HEY EVERYONE! Thanks so much if you got through this crazy beast of a review. Whether you agree with me or not the fact remains that gen 5 took many risks and attempted to propel the series forward in a massive way and so this video ended up being so much longer then it was ever meant to be. Thank you for your patience in my absence from uploading actual videos as I feverishly worked on making this as good as I could, and I learned from this video that going forward I will no longer set dates or announce when I drop a new video in this series. Instead while making other, shorter content like “The Rarest” and countdown videos, I’ll be taking my time playing, recording and editing these monstrosities behind the scenes so that I stop these rough patches of no content. Please look forward to many more videos and the future of this series and I really hope you like the Black and White review because it’s my personal favorite video I’ve made to date!
6:52 In gen 2 Team Rocket cut off Slowpoke tails, I think that would be the first physical abuse in Pokemon. Great review by the way can't wait for BW2!!
I know this video is old and all. But I love how Ghetsis' Hydreigon is low leveled. And has frustration ability which increases damage the more the pokemon hates his own trainer which gives an ironic twist that Ghetsis is this character that forced his pokemon to evolve by abuse. Kinda like what he did to his own son. These small details is what truly made me love this game so much.
There’s a chance hers could’ve evolved early out of sheer happiness. Either that or she took a leaf out of Lance’s book on how to evolve underleveled dragon types-
You forgot the part that Ghetsis's team is actually set up to be a counter to N's showing that Ghetsis was planning to defeat N if you failed and take the power for himself.
im playing them now for the first time (stopped playing pokemon after gen 3 and then picked it back up at oras, recently started playing all the ones that i missed) and these games are AMAZING. the world and graphical design might be my favorite across all the generations
That's the thought process in the past. (Even at the time you wrote that). Gen 5 is the Gen most Pokemon fans won't shut up about on how it is the best thing ever made. It is not underrated nor is it overhated anymore.
@AkaInstincts most hate was towards the pokemon from what I could tell its underrated typically because you wont find many saying its their favourite gen, I think ive heard every gen but black/white so thats my guess
TheNerdyGinger It’s insane, but I’m the same way with other creators as well. Video games and this series are just such a huge part of everyone’s lives nowadays and I love seeing passionate people analyze them in similar ways to other media art like movies and music. Either way it was an absolute blast to revisit Unova and I’m glad you enjoyed this one. Just wish I could get them out much faster!
RandomTens I think your videos work so well because they take time. It allows you to reflect on your experiences and give context, emotionally and historically. A lot of reviews are just initial feelings and while those are great and useful, they don't always pose meaningful questions. It's especially useful since you've had the chance to take in Ultra Sun and Moon and have even more of an ability to compare and contrast with the entire arc of the series. It's probably exhausting, but it really pays off.
Conner Emery Woah this is maybe the single best comment I’ve ever received on UA-cam no joke. Thanks so much man. Seriously it’s really cool when you guys appreciate/notice these sorts of things. Usually after these reviews I want to stay away from the series for a while, but honestly after all the support I’m really driven to get right back into BW2.
RandomTens I'm glad! I rarely comment and haven't made a UA-cam account and feel weird just using my name, but I know how stressful it can be working on something creative and then waiting for a response. Heck, even if it goes over well and you get a lot of views, it's the discussions that help solidify that the amount of time you poured into something was ultimately worthwhile. The way you produce things leads to a unique perspective that I *really* appreciate. Of course I'd like to just watch everything all at once, but I can't tell you how exciting it was to see this was up today. I'm glad to experience that again in the future, whenever that may be.
Just noticed a few things 1.Gen 5's friends as rivals scenario felt natural in comparison to future games 2.The Railroading didn't stop you from exploring hidden caves or tombs if you wanted to break from the main journey (can't wait for gen 6)
yeah, people who hate bw1 for being linear while liking gen 7 makes no sense at all to me. in gen 7 it's so much worse, you literally can't to anything but the main story (which isn't even half as well-written as gen5's) and besides in bw2 you have a lot more freedom and a crapton of things you can do. usum didn't even add that to sm
random guy gen 7 separates things which imo cheapens the experience because it locks you in but tricks you into believing the game must be big because 4 WHOLE islands.
What I love about these games is that they are *ACTUALLY DIFFICULT.* The Elite 4 will absolutely kick your ass if you don't prepare properly. Also I love Unova as a whole and the new Pokémon themselves.
When N returned in Black and White 2 I genuinely lost my mind. White was my first Pokémon game and I was so sad to see N leave even though I really didn’t understand the story. I just really enjoyed his character even then. And now I can appreciate every aspect of him. It’s a shame you seem to be gone for the time being. I’d love to hear you talk about Black and White 2 and the amazing memories you can unlock that happen between the two years
Gen 5 is the generation I consider the most timeless. The story and characters I think will always be enjoyable, the soundtrack is in my opinion the best in the series, and the various pokèmon of Unova are incredibly varied, but nearly all of them are perfectly good on a team, not to mention a lot of them have some really great designs. It is easily my favorite Pokèmon generation so far, which is saying a lot, as I love them all.
@@Zeus_Almighty The nostalgia must cloud your judgement because Gen I games are nutorious for being incredibly broken in more ways than one. It's fine if you like Kanto itself, but there's no denying those games did not age well in the slightest amd you're probably better off playing FR/LG instead (which also have their issues, but not nearly on the level of R/B/G/Y).
