- After the overwhelming success of Pokemon Ruby, Sapphire and Emerald Game Freak attempted to top themselves on the Nintendo DS with Pokemon Diamond and Pearl in 2007. Two years later fans of the franchise got "the ultimate version" in the from of Pokemon Platinum.
In this In-Depth Review we'll be discussing this incredible sister game as well as ranking generation 4 along the other legendary entries. Is it as slow as some say? Are the Pokemon just rip-offs of gen 1? Do we really NEED remakes of gen 4? Well let's find out together in this opinionated video!

Hey folks! Just want to apologize for this video taking a month longer than expected. Not only did I greatly underestimate how long playing this game would take me, but things also got really crazy with the channel during December.
I promise to upload a lot more content over the next few months, and barring one video I'd had planned for months, I'll be taking a small break from Pokemon videos until the eventual gen 2 remakes!
Thank you for your patience over the last few months and happy hunting!
RandomTens no worries! It was well thought out and very insightful, and all around a wonderful video that was well worth the wait.
It's cool, man. We still love you bae ❤️
RandomTens it's fine Stan! Just know that (I think) every single subscriber you have understands
RandomTens I was 8 in 2007 and looking back I have no clue how I beat it under 48 hours of play time
RandomTens the wait was totally worth it Stan thanks for this awesome gen 4 review and I'm really excited to play through diamond pearly and platinum while tuning into your shiny hunting streams!
Gen 4 did the Physical/Special split according to moves. This was one of the most key changes in Pokemon ever
lycan2500 1 Agreed! 12:30 I give it tons of love! Just compared to the other games so far that's not AS much. Still awesome and the reason why I said this has the best battling system of any gen! :)
unfortunately, that meant alakazam couldnt just sweep everyone with psychic and the elemental punches. neither could gengar, but yeah the physical/special split was long overdue. And finally pokemon like gengar and absol could make use of their stab.
Yeah no more special bite
In terms of competitive pokemon, Gen 4 I think was probably the best solely because of that. Gen 5 created massive power shifts with a number of the added pokemon in gen 5 and the hidden abilities (speed boost blaziken).
@@rishabhanand4973 I wouldn't call that unfortunate... Good to get a bit more balance in there
This is my favorite generation, but I completely agree with every critique. I got so used to DPP's pacing that every other game feels so fast, so maybe that's just my taste, but it's still a real quirk of Sinnoh games.
Also, Diamond/Pearl are even slower than Platinum. Actual load times were trimmed and general movement speed was upped in Platinum, so it feels like Gamefreak made some serious technical fixes between the releases.
Mindy Horn my fav gen is 3 or maybe 7
Miles still the old one
We'll say 3 then.
The first two gyms signature pokemons are pretty freaking strong
All of his points were good except saying the music is his least favorite. That's just bad taste, the music is amazing. There's a reason Smash 4 loaded the pokemon stages with gen 4 music.
Go play sun and moon. Just as slow but because they hold your hand the whole way instead of letting you play it yourself lol.
I think that between the Sinnoh games and HGSS, gen 4 is the best, hands down
Gen 3 is best imo
I mean imo between the Sinnoh games and HGSS, Diamond and Pearl ruined it from being one of the best... and the slowness... and Palkia and Dialga :^) HGSS was awesome and Platinum seems great.
I didnt like D/P/P
Platinum was pretty good but not the best HG & SS where amazing and one of the best Pokémon games but diamond & pearl where the worst main series Pokémon games ever so I think ether gen4 or gen6 is the worst.
EMmax130 same
Gen 4 fixed so many old evolution lines. Imagine if sneasel, swinub and magneton just stopped there
True but I still prefer Rhydon over perrior
@@duskplains1235 glad it's trade evolution
Swinub has evolved into pilloswine since gen 2, mamoswine was gen 4.
@@b3thness *How dare you say that to my Weavile* >:(
Gligar
This probably because of the nostalgia factor, but this is still my favorite Pokemon game. The soundtrack was amazing and I still find myself listening to it to this day. This game still remains in my top 5 favorite video games ever.
Ditto.
The Nostalgia is so heavy for me.
That's what I love and sometimes take for granted with video game music. You might not like your childhood games later in life as much as you did back then but the music can last with the right composers
SargeWadam Cynthia's theme is godlike
23 yro and I still play pokemon...
I played this game in 2012 so I was a bit late to the party but I was super into the cards when gen 4 was at it's peak. That being said I didn't know what the games were like so I avoided them (even though I had a DS in 2009). Luckily my friend gave me the game for free in middle school and I've loved it ever since. It was my first game in the series and is still one of my fav all time games.
