  • There's a town in between Columbus and Dayton, which gets rave reviews from just about everyone who visits. Yellow Springs has history, art, nature and an overwhelming sense that people can be whoever they want to be.
I spent the day there on July 4th. It was a celebration of independence unlike any I've ever experienced.

Come along and travel the world with Richard Green. Retiring in the spring of 2023, I am embarking on full-time world travel. I'm going solo, but the idea here is not to focus on me so much. It's about the places and the people along the way.
The title Old, Alone and Far From Home might initially come across as a sad state of being. My mission is to show that it's just the opposite.

I grew up nextdoor in fairborn and frequented YS multiple times a week as a kid, mountain biking in the parks, riding on the bike trails, and eating at the local spots. Now that I have a family of my own, it would be a dream to live in and make an actual home out of the “home away from home” that this place served as for me when I was young. You captured the beauty of YS perfectly 💞

Yellow Springs is my home town but it has changed. The village is what is known as a tourist trap. It is too expensive for many people who grew up there to continue to live there.

But, you have staved off the sprawl of the village and from getting swallowed by Fairborn. Whitehall Farm could have sprouted houses instead of crops?

It seemed like most businesses were open, but I'm sure there were a few that were closed down for the day. The brew pubs were the ones that I was disappointed about. Things can change from year to year, however. I thought the parade was a lot of fun!

Lived in Yellow Springs for a few years in the late 90s while I was in the Air Force. It was a wonderful town, and I wish I had stayed longer. Rumor has it that Ye Olde Trail Tavern was frequented by Charles Manson before he went to Cali.

I am so glad they called it yellow springs Village because it is not a town it is a village my grandparents lived there for many years why the Glen Helen was being built my grandfather Carmelo riccardi help build The swinging Bridge in the Glen Helen close to Antioch college there is a big huge Boulder Rock with his name. And he helped Mr burge do just about everything you can imagine my grandfather also built the steps that were made out of stone like you know they say that Jesus was a carpenter know he was a stone Mason that's what my grandfather was very good at he could make the steps all out of stone beautiful beautiful he did so many things you would really have to look his name up and go and find everything he did and he wasn't German he was rip Carmelo riccardi.

Live 5 min away. Better be rich to live there. Every house is half mil minimum and up. This hasn't changed much since the cost of housing went up. Don't get me wrong, it's a cool town. I Go there regularly. But the vast majority of the people you see in the town at the stores are visiting.

Oh it was not only the first black college to integrate in America it also accepted gays people just didn't say anything to them or they weren't called any names everyone minded their own business people knew who were gay sometimes they were more flamboyant some of them and you could tell others so you just didn't talk about people you just didn't hossip. I like that, we can all learn a lesson there from yellow springs Village, don't gossip. And I am proud of my grandfather Carmelo riccardi who helped build the Glen Helen and did a lot of things around Antioch college like the stone steps and The swinging Bridge if it is still there I do not know but he did build a swinging bridge and so many other things to make the places beautiful from Antioch college all the way through into Glen Helen. His name is on a big huge Boulder by Antioch college. I was only nine years old when he passed and I was just learning everything he had built, that's been 50 years or more.❤

It’s a “diverse” place and they like it that way, provided the white folks who have the BLM signs in their yards don’t actually have a black person within a mile of their property. You’d also be fine there as long as you are pro-illegal immigration, vaccine mandates, believe J6 was an actual insurrection and think MSNBC is legitimate news. These are people that can live in a fantasy land while being protected against people like Joe Biden because they live in a “red” state. Their lives and livelihood are also protected for the same reason. Move to Gavin Newsome’s California if you want to be a blue speck in different kind of red state (the communist variety) and see how that turns out for you. Gorgeous place though, but there are a lot of gorgeous places in Ohio.

You did a great job capturing the colorful aspects of Y.S. I'm a permanent resident, my husband and I are homeowners and have raised our kids here---went through the whole 9 yards of decades of involvement. But now, while I still appreciate the friendships developed over the years, and SOME of the atmosphere here---I am not on board with about 98% of its political stances and attitudes. Some days, I would just love to wrap up all the "blue dot" idiots and chuck them into a communist run country and see what they think about their wokeness then. Yes, a pretty harsh statement, I know---but---you don't know what it's like to live here, surrounded by their clap-trap and deluded preaching. lol!! Your film footage of Clifton Gorge and Glen Helen was gorgeous---spot on! John Bryan State Park connects Clifton Gorge and Glen Helen---so we have a marvelous band of natural woodland beauty that is preserved here. 😊

YS’s political culture has been a part of its identity since its founding. Between being the first to pass anti-discrimination laws for a town of its size, coexisting with natives in the area during its founding, and being a welcoming point for black people when neighboring towns like Fairborn were still sundown-towns even for black service members and their families, of course the atmosphere has a “blue” aura. Why does that surprise you? It’s not a recent movement, it’s been going on for over 200 years in YS.