@@Skallva Yeah...youre basically right. But i meant the design of the first gen pokemon. Also playing the first games as a kid was incredibly fun, believe it or not. 🤗 The remake is also very nice. I especially liked the concept of rebatteling the trainers. I also like the second gen very much. I bought the crystal game for 3ds I recommend it to you,its 10€/dollars.👍
I gotta admit you really went above and beyond covering this game, more than I ever could. To me Gen 5 has a special place in my heart because it took a lot of risks with having little to no Pokemon from previous generations, and also just the story and atmosphere were a significant departure. I remember at first I thought of is as just another Gen 4 game, but looking back it refined a lot of the issues I had with generation 4 as a whole. So much so that I do consider this generation my second favorite of all time. The fact that Black and White 2 build on this formula even further is just the icing on the Unova cake!
BladeBlur Thanks man! It seems the wait definitely paid off. And yeah I’m super excited to tackle BW2 now, which is weird for me as I typically resent the series for a bit after these monster reviews release lol
@@ThyFloorestFloor yes it does. Very subtly though. Each season has its own featured instrument in the route song (depending on the route). For example, route 2: Spring: flute Summer: I'm unsure, i think drums?? Fall: piano Winter: bells
*Saw someone talking about gen 5 for about an hour* *faith in humanity restored* But seriously tho, the end credit maybe simple but not boring at all, seeing how they give us one heck of an epic credit ever in the Pokémon history
So Cilan, Chili, and Cress decided to stay out of the team plasma castle situation, but one year later they regretted not going because the sages escaped. While talking to each other they get challenged to a battle from the shadow traid. After losing they decide to resign as gym leaders and decide to restart from the ground up.
Do not subscribe to this channel m8! I remember watching that scene and it made me so sad. Like there was literally nothing happy about it, it was just depressing. But it also made me appreciate the game more too because it dared to do something like that in a game that’s supposed to be all happy
This is honestly the first review where I could hear the criticism being made towards the game and it felt Fair, and I think all of the positive points you hit the nail right on the head, this was a great video about the greatest Pokemon game to ever be released
i'm so glad i went to a school where no one felt the need to judge others. literally my entire senior class had a copy of either black, white, heartgold or soulsilver lol
I think BW is quite a bit more specialized. Pokémon games have always been very generic to have the widest appeal possible but BW asks very specific questions and has very powerful moments. Not only that but it's also not obvious where they fit in. Generations I to IV are an evolutionary line; each game building on it's predecessor but BW is does not really build on DP and more is it's own thing.
@32rush well...the writing itself is actually good to it just has a slow build up but there is nice good writing in there. noeither game is perfectly written though. some may argue for example they could have handled team plasma better and I would argue in vanilla sun and moon they could have handled lusamine at the end better. which is part of the reason in my rather unpopular opinion usum had the better story
Gen 5 anime was soooo bad. My favorite anime gen was definitely gen 4, but I also liked the gen 1 (back when ash was a savage) and gen 3 anime seasons. Gen 6 wasn't bad either until the last episode of the Pokemon league
That is true gen 5 is my fav pokemon game but hated the anime to a point where is could t watch past ep 3 and for me gen 4 are the worst games on par with sun and moon but I loved the anime for gen 4
TBH athe Anime was kinda going down hill as it was when Misty left and the VA changed =( Sorry ash's current voice just doesn't sound like him. This is just an opinion! Those who like the newer seasons, don't bite my head off.
I think the linearity is offset by A, the fact that there’s optional dungeons and places to explore on basically every route and B the fact that as soon as the main story is over you have an entire second half of the region to explore and take at your own pace. Not to mention that the story is so engaging and the characters are interesting enough that I don’t mind the linearity at all and I’m fine waiting till the post game to explore.
@Caitlyn Carvalho probably not, pokemon makes too much money. Besides the franchise as a whole is basically dogfighting so I think the entire IP would come under scrutiny from animal rights before specifically team plasma
@@EscaVODS Yeah, Masuda has been the writer since RBG. He wrote every single pokemon story except Let's Go (Which might explain the easily avoidable contradictions in the cashgrab). Maybe the problem is the short time between games, but most likely the fact that GF still refuses to act like a big company.
Scott Riley Adrueno It’s even baffling how they immediately stopped trying after gen 5. It didn’t even happened progressively like with some other game series.
I know there are a lot of complaints people have about these games but, they're personally my favorite. Yeah, they aren't perfect, but they don't have to be, especially playing this game as a kid. Nostalgia is definitely part of it, but, I just love these games. I think they're probably the best in the Pokemon series.
@@jadedjimmy the designs of the klink, vanillite and trubbish evulotionary lines, they say that the story isn't groundbreaking and characters have no development (wich shows they glanced over it at that point), they vlaim the pixellated sprites looked ugly on mewtwo (wich shouldn't be count because i for example don't give a shit about that minor detail) and so on. Oh, also stupididty because they MUST defend gen 8 at all cost for some reason
I honestly miss the Dream World so much. There was something really rewarding about playing games on my computer and directly having it affect my game. Made me feel like a kid again.