I got to experience soul silver and saphire after that and every game in the series but I'm so glad I started with Platinum.
this gen is a lot like regigigas (which was also released this gen)
slow, but once it gets going, it is pretty awesome.
supersmashbro596 regigigas sucks tho

I miss those days

My best friend always came at my place to play together (now it’s 4 years he went away)

me too..
I don't think it has anything to do with gen 4 and everything to do with your friend and parents
sry about that bro...
Sounds to me like you’re still a kid 😆
:( Do you need a hug?
Its ironic how the newer games have so much less of a post game lol
Platinum was the post-game peak, and while Game Freak tried to add more post game content there wasn't much they could do besides recycle ideas from this game, which is a shame because post game is just as much fun as the main game
What about ORAS I think Delta episode is best for post game
HGSS entered the chat.
@@macandcreamy1036 B&W2 has entered the chat.
@ definitely lacking on the battle frontier side
"It took me three hours to get the first gym badge"
Persona would be hell for you
i like having long(ish) spaces between the gym battles. i feel like they are supposed to show the trainers growth and thus it makes sense to have a gap between the gyms as you should have time to get stronger. infact i really hated how quickly one went from gym to gym in oras where one could essentially go from lavaridge right to petalburg and immediatly challenge the next gym afterwards. i like the idea of having the 8 gyms as different ''stages'' to get through in that fashion since i think like it makes it feel like more of a journey.
Ahh yes. The teal colored Team Galactic bowl cuts, honey trees and making poffins for contests. Good times.
Also, Cynthia is introduced in this game! Yaaaas
HOW CAN YOU FORGET ABOUT THE FOSSIL AND GEM MINING
My only demand i have for the remakes is that they keep the original music. It's so iconic.
Alexander Miltenburg they wont... i hope they dont do as oras, i disnt like oras s music
route 209
or atleast option to use ogrinal music.
something similar to the GB Sounds item would be amazing but I won’t count on it cause unfortunately as great as the GB Sounds was in HGSS the only reason it was even put in the game was as a clever reason to officially sell the GSC soundtrack because it wasn’t officially sold before so they were able to put the GSC music on the soundtrack by putting it in HGSS and selling the ost for that game lol
Or remaster it and have a classic music option.
Isn't the implementation of the Physical Special split a source of innovation? No other games have introduced it before....so saying that it isn't as creative as the others is doing the game a disservice. On top of that, there's also the implementation of Honey Trees, Wi-Fi, the PokeRadar, and the Underground Mine.
EisAWSOME I believe I touched on all of these, minus the honey trees throughout the video and as I said I don't want to do it's innovations a disservice. However when compared to the previous generations I've reviewed thus far this one absolutely had the least amount of innovation. But that's just a byproduct of the series being so successful and having so many wonderful games to keep perfecting the formula!
Ah, I see where you come from with that, I do apologize if I came across as rude in my first initial comment, I didn't mean to shit on your video that you put so much work into. It's a great video though, thanks for responding.
Honey Trees Feature
Was Kinda Annoying
The mining was fun, I really enjoyed that. Ruby/Sapphire/Emerald's secret base mechanic combined with child labor. Just great!
"I can't imagine we'll ever get a core series without touch screen." That statement aged like milk lol. Great video though! Watching them all.
This video made me play pokemon Platinum right now again XD
Ahhh Gen 4 my favorite !!!
style Sinnoh is not the only gen 4 game
to me is the worst
@One Thou Wou Gen 5 is worse lol
The only Gen 5 thing that's slightly better than sinnoh is story
Lol gen 5 sucked
Cyrus is as close to a cult leader as these games can get, barring maybe Ghetsis. He's so creepy but is quite sympathetic once you learn his motives and that he was emotionally abused and neglected. (In a way, his backstory reminds me of N's.) After Ultra hints at a possible redemption (He asks you if, had he met someone like you, would things have turned out differentl for him? Of course, he could mean if his plan would've succeeded, but after his melancholic yet oddly nice interactions with Rotom, and his promise to not harm your world, a lot of people, myself included, seem to wonder if that's a redemption tease.), I'm quite interested to see what they'll do with him in the remake.
Jadeazora Cyrus didn’t “come close” to a cult leader. He was one. 100%.
I also agree that Cyrus is redeemable. He didn’t harm anything if you really look at things. Poor thing. He can and will be saved. ;-;
@@fatuusdottore he harmed the lake trio
@@lilylopnco I agree it doesn't. Even if Cyrus is redeemed, I still want to get some remorse, atonement, or punishment for his actions.
