For the patrick one i think there was an attempt made to make areas were you can be these characters already without jarringly changing them but was scrapped for an unknown reason

5:16 Reminds me of a theory I had that the intended order of levels in the final hub area was changed late in development. Despite Spongebob's dream requiring no spatulas and being immediately accessible upon defeating robot Patrick, not only is it the furthest down on the level select screen of the nine major areas, but it also features two enemies that have their intro cutscenes in _later_ levels.
I think Dream was originally entered from Spongebob's bed but was changed later. The whole level is a bit bizzare. You don't actually need bubble bowl or cruise missile at all, and having cruise missle unlocked for the dream Krusty Krab challenge kinda cheeses it.
I noticed the weird level order too! Maybe Kelp Forest was the "Free" level, Dutchman's Graveyard had the 50 Spatulas, and Spongebob's Dream required 60 Spatulas at one point in development. This might've been changed because Kelp Forest is kind of a notoriously hard level.
Did you know that the Tubelet enemies' color of fire changes depending on the date set on the console your game is running on. Red white and blue for the 4th of July Green for Saint Patricks Day. Orange for Halloween Pink for April 1st And rainbow for New Years Day. There are others, but those are the ones I know of.
You should have mentioned that the mermelair computer actually uses a Barnacle Boy model inside of it as the trigger to speak to it, and if you do a spin next to the computer you can see his head pop out!

There's something about the way this game was made that's so fascinating. The way they organized the files, the way it was coded, the weird mistakes here and there. I love how you can see the rush to get it done in certain places. And the remnants of what was can be seen in the backgrounds and even in the models because the game is so ginormous for a licensed title. I would love to know what other stuff from this is hidden and/or was considered in production. I bet there are elements of the game they made that isn't able to be seen in the files that still exist somewhere, or the other half of the code that allows certain objects or values to work that are still present in the manufactured copies of the game. BTW great video, this even had a couple I didn't know, and this is like my favorite game I've played for literal hundreds of hours. It's fantastic. It's very Mario 64-like in it's production and history. Even the smallest code has some kind of interesting things going on. Like the part about the number values triggering the music in Sand Mountain was crazy and it's cool to know why that happens. Easily the best licensed game of all time, at least to me. Crazy what they managed to pull off in what was probably a little more than a year or two.
Another fact about the Realistic Fish Head announcer: He's physically present in all of the boss fights, just like he is in the Poseidome. For example, In Industrial Park, he's directly above Robot Patrick, clipped inside of the chute that dispenses the acid.

@@ridley2172 I'm not sure it's a culling issue, rather it's just not modeled at all. Culling implies it IS modeled, and just has rendering disabled during gameplay.
When I was a kid, the brightness on my old TV couldn't go high enough for me to see Kelp Forest(or at least I couldn't figure out how to change it). I was determined to beat the game though, not 100% but just beat it in general. I had managed to get enough golden spatulas through finding socks, buying them from Mr Krabs, and any other sidequests I could do. Eventually, I completed the base game completely skipping Kelp Forest. Years later, I found my old PS2, hooked it up to my newer TV, and got to play Kelp Forest for the first time as an adult 😂
Just when I thought I knew everything about this game, I found more discoveries in this video. Nice work Gravity. Edit: It should be clarified on Fact 44 that KF03 was a real level at one point, but it was quickly scrapped because they did not have ideas for the level. All we know is that it was a generic Kelp Forest platforming level.

BFBB isn't really a rushed game though? Sure things may have been cut due to deadlines, but that's different from games that are clearly unfinished or sloppy throughout.