RandomTens yassssss!😍😍😍😍😉 Unfortunately we must give Sunnoh it's deserved remakes too! Anyways imagine waht kind of tech develops when we finally get our Black and White/Black and White 2 remakes, or msybe Black and White 3!!😍😍😍😍😉 Maybe holographic?😍😍😍😍😉
I took the plunge back into Pokemon with Pokemon Black, and Unova has since become my favorite Pokemon region, so I will FIGHT anyone who hates on it. The focus on story is definitely the strong point of BW, but the characterization is beautiful, phenomenal and completely underrated, so I'm glad you mentioned it. I do have a small issue with you not mentioning the reason that the Striaton Triplets were not present in the final battle: Bianca ran all around Unova gathering the Gym Leaders together to go face off against the Seven Sages. She states in the post-game that by the time she got to Striaton and brought the triplets over, the battle had already ended. Among the Elite Four, Caitlin gave me the most trouble. Marshal, by contrast, was the easiest--my Unfezant wiped out his team just by alternating between Aerial Ace and Fly. And that's why I love throwing verbal smackdowns on people who hate on Unfezant. But Archeops will always be number one in my heart. I'm a big dinosaur fan, and I also love adorkableness, and Archeops is an adorkable dinosaur X3 My starter, meanwhile, was Snivy! I fell in love with the smug little grass snake the minute I first saw it and knew it had to be my starter for this one!
CJCroen1393 Welp, but we definitely must NOT become like the genwunners...... Gen5 is NOT perfect at all! The short postgame of bw, the linear flaws, the sometimes not great graphics..........All of these were mildly fixed in BW2, but it was a bit too late, they were also a bit easy......... Gen5 IS my favorite! Black 2 was the first game i got really invested to!😍😍😍😍😉 But it's important to note it's flaws, as EVERY pokemon game has it's flaws, and it's positives too! Eveyone has the right to make their opinion, what we must NOT do is throw hate at other gens, or blindly praise our favorite gens or call them perfect. Each then has it's lovers , and that proves that each gen can stand on it's own! Gen 5 is great, not perfect , and is one of my favs! 😍😍😍😍😉 Also, competitively Unfeazant is bad, BUT it'll always be one of my personal favorite regional birds! 😍😍😍😍😉 Woth a scope lens and super luck he can have hilarious battles against some opponents! He litteraly critted Marlon's Jellicent, making it so easy and hilarious! 😍😍😍😍😉😂😂😂😂😉 Unfeazant i love you!!!!!!!!!😍😍😍😍😉 Thanks for battling with me and getting me to the champion in Black 2 ! Along with my other teammates! Serperior Lucario Zoroark Arcanine Jolteon Golduck! And the one we're talking about here my stylish Unfeazant female ! Love you all!😍😍😍😍😉
Two major things that basically made me dislike gen 5 were the graphics and horrible pokemon design. Graphics tried to be too fancy for the original DS system and it looked just weird and awkward. I hated it. And as I said the pokemon designs were HORRIBLE. Gen 5 introduced so crazy power creep that many old pokemons dropped tiers in usage. Not only the power creep but also most of the new gen 5 pokemon looked weird. Obviously there are few exceptions but generally I would say that 80% of gen 5 pokemons looks ugly and/or stupid. So yeah these are my opinion based reasons to not like gen 5.
CJCroen1393 I'm with you, while Platinum is my favorite single entry in the series, black and white and black 2 and white 2 are, in my opinion, so well put together and beautifully made that gen V is my favorite generation. I really love all the Pokemon in it, especially garbodor and vanilluxe (whom I loved even before I became aware of all the hate towards them). I even captured what became my favorite Pokemon ever in my white 2, a Crawdaunt named Crabington who I always end up taking with me in every game corphish is available in. I don't understand how people can hate gen V so much, with it's amazing narrative, excellent characters, and beautiful art and cutscenes.
@@Alexcoman51 why are you complaining about the elemental monkeys if they are bad then just ignore them dont spread the hate,if they suck on battle then just spam amnesia and work up over and over again..
This Pokémon entry felt like a soft reboot of sorts for the series. It took a lot of risks and the final product was one of the most CRIMINALLY underrated Pokémon games in the series. The Black and White series is easily my second favorite Pokémon entry, just edged out by Emerald, but barely beating Platinum.
@@PeruvianPotato I mainly liked it due to it having a good and memorable story (which I know isn't saying much since Pokémon isn't known for that). That made the game much more for me. I can't say the same for the games that came afterwards tbh.
@@jaretco6423 I don't think Sun & Moon are good story wise in my opinion but objectively is probably the best after Black and White 1/2 but that's not hard to do when looking at other games. Especially Gen 6 (Favorite Gen overall but bad story) and 8 which do I need to explain why its sucks lol.
Gennady. Ok. I stop playing Pokemon after Gen. 5. I did play X & Y before Gen. 5 and I was incredibly disappointed by it. Not awful. But not great either.
I got into your series looking for reviews for Black and White/2 since they're my favorite entries. This was perfect and worth the wait. It's nice seeing someone as enthusiastic for these games making something as well crafted as this.
48:19 A feathered serpent. C'mon, man. It's based on the Archaeopteryx. It was a prehistoric animal that is commonly attributed to as the link between terrestrial therapods (two legged dinosaurs) and birds.
@@ballisticarrow27 it's surprisingly well known actually. Most high school biology classes will talk about it during evolution to grab their attention with dinosaurs
MistikaManiac Could you possibly entertain the fact that it could have multiple inspirations? (especially considering that it is hard to say what a long extinct dinosaur would actually look like).
