Lima, Peru: Possibly the Best City in South America

- Obviously, I haven't been to them all, but after spending a month in Lima, Peru, it would not surprise me if it is not the best city in all of South America. The City Centre is historic and stately. Shanty towns such as Villa El Salvador are as real as it gets. Tha Larco Museum is one of the top such places on the continent. The Miraflores and Barranco neighborhoods compare favorably to places anywhere.
Join me in this video, as I take a look at numerous aspects of Lima and then decide for yourself if it is a place you could visit or live!
Music provided by Epidemic Sound.
Having retired in 2023, I now travel full-time, seeing places all around the world. My idea for UA-cam is to make the videos more about the places and people along the way, than about me. I hope that the experience for you is both entertaining and educational. Perhaps you will come away from my channel with ideas about places you would like to visit or be inspired to forge your own way.
I travel slowly, spending four or five weeks in each destination. Hopefully, that will allow me to go beyond the surface to find the essence of each location. By the end of 2024, I will have visited 14 countries and five of the seven continents. Come along for the journey!
Beautiful video! Beautiful city! Beautiful country! Thanks for sharing! 🙏
You have that right! Peru and Lima are awesome!
I appreciate you watching!
Every year we travel to Peru, we fall in love with the wonders of this country and especially with its delicious food. Cusco, Puno, Ayacucho, Arequipa and Lima: Miraflores, Barranco and other cities have their appeal and are a delight for our eyes. We were last year in OXAPAMPA and POZUZO for 5 days. It is another experience since it is a different place from Lima and the other states we were able to taste the best butter and meat and good coffee etc., since this city was created by Austro German people.. I recommend them to you... Thanks for the excellent videos, we enjoyed it very much.
There is so much good information in your comments! Thank you for adding to the experience for people who choose to watch my video.
Try to visit Trujillo city, you can see the Museum of the Chan Chan culture, Huaca of the Sun and Moon, the North of Perú´s beaches and their food
WOW i love your video, thanks for share
That is so nice of you to say! I am so glad that you see some value in the video.
How interesting that there are so many people of Chinese descent in Peru. I never would have guessed that! I am learning so much from your travels. Thanks for sharing!
It is an interesting mix of cultures. Now, to be honest, I think the first Chinese were more like indentured servants than people acting totally of their own free will.
Is not only Chinese descent in Peru , there are others Italian, Spain, and others in Peru there are a city called Pozzuso this is a German and danese colony is a beautiful place is a Peruvian city pozzuso but all descent are from Germannies and Danese and they keep that culture . Peru 🇵🇪 is mix of cultures immigrants.
@@oldaloneandfarfromhome you are right, chinese start coming here for bussines but after Ramon Castilla free the slaves the farm houses was in need so the spaniards start to bring the chinese, after the 1st world war we have the second wave of chinese immigrants and after the 2nd world war we have a huge wave of japanese immigrants, thats why in southamerica Brasil has the largest group of japanese immigrants and Peru has the second large group but is the 1st in chinese ppl
They say 10% of the Peruvian population have Chinese ethnic backgrounds. The Chinese people arrived in Peru over 150 years ago. They are one the most industrious business people in Peru. The same with the Japanese people. They both prioritize EDUCATION. They are one of the best immigrants that Peru has had.
@@NormaAbad-rq6pn Absolutely true! I'm Peruvian from the jungle, (Pucallpa) and the Japenese even created a technology industry. There are Peruvian technology brands like "Miray" from the Hiraoka group, 100% Japanese/Peruvian capital.
Welcome to the Perú 🇵🇪
I certainly enjoyed my time in Peru!
thank you so much for showing our great capital !
You are very welcome! I certainly fell in love with your capital!
I hope you can have a great time in my City Lima, you are always welcome Sir 🙏
Thank you so much! I will have to return one day!
Until now, this is the best video that I've ever seen about Lima, obviously my city hasn' t the first sights like Mexico City or Buenos Aires cities best ranked but the mixed of old and new sights, the closer to the Pacific Ocean , and more than 3,000 years of history, remember, near Lima, we have the oldest town in the New World, Caral, also Lima was the most important city in South America until eighteenth century, thanks for your dedication to Lima
That is so nice of you to say! There is so much to like about Lima!
Thank you for watching.
5500 years of history.