10:01 The way I see this more so a drastic shift into overdrive. Normally, you hit the button and the snowball blows up the Thunder Tikis. The explosion actually goes really well with transitioning from the Downtown theme to the Slide theme.
Great video, most of these facts were new to me. Especially fact 48 is something I had never thought of before. Although, it does make sense in hindsight. A few things I know: 1. Completing Lasers are good and fun for you will unlock a new platform with shiny objects. If the area reloads before you can collect those shinies, they will be in their original position again and can't be collected anymore (without cheats). 2. When destroying a Sleepy Time, you can see the remains of the original light bulb used for his beta design. 3. You can access some seemingly OOB rooftops near the second checkpoint in Downtown Rooftops. Which makes collecting the purple shiny on top of that windmill a lot easier. 4. The hidden Duplicatotrons in the Rolling Ball Room and the Ski Lodge can be destroyed using the cruise bubble. Same applies to the one from Drain the lake but it may take a few tries to destroy that one. 4B. The hidden Duplicatotron in ski lodge becomes inactive after destroying the first one. 5. The second Monsoon inside Robot Spongebob is never active. 6. Plankton has voicelines for Spongebob in Sandy's dream, even though he cannot get there in normal circumstances. 7. The Chuck near the Mermelair wall jump is the only Chuck to spawn from a Duplicatotron outside of an ambush. 8. After defeating King Jellyfish, Mr Krabbs had a voice line for Patrick as well but it went lost due to an oversight.
I swear, I keep finding out new things about my favorite game. Sure, there are things I knew about via my countless hours of playing this game like the Jellyfish Lake convos and Patrick in Mermalair Main Lobby, but then there’s quirks like hitting the pipes for shiny objects, the two different Ticket Booth lines, and the Ms Puff fumble in Downtown Streets that I never even knew about
If you groundpound on an object, you can hit the groundpound button again to initiate another groundpound without having to jump first. This knowledge is completely useless but I loved doing it as a kid.

Extra Fact: SpongeBot SteelPants had an unused phase where you fight him as Patrick, you have to throw debris at SpongeBot's Anchor Arm plugs to deflate the Anchor Arms while avoiding his attacks and the debris raining down on you. It was scrapped in both this and Rehydrated.
3:14 Something interesting is that in the movie game I think the opposite is true where if you somehow manage to enter a new area as a unintended character, you'll stay as that character.
You should have mentioned how Bubble Buddy's model is different in the GameCube version than the PS2 and Xbox versions. Could be because of how the GameCube handles transparency? Another interesting version difference is how the Xbox version has many improvements not on the other two systems, better textures, smoother framerate, other stuff. Makes sense considering the PS2's unique architecture made it harder to develop for, and some games suffered as a result. The GameCube is a lot more contemporary with the Xbox specs-wise, but the smaller game capacity definitely meant cutting some corners to make the game fit on those disc. In the right hands, all 3 systems can outperform each other, but despite that, the 6th gen is definitely one of the last generations where each console was really unique, specs and performance-wise. While I'm yapping, all streamed audio (music, voice clips, etc.) in Battle for Bikini Bottom is compressed a little more in the GameCube version.
I remember as a kid I bought the GameCube AND PS2 versions because I had a Wii and wanted to see what the GameCube version is like, and I was surprised to notice that the GameCube has a lot of compression and minor glitches the PS2 version did not have. GameCube version seemed to have a lot of texturing and modeling issues (likely problems specific to that console) and you can tell because a lot of geometry is missing and textures are invisible while walking by them. On the other hand the PS2 has some specific bugs. I noticed on the PS2 that weird audio file glitches would occur that wouldn't on the PS2, like the menu thing were for some reason it starts playing all the game sound effects in order and slowed down. I also noticed the Robo-Bob Boss Cutscene towards the end Robo-Plankton appears within Robo-Bob's head for some reason and it looks unintentional. I always wanted the Xbox version because I wanted to see what little things were off about that one. Do you know if they have separate teams working on all the different versions or it's just slightly modified to have it work on all 3? You're not the only one that wants to yap, lol. This game has so many cool things in it.
In the Mermalair computer, you can find Barnacle Boy, he speaks the computer's lines along with it's voice. This was here likely because the devs didn't feel like making another NPC.
As someone who actively speedran the game for a good two years I'm happy to say 21 of these facts were completely new to me :) I always assume these kinds of videos won't show me much I haven't seen before, but as someone who must have countless hours in modding, I knew you'd deliver! Some other facts also still mentioned small details I was unaware of :)
I still play the same 5 PS2 games from 2003, Spongebob BFBB, Shrek 2, Scooby Doo Mystery Mayhem, Simpsons Hit and Run, and SSX tricky. I really appreciate this video.
Great work! The only ones I knew was 20, the bubble spin pushing around the closet clothes 24, since I didn't figure out the intended order originally so I just backtracked to get it (neat how that's completely viable!), 26, 31, and 50. Respect for the dance animations included, Neverhood's awesome. Love this game, it's clear how much love and passion went into it and seeing all these tiny details that enhance it that much more. Always loved seeing the small models out of bounds. It's just a really solid competent game that does justice to early SB. Can't believe the review scores this got back in the day, it 100% was deserving of that remaster even if the new art style's not to my liking. When I originally played it, I barely did Kelp Forest at all because it was so dark on my TV settings! Wasn't exactly warm and inviting either, but you can get the spatulas elsewhere so that's what I did instead.