Dude, this video was amazing, you can absolutely see how hard you worked on this. I really don't understand why it only has 8k views, it really should have milions of views. Really exited for the B2/W2 review and keep up the good work!
They took a lot of risks with this game and I really admire that. Even if not everything works, you can appreciate that they didn't play it safe and do exactly what we would've expected back in 2011.
To be honest when it first came out I wasn’t too keen on Black/White to start with but as I went through it, I really enjoyed it. I have a distinct memory of having 148 hours played on it.
Honestly, my only big complaint with the first Black and White games is just the isolated feel. Other games feel so good, open worlds, connections, but in Unova, prior to the revamp it got in Black 2 White 2, the game just felt so alone. Now connections to outside regions, and the entire post game felt like it was very sparsely populated. I don't know how to put the feeling completely into words, but hopefully you understand what I'm trying to describe. The game certainly has an isolated feel compared to the other games.
Sonic the Saiyan Yes absolutely. It’s sort of the “colder world” I mention in my pros section. Again it’s not for everyone, but I think because of that when everything pays off later on at N’s castle its so much more powerful and helps puts the smaller moments into a larger narrative
Oddly enough that was one of the best parts getting a foreign Pokemon via Dream World or GTS was special and it made making getting together with friends trading and necessary in order to get some exotic Pokemon (unless your a hacker). and a funny aside (I also consider BW 2 rooster a result of me releasing to many breedjeks into the wild)
I think it was meant to be a soft reboot of the series. I remember buying both games on the days they came out and being very excited. Everything was so new and amazing. I found the BW games had an ending in which - as someone with no friends who played- it was quite boring. I couldn’t develop my Black city/White forest. I also didn’t have WiFi at home so I never used the dream world or online battling.
Sonic the Saiyan Well Unova does take place in the United States, the other Gens took place in Japan so it was like a soft reboot. I personally liked it because it was a whole breath of fresh air and everything felt new.
In my opinion, the handholding was very helpful since this game back in 2011-2012 for me was the first game introduced to me. The handholding helped a lot to get me to figure out what to do quickly.
2019 and Gen 5 still remains my favorite. People can dislike it for dumb reasons but it'll never stop me and others alike from loving them 😎. Btw favorite starter is the Tepig line don't @me.
@16bit Classics nah black 2 cements black plots... Like you can't talk about plot without BOTH games... Also neo team plasma.... Return of n, fusion of kyurem and several minor story changes like iris becoming stronger than ever.. Also memory links
What a masterpiece. This video was one of the best videos that I've seen not just from you, but from the entirety of the internet. Fan-friggin-tastic job Stan. This was absolutely worth the long wait!
Thank you for talking about the story - it really helped me remember why Gen V's my favorite generation by far. Just hearing you go through the main plotline itself makes me deeply happy.
BW/B2W2 were great because of the emphasis on story. I'm tired of androgynous 5 year old protagonists with the same, safe run down minimal story we've seen over and over again.
Gen 5 is my personal favorite generation of Pokémon. It has my first journey, starter, and N. N is amazing. I got to watch the video first though. Thanks for getting this out Stan, see you in about an hour
"for the first time ever it doesn't take place in a Japanese region" You forgot about Orre! Takes place in an Arizona-inspired region. Came in Gen III for the GCN!
When I first saw Pokémon as a kid I thought it was boring as hell but then I picked up Pokémon Platinum and I started getting into Pokémon. I moved onto Pokémon Soul Silver afterwards but then when I first layed my eyes on Pokémon Black and White I instantly fell in love with the games. I loved the designs, I loved the soundtrack, I loved the story, I loved the innovations, I loved the characters, I loved everything about these games. It just makes me feel so nostalgic playing them all over again, they were my childhood and Pokémon Black and White have that unique and special magic that today’s Pokémon games will never have.
I honestly don't remember gen 5 having that good of a story. I guess I'll have to replay it. Solid review by the way. Despite black and white being my least favorite main Pokemon titles I can see that you had some good points on the positive things the titles did. I guess this shows that there are a lot of different reasons why someone can enjoy a Pokemon game.
Generation 5 is my all-time favorite generation, and it has been since Summer of 2011. Back in 2011, my love for Pokemon started to dwindle because I thought Generation 4 will the end of the series. Mostly because half of the Pokemon introduced were evolutions and pre-evolutions of older Pokemon, making it feel like a final end to the series. That's when I accidentally discovered the Generation 5 Pokemon, the Unova region, the Gym Leaders, games, and anime, and I was blown away by it! After years of seeing Generation 4 related stuff made the series grow stale in my eyes, and Generation 5 reinvograted my love and interest in Pokemon. Speaking of which, the Unova Pokemon are by far my favorite. I loved them so much that I bought a Math spiral notebook and drew every single Unova Pokemon in it. Many of the Pokemon from the Unova region are some of my favorites: Emboar; Haxorus; Hydreigon; Zoroark; Volcarona; Reshiram; Krookodile; Eelektross, Leavanny, Victini, etc. In April of 2014, I discovered the magic of emulators and Roms, and they allowed me to finally play the Pokemon games I wanted to play for so long. You see, I couldn't get it where I live, so emulators were my only way of playing them. But I didn't care, because I still got to experience them. I started with Heart Gold, but because of the nonsensical level scaling, it was impossible for me to complete. The only way I could is by using a cheat code to have infinite Rare Candies, but I didn't know about cheat codes, back then. After I quit Heart Gold, I started playing Black version, and it was without a doubt my favorite Pokemon experience. I loved the game so much I played it at least 4 times. Then I played Black 2 back in December of 2015, and I loved that too. All of the Generation 5 games take the spot as my favorite games in the Pokemon series. I love them even more then Heart Gold ans Soul Silver, or Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon. I cannot express how much I love these games, and to this day, they're still my favorites.