(Personally, I like to play with the idea that the Lake Trio cursed him while you all were in the Distortion World, and it would only take effect if he left as time doesn't pass there. So, even tho he's end up redeemed, his actions still have consequences.)
Cyrus was a really well written character imo. To this day he is one of my favorite villain characters
this Gen brought us Darkrai, the best thing since Mewtwo. Hands down best Gen imo (not only bc of Darkrai, duh... but bc of the perfect Soundtrack too)
I kinda think it's overrated.
@@jjc4924 Every one of the first 4 gens get overrated even though they are my favorite
i agree in the darkrai part
i mean, darkrai so far is the pokemon that totally abuses sleeps mechanic, and the addition of its dark typing, which is sounds cool (dark=evil, you battle with evil gimmicks. i mean, what is more evil than crushing your opponents while they're sleeping?)
@@jjc4924 WHY DO WE CANT JUST ENJOY THE MOMENT
Bruh we just want to be nostalgic for awhile, is it WRONG to be nostalgic for a while?
I still like the game. Don't get me wrong. But I don't know if I agree if it's the best gen.
To me the Gen 4 game(not counting the remakes) are 1 of the best pokemon games. I love sinnoh it is one of my favorite regions i liked the atmosphere in there. I loved the pokemons from gen 4 since they felt unique and the legendaries are some of my favorites. The villain team was a bit lackluster but had an interesting goal. Also best champion.
@Merciless Freak Tbh Cynthia is the best champion.
@Merciless Freak Nobody even comes close to Cynthia tbh.
@Merciless Freak Nope Johto and Hoenn champions are a joke. Kanto is hard because Blue has Alakazam which is broken af in Gen 1 with no weakness and also Pokemons are limited in Gen 1 and half of it are awful then Gen 4 which all the issues of lack of Pokémon, weak Pokemons, lack of moves and the physical and special are fixed but despite that Cynthia is still hard to beat.
@@kenmarkollano5795 the best champion is alder bc he's more human.
"Is it really deserving of those remakes"
A foolish question to a obvious answer
Gen 4 is my favorite gen. Diamond was my first ever Pokémon game, and it was the game in which I accidentally picked my favorite Pokémon ever, Turtwig. I loved its music and it's towns and everything about it.
Lmao! Platinum was my first game, and I accidentally picked my favorite Pokemon ever, too! Its Infernape though.
Gen 4 introduced Garchomp, basically the best pokemon of all time.
Merciless Freak its one if the small list of non legendaries to get banned to ubers and still put in work there
Before megas came along the thing was pretty damn amazing, still holds a good place even.
Ice bean
I got stuck at the fourth gym when I was a kid. To help me, my cousin gave me his level 70 Luxaray.
Gen 4 was the best, hands down. HG/SS and Platin are the pinnacle of Pokemon Games. Only BW 2 comes close but that's Gen 5.
Don't discriminate against Blacks and Whites!
But yea, Gen 4 is the best.
Raindropz Gen 4 in my opinion was the golden era of Pokemon. Maybe it's nostalgia clouding my eyes but it just felt so alive back then. Don't get me wrong I still love the new stuff but whenever I watch videos of Platinum HGSS and even DP I always miss those days.

S M O L
I started playing Pokémon in gen 4 (Pokémon Pearl). Pretty much the main reason I got the game was because I watched my brother play it and fell in love with Buneary and Pacharisu, but I've been almost obsessed with the Pokémon franchise since.
Back when I was in high school, two of my friends and I had a competition to see who could beat their gen 4 game the fastest. None of us had jobs, we could play at home, we could play during our free time during class (we were all brainiacs so we had a lot of it), play on the bus (we all rode different buses but we rode for relatively the same amount of time), and play at lunch. It was pretty balanced. My guy friend had Diamond, my girl friend had Pearl, and I had Platinum. We were all pretty even in progression throughout the challenge, but when we got to surfing, they were both jealous of me because of Platinum being slightly faster. I decided to make it a little more difficult for myself. I also had a copy of Diamond so I started playing it as well. When I started Diamond, we were all at Spear Pillar, and I was also starting a new gen 4 game, so I stayed up all night to catch up. I played using L=A option so I could play in the halls and carry my coffee. In the end, I got first on Platinum, I got second on Diamond, my girl friend got third on Pearl, and my guy friend got last on his Diamond.
Absolutly agree Platinum was beyond good and really enjoyable. Being difficult having the greatest pokemon design on pair with gen 3 ,amazing post-game(except gen 2 of course which had a whole region) and amazing music which i personally think is the best they will evet offer us, this gen along with gen 2 for my opinion is the second peak pokemon reached speaking enjoyability and creativity (not to mention the anime which was really fun to watch those days).