I love that you mentioned the Bubble Cruiser Goo Lagoon Robot fact. A little weird and maybe just a weird glitch in my personal copy but if you play G.L. up until before the cave, leave, play the rest of the game until you unlock the BC for the robot, and leave again, you can never enter flying Dutchman or G.L. cave after. Idk why it did it but it always glitches out my game
One glitch I've done that soft locks the game is in rock bottom where plankton tells sandy to activate the lasers to make the platform drop down for the golden spatula if you switch to SpongeBob and hit plankton with the bubble spin AND pressing the talk button at the same time while quickly running back to switch to sandy at the bus stop he will be teleported back the conversation will play as normal but once it ends you won't be able to move and the bus will be frozen at the bus stop
The Mermilair is one of the most interesting levels because it feels unfinished and has a lot of usused things. For example: 1. The reason you go to the Mermilair with BB inviting you in, contradicts their intro scene. 2. BB and MM are in the 2nd part of Mermilair even though they are supposed to be at a doctors appointment. 3. The Patrick Tetter Totter at the beginning of part 2 is extremely hard to get to as Patrick, and it takes you to the Mermilair Computer where he can't do anything. I'm curious what causes the Mermilair to feel so disjointed and what changed in the writing/mapping of the level.
What also doesn’t make sense is that Barnacle Boy tells you that he could use some help in the mermilair when you meet him in the retirement home But then when you go down to the mermilair, he asks why you’re down there and objects to you helping at first

I played this game a lot on PS2 when I was a kid, but I've forgotten most of the more specific gameplay mechanics. While watching this video, I gradually remembered more and more about it. I especially remember finding the Goo Lagoon and Jellyfish Fields levels the best, with the former being my favorite.

Also a Fact 51: For promoting the game, they used a build that features a bugged robot spongebob. There was much I learned from playing with this game, but you literally opened my mind to way more I didn’t know! Amazing video!!! (Also bonus fact *not really useful, but cool to know*, it can’t be done in normal gameplay, but the life guard tower’s light does only one insta damage. when doing an randomizer, an slick spawned as the robot, and it only destroyed the bubble, but never the slick; so the beam doesn’t do constant damage to that area. Slick gets to ruin goo lagoon another day.)