Buenos Aires is also very nice but Lima is overlooking the Ocean, probably the only nice capital city overlooking the ocean, also their nice neighborhoods remind you of the best in California.
Lima is not for beginners!
I am going to have to schedule a trip to Buenos Aires, so that I can compare. I have heard great things.
It will be hard to beat Lima, though!
Indeed, Miraflores in Lima reminded me of a blend between Santa Monica and Malibu due to its green cliffs overlooking the Pacific Ocean. Lima is a wonderful city, as vast as LA, and its traffic can get as jammed as in LA. I stayed in Miraflores for the first week, and for the second week, I was at an Airbnb in Barranco. The traffic could get hectic. Both Miraflores and Barranco are the safest and best options to stay in Lima. They have the best hotels, restaurants, shopping centers, bars, etc., all easily accessible by walking distance.
Great sharing, new friend ❤
Thank you! I am fortunate to be able to travel and do these videos!
Wonderful!
That is so nice of you to say!
Great video, Richard. 👍
Thanks! I had good subject material!
Great stuff Richard!
Thank you quite kindly!
Great Video Richard! Where are you heading now? Larco Museum is very interesting, I remember that erotic prehispanic collection, it was very unique. Hope you can make a future trip back to Peru to visit other places, its a wonderful country!
Thanks so much! Peru is definitely on my list for a return visit at some point. Right now, I am in Paraguay. In about a week, I'll head over to Bolivia.
@@oldaloneandfarfromhome Richard there is some turmoil going on in Bolivia, there was an attempt to takeover the government
Thanks! I have been monitoring the situation this afternoon and evening. For now, the soldiers and general involved have stood down. The situation will bear watching as we move forward.
Wauuu Lima Perú Is a nice city !!! ❤
Lima is wonderful! One of the best places that I have visited in my travels.
Thanks for watching and taking the time to leave a comment!
It’s great to showcase the best aspects of the city.
I agree and there is certainly plenty of great aspects about Lima!
Lima is like South of California with a touch of Spanish empire and Egypt, (and yeah, there are slums too, I mean, it is still Latin America you know?)
I thought a lot about the Southern California vibe, as I spent time in Barranco and Miraflores.
I am glad that you took the time to comment!
Beautiful video. Thanks.
You are welcome!
I appreciate you watching!
Lo bonito de la Costa verde es que hay tanto playas de arena como de piedras y muchos restaurantes con vista al mar.
Eso es ciertamente cierto. Me encantaron las playas de guijarros. Eran mis favoritos.
Thanks for sharing. It's nice to see you covered almost all Lima faces in a video. This august I'm going hiking to Huaraz (maybe some mountainbiking too), beautiful lakes and mountains.
un abrazo amigo!
You are welcome! I was afraid that I didn't cover enough of the main areas in the city. Your comment makes me feel better about my effort!
I'm Peruvian and everyone is welcome to Lima!!! I was not born in Lima (I'm from the jungle, Pucallpa) but Lima is charming, chaotic and beautiful with the most beautiful mixtures, the region between Asia and the new world, its diversity is reflected in its famous gastronomy, being the gastronomic capital of the Americas, Lima offers the best restaurants in the world.
I love to hear Peruvians speak so highly of Lima! I certainly found it to be a very enchanting place!
Thank you for watching!
This’s an excellent video, very realist without extremes and stereotypes
Congratulations!
I’ll suscribe to your channel
Lima is a very special place, for me the most beautiful city in South America! It has first-class gastronomy, my girlfriend is from Lima, a beautiful Peruvian of Japanese descent, Lima was the place where I saw the largest number of Asians speaking perfect Spanish, there are large communities of Peruvians with Chinese and Japanese ancestors, a very pleasant place.
Lima is one of the best places I have visited on any continent! I loved my time there!
Thank you for taking time to leave a comment.
Great video, love it.
I appreciate you saying that!
Thanks for watching and for commenting!
Lima es una hermosa ciudad !!
¡Es uno de mis lugares favoritos que he visitado!

Magdalena del Mar, now declared as the safest district in the whole city of Lima. The rank is as follow : 5° Jesus Maria, 4° Miraflores, 3° San Borja , 2° San Isidro 1° Magdalena del Mar. Barranco is pretty safe too, but is not in the top 5 . . .
I fully enjoyed my time in Lima!
Thank you for watching!
I thought it was a giant Shantytown. Do they respect traffic laws, bikers, pedestrians? That's a sign.