Enjoy? Gen 4? How?
cause its greta games, good story, good challenge, no execive ahdnholding physcial special split the most important thing in pokemon after its creation. great region and pokemon, nice gyms and gym puzzels.
are alot of reasons to lvoe gen 4. aslo ti has hg/ss which for most people seem tp be the best or their favorite games as a whole.
I don't like the cities and the routes are too basic and all the game only bored me for being too slow.
Diamond and Pearl have some nice pokemon, but the majority are only available in the post game :l
@@fenistereinc.5797 Gen 4 has the best pokemon designs overall.
@@fenistereinc.5797 "the majority are only available in the post" that's...literally a lie. All of the sinnoh pokemon are obtainable before the elite four, not counting the fossil you can't find in your game and the version exclusives.
Gen 4 being "slow" is a good thing imo. It allows you to savour the masterpiece that it is.
Isaiah Campbell well said
Isaiah Campbell not only that but it also gets you to really stay and play the story because it makes you want to know what’s next
Isaiah Campbell hahahaha
Also makes you feel rewarded when you beat it and feels a lot more organic
Nah
I love gen 4. I'm not sure why it gets so much hate. It's gotta be my second favorite generation. (2 being number 1).
DJ HEX Maybe because Gen 4 games are slow, bad story, bad characters, etc
I disagree i think they where a bit harder and had more of a difficulty curve, so while to some it felt "slow" to the rpg player it felt like a more welcoming and fun grinding aspect to this generation that none have has since.
Satoshi Have you even played throu it? I have seen you hating on it so much. Yes it is slow but the story the features and especially the characters are perfection. This generation has the BEST champion in the entire series. None of the future generations can’t even come close to the amazing music like gen 4. You clearly haven’t played through these games and only think like that because of other people. Have you been introduced in gen 5 or something?
*+GameNReader* Confusing region layout?! Seriously?!.
DJ HEX I don’t think I’ve ever heard it get hate... and yes it is pretty slow compared to other games, the default text speed, walking, everything just seems slower for some reason. Also yeah it was pretty generic.
No wonder it took you so long to review this game, you had to review both a game and basically a movie.
OddSauce it's true
OddSauce If that's the case then I guess gen 5 will be coming out sometime in 2019

"You'll run into your old friend Cynthia" *heavy breathing intensifies from the power of the danger waifu
This was a really good review! Brings back a lot of the good memories I had with this game. I even agree with a lot of you criticisms for the game, but as a kid playing these games as my first Pokémon games I didn’t notice how slow or tedious they were. Also the challenge was crazy hard especially with Cynthia, but so satisfying that when I beat her I immediately told my parents how happy I was. That’s why I’m so excited for a remake of these games because they can all be solved with the hardware upgrade and quality of life choices like Gen 7s HM Pokémon. Once these games come back as remakes many people will likely enjoy Sinnoh so much more than they did the first time veterans and newcomers alike.
I wish with BDSP they just remade platinum instead of literally just copy and paste DP at least they could’ve put the distortion world in it
How is it controversial that Platinum Is the definitive way to play gen 4? I thought this was widely accepted lmao

The more I play Platinum, the more it becomes my absolute favorite. So many memories with this game. So much time put into it. As I mentioned in one of your streams, I've gotten the black trainer card twice and painfully and stupidly restarted and am still working on it to this day. Kanto has so much nostalgia and Pokemon Red was the first video game I ever played besides arcade stuff, but MAN this game was INCREDIBLE.
gen 4 was really good :)
I wish it had a remake for 3ds, hopefully we get it
Lordcolegaming it would be on switch
Lordcolegaming Who cares what console it's on as long as it's good!
I do want to see get remake because I want to see if they fixed the problems.
Let's be honest, there's no reason to remake Gen 4. It's perfectly good on its own, there aren't a lot a things that need to be added or fixed (aside from speed, oh god gen 4 is slow).
Also, there's the fact that Game Freak could mess it up, like some people argue they did with RSE.
Monado Guy True that
Monado Guy I agree but I would like a remake because having gen 4 on the 3ds or supposably on the Nintendo switch would look outstanding!!
As I share more nostalgia with Gen 4 then I do almost any other game I can think of, i'm kind of scared of Sinnoh Remakes. I don't want to them to mess it up. Platinum means so much to me, and I really just don't want it to change. I sound stupid, but it is my favorite gen by far.
Monado Guy Unless the remakes will be for the Switch or a future console/handheld, they should definitely avoid it since you can still play Gen 4 on a 3ds to this day!
What about online

Thank you. Its so heartwarming to find someone else who feels so much love towards Gen 4 like myself. Sincerely, thank you.

