Got to meet and hang out with Allan Holdsworth at the Arlington guitar show in the late 90s. I had become friends with a guy who ran a guitar shop in Lewisville, and bought most of my gear from, who knew Allan and sort of "sponsored" his doing a demonstration at this guy's booth for the weekend. He provided Allan with everything but his guitar. We got to arrive early and hang out while the booth was set up, and Allan got his gear working. I was a bit gob smacked, and had a hard time saying anything, due to having been listening to this guy since Metal Fatigue. He was so nice, down to earth and funny. But my wife, who is *never* impressed with anyone's stature (and she deals with a lot of big wigs in her capacity at her job) just hung out, talked with Allan and cracked jokes. She had him laughing pretty hard on numerous occasions. It was a lot of fun to watch, seeing as how I couldn't think of anything to say. One thing I should say - you'd *never* know he was a living legend, a giant of jazz fusion. He was so down to earth, easy going and humble. Just an ordinary bloke in every way. It's great to see his influence is alive and well.
i saw allan in LA in 2010. the drummer was an hour late, and allan was pissed. he even cursed out loud. the drummer showed up, and played 'fred' with ONE HAND AS HE TEXTED HIS GIRLFRIEND HE WAS FIGHTING WITH. allan was so distracted he totally botched the solo over what is possibly the easiest chord progression for allan. at the end of the solo, he looked at me, and said 'sorry'. lol. i was sitting three feet away from him, his amps were on my table! i was cautious with my drink, kept it on the floor! when i met the errant drummer, i thanked him for showing up, and he withdrew his hand for the handshake. lol
That's how it goes I guess in the performance business. You can't really control everything all the time. I think it's part of the reason why I keep going back to just a simpler setup, there's less stuff that can f******. For example, if I had to be entirely reliant on some specialized instrument... Rather than just you know, a telecaster that's set up pretty decently.... It's like sailing around in the middle of the ocean with no radio.
I saw him first play with George Duke speaking of Ronald. I totally thought he had no business on stage with Allan. The most Ham fisted drummer I ever heard with Allan , trying to showcase Chops he doesn't have and his dynamics are non existent.
Sounds so good yet so little use of pinky! One of Allan's most joyful tunes. Glad I saw him six times times. First time 1979 with Nucleus in Southampton. Mind blowing. One of the best times. Second time IOU, 1980. Barely full London pub ! Last time a local pub in Southampton in 2007. He played Fred. Had a friend not called me to tell me he was playing there I'd have missed seeing him. Right on my doorstep 😢 But I didn't miss him 😊 Well done playing this
why not this one? the more I play and go for crazy styles I never thought Id be able to the more I realize so much of guitar is style. Like, I can sit around practicing scales for years and never end up with this. If you practice stuff like this though you WILL get there. its not on one path of difficulty. that's why BB King never played like this. Ive been playing almost two decades and studies jazz most of that. I thought I had to be a genius to play stuff like this but its not so much theoretical as it is guitarical so to speak. Learn the patterns, practice them, mess with shapes, train your ear to hear this stuff and you can get there.
Prior to coming to your channel I don't think I ever heard of Alan Holdsworth. I finally got around to watching a couple of his videos and now I see why people reference his music when they listen to you.
Could you check out Joe defrancesco .Blues for Bobby C . his Hammond playing is alot like yur playing when gets to the crazy parts . Great acquantance of mine who passed away way too young . Genius just like you❤
My buddy Danny C from Athens, GA just turned me on to you and boy was he right ! He, Jerry and I used to play in the 90's and followed Holdsworth around whenever he was here in the Bay Area. Super down to Earth guys. You come right out of the gate just on fire !
A wonderful surprise that you were nominated Tory! His influences are notable, but there is identity and a unique way of playing in his improvisation and that is gold, what an impressive technique! We will continue here!
This was great. I really loved your stream of consciousness approach and how you developed ideas throughout your improvisation. I saw Holdsworth do a lecture/demonstration once and someone in the crowd asked him about reading music. He responded “reading? I just look at the pictures.” That story revealed a lot about his headspace when making music. That also came through in your playing. 10/10.
Well there's a lot of reasons why I do this, once you get used to it you have a lot more control I feel, and you're less likely in a lot of cases to fall back into the same kind of licks that you always play, I don't know it's kind of a thing you know it's up to the player you know.... Plus the volume between the finger and the tapping is basically the same, so that's another major benefit for me
I like the part where you played the guitar. Lots of fun here with Fred! Enjoyed all the notes, unlike the usual couple of dudes here who feel the need to declare their preferences to be the only acceptable standards of good playing. Got to see Allan in the late 80s on the Atavachron tour, I think. Awesome of course.
That would have been awesome to see.... .... Holdsworth stuff kind of attracts a certain type of purist mindset sometimes, I really like what he did of course, but you know, there are other things in other approaches which sometimes people can't see or don't want to.
Great swing feel on the solo. Tory you operate on 5G while everyone else is struggling to make 4G (if talent and skill were like a telecom system) So much beautiful musical information.
Astonishing Tori. Close your eyes and it could almost be Allan! Would love to see you play over Land of the bag snake from his Soft Machine 1975 period (his finest in my opinion...)
Is the guy who's been listening playing and studying guitar for over 50 years and never surprised when I find someone who can play exceedingly well I've heard a lot of people play Holdsworth I've heard a lot of new kids come out that are wicked fast and all this stuff but I think your tone and you're phrasing even while playing other people's type of music so to speak is far better far more appealing to me. I'm hooked
Thanks, just so you know, everything I'm doing on the guitar, especially here is typically not based on thinking like guitar parts or guitar licks.... I find a lot of people are super focused on what their fingers look like when they're playing, which is fine, and of course it looks nice on Instagram videos... But I'm thinking about the architecture and note choices and things like that, maybe simpler ways to play things more economically etc that kind of thing

