I had a C Evolution in which I rode for 23 thousand miles (37000 km) before a deer prematurely sent it to the recyclers. It was a fantastic bike that I even preferred to ride it over my K1600GTL (which is still running with 75k miles). As far as BMW electric vehicles, I had the Active E, then an i3 BEV then the C Evolution. Those three were very reliable vehicles. Maintenance was pretty much hooking up a computer for software updates and that was it. Had to buy tires, they are consumables. Brakes? Never changed brake pads in over 200k miles of electric driving/riding. My i3 with over 109k miles still has original pads in great condition, as are the disks. Regen braking is a genius of engineering. Despite the price premium of these EVs, the economic breakeven point compared to a similarly equiped gas vehicle is reached rather quickly, especially in these days of expensive petrol. I could go on and on but here is the quick rundown on EVs in general: if your use case (commuting, fun riding, etc) fits the capabilities of an EV, and you see yourself having to use the EV a lot, then get the EV. If you won't use an electric vehicle for whatever reason, then you won't recoup that price premium. If you end up using an electric vehicle all the time, you'll end up enjoying the ride quality while saving money for operation and maintenance which goes into your fancy cafe spending account. Great review on the CE 04. I may look for one.

Thanks for your video Matt, good on you I got a few chuckles out of today's review. These have actually arrived in Australia for sale I have noted. The rear wheel looks like it came off a Citroen of the 1960's
I'm a jewelry designer and I completely agree with you about the aesthetics. They could have done better but the engineering makes it all worth getting one of these if you have the money.
i never thought it would take so long for the future to catch up with the past. design engineers have been designing futuristic transportation for the past 100 years. its nice to finally live in the future, that was designed, planned; and perfected so long ago.
I had the c Evo as a courtesy bike and loved it, this thing gets me very excited. I must admit though being from Manchester I think the solid wheels are a terrible idea from a security stand point. With something that expensive I'd want to be able to chain it to something secure.

Nice Report, as a matter of fact I drove this thing for a week and I have some additions to your findings. First of all I so totally agree with the downpoints you mentioned - for a very expensive toy the materials are crap and the optional case ? Boy oh boy, who ever designed this should be punished corporally every morning bevore breakfast - it even steals the second seat - unbarable. I found the driving noise rather annoying and it's that cheap belt making a very high-pitched singing sound that enerves you after a few days. The ride for me (1,93m) was rather uncomfortable but at my height you feel very lucky if you find something that fits your size (my seat on the Honda Africa Twin is raised 20cm). The good things are really good and you forgot to mention the best feature of them all: IT HAS REVERSE ! And this is very unique and oh how much better your park and handle your quarter ton Moped in small areas with this reverse. I tried some speedtests in reverse but it's actually really scary to give it the full beans in that direction ;-) Finally it did not stick with me, the price was too steep and the pain in my back after a week reminded me to wait for a more suitable model.
Yes, I think it helps with the overall massing and proportions, especially with the rear end. The economical box shape goes well with the horizontal and vertical lines in the side view.
NO, mate. The back wheel RESONATES with the functional aesthetic. The back side is all about pushing and yes, it might be basic but its unadorned demeanor promises nothing but push. Am I wrong? I haven't ridden it. Now, color!?! Nah. It's antithetical to it's no-nonsense design. HOW MUCH is it? I want one....I think. Anyway, I don't like plastic either but I LOVE range, bro. I don't like heavy weight but I LOVE being glued to the road. Marvelous articulation of these trade offs, thank you sir. Love the cuts (edits), love the sensibility and the humor, dude. Got my sub.

