    Which layout do you prefer? A, B or C? I'm thinking of a medium to dark grey backing/binding? thoughts?

      I really like A or B the best---not C; I wouldn't put a solid on the backing; I would try to find a black/grey patterned backing---just a thought

    I think it would be interesting to have a single diamond (either centered or off-center), with all of the remaining strips paralleling each of the four sides, to create one huge diamond design. That, of course, for a larger quilt! 😺💕🐾

    If it is already quilted with batting and backing, why more backing and how are you going to attach that backing AND I agree that you probably do NOT need the top muslin. LOVE the stained glass fabric tho! You can buy 1.5" jelly rolls in solid colors which saves a lot of time cutting. HAPPY QUILTING!!!

    • @CrazyDavesCrew
      @CrazyDavesCrew  6 років тому +1

      Thank you for watching and for your comments. There are so many ways to get the same result. The choice to use muslin was just a personal preference. Putting the backing on each square - again a personal preference -- I want to limit the fluff going into my machine. I'm working on getting this one finished (life has just been very distracting lately) and I will make a quick video showing how I attach a finished backing. I am by no means an expert. I'm learning right along with everyone else. Hope you're having a wonderful day.

    I usually piece right on top of the batting. Is there a reason for the additional piece of muslin between the batting and the strings?

    • @CrazyDavesCrew
      @CrazyDavesCrew  5 років тому

      Personal preference. I simply prefer sewing my strips to the muslin -- in the past, the batting seemed to leave pieces behind in the machine. But, having discovered the warm and natural batting (which seems smoother and less likely to leave pieces behind in my machine) I may have to try sewing straight onto the batting again.

    • @CrazyDavesCrew
      @CrazyDavesCrew  5 років тому +1

      I've taken some time away from my machine and from that project but a finished project is coming up! Going to be very simple -- after squares are attached, will add the backing with a few straight seams up and down, then add binding. Video is on its way.

    I understand how to attach the block together with the black piece, but I'm confused about putting the backing on it before binding. Do you just sew around the edges to attach the backing? Does the backing just free float on the back with no quilting or attachment other than around the binding edge? Could you put a 1 1/2" black binding over where you've joined the muslin blocks together, fold in 1/4" on each side, stitch that on the back on each side or with a decorative stitch to cover where the muslin blocks go together? That way you could use an attractive piece of fabric in place of the muslin back, see the quilting as you go lines. Would this work? I'm just a little confused by the extra backing that is put on the quilt as you've described. Thanks for the strip quilt lesson.

    • @CrazyDavesCrew
      @CrazyDavesCrew  6 років тому +1

      Some different ways to bind it. Once the back is "quilted" (down and across the adjoining black strips), can either bind with binding or can make sure there is some overhang of the backing and fold it over the top. Part of what I love about quilting -- you can choose the method that works best for you. Thanks so much for watching.

    • @melanienicholson2834
      @melanienicholson2834 6 років тому

      I know this was a few months ago, what I do is, instead of using muslin while quilting as you go is I use the fabric that I plan to use as the backing. I also only use 100% cotton batting so no need to use muslin on top.

    How will you quilt the black inbetween squares so all layers are the same thickness? Am I missing something here?

    • @CrazyDavesCrew
      @CrazyDavesCrew  5 років тому

      the sashing between the blocks will be small enough that the blocks "butt" each other. I'll put a backing on it and sew down the sashing seams. Part II of this project -- ua-cam.com/video/vIqSIHlIAPw/v-deo.html -- Part III where I finish it with backing and binding coming very soon. Thanks so much for waching.

  • @marshaemerson3413
    @marshaemerson3413 6 років тому +1

    I can see how you finish the top by putting the 1 inch strips of black between squares and sewing them but how would I finish the bottom? or do I need to put another backing on?

