketsu in Hinata's arms faster than she (or the spectators) could see, and she only realized it when she seemed to actually land a hit yet it did nothing to Neji.
So to anyone who thinks she sucks or that she got her butt beat, you are wrong. She is the weaker opponent in terms of fighting skills. Hinata knows it and Neji knows it. But if she was rubbish, this would be over in seconds. She actually keeps up with him for a while before he gets the first blow in. And at 1:52 she nearly hits him first which shocks the both of the them and causes them to stop fighting for a few seconds. I think that broke Hinata's concentration and adrenaline and also made Neji start to focus more as he wasn't really trying to begin with, as he expected it to be over in seconds. Neji definetley didn't expect her to come so close to hitting him first and never thought that she would keep getting up to continue to fight. She is strong but at this time with her skill set she would not have beat him. She just wanted to show that she could match him. The same thing happens when she fights Pain,she knows she can't beat him and that isn't her objective. She just wants to free Naruto.

Am I the only one understanding Neji s true pain? Hurting Hinata isn't the solution ofc, but his rage is understandable. This character indeed suffered a lot in his childhood. I doubt his suffering truly ended, no matter what beautiful words someone gave to confort him. The circumstances remained the same: his father was dead, he was living to protect the Hyuga main house and the curse mark marked his forehead till death. Too little focus on him. He s an interesting character that should have been explored more. I still doubt he was created to die in such a stupid manner. He had to change his destiny, because he thought his fate was sealed since birth. Not to die like his father.
No. You actually don't. His suffering wasn't even because of destiny and fate bullshit he was preaching on surface. It was because he was a literal branded slave to Hinata who didn't give jack shit about him and sucked off Naruto because daddy didn't love her. People act like she's a victim when in reality, it was neji. Did he go too far trying to kill her? Yes. Should he be held accountable? No. It's the chunin exams. Gaara didn't get punished for crushing lee's legs and nearly killing Sasuke and Sakura. Hinata knew what she was signing up for and Neji even warned her before this that he would not be held accountable and told her to withdraw because she was a spoilt girl who didn't train for shit or put in effort like her idol (naruto) did.

He was just doing his dirty business by protecting her. I think if he failed to protect her, he d be sentenced to death anyways. But nobody actually gave it some thoughts. Honestly if I were the author I d place either Hiashi to protect both, either id leave Hinata to sacrifice herself for Naruto, because she couldnt do anything in that war.

This fight is basically predecessor of Bakugo vs Uraraka from MHA because both talented guys brutaly wins beating girls with same date of birth, which are in love with a main protagonists, except Neji is dead but Bakugo is revived.

To be honest I felt really bad for Hinata in this scene and the way Nejji treated her mentally. I really wanted her to win
Hinata would've clapped 80% of the participants in her age group. Her Byakugan can keep up with Neji's evasiveness and razor-sharp accuracy, not to mention how many of the genin relied on chakra control and deceptive speed to beat their opponents. The Byakugan nullifies those, aside from Lee's absurd speed. Even Dosu and Zaku would've been in deep shit because she can just see where they allocate their chakra and block it. All they have left is subpar taijutsu against a Gentle Fist user.
Really wish there were more fights involving the Byakugan. It's such an interesting kekkei genkai.

It couldn't keep up at all. Neji kept blocking off the tenketsu in Hinata's arms faster than she (or the spectators) could see, and she only realized it when she seemed to actually land a hit yet it did nothing to Neji.

So to anyone who thinks she sucks or that she got her butt beat, you are wrong. She is the weaker opponent in terms of fighting skills. Hinata knows it and Neji knows it. But if she was rubbish, this would be over in seconds. She actually keeps up with him for a while before he gets the first blow in. And at 1:52 she nearly hits him first which shocks the both of the them and causes them to stop fighting for a few seconds. I think that broke Hinata's concentration and adrenaline and also made Neji start to focus more as he wasn't really trying to begin with, as he expected it to be over in seconds.
Neji definetley didn't expect her to come so close to hitting him first and never thought that she would keep getting up to continue to fight.
She is strong but at this time with her skill set she would not have beat him. She just wanted to show that she could match him. The same thing happens when she fights Pain,she knows she can't beat him and that isn't her objective. She just wants to free Naruto.

For those who make fun of hinata bc she lost her "only" 2 fights:
-Hinata, unlike other girls, (excluding tenten) trained alone ever since her sister beat her. Her dad also abandoned her and started to focus only on his "prodigy" in the clan. And judging from the way she interacts with her ppl, she didnt have friends to rely on. Naruto was the only one who gave her the motivation to become a ninja so she can protect him like he did before they graduated. She also observed him and saw how determined he is to become a hokage and she loved him for it.
- The other fight yall are talking about, which is against pain, kakashi barely landed a hit on him while hinata jumped to naruto's rescue and fought him head on, punched him (I mean bro, even the kyuubi couldn't beat pain bc he was uh...idk- but yh)

Man I remember watching this growing up. Everything is so much better. Voice acting, colours, animation, story, soundtrack etc. Modern day Boruto is like all techno music and bright colours and just all around lack of emotion in its creation