Just watched this again seeing I watched Don review the CE04 earlier today. I agree about the cheap plastic facing you below the dash. Looks dreadful. Such a contrast with the beautiful dash. I was pleasantly surprised quite a nice a review. Normally a review of a German vehicle by someone of the Jeremy Clarkson vintage is a little like the "Don't mention the war" episode of Fawlty Towers,
Excellent review. Thank you. My wife and I both drive electric cars and I have always found managing the range very doable as the vast majority of our trips are less than the range and the vehicle can be fully charged at home before leaving. My summer commute is a Honda X-ADV. I recently ordered the CE04 as a replacement and am very much looking forward to it. I agree that the top box looks ugly on what is otherwise a stunning bike, which is a shame. I hope that it is too niche and distinctive to be of interest to thieves; with luck the electronics will make it hard to start and the break for parts market will be limited.
Pretty good review although you failed to mention how comfortable or not the very slightly padded plank was,as someone who rides a conventional BMW motorcycle I wouldn’t have that thing as a present, just saying.
I saw many e-scooters in China when I visited there 12 years ago. They have shoebox size swappable rechargeable battery. Seems like very popular. I think they banned gas-powered scooters. The escooters were priced less than US$1000.
I really wish they maxed-out on the range tho. I would put up with the extra weight for an extra 50miles. Would take it into a new realm entirely. Could easily fit a decent battery in the helmet box as an extra.
Exactly. Rode one and the range should be better, otherwise a nice scooter. :) Here is my test ride if interested ua-cam.com/video/ImR74bXMOjs/v-deo.html
It is a futuristic toy, not for everyone but for some. The price is in line with just said. So, for those who would like to be "in". These customers will pay for it. I rode one. Drop by to check it, if are interested.
I would buy it, if they added another battery in the huge space below the seat, to give it another 80miles of range, and if they sold it at the same price as this one. Too bad for them , they could have a huge headstart with this, but it's just too limited in range.
The back box would not be kind to the aerodynamic profile, either. The shortness of bikes is what contributes to a lot of their drag, so why would BMW add a cube back there? At least have a pad for a passenger as compensation. It looks so dated on something so new. I like designs that are not afraid to be honest about what they are, and that is certainly what they've done with the CE 04. However, to harp on about aerodynamics (again), I don't see the angularity as a big help. It won't matter too much for scooters, since they're more associated with practicality and fashion than high speeds, but this will matter for faster performance models. Kawasaki in particular seems to be making their new sports bikes as pointy as possible, instead of the shapes of the ZX-14.
Nice review :) When I spent 10 yrs working and living in Bavaria, flitering through traffic to get to the front of the lights (or anyhere else) was a big no no. This was why not many of my biker work collegues used their bikes for work as there was no speed advantages over a car ! Big shame as the roads were great for 2 wheelers :)
I wish we had the same law in Switzerland because that’s only the start, in Geneva as soon as they have seen you have seen them they cut your priority, they use their vulnerability as a right of way
@@marcbungener1877 So what. Getting angry over motorcycles skipping the line is the same as getting angry at someone skipping the supermarket line, only they didn't buy anything. You take up the space of at least six motorcycles with your car
I like them , other manufacturers now do top boxes and larger screens, it would be ideal where I live as I live on a island and if I went the full 50 kms one way I’d be 10 km under the sea , and the top speed you can go is a lucky 50 mph , got overtaken by one the other week on our only dual carriage way ( all 1/4 mile of it ) very impressive 😊😊👍👍 ps been driving ice motorbikes for 50 yyand there’s nothing wrong with ev motorbike s 😊👍👍

The Kamm effect means it might acrtually reduce drag.
Great review Mate 👏👌
Nice review :) When I spent 10 yrs working and living in Bavaria, flitering through traffic to get to the front of the lights (or anyhere else) was a big no no. This was why not many of my biker work collegues used their bikes for work as there was no speed advantages over a car ! Big shame as the roads were great for 2 wheelers :)
We have the same stupid laws in Denmark - filtering is considered reckless irresponsible driving
The solid wheels also seem like a great idea for locks (not). Disc lock also seems hard to fit.
its electric and has an alarm system
BMW fixed this by making it weigh 2 tonnes so it cant be stolen.
Good report