Recently, I’ve heard noises from downtown bikini bottom from the hub world when I get close to the taxi stand. So I turned all music off and I heard screaming, some booms, and police sirens. And I also heard squidward playing his clarinet when I get near his house, I heard ocean waves near goo lagoon’s hubworld taxi, chirping and crickets near kelp forest’s taxi, buzzing of jellyfishes from jellyfish fields, and wind blowing everywhere along with the iconic squeaking of SpongeBob’s shoes whenever I move. I wonder if that’s in the old BFBB game.
I've only watched the intro to my childhood game dozens of times, and yet I'm only now realizing that the Krusty Krab model is straight up not where it should be. It makes sense why they removed it for the sake of that shot though (and potentially also explains why the model behaves differently in the overworld compared to the Dream level, since they couldnt easily move it if it was baked into the level like everything else)
10:05 The reason for this weird thing is really funny. It actually runs the process of doing this weird thing instead of doing the thing we'd expect, and then it does the weird thing. I mean, it's not exactly "haha" funny, lol.

They should've used Patrick's ice cream dream, and have Spongebob do the Adventuring, & Save Patrick at the end of the level from the Robots along the way because Robots are turning his dream into a nightmare. The Beginning has Bubble Buddy.

Barnacle Boy also shows up in the Mermalair computer in Rehydrated, though he cannot be interacted with. He isn’t even textured for some reason.

Edit: It should be clarified on Fact 44 that KF03 was a real level at one point, but it was quickly scrapped because they did not have ideas for the level. All we know is that it was a generic Kelp Forest platforming level.
Is there a source on that? I'd love to see exactly what was said!

@@TheTeaOfLL That's interesting, especially how there isn't an obvious gap between KF02 and KF04 in the game itself - KF02 ends with going into the cave that KF04 takes place in. My assumption then is that it was cut relatively early in development.
I love rushed games sometimes cus they tend to have so many weird quirks and mistakes to find
BFBB isn't really a rushed game though? Sure things may have been cut due to deadlines, but that's different from games that are clearly unfinished or sloppy throughout.
The editing is top-notch, the facts are obscure, the voice over is clear and concise, and it's engaging throughout. Nice work!
7:33 finally after literal years this was brought up, i stumbled across this dialogue once and never remembered how i got spongebob through the caves to rediscover it. although its not really impossible to miss since you can use the cruise bubble for the button protecting the golden spatula
10:01 The way I see this more so a drastic shift into overdrive. Normally, you hit the button and the snowball blows up the Thunder Tikis. The explosion actually goes really well with transitioning from the Downtown theme to the Slide theme.
Great video, most of these facts were new to me. Especially fact 48 is something I had never thought of before. Although, it does make sense in hindsight.
A few things I know:
1. Completing Lasers are good and fun for you will unlock a new platform with shiny objects. If the area reloads before you can collect those shinies, they will be in their original position again and can't be collected anymore (without cheats).
2. When destroying a Sleepy Time, you can see the remains of the original light bulb used for his beta design.
3. You can access some seemingly OOB rooftops near the second checkpoint in Downtown Rooftops. Which makes collecting the purple shiny on top of that windmill a lot easier.
4. The hidden Duplicatotrons in the Rolling Ball Room and the Ski Lodge can be destroyed using the cruise bubble. Same applies to the one from Drain the lake but it may take a few tries to destroy that one.
4B. The hidden Duplicatotron in ski lodge becomes inactive after destroying the first one.
5. The second Monsoon inside Robot Spongebob is never active.
6. Plankton has voicelines for Spongebob in Sandy's dream, even though he cannot get there in normal circumstances.
7. The Chuck near the Mermelair wall jump is the only Chuck to spawn from a Duplicatotron outside of an ambush.
8. After defeating King Jellyfish, Mr Krabbs had a voice line for Patrick as well but it went lost due to an oversight.
I swear, I keep finding out new things about my favorite game. Sure, there are things I knew about via my countless hours of playing this game like the Jellyfish Lake convos and Patrick in Mermalair Main Lobby, but then there’s quirks like hitting the pipes for shiny objects, the two different Ticket Booth lines, and the Ms Puff fumble in Downtown Streets that I never even knew about
If you groundpound on an object, you can hit the groundpound button again to initiate another groundpound without having to jump first. This knowledge is completely useless but I loved doing it as a kid.
I remember doing this as a kid and wondering why it worked sometimes and not on others. Kind of blows my mind a little.

