Well, I watched the video last night about the rolling Stone top 250 guitar players of all time.... Somewhat amazingly, Holdsworth, Fripp, Michael hedges etc etc etc were not on that list.... So I think maybe it just has to do with plain old popularity. Although, some number of years back I was thinking to myself that, surely it would have hit in the hundreds of thousands after several years... LOL.... Uuuhhhh, not necessarily, apparently
@@TorySlusher You'd get get millions of views by faking playing Van Halen songs in your underwear. That's what popularity means on social media... 😂 Talk about progress.
Great swing feel on the solo. Tory you operate on 5G while everyone else is struggling to make 4G (if talent and skill were like a telecom system) So much beautiful musical information.
SERIOUSLY, rewatching, you're just an incredible drummer. i mean, gary's performance on the original track is possibly my favorite drum moment, but you swing like nobody's business, the solo is just wowsers. i think you're probably thinking of gary's solo while playing?? you seem to capture the spirit.. the guitar playing is deeply sick, of course, it's interesting to hear the solo with a clean tone, and yeah, you're super cute...
I really like drums, not necessarily playing drum kits myself, but watching people understanding the written part of it versus the improvisation in the performance... How it functions with a modern group or jazz fusion group etc. The different styles and players etc. I just would rather be accepted as a finger drummer.
Hi, Tory! I've never posted on your site before, but I've been following it for about a year now. I think you're an amazing musician and you've definitely got your own style; something that's not easy to do in this day and age! Anyway, about a month or so after Allan passed away, we had a tribute concert for him (well actually for his daughters to raise money for funeral expenses) at a club in Chicago. There were a bunch of guitar players and we each had time for two tunes. I chose some of the "easier" ones: "Fred" and "Letters of Marque." I was/am a huge Holdsy fan ever since hearing that Tony Williams Lifetime album, "Believe It!" And I couldn't! I've seen him live a half dozen times... with my jaw on the floor each time! Anyway, I think it's so cool that you're paying tribute to him in your own inimitable way, so THANKS!
It kind of swings already, I mean the original version he did.... Gary Novak would just play like a regular jazz type beat instead of all of the extra stuff that Gary husband and Chad wakerman would do...
Listening on Adam A5X monitors. I can say I knew Tory before she self-combusted (because she was so fire!). heheh I knew Tory before she OD'd (because she was so dope!) ok... trying to be funny. :( Man, you really have those dang arpeggio octaves down. Not just maj or min but extended ones that are kind of like 5 and 6 notes. Almost a full scale but not. How you can navigate chords on the left and soloing is just crazy. I'd be stumbling over my left hand notes and my fingers are totally not long and percussive enough to tap just on my right hand like a piano player. But it's always fun watching you do this tapping magic. I rewatched the Paganini one yesterday. That has so many techniques and ideas. Very cool stuff.
Best part is you keep grooving out on the drum machine and stare away from it. Wonderful cover and yeah, you’re so talented yaddah yaddah yaddah… Someday everyone will see the insane badass in Tory. Can’t believe she doesn’t have like eleventy bajillion followers 😢
Amazing! Gotta say I find this more listenable and inspiring than Holdsworths own album version. Less stressed, more time, more space, more musical. The bass doesn't getting in the way helps a lot. The drumming is stellar. @yamahaglobal should get you on their socials pronto!!
Well thanks, that's an enormous compliment. I kind of like the hard edge to alienation and sort of vibe that holdsworth gave off though... I'm intentionally trying to do more of a Corea acoustic band or Keith Jarrett type thing.... It's kind of this aesthetic, you know plus where I'm shooting in the room it's kind of an intimate thing but it's still kind of a big sound at the same time... Sort of like my own NPR tiny desk setup. That's why I've been using this modern Jazz preset kit and this thing instead of the regular full-on modern acoustic kits, it kind of has that vibe. I would also point out that a lot of the time, since I already have spent so much time developing the whole pianistic approach to comping while you're playing etc that's just how I do a lot of arrangements, it's not even like me trying to impress anyone, it's just that I like the sound, The rhythms, the feel etc the whole approach. It kind of changes your trajectory mentally when you're just playing the lead kind of a thing... You might even have a tendency to play too much.
@@TorySlusher interesting observation about the alienation! I digg that in No Wave, Industrial etc but for Holdsworth I never read it that way. Maybe it's the mixes and productions. I.O.U is ok, but everything later sounds very 80's in a bad way to me.
I don't know if it's really changing anything, I just have more pads and better response, I've already kind of already know how this stuff works, even if it was in my head or just listening to it or looking at the notation etc I used to meticulously program in drum parts, so this is like instant composition in a way
I almost cried listening to this. This is one of my favourite Allan's songs and your phrasing was too smooth... I just came across your channel and I have subscribed.
Very interesting...and lovely as usual! Nothing wrong with trios, right? I will say that as amazing as Chick was, he sounded almost robotic at times. Your playing tends to be more organic to my ear. Anyway, thanks for pulling this off. I would love to hear you play The Sixteen Men of Tain. Would the FGDP work for that tune?
Thanks, I might actually play bass on some tune where there's more going on with that instrument.... I tend to just mostly use the bass guitar as a support instrument, opting to just take solos with the guitar or drums or something, it would be nice to have a bass player collaborator TBH
😂 Just ordered one from Sweetwater. Wonder how many bought this unit because of your videos!? YAMAHA should send you a cut.😅 OK, know my results may vary, but looks fun.
Amazing chops! (and, like always, everything else) You shredded way better than many people who attempt to do such covers with distortion. As we used to say back then, Holdsworht never fails, and also Tory never fails too.
.......That was Great Tory.......my FGDP---30 will be here tomorrow..... can't wait......what kind of bass you're using?.....4 -5 or 6 string .....or bass simulator on your guitar?
Watching unpressured playing at any speed, taking time to think it out where there appears no time, to get past the work to the music. That's coming through as a concept to pursue, even maybe for beginners to see in action.
A stenographer in stereo, two independent statements simultaneously superimposed, creating a whole new world of harmony, l am sorry ,l have to shut up now,see ya!!!!
This is in a good way, so much talent, she covers the world of artists, l started a list of people, and was exhausted in the end ,because she had everyone covered!!!!!
It sounds pretty good on a decent speaker system or with headphones, FYI...
The stereo separation of the new drum device comes out nicely with headphones. Sounds great.
Always listen with headphones. The sound is good, but the playing and the dynamics makes it awesome...
You bet it does,l try to use studio quality headphones with a really nice prononsed lower frequency, that really completes the whole profile
Sounds amazing!
I’ve never seen a court stenographer with so much rhythm
😆... I kind of like that, maybe my cool drummer nickname can be *the stenographer*....
@@TorySlusherThe stenographer RIPS on the guitar. Not sure what the judge would say tho…