Admit it, the BW2 Iris battle was awesome, and also the fact that Cynthia actually changed her team in Unova was the only time something like that has ever happened. And let's face it, the Unova games play a serious role in the Pokemon canon. Without Unova, Ultra Necrozma might not exist. Unova is my favorite generation, but it's also the easiest to hate, so I always try to find reasons to defend it.
I don't comment often, but I wanted to say this game is my favorite Pokemon to date, and I'm glad I took the time to watch your very well put-together review of it.
If it weren't for these game I would probably never had played any pokemon games.Gen 5 is my fav pokemon generation sorely because of that reason.Amazing video there boi :)
I would love to see an in-depth review of BW2. They are by far the most content-packed sequels I've ever played. Platinum was brilliant, but BW2 truly trump it in terms of refreshing the region and giving players who played through BW something that felt like a truly new game. You still get the theme of conflict between both factions of Team Plasma while still heading a new direction.
I never thought of how deep N's character was till watching this video. In many ways him being such a complex character reminds me of Anakin or even The Arbiter. All three were raised their entire lives to think a certain way until reaching the unfortunate and ugly truths about their realities.
Josh's UA-cam Show No need to pay Josh! The BW2 review is being worked on with a real sense of purpose for the first time in a long time. I’m hoping to have it out around the time of Sword and Shields release, but it could be a few weeks after. Either way I promise it’s on the way and I’ll do my best to make it a good one! Thanks!
@@RandomTens Hey Stan! Just wanted to let you know that we all appreciate you! Take your time man! BW2 are crazy big pokemon games! It's a quality over quantity thing! We understand! Best of luck with it! Super excited!
Kyle Jay Plays Thanks Kyle! But truthfully the BW2 script was written and recorded almost a year ago now. It’s just been a matter of time finding the motivation to get through another hour-long video’s editing process! I’m about halfway done the edits atm, so hopefully I can finish it up in a month or so!

This review is a marathon, but I think it's one worth getting through. I have a personal connection to Generation 5. As a child, I used to play Ruby and Leaf Green but I didn't think much of it. Until a friend of mine in my freshman year of high school gave me his extra copy of Black 2. It was fantastic, and ever since then I have been a super fan of Pokémon. Because of this emotional attachment, I am rather blind to the criticisms, as I don't really see any cons even today when I replay games of Generation 5. The sprite animations are absolutely gorgeous, the world is rich and beautiful, and the Pokémon do have charm, despite what some fans of previous generations may say. I personally think Garbodor is better than Muk, and I think the Vanillite line isn't some horrible offense that is lazily designed. What's uncreative about making a garbage Pokémon? If you ask me, a garbage Pokémon is more creative than a three-headed bird or three Digletts with angry faces. Thank you for making this ridiculously good review, Stan. I'm glad someone out there has as much passion or more for the Generation 5 games as I do.
Hollywood Aleks Thank you for such a well thought out and beautiful comment! I’m really happy you enjoyed it and it seems that this review is making a lot of both doubters and fans of gen 5 pick up these gems again, which as a reviewer is the best possible reaction I ever could have asked for!
RandomTens Well I hope this video opens up at least a couple minds to Generation 5. I hear a lot of hate for it simply because of the ice cream Pokémon and the garbage Pokémon, but these games are so well made and I think every Pokémon fan should get through it if you haven't. Keep making great content, Stan!
@Hollywood Aleks Garbodor also completes the trash trio started in Gen 1, with Weezing being air, Muk is water, and Garbodor as solid. I love my little glad bag 💜
Hollywood Aleks I honestly addore Unova as region. I love gen 4 as well but Sinnoh feels bland at times compared to unova. So many memorable cities and areas in unova make ot stand out so much. I honestly love most of the pokemon in this gen as well. Trubbish and Vanillite are adorable, Chandelure is amazing (its my favorite mon from this gen) as is Scolipede. So much content past the main story, espacially Black and White 2. Just incredible games
Pokemon White was the one Pokemon game I was able to play at a young age. I have such fond memories of it and it introduced me to the series in such a special way, just before its transition to the 3DS and with a different approach from its predecessors. It has interesting characters, a great plot, cool graphics and arguably peak Pokemon gameplay. The whole soundtrack is unique and simply awesome too. Zekrom's still the best looking legendary and I wish he'd get more love along with Gen 5 entirely.
The reason Cilan and his brothers don't show is because Bianca is the one telling the gym leaders to rally and help but she never makes it all the way back to Striaton city on time.
Watching your reviews in order and really liked this one a lot, just very polished and excellent structure and writing. Gonna play this game on emulator now, basically never considered it.
Pokemon black and white are my best favorite these games helped me understand pokemon even more(I started playing Pokémon 2 years before black and white)but now I feel like these games are the best!!!