I played through platinum about a month ago. As someone who likes challenges, the difficulty of platinum was refreshing. I played thoroughly and it took my about 65 hours to as near to completion as possible. I thoroughly enjoyed the game

Diamond was alright as my first ever pokemon game. But when Platinum came out, I knew that Platinum would be 18 times more better than Diamond and opened me up to Competitive and Shiny Hunting. Platinum gave me a reason to keep playing pokemon and even reach the Gen 1 games (That I hate) but still, a nice blast to the past (not nice but rough and scaly)By that I mean I hate Kanto and Gen 1 (Yes even the remakes) But the remakes soften the hate of Kanto for me (Even though it's gen 3) still soften kanto in my opinion
Sounds like you just wanted a reason to whine about Kanto
I wish more people would mention the VS. Seeker. It's one of my fav features of FR/LG and Platinum. Honestly it's one of the things that keep me coming back to those games. I would love to see them make a return in the future.

Gen 4 and 5 were both difficult to play through compared to all the other gens. But those two gens are what introduced me to Pokémon gaming. So when gens 6 and 7 rolled around and I went through it so easily...

Edit: First two cons: Slow and Difficult... To be honest, I think that’s what made me like the games.
Another edit: ‘Try imagining a seven year old trying to beat this game’ hears the person that beat the game when he was five.
Thank you, the Gen 4 roster is phenomenal. So many of my favorite Pokemon have come from this region. Garchomp, Empoleon, Turtwig, Drapion, Lucario, Spiritomb, Driftblim, Luxray, Staraptor and pretty much all of the legends/mythics are absolutely amazing additions to the series.
I chose the best gen 4 starter.
Chimchar.
JSK I think you misspelled Turtwig.
What about Bidoof?
Growing up in rural Canada, there was never a lot for a kid to do outside of school. I was very fortunate that the Pokemon franchise was extremely popular while I was young, in that my parents bought me Pokemon Pearl as my first video game. I played it and loved the little pocket creatures so much that I bought Platinum, Explorers of Sky, and Soulsilver immediately when they released. The fourth generation of Pokemon made up such a important part of my and my friends' childhood, from our countless trades and battles on the playground, to the lessons the games taught about the value of patience and the importance of believing in yourself; and these games will always hold a special place in my nostalgia vault, despite their minor flaws.
I love Gen 4 it is my number one favorite generation and I been playing Pokémon since gen 2. I always say I'm from twinleaf town 😂
Dead ass I would trade Shield for Diamond
Pokemon Diamond had me stop playing Pokemon for a bit. Perhaps if I had played Platinum, it wouldn't have been the case. It's weird since I ended up loving SoulSilver. I was in college, so it wasn't really uncool, but a lack of time because of school probably contributed to this. It also felt... sterile, kind of formulaic like you mentioned. Cynthia is great though! Definitely still my favorite Champion from the series.
Awesome review though! Everything was well-thought out and put together in a very enjoyable video. Hyped for the SoulSilver one!
Have you ever played Black and White + Black 2 and White 2? Those games are better than Diamond, Pearl & Platinum in my opinion. In fact, it's just as great as Heartgold and Soulsilver.
yeah gen 4 (at least the start) was pretty boring and it wasn't until I randomly played gen 5 many years later that I got back into the series and finally finished Platinum
Honestly I like the slow pacing, it makes it feel like an adventure that makes each gym feel like an achievement. The journey doesn’t feel like a day long past time, but something that takes months
Your review on soulsilver will match your hair xD
Bro i was just vibin watching this vid while playing Pokemon black working on a living unova dex but then i randomly find a shiny mandibuzz. I fell out of my chair in panic I did not realize it was shiny until i heard the sparkle. I caught it first ball in a dusk stone and named it Gretta friends choice not mine. Since ive never seen your channel until now and watched your black & white review and your sequals before this i feel your vids gave me good luck.
BTW: if anyone has a better name to give it you can always let meh know.
I love Platinum. Pearl was good, and Platinum was amazing. I loved the difficulty. It took me a long time to beat the Elite Four and Cynthia at 10, but when I did, I was ecstatic. HMs were annoying, but I learned to deal with it. There were so many cool Pokemon to catch, with the only annoying bits being the Honey trees (But you could always adjust your DS Time). And I'm still surprised that they haven't brought back the VS Seeker; It was so cool to fight the very first Youngster you fought and see his Level 40ish Staraptor. To this day, it is still the best Pokemon Game I've ever played.
The way you review on this series is awesome. I cant wait until the new video!