I only spent a short period of time in Villa El Salvador, if that's what you mean.
Looks like Cape Town South Africa
I thought parts of it also had a very West Coast, California vibe.
Thank you for watching!
Yes, California vibes, I’m from Lima, but I live in the Bay Area right now and Southern California reminds me Lima, I feel like home there 😊👍🏽
Good video!
I appreciate you saying so!
If you are still in Lima, take a look around San Isidro, it is a very orderly, clean place and it is the financial center of the capital
I heard about San Isidro, but I never got a chance to go there.
Thank you for the tip!
Bienvenidos Gringo
Gracias!
@@oldaloneandfarfromhome You should check out San Juan de Miraflores and Villa El Salvador, but only if you want to get to know the real Lima. Enjoy
No seas clasista brother.
Hello Richard. Lima is a discovering . The city has been improving on every aspect. In the 80's and 90's due to Shining Path and MRTA was an abandoned place. But after 2k year , is been improving its beauty . Also abundance of recycled water for watering parks and gardens. Top knotch restaurants + milions of soles invested in restauration of squares , plazas, colonial streets, etc. Besides this, it is a cheap city and safer than most of others cities in Latin America. Peru has one of the lowest homicide rate as 6 per 100k people, data from 2023.
I was totally enthralled with Lima. I'm sure at this point, that it will only continue to get better and better each year!
I am so happy that you thought enough to leave a comment. Thank you so much!
@@oldaloneandfarfromhome Thanks to you . . . 👏👏👏
3:31 yeah, I’m not gonna do this shit again…
Informative, but it would do you well to work on your Spanish pronunciation. Also, the music is salsa which has little to do with Peru. Save it for Puerto Rico video.
I know that I certainly struggle with pronunciation, in many of the places to which I travel.
It was still a great video. I'm just a picky sob who likes languages. Look forward to seeing your other videos. Stay safe.
@@oldaloneandfarfromhome So called "musica criolla" is the real peruvian music that represents Lima culture. You could make a search on youtube. Its thousands times better than salsa which (as the other dude said, has nothing to do with peru). Your spanish pronunciation is ok for a foreigner and its pretty understandable for us locals, but it would be nice if you improve it a lil.
I have to use music that I have licensed and that can be a little limiting. I try to get as close as I can, but sometimes I miss the mark.
I will continue to work on pronunciation!
Thank you for watching and taking the time to comment!
@@oldaloneandfarfromhome You're doing great, mate! The video is amazing, and the editing is top-notch. There will always be picky people, you know how it is lol.
que no vengan los maniaticos del orden ni a los que no les gusta ver perros callejeros
Había algunos lugares que eran caóticos. Donde estaba, no vi tantos perros callejeros.
Best city un South America ? No way José... Best city in all Latín America is Buenos Aires in Argentina
I have not yet made it to Buenos Aires. I'm going to have to schedule a trip, so that I can make the comparison for myself.
Thank you for taking the time to leave a comment!
@@oldaloneandfarfromhomeMr. Fernando Palazuelo, cousin of the Spanish king Juan Carlos, said in lima, you could easily walk five centuries in one block of beautiful architecture, baroque, arabesque, etc, in the meantime Buenos Aires, pretty much two hundreds fifty years old, of yes, great buildings more similar to New York City, before the invention of the amazing American skycrapers,...Lima is beautiful, without a doubt, besides was the mother capital for almost two centuries of all the Spanish colonies in South America, you couldn't be wrong Sir,.... greetings from the USA,....
Jajaj se pico....😂😂😂tranki....
Buenos Aires, as a city, is vast and indeed has a vibrant cultural life, with theater shows and concerts happening all year round. Buenos Aires and Lima are entirely different, yet they are both my favorite capitals in Latin America. Buenos Aires is unique and vibrant with so much to do. However, the summers can be unbearable, causing every sensible person to flee to Mar de Plata or Punta del Este to enjoy the beach. The only aspect of Buenos Aires that I don't appreciate is its lack of an ocean, unlike Lima. For those of us who grew up in a place like Sydney, Australia, we do appreciate big cities close to the beach.
Buenos Aires is the closest thing to Madrid, Spain, it doesn't have a magical touch of Egypt, Spain and Asia like there is in Lima.
Not DE LA UNION , it’s pronounced De La: Ooh knew On. Now say it fast all together. 2:11