Extra Fact: SpongeBot SteelPants had an unused phase where you fight him as Patrick, you have to throw debris at SpongeBot's Anchor Arm plugs to deflate the Anchor Arms while avoiding his attacks and the debris raining down on you. It was scrapped in both this and Rehydrated.
3:14 Something interesting is that in the movie game I think the opposite is true where if you somehow manage to enter a new area as a unintended character, you'll stay as that character.
You should have mentioned how Bubble Buddy's model is different in the GameCube version than the PS2 and Xbox versions. Could be because of how the GameCube handles transparency? Another interesting version difference is how the Xbox version has many improvements not on the other two systems, better textures, smoother framerate, other stuff. Makes sense considering the PS2's unique architecture made it harder to develop for, and some games suffered as a result. The GameCube is a lot more contemporary with the Xbox specs-wise, but the smaller game capacity definitely meant cutting some corners to make the game fit on those disc. In the right hands, all 3 systems can outperform each other, but despite that, the 6th gen is definitely one of the last generations where each console was really unique, specs and performance-wise. While I'm yapping, all streamed audio (music, voice clips, etc.) in Battle for Bikini Bottom is compressed a little more in the GameCube version.
I remember as a kid I bought the GameCube AND PS2 versions because I had a Wii and wanted to see what the GameCube version is like, and I was surprised to notice that the GameCube has a lot of compression and minor glitches the PS2 version did not have. GameCube version seemed to have a lot of texturing and modeling issues (likely problems specific to that console) and you can tell because a lot of geometry is missing and textures are invisible while walking by them. On the other hand the PS2 has some specific bugs. I noticed on the PS2 that weird audio file glitches would occur that wouldn't on the PS2, like the menu thing were for some reason it starts playing all the game sound effects in order and slowed down. I also noticed the Robo-Bob Boss Cutscene towards the end Robo-Plankton appears within Robo-Bob's head for some reason and it looks unintentional. I always wanted the Xbox version because I wanted to see what little things were off about that one. Do you know if they have separate teams working on all the different versions or it's just slightly modified to have it work on all 3? You're not the only one that wants to yap, lol. This game has so many cool things in it.
In the Mermalair computer, you can find Barnacle Boy, he speaks the computer's lines along with it's voice. This was here likely because the devs didn't feel like making another NPC.

As someone who actively speedran the game for a good two years I'm happy to say 21 of these facts were completely new to me :) I always assume these kinds of videos won't show me much I haven't seen before, but as someone who must have countless hours in modding, I knew you'd deliver! Some other facts also still mentioned small details I was unaware of :)
I still play the same 5 PS2 games from 2003, Spongebob BFBB, Shrek 2, Scooby Doo Mystery Mayhem, Simpsons Hit and Run, and SSX tricky. I really appreciate this video.

Great work! The only ones I knew was 20, the bubble spin pushing around the closet clothes 24, since I didn't figure out the intended order originally so I just backtracked to get it (neat how that's completely viable!), 26, 31, and 50. Respect for the dance animations included, Neverhood's awesome.
Love this game, it's clear how much love and passion went into it and seeing all these tiny details that enhance it that much more. Always loved seeing the small models out of bounds. It's just a really solid competent game that does justice to early SB. Can't believe the review scores this got back in the day, it 100% was deserving of that remaster even if the new art style's not to my liking. When I originally played it, I barely did Kelp Forest at all because it was so dark on my TV settings! Wasn't exactly warm and inviting either, but you can get the spatulas elsewhere so that's what I did instead.