In my opinion I think gen 4 brought the strongest Pokémon out of every generation
xxPokeDjMichaelxx 267 Yeah the roster's really strong and I feel like you can really personalize an amazing team before even getting halfway through the main game
RandomTens yeah you get a lot of Pokémon that are strong and memorable like lucario garchomp torterra and starapter it is really one of my favorite generations
TurboMike1220 U we got what is the best pokemon being garchomp not including legendaries or megas.
Then Gen 7 came out with the ultra beasts
The best way to experience sinnoh is imo diamond and pearl, because of the crazy amount of glitch development still possible after 10 years. Platinum patched the void, and imo the voidglitch is, even tho unintentional, the very best part of sinnoh.
You shouldnt complain about gen 4 being difficult to new players. You can get through any game easily by just using your starter.
Therealchris929 Lol that shit is easy
@Therealchris929 Lol sun and moon (and usum) are the easiest games by far (with the exception of ultra necrozma which is still just one battle lol)
@@based_tradwife7748 X and Y were way easier than S&M, and definitely easier than USUM. USUM can actually be sneaky difficult if you don't know what's coming, though it's far from the hardest in the series. But yeah XY were by far the easiest, I literally never even got close to losing on my first blind play-through.
It really isn't. I actually like that it's difficult if you don't grind. From gen V onward Pokémon is always easy even if you don't grind.
Marinus. Not Gen. 5 literally. But fair points.
Pokemon Platinum is one of my favorite Pokemon games by a long shot. Diamond was my very first handheld Pokemon game and so made 2007 a fun year instead of a dull year. I love the fact that it focuses on time and space (though then again a certain TV show probably highlighted this fact even more, even more so with the inclusion in Looker) as these are some of the more mysterious aspects of our own world, so using this inside the Pokemon world made Sinnoh really interesting. Dialga was my first legendary and I love its design (Piplup was my first Pokemon ever) and the fact that it controlled time...! The twist that revealed team Galatic's true plot when you go to rescue the lake guardians still creeps me out, mostly due to the music in the background. Speaking of, the music in these games is my second favorite soundtrack after gen 2. I love how each region seems to have a key instrument to identify itself with. Gen 2 seemed to be flute, gen 3 trumpets and gen 4 was the piano. Though I will agree that gen 4, especially at the beginning is really slow! Though thankfully Platinum wasn't as slow as Diamond and Pearl (remember the surfing and walking speed in DaP?) Anyhow, Generation 4 is honestly my favorite generation despite its flaws and I sincerely hope that we get a Switch remake in the near future.
Great video Stan I also love Gen 4 it's my favorite!
To this day, Platinum is my favorite Pokémon experience, followed closely by Emerald. I remember downloading the japanese game just to play it before the english release, and then bought the english version. Downloaded all of the Wi-Fi events and spent lots of hours in the Battle Frontier. Also, it was the time that I learned the competitive aspect of the game. God that's a lot of great memories
i remember being so extremely frustrated because of cynthias battle in diamond, i ragequit and didn't play the game for 2 months. when i picked it up again, i started grinding, determined, and i beat her with SO much luck - i still remember the fight to this day. that was 13 years ago.
i really - really miss the competition. the games nowadays are so easy and handholding, i feel insulted. i managed to beat gen 1-4 as a 7-11 year old, kids aren't that dumb and want some challenge too. nowadays nothing is memorable anymore, and dont get me started how short, overpriced and rushed sword/shield are.
It's so long ago that I've played GEN4 that almost all of this video was new to me.
I love this series of yours. You've some great insights there.
I lost my platinum game, but im not really too mad about it, but happy that this is out now
I feel your pain, I too lost my game and it obliterated me, not as bad as when I lost my omega ruby, but it was bad. I've recently bought a new one but I haven't played it since Sun and Moon came out.
Yo, Panicked Pikachu, you lost TWO Pokemon games?! You have to watch your stuff man! XD.
I like it when he says "and," followed by a long pause
MY FAVORITE GAME IS POKÉMON PLATINUM!! Thanks!!
“Will they surpass Crystal or even emerald? “
Coming back the gen 4 remakes are truly a embarrassing 😂😂😂
hands down the best generation
Debatable

Prestige XV I think you meant Gen 5
Guys, that’s his opinion. Just like those are your opinions. Geez! In my opinion Gen 4 is the best hands down and none of you can convince me otherwise.
Gen 5 is like the worst, only saving grace is BW2
Platinum is my favorite Pokemon game, I've been playing since Red and DPP came out when I was in high school, but your critiques are interesting.