even the Tele is surprised on those lines

Ronald Bruner Jr? I think the video is still on UA-cam, Allan and Jimmy seemed pissed af.
Miss you so much Allan! 🙏

Great lines
Tory Slusher, Vince Gill, Tosin Abasi...all-star tour.
Make it happen, internet.
What an odd combination, but I like it
Or Uncle AI.
Very interesting set of techniques. I don't think I've ever seen a guitarist play quite like this.
Amazing tribute to the master, the harmonics passage you do in 2:20 is as beautiful as it is surprising !!!
Just superb. Absolutely beautiful lines.
Very, very nice !
I love the variety of tone that you can get with, just varying finger pressure with both hands. Fabulous work.❤❤❤
Oh come on! That's hardly fair!😂😂
Truly; this is brilliant. ❤

So awesome!!
Crikey! What an unusual style. Sounds great!

Thanks. ...I take multiple approaches, TBH, sometimes it's like roulette, other times there's a method to the madness.
Nice tone! Articulation is really clear, wow , love this jam, reminds me of IOU
Wonderful! ♥
Just awesome, super fluid playing.
Wow, girl, you can absolutely play!! Great job. Congrats on working hard to get this good.
Allan was and always will be the GOAT🎸🤘🏻
This is unreal. I can't play without a pick. Amazing!

If you don’t look you’re not aware of the shift from plucking to tapping. Seamless.
I guess I'm not simply because of the fact that I don't play with a pick.
@@TorySlusherthat’s the trick
TJ Helmerich would be proud of your improv on Allan's masterpiece 👍 and so am I👍
amazing this made me smile, made me think of frank zappa i dont know why as i know nothing but that is good guitar playing mint

Bravo!!!
Great playing!!!
Amazing this is the Best rendition og Holdsworth's tune. She has her own style .
That was beautiful as always! I'd love to see a video of you talking about your thought process on this video.
I might actually do that if it hits 10k fairly quickly....
😳🤯😳 Once again!

Super hearing you tribute a master with such fluidity. Incredible, thank you much!
Guys this is Matteo Mancusos original guitar teacher if you didnt know
He will never play lines as hip as Tory, he is melodically living in the past, Tory is the future.
Love that you fingerpick. In my eyes, it’s the only way to play a guitar.
I can't stand the feeling anymore of the separation from the strings in the right hand which is the side effect of playing with a pick. ⛏️
Tory, your exactly right,l went from guitar to piano because of this
@@Garyfisher-my4ew technically there’s way more separation between you and the piano strings rather than using a pick on a guitar
awesome!
and beautiful flow ;)
Pretty incredible
Such amazing lines.