I dont think anyones said it already but in bw 2 in the memory feature 2 yrs before the sequel starts, the reason the first gym leaders weren't there was because they were beaten by the shadow triad and felt as if they weren't strong enough to be gym leaders, which is such an amazing explanation imo
Honestly, I bought white a decade ago with a 3DS… and shelved it. Just recently, I picked up my old 3DS and started a fresh play through. Not sure why, but I really loved it this time. For the first time in a long time, I felt the same as when I was a kid playing red on a game boy pocket. The Pokémon were new and interesting. The graphics a nice upgrade from gold on the game boy color. I’ve had to start commuting again recently, so it’s nice to end the day with a relaxing game full of gameplay options. You can grind your team, search for a specific Pokémon, go TM hunting, dive for treasure, play the main story, complete the Pokédex… there’s a lot to keep you busy without requiring a lot of time all at once. As a surprising twist to me, my favorite Pokémon ended up being… Lilligant. I needed sleep powder for my Thundurus catch strategy, so I caught a low level Petilil and raised it to be a key part of both elite four runs.
I think the Ghetsis reveal is actually less out there than previously thought. N is the symbolic and literal representation of the theme of Ideals and he serves as a cautionary tale of what happens when we let our ideals take control. N is a dreamer, a visionary. He believes Unova will be be better if people and pokemon seperate, if Team Plasma were in control, if he was champion. EmeraldZoroark I recently finished up Pokemon Conquest on my own time and now I really do need to play the MD series. Keep hearing the most excellent things, especially when it comes to the DS versions!
Dopy i did like the Pokemon in Black, at least some of them, but black and white is one of the worse games because the terrible post game, it was too short, and how short the game is. And its just so limited and broken
neon flashsparkotron limited, yes, but broken it is not. and you can’t call it the worst just from its post game, it’s story is great and it’s world is very in depth
Just wanted to say that these videos are great. Also, I took a 20 year break from the series only come back this year. It's been refreshing give in to my inner child.
Holy shit, it is actually really hard to find pokemon related videos with this much depth. This is one of the few pokemon-related videos that i didnt stop watching because it is not trying to appeal to a younger audience, you are just being honest and talking naturally without disrupting the main topic with bad attempts at humour.
Oddly enough the hand holding people complained about, helped me a ton at the time. I had a Japanese copy of Pokemon Black. Over all though I love the locations and when I got my english copy I found the story a treat, and going through the new locations in White just made it more enjoyable Over all I think gen 5 are among the best in the series. I wish they had kept the contests in these games. As for the Dream world it was amazing and fun in itself. I loved playing the mini games I just wish it wasn't limited. I loved exploring the locations and I want dive to be used more in future games. Exploring ruins in gen 5 was amazing.
I seriously want you to talk to me about Pokémon gen analysis all day long, what in the actual heck, what kind of curse have you bestowed upon your viewers, I cannot get enough of your voice and topic, I am addicted, help
Great video! Absolute respect for your analysis on the eyes of this gen compared to the previous ones; I never considered this at all and it was an interesting point to look into
HEY EVERYONE!

The theory behind his lost eye is simply fantastic, a story can be formed with such little information.
I mean sure, but iris does too in bw2 so...

not really
That's the thought process in the past. (Even at the time you wrote that). Gen 5 is the Gen most Pokemon fans won't shut up about on how it is the best thing ever made. It is not underrated nor is it overhated anymore.
This was truly amazing! I am incredibly satisfied with your overall positive outlook of such an underrated pair of games. You've got good taste.
Hi Truegreen7
Truegreen7
Yeah, this was an awesome video and was super interesting.
My personal favorite Generation of Pokemon honestly.
Underated?
@AkaInstincts most hate was towards the pokemon from what I could tell its underrated typically because you wont find many saying its their favourite gen, I think ive heard every gen but black/white so thats my guess
I really surprise myself with how much I enjoy a straight hour of somebody talking about one game.
Sometimes I'll just put on a playlist of a whole series retrospective of reviews and somehow not get bored.
Just noticed a few things
1.Gen 5's friends as rivals scenario felt natural in comparison to future games
2.The Railroading didn't stop you from exploring hidden caves or tombs if you wanted to break from the main journey
(can't wait for gen 6)
yeah, people who hate bw1 for being linear while liking gen 7 makes no sense at all to me. in gen 7 it's so much worse, you literally can't to anything but the main story (which isn't even half as well-written as gen5's) and besides in bw2 you have a lot more freedom and a crapton of things you can do. usum didn't even add that to sm
random guy gen 7 separates things which imo cheapens the experience because it locks you in but tricks you into believing the game must be big because 4 WHOLE islands.
Landis 97 yo don’t be dissing Gen 7, both 7 and 5 are great
Landis 27 well usum DID add more stuff to do
Unscrewed_UP to me it didn't cheapen it it felt pretty natural which I loved
What I love about these games is that they are *ACTUALLY DIFFICULT.* The Elite 4 will absolutely kick your ass if you don't prepare properly. Also I love Unova as a whole and the new Pokémon themselves.
Not really. I had absolutely no trouble with the elite four. In fact they were easy as hell. I’d say Gen 4 had a harder elite 4
No they weren't, I beat them first try. You're just shit at Pokemon
They were a little difficult on the second time.First time though not that much.