I actually think Platinum has the best pacing in the series. Up until Platinum, there's at least one gym where you basically jump right to it with no buildup or route; Viridian, Olivine, Petalburg, and Canalave (in DP). By redoing the gym order, each Gym now has proper buildup. Not only that, the large amount of towns do a great job breaking up the routes so they never feel too long, barring a few (like the snow routes). So I don't mind the game's length one bit; it's definitely the meatiest story campaign even to this day. It takes me around 25-27 hours to reach the credits in most other games (22ish for Johto), but for Sinnoh it's usually 30, sometimes even closer to 35. Some of that is because of the slow engine, but a lot of it is just how packed the game is.
Which brings me to the other point about Sinnoh; I agree that it can seem a bit bland, especially after Hoenn was so exotic, but I think as you said, it excels because it has a little bit of everything. There aren't any ungodly long water routes and there's a lot to do between gyms - there's even more to do if you go back to optional areas with new HMs. Sinnoh is probably the densest, most complex region in the series, and it's a shame we haven't seen anything like it since. It also brought us snow-based routes for the first time in a decade, which gave it some much needed flavor... and some slow, sometimes frustrating traveling.
Platinum can definitely be tough, it's a tougher game than Diamond/Pearl for sure, though I would say Emerald has the toughest campaign of any Pokemon game... at least, that was my experience as a kid, haven't played it in 15 years, maybe it's time to revisit. I think Platinum's challenge is just about right; my biggest complaint is besides Crasher Wake and maybe Fantina, the Gym Leaders are kind of pushovers (at least for someone like me who's been playing Pokemon for so long, maybe kids have more trouble), but the final Cyrus battle and Elite 4 are just the perfect difficulty. They'll definitely mess you up if you don't have a good team.
I also agree the music is probably the least memorable among the series, at least for the first five gens, with some obvious standouts like Cyrus and Cynthia's themes. It's still pretty pleasant overall and enriches the experience.
Like you though, I think gen 4 has the strongest lineup of new Pokemon, and the physical/special split along with online (RIP) are gamechanging additions that make it very difficult to return to previous gens. There's a lot of great Pokemon games, but I think the additions gen 4 brought, along with the refinements of Platinum, make it the best the series has seen. Given the direction the games have gone since the 3DS, I feel pretty strongly that even if this gen gets remade, Platinum will still be the optimal Sinnoh experience. I just replayed Platinum last month and I still feel like it is, as Masuda said, the ultimate Pokemon game.
It does have some severe flaws. Like the slowness, little bit grindy in the later halve, too much HM requirements, long and gimmick routes; like swamp & snow, that feels an little bit sluggish & overvloated complex of Sinnoh's design. But even with the flaws, it's an fine game nevertheless. But not the " ultimate " Pokemon game IMO.
Hello my dear youtuber, I was a 7 year old in 2009 and I'm confirming that it was possible for a 7 year old to beat Platinum.
Hommer Sampsin lol I was 7 In 2009 too and I beat platinum as well as diamond.
I literally have watched this video every year since it came out. Its so good
I’ve never see such a great review before. You clearly put effort into your analysis and gave some great concrete to your opinions. Along with the cons I say I completely agree as I did find the game sooo slow in the battles especially towards the end with the elite 4. But great review and good job. Your defiantly better then some thought to be pro reviewers like IGN!
Agreed. Hope the remake will fixes some issues.
I only played through Diamond growing up and it was my most beloved in retrospect.
I had it with my DS during middle school where I would ride the bus and my friends and I would do DS download play and just have a lot of fun together on our ride to school. When diamond and pearl came out and changed everything. All of us will get together and play on the bus and meet up in the underground and trade constantly, it was the first game where I completed the Pokédex, it was also where I got the chance to move most of my team from old games onto this version! I poured hundreds of hours into Diamond and I’m currently in the process of buying Platinum so I can experience the ultimate sinnoh adventure
>Plays Platinum at the age of 7, sucks at English.
>Gets stuck for like 100 hours so just continues to grind his Pokémon's.
>Level 78 Infernape after 2nd gym.
>Win Elite 4 including Cynthia and all gyms with just one Pokémon.
The only reason why the game was hard for me was because I didn't know where the fuck I had to go at the time. I finished the game with 358 hours clocked in though I spent a long ass time figuring things out since English wasn't my primary language (nowadays it is)
I personally didn't like the 4th gen roster that much besides Lucario and a few others. The music soundtracks weren't as good as previous gens either imo. And the gameplay definitely was way too slow. I can't really bring myself to replay it unless it's a randomizer rom because I absolutely hated chasing Team Galactic across the map (partly because I couldn't understand English that well so I didn't understand where I had to go)
It's still a great game but shiny hunting sucks in Platinum. You have to pretty much complete the game before you get the ability to shiny hunt so that's a long ass time. I haven't found a single one yet myself but it's not like I really want to anyways. As I said, I didn't really like the new Pokémon the gen brought.