    • @CrazyDavesCrew
      @CrazyDavesCrew  5 років тому

      I'm putting a backing on it. Part II shows how I attached a couple of the blocks to a thin sashing (no batting with the sashing -- black strip is only 1" and with the seams, the string blocks nestle next to each other) -- ua-cam.com/video/vIqSIHlIAPw/v-deo.html
      Got distracted with other projects but 2019 is my UFO (unfinished objects) year! Part III where I finish the quilt is coming soon. I will "quilt" it by stitching down and across the sashing seams. Thank you so much for watching.

    • @CrazyDavesCrew

      I like these -- 45mm Rotary Cutter Blades (PACK OF 10): amzn.to/2SdyPlI
      Very important (I learned the hard way) -- change the blade out as soon as you notice it giving you a bit of trouble. Also, check the screw that holds the blade -- not too tight, definitely snug, and it will loosen with use.

    Hey, I got a question please, if you don't mind but that blue cutting mat. where did you get it? and what can you trace that Dresden plates right off there. So it has things you can trace and cut for your sewing?

    • @CrazyDavesCrew

      Here is a link to it on Amazon -- amzn.to/2NsZZmd
      I've never used the shapes on the mat yet, but it's nice to know they are there for when I DO want them. I'm assuming you'd use a think piece of paper, trace the shape and then transfer it to the fabric. Let me know how it works.

  • @joannmccraw7235

    I like A the best. Each diamond block could be bordered with a 2 1/2 inch black strip sash to give the appearance of windows. For the backing, I would chose a batik blend of colors similar to the colors used in the top or stained-glass side ... I don't think a person that would like all the pretty colors in the "stained-glass" side would like a backing that would be in the dark black/gray end of color, or lack of color. I think a black or gray would be depressing. Unless you want to let the family know your mood for the day when they open the bedroom door ... Stain-glass top side = "happy day" and Black/gray on top = "go away". ;)

      Totally agree! Loving the string blocks! ua-cam.com/video/vIqSIHlIAPw/v-deo.html --- I join blocks with a thin sashing -- the quilted blocks will just butt together with no bulk. Part III where I finish the project with backing and binding coming very soon. Got a little distracted with other projects but determined to finish those dratted UFOs this year.

    I vote zig zag .... but in all honesty....... i have a weird ocd where things need to be even, lined up, and matching.... soooooo.... yeah... my ocd was kicking in high gear on this. very pretty though. love the colors.... and overall my vote is for zig zag.

      I had to laugh with your comment. I have Meneire’s Disease, an inner ear disorder, which causes also a disconnect with my eyesight and my brain. Too much design can cause me me to get dizzy. So I prefer just straight lines because my eyes can follow the pattern with less interruption. Beautiful design and colors.

    Love the A layout! But how do you piece together the quilted squares? Won’t the seams be too bulky?

    All blocks are sewn. Next step is squaring them all. Will be putting all the squares together soon and then finishing the blanket/quilt. B

    I realize this is an older video, but I'm wondering...you said that as you go along on these string squares it's already quilted, and I see that is the case, however, what about when you put a backing on...won't that also need to be quilted?

    I really like the first setting (A). Could you give me more info on the jelly roll, absolutely adore the fabric. You say it's called "Stain glass pinwheel" can you give me who the maker is? I would like to try and order the fabric if I could. thank you

      Link to Amazon in the description for Benartex jelly roll -- not the stain glass window that was purchased from Tuesday Morning. Amazon does have a selection of Benartex jelly rolls that are very pretty. In fact, I think I like the dance of the dragonfly better! more blues and purples. Thanks so much for watching.

      I also love the "Dance of the Dragonfly" fabric and ordered it in a jelly roll and layer cake. May try this pattern with "A" pattern but I also love "B" so it is a toss up for me!! Never can make up my mind!! That is why my stash "of many colors" is HUGE!!! Spoken like a true quilter, eh???

    Is a piecing foot the same as a walking foot?

    • @CrazyDavesCrew
      @CrazyDavesCrew  5 років тому

      no. I use the walking foot when I have thick, bulky or multiple layers. The piecing foot has a guide to help you get accurate 1/4" seams. HONEYSEW SA185 1/4 Inch Piecing Foot with Guide For Brother: amzn.to/2ALE592