@@Zeus_Almighty
The nostalgia must cloud your judgement because Gen I games are nutorious for being incredibly broken in more ways than one. It's fine if you like Kanto itself, but there's no denying those games did not age well in the slightest amd you're probably better off playing FR/LG instead (which also have their issues, but not nearly on the level of R/B/G/Y).

In BW2 with memory link you can see why cilan, chily, and cress did not show up in the castle
Do not subscribe to this channel m8! Wait why didn’t they are they the shadow triad or is that false
Ohhh that would have been cooler if they were the shadow triad
Do not subscribe to this channel m8! I remember watching that scene and it made me so sad. Like there was literally nothing happy about it, it was just depressing. But it also made me appreciate the game more too because it dared to do something like that in a game that’s supposed to be all happy
I like the theory that Cilan was just lying to you to cover up their secret

I think BW is quite a bit more specialized. Pokémon games have always been very generic to have the widest appeal possible but BW asks very specific questions and has very powerful moments.
Not only that but it's also not obvious where they fit in. Generations I to IV are an evolutionary line; each game building on it's predecessor but BW is does not really build on DP and more is it's own thing.
so what your saying is...the plot makes it stand out?to me all the games stand out I think gen 7 is definitely some of the most unique ones
@32rush no it's not
@32rush how?

Pokémon Black and White gets most of it's dislikes from the Anime. Iris/Cilan were annoying. Ash had too many "rivals".
Stardust Hoopa Yeah it’s funny because if I ever did in-depth anime season review I’m sure gen 5 would get the worst reception of them all lol
The games are great. It's the anime that really sucks.
@Caitlyn Carvalho I would be very surprised, I don’t think animal rights activists have that large of a following

I'm a big dinosaur fan, and I also love adorkableness, and Archeops is an adorkable dinosaur X3

But it's important to note it's flaws, as EVERY pokemon game has it's flaws, and it's positives too! Eveyone has the right to make their opinion, what we must NOT do is throw hate at other gens, or blindly praise our favorite gens or call them perfect.

i hated the rivals
Two major things that basically made me dislike gen 5 were the graphics and horrible pokemon design. Graphics tried to be too fancy for the original DS system and it looked just weird and awkward. I hated it.
And as I said the pokemon designs were HORRIBLE. Gen 5 introduced so crazy power creep that many old pokemons dropped tiers in usage. Not only the power creep but also most of the new gen 5 pokemon looked weird. Obviously there are few exceptions but generally I would say that 80% of gen 5 pokemons looks ugly and/or stupid.
So yeah these are my opinion based reasons to not like gen 5.
archeops is also one of my favorite pokemon overall, and it's so underrated. it's just so funny and adorable but at the same time kinda cool too? lol
The only thing and I mean the ONLY thing, people should hate on in this generation, is the anime. It was Ash's worst adventure.

Slowpokes who got their tails cut off by Team Rocket in gen 2: Am I a joke to you?
Unova is actually the highest populated region to date.
Oddly enough that was one of the best parts getting a foreign Pokemon via Dream World or GTS was special and it made making getting together with friends trading and necessary in order to get some exotic Pokemon (unless your a hacker).
and a funny aside

You forgot one con of Black and White...........THE ANIME!!!
MrGojira95 that never existed
Hot take: It isn't that bad
We’re talking about the games, not the generation as a whole.
we don't talk about that
I though the Anime Movies Of Black and White were really good
2019 and Gen 5 still remains my favorite. People can dislike it for dumb reasons but it'll never stop me and others alike from loving them 😎. Btw favorite starter is the Tepig line don't @me.
I’m early let me make a joke...
Emboar’s typing
The Epic Goodra
Gonna need a burn heal for that fire...them's fighting words! (before you roast me, not an Emboar fan)
Gallantmon4 LoL not gonna roast ya I’m a emboar fan but I’m okay with making fun of the typing
Nooo Mergawd Can't Change Name After 90 Days T-T he’s my favourite too but I dislike the typing of it
The Epic Goodra how about Emboar itself
The Epic Goodra Yeah, Emboar disappointed me, especially because it was the least entertaining pun out of its entire evolution tree.
Black 2 and White 2 were close to perfection in a Pokemon game
I agree.
@16bit Classics nah black 2 cements black plots... Like you can't talk about plot without BOTH games... Also neo team plasma.... Return of n, fusion of kyurem and several minor story changes like iris becoming stronger than ever.. Also memory links
only thing missing imo was the OG BW protag not returning like how Red did in the Johto games.
What a masterpiece. This video was one of the best videos that I've seen not just from you, but from the entirety of the internet. Fan-friggin-tastic job Stan. This was absolutely worth the long wait!
Royboy Thanks so much buddy! It took forever but now months later it seems o made the right call in not rushing it out haha!
I LOVED TRIPLE BATTLES GOD I WANT THEM BACK
The mom this time around tho. Smokin hot.

Guess who won't be going to the cinema todayyyy
Put the popcorn on, kiddos. It's gonna be a wild ride
Thank you for talking about the story - it really helped me remember why Gen V's my favorite generation by far. Just hearing you go through the main plotline itself makes me deeply happy.
I almost forgot how disgustingly awesomelooking Zekrom was 😍😍😍
BW/B2W2 were great because of the emphasis on story. I'm tired of androgynous 5 year old protagonists with the same, safe run down minimal story we've seen over and over again.