Always cracks me up how these geniuses on guitar can play ANY instrument

HATE those geniuses…
Cool as! Captures the guitar/drum duet vibe on head of Allan and Gary from the IOU album.
Now there's two of them.
🫣 my god, they're multiplying

Percussion

That was an extension, not a new realization
Damn you're talented!!! You are rocking my world!
Unbelievable & fantastic.
Outrageous levels of confidence to try this. Even more outrageous levels of earned confidence to pull it off.
Very impressive.
Well done! One of my favorites.
your drum and guitar solo just blew my mind.

Awesome! Love your drummer too!

AI chips in your finger tips? Effortlessly and pleasant, surprises included. Allan who? Those chords toward the end!
'Get' the tune better now, than from AH's rec. Amazing. TY
I'm at 01.21 where the first solo kicks off and I'm thinking "here we go, I'm in for a treat"...🔥
I love the way this starts up... and the rest, too.
Love the interpretation of Allan's tune, I think he would have loved it. I especially liked you swinging it, very cool improv !!

Listening on repeat.
Good on y'all for supporting a fantastic talent.

Would not have thought this a piece for a telecaster fit, but there it is. I really liked I.O.U. and I found that rendition delightful.
This is great. Tons of color in these chord voicings. Love it.
I'm so glad your channel is growing!! Holy crap Tory you just keep coming with the hits and I'm just glad to be here! 🎉❤🎉❤🎉❤🎉