I just hope one day there will be a free roam Pokémon game with all regions and access to shiny hunting from the start so I'll have a chance to setup my dream team. I hate story based games.
ッAllu buys a story based game
Hates it because its story based
Platinum was my first pokemon game, got it when i was 9. Me and my bestfriend at that time used to play it all the time, i have to many great memories from this game. It's here my love for pokemon started, this game has a special place in my heart
yay! something that isnt a live stream!
omg it says loved by randomtens! i never feld so special! thank you so much stan!
Sadie Parker Thank you for your patience while I made this long video! :P
While i was huge on gen1 as a kid I dropped the series for over a decade. It was when i was a few days off of a 18 hour plane ride and in a game store that the shelf of pokemon games I had never seen before caught my eye and i figured screw it. Not knowing what gen was what, Diamond caught my eye (they had no platinum on stock at all) and going from red/blue to gen4 was an amazing experience. I know now that it gets some hate for its slow plot, but I felt like it only added to the experience. I still remember one leg of the trip between two cities being so long and arduous that when I finally made it and you meet with barry and the professor I felt genuinely accomplished. I remember looking forward to finally seeing these legendary pokemon talked about throughout the story, and how massive the world felt in a way where i didn't know what was next.
I would absolutely love remakes for these games, but my only concern is they could never live up to the sheer size and scope of sinnoh. The post-game in gen4 was truly impressive and it added so much value to the games whereas there seems to be a new trend toward post game being a battle maison/battle tree and that's about it.
I hate when people never mention diamond and pearl. Instead, they just leave it in the dust, while platinum, heart gold, and soulsilver take the spotlight. You have to realize those games wouldn’t exist without d/p
Dr Power yeah but you have to admit that Platinum is the better version
Just now finding and watching your reviews, honestly I like them! They are well put together! Keep up the good work
In my opinion I think gen 4 brought the stongest Pokémon out of every generation
LaziAnthony Then what gen did you think had the strongest pokemon?
Gen 3, 5, and oddly 6 in my opinion
I love gen 3
Gen 4 is my second favourite in terms of designs (even though Diamond was my first game). I like Gen 3 designs a bit better. However I think Gen 4 nailed the starter designs. Honchkrow, Lucario, Garchomp, Togekiss, Weavile, Roserade, Gliscor, Mismagius, Staraptor, Luxray, Electivire, Darkrai, Shaymin, and Girantina are all badass amazing designs imo.
Ive recently played Platinum on a DS emulator called Desmume. I thank the creator, especially for adding a speed-up function. Otherwise i wouldve gone mad waddling through the snow and swamps
playing pokemon diamond rn XD
Ninetails The Great I am playing pearl right now(my favorite Pokémon game)
Being a huge fan of this game, I have to say that literally EVERY point made in this video was spot on and cannot be argued against. The cons are such valid critiques and not at all nitpicks and the pros truly do make up for them in more ways than one in my opinion. The only other thing I might add to this would be that I truly do wish that Game Freak wouldn't have made so many legendary Pokemon with event exclusivity as I now am sad that I will never truly complete this game 100 percent. Great video!
Incredible video, but i can’t believe this is your least favorite soundtrack. Platinum has in my opinion the greatest and most balanced soundtrack in the whole series
Despite all the valid criticisms of so many pokemon fans, gen 4 will probably for a long time be my favorite gen mostly because it was not only my first pokemon game, but also my first rpg. I got into gaming pretty late since my parents didn't really buy me any consoles until my friend was getting deeper and deeper into games and so I wanted to as well.
So when I was around I believe 12 or 13 I played Pokemon for the first time and instantly fell in love with it. There was just something magical about the monster collecting and the journey you had made. All the areas were so beautiful and the game really made you feel immersed as well. I also liked the difficulty of Platinum and the slowness and HM issues didn't phase me as much since I had nothing to compare it to.
Starting my pokemon adventure with gen 4 instead of gen 1 has taught me that probably to most of us our first pokemon game will forever hold a sort of special nostalgia within us that you can't experience in any other pokemon game other than maybe a remake. That's why we have to remember that at the end of the day people's favorite gens can be anything from gen 1 to gen 8 depending on from which they first experience this series.
So while the criticism in this video is of course valid and realistic, It is still not fair to hate on people for liking a specific gen due to nostalgia reasons. And I'm not adressing the video here but rather the people who usually hate on people for liking any gen more than gen 1.