I love that you mentioned the Bubble Cruiser Goo Lagoon Robot fact. A little weird and maybe just a weird glitch in my personal copy but if you play G.L. up until before the cave, leave, play the rest of the game until you unlock the BC for the robot, and leave again, you can never enter flying Dutchman or G.L. cave after. Idk why it did it but it always glitches out my game
One glitch I've done that soft locks the game is in rock bottom where plankton tells sandy to activate the lasers to make the platform drop down for the golden spatula if you switch to SpongeBob and hit plankton with the bubble spin AND pressing the talk button at the same time while quickly running back to switch to sandy at the bus stop he will be teleported back the conversation will play as normal but once it ends you won't be able to move and the bus will be frozen at the bus stop
This is exactly the content I was wanting today. Rare UA-cam recommendation W. Also, wow, I never thought of cheats being a thing.
The Mermilair is one of the most interesting levels because it feels unfinished and has a lot of usused things. For example:
1. The reason you go to the Mermilair with BB inviting you in, contradicts their intro scene.
2. BB and MM are in the 2nd part of Mermilair even though they are supposed to be at a doctors appointment.
3. The Patrick Tetter Totter at the beginning of part 2 is extremely hard to get to as Patrick, and it takes you to the Mermilair Computer where he can't do anything.
I'm curious what causes the Mermilair to feel so disjointed and what changed in the writing/mapping of the level.
What also doesn’t make sense is that Barnacle Boy tells you that he could use some help in the mermilair when you meet him in the retirement home
But then when you go down to the mermilair, he asks why you’re down there and objects to you helping at first

I played this game a lot on PS2 when I was a kid, but I've forgotten most of the more specific gameplay mechanics. While watching this video, I gradually remembered more and more about it. I especially remember finding the Goo Lagoon and Jellyfish Fields levels the best, with the former being my favorite.

Also a Fact 51: For promoting the game, they used a build that features a bugged robot spongebob. You can see screenshots of hillarious big buttons in print commercials. - can also be found on some backs of manuals.
I bet the krusty krab being an entity is so that it can easily be removed for the opening cutscene.

(Also bonus fact *not really useful, but cool to know*, it can’t be done in normal gameplay, but the life guard tower’s light does only one insta damage. when doing an randomizer, an slick spawned as the robot, and it only destroyed the bubble, but never the slick; so the beam doesn’t do constant damage to that area. Slick gets to ruin goo lagoon another day.)

@@conor2001 Turns out OP is actually half-correct, the tree bark is what is using the poop texture. Matter of fact, at the ambush at the Alamo in Sandy's Dream, they reuse the texture for actual piles of sh-- on the ground.

Recently, I’ve heard noises from downtown bikini bottom from the hub world when I get close to the taxi stand. So I turned all music off and I heard screaming, some booms, and police sirens. And I also heard squidward playing his clarinet when I get near his house, I heard ocean waves near goo lagoon’s hubworld taxi, chirping and crickets near kelp forest’s taxi, buzzing of jellyfishes from jellyfish fields, and wind blowing everywhere along with the iconic squeaking of SpongeBob’s shoes whenever I move. I wonder if that’s in the old BFBB game.

I've only watched the intro to my childhood game dozens of times, and yet I'm only now realizing that the Krusty Krab model is straight up not where it should be. It makes sense why they removed it for the sake of that shot though (and potentially also explains why the model behaves differently in the overworld compared to the Dream level, since they couldnt easily move it if it was baked into the level like everything else)

10:05 The reason for this weird thing is really funny. It actually runs the process of doing this weird thing instead of doing the thing we'd expect, and then it does the weird thing.

0:50 This is actually a case of the environment artist not keeping track of their culling (The act of not rendering some polygons if they aren't visible) it is not directly tied to collision which is typically a wrap around the visible geometry, or it could be someone messed up their backfaces.
4:10 This is incorrect, AFAIK you can exit Sand Mountain as Sandy but of course it changes you to SpongeBob, I may be incorrect on that though.

Fact 50 explains fact 5. Its much easier to disable an asset for the cut scene then something that is natively part of the geometry.