Yo what's up future man.
Gen 5 is my personal favorite generation of Pokémon. It has my first journey, starter, and N. N is amazing. I got to watch the video first though. Thanks for getting this out Stan, see you in about an hour
Totally Totodile let me know what you think! Really curious given how much you love this generation!
This is seriously insane bro. Extreme props for keeping me entertained for an hour while talking about 8 year old game.
Even though HG/SS are my favourite Games, Generation 5 is my favourite Generation of PoKemon.
"With awe inspiring land marks like the Giant Chasm."
*Proceeds to look directly into the smallest "chasm" in the game*
hm muchly impressed
"for the first time ever it doesn't take place in a Japanese region"
You forgot about Orre! Takes place in an Arizona-inspired region. Came in Gen III for the GCN!
First main series region not based on Japan
FINALLY! The Stanpede has found an oasis in the drought of videos
Luke Detering ehhhh good one
Oh.
A feature presentation.
Time to grab me some popcorn!
Driftveil city's theme is probably one of the best pieces of music in the fifth gen
I hate both of the gym layout tho...
Ok, when is the Black and White 2 review coming out, 2 years (Pun Intended)
comical
Bro it's spring 2019 let alone midsummer 2018
Make it late summer 2019
Admit it, the BW2 Iris battle was awesome, and also the fact that Cynthia actually changed her team in Unova was the only time something like that has ever happened. And let's face it, the Unova games play a serious role in the Pokemon canon. Without Unova, Ultra Necrozma might not exist. Unova is my favorite generation, but it's also the easiest to hate, so I always try to find reasons to defend it.
what do you mean by unova playing a huge role
I don't comment often, but I wanted to say this game is my favorite Pokemon to date, and I'm glad I took the time to watch your very well put-together review of it.
If it weren't for these game I would probably never had played any pokemon games.Gen 5 is my fav pokemon generation sorely because of that reason.Amazing video there boi :)
I was waiting for this! Gen 5 is my favourite!
Chloe Johnson Gen 5 is bad
Kevin RICH I respectfully disagree.
Chloe Johnson all right, its maybe not bad but its definitly not the best gen/game ... maybe its your favorite and I accept that
Kevin RICH that’s fair. Everyone has different opinions.
Nooo Mergawd Can't Change Name After 90 Days T-T sure for me, Gen 4 is my favorite
I agree.
I never thought of how deep N's character was till watching this video. In many ways him being such a complex character reminds me of Anakin or even The Arbiter. All three were raised their entire lives to think a certain way until reaching the unfortunate and ugly truths about their realities.
I just binged all of your reviews and got really sad when I saw you didn't have more. I will literally pay you to do the rest of the games
Thanks!
RandomTens well I’m that case, I’m sure you’ll appreciate the ad revenue I will bring for ya!
@@RandomTens Hahaha its all good man! I already know its gonna be a great video! Don't stress over it! And if you ever need motivation we'll all be here to cheer you on and help you out when ya need us!
Have a blessed day bro! #TeamStan #Random10s! #YouCanDoIt
I'm so glad I subscribed! There are so many like-minded, caring, considerate, and passionate Pokemon fans on this channel! Happy Hunting, indeed! ;)
Iris is the most powerful gym leader because she can say the n-word
General Kenobi *fuck*
Sabando.USMC Nuggets?
God dammit
What about Lenora?
6:59 the slowpokes want their tails back
Pokemon black and white are my best favorite these games helped me understand pokemon even more(I started playing Pokémon 2 years before black and white)but now I feel like these games are the best!!!
SHOUT IT TO THE ROOFTOPS! POKÉMON BLACK/WHITE REVIEW IS HERE! THIS MEANS WORLD PEACE!
All these future plans means that N is able to easily manipulated by other people as he can not see what is happening to him in the present.
*ranks ost as best of the ds era*
Play Mystery Dungeon. Go ahead. I’ll wait.
But seriously, great review. I can tell you put a lot of effort into this behemoth.
EmeraldZoroark I recently finished up Pokemon Conquest on my own time and now I really do need to play the MD series. Keep hearing the most excellent things, especially when it comes to the DS versions!
@@RandomTens Gen 3 and Gen 4 misery dungeon games are master pieces
Um, did you mean, best Pokemon Generation? *cough*
Dopy
Um, did you mean, no? *cough*
Ibrahim Hussain your opinion is shit
Dopy i did like the Pokemon in Black, at least some of them, but black and white is one of the worse games because the terrible post game, it was too short, and how short the game is. And its just so limited and broken
beast from the east no he is right
neon flashsparkotron limited, yes, but broken it is not. and you can’t call it the worst just from its post game, it’s story is great and it’s world is very in depth
Longer than Johnnys Sonic 06 Review
Gen t was my entry game in 5th grade. I absolutely loved it. The music is easily my favorite part
I seriously want you to talk to me about Pokémon gen analysis all day long, what in the actual heck, what kind of curse have you bestowed upon your viewers, I cannot get enough of your voice and topic, I am addicted, help
Hold the fuck up... the psychic Élite 4 debuted in gen 4?!
My fucking god i love this gen with all its small details
Great video! Absolute respect for your analysis on the eyes of this gen compared to the previous ones; I never considered this at all and it was an interesting point to look into
In fact this was my favorite in depth review you have made and it wasn't even my favorite generation. Good work
