Chad is definitely awesome on this song. He is one of my favorite drummers. Of course Tony was such a masterful drummer with so much feeling and dynamics. He left us way too young at age 51. And now Allan Holdsworth has left us and he will surely be missed too. RIP Allan and Tony :(

Astonishing in every way. What a band….drummer kills, bassist is incredibly tasty and funky, keyboard player has a great feel and love his patch sound, and Holdsworth is just insane. Just discovered him even though I’ve known OF him for 30 years from guitar mags.

Killer band here but Holdsworth always surrounded himself with immense talent throughout his career.
I’m the same as you, I knew about Allan from my brother’s guitar magazines in the mid 1980’s and my brother played the odd songs track but as a preteen, it was so far beyond me. It wasn’t until just before he passed that I “discovered” him fir myself in my late 30’s. I found out that my brother used to see him pretty much every time he was touring LA since the 90’s. He was such a sonic pioneer!
@@SudsRegal Great comment. My experience exactly - I expect I am a lot older than you. Although I'd heard about Holdsworth for some reason he just passed me by. I actually saw him live here in UK about 2013(?) but it left me a bit cold - seemed too technical. After he died I saw the Beato tribute and decided I had to check Holdsworth out thoroughly. I bought the box set of his remastered solo albums (worth every penny) and just absorbed myself into his music - best thing I've ever done. I never tire of his albums and the amazing thing is that they don't contain any 'fillers' which is extremely rare for an album. Each piece of music is there for a reason imho. Anyone new to Holdsworth - be warned: (rock) guitarists that you previously thought were amazing can sound laughable after experiencing Holdsworth (Jeff Beck excepted).
Took me a bit to understand Holdsworth (Not that anyone truly does. Guy was beyond original.). These days he's solidly on my Mt. Rushmore

And he knows this song inside-out, having been AH's keyboardist for years and on the original recording of the song back in the day with Tony Williams. He does a most excellent solo here. Definitely underrated. I like when he sneaks in little tributes to Herbie on that Tony Williams album especially.

The entire band are off the charts in terms of ability. But the fact that Jimmy plays a bass strung for a right hander *upside down* reminds me of the quote about Ginger Rogers that she did everything Fred Astaire did, but backwards, and in heels.
I was blessed to catch Allan in Northampton, Mass. at Iron Horse. Jimmy and Gary completed the trio. We lost him the next year. I got him to sign one of my homemade hybrids, I so glad I thought to grab the body before I left the house, as it was in pieces at the time. The poor man looked so troubled after the show. We were outside with him after the show as he had a smoke, some moron says to him, "You're my second favorite guitarist after Steve Vai..." Idiot. Allan just looked at him...what was he supposed to say?, "You're my least favorite fan?" RIP Allan...you are so missed.

I had seen parts of Allan’s instructional video multiple times over the years, but a week ago, I finally got it regarding a central concept/ability behind his playing: visualization. In the video, he shows diagrams of scales. I always interpreted the diagrams as Allan showing us how to do what what he does. But that’s not it at all. He’s showing us what he sees. As chords changed, he could visualize applicable scales immediately over the entire fretboard. This puts his other-worldly ability in perspective for me. I can hear the next note or group of notes I’m going to play at any given moment, but I can’t see a map of all of the possibilities that are available at each moment. I think this is how chess masters operate. I loved Allan’s playing from the first time I heard UK’s “Nevermore” on WNEW FM in the NY area in the 70’s. His genius and art were and are a precious gift.

That's right. Allan Holdsworth is I.M.H.O technically the best guitarist of all time. It galls me every time I see one of Rolling Stone Magazine's "100 Greatest Guitarists Ever" polls. Allan is as usual nowhere to be seen on the list. Guess who's #1 (again) - that's right: Jimi Hendrix - that's as boring and predictable and downright wrong as you can get.

@Pa Tero Malmsteen loves and admires him greatly, as do most of the great players in rock, especially the shredders. Shawn Lane thought he was the greatest, and of course, was right.

He and AH go way back - they recorded the original version of Fred on the first New Tony Williams Lifetime album, which by the way is LOADED with the BEST AH solos. Btw, Fred was written by AH for his wife, who's nickname was Fred. Besides the intensity of the solos, the song itself and the chord progression is quite beautiful.
Holdsworth's tone on this one is to die for - so thick and intense, it's that saxophone/violin tone he was forever searching for.

Good grief the two solos are amazing being pushed by the monstrous rhythm section. Holdsworth played so melodically, never a pattern player. Outstanding.

If you like music and listen to it constantly, at some point after listening to more and more complex music, you will inevitably end up here, listening to Holdsworth playing Fred (and many other tunes)... this is the epitome of music.

This tune always gets to me emotionally. I mean, I cry when I hear this. And, knowing that Tony Williams and Allan Holdsworth are gone. Music gets to me. Always has and always will. These musicians are absolutely fantastic. Bass player is awesome. I play bass, guitar, drums, and sometimes piano. But not at this level. I need a century just to get started.

I feel very fortunate and blessed to have been turned on to AH nearly 50 years ago. I was just starting out on guitar at the time and just couldn't conceive of how one could play like that. And I still can't totally conceive of it. His playing was from an alternate universe and we can consider ourselves fortunate that his music lives on. God Bless Allan Holdsworth!

Can't begin to say how much I miss Allan. Got to see him live and close up on about six occasions over the years. Musically mesmerising and a complete privilege to behold.
I’m a 20 year old guitar player who discovered Allan in 2015, and it feels like he slipped through my fingers. I’ll never get to see him live - at least not ‘til I go where he is. All I can do is study him and make him a part of myself.

I got to see this exact band several times live, from up close. Each time, you think you're prepared, but it was always disorienting--in a beautiful way.
I've always thought that Alan Pasqua was a genius player and orchestrator, and the original Tony Williams version of this band would not have gelled without him. Really central to this version of the band as well.

Holdsworth's absence is unspeakably sad for all who really appreciated and loved him; . I did see this band, 3 nights in a row, so I was incredibly lucky, and have been lucky enough to see him many times starting with UK. But the pain of his loss still hurts and always will. Looking forward to the next opportunity to see him live has always been a major motivator for me just in taking inspiration for life.
I was talking to my brother (more a rocker than me, but we both loved Holdsworth, rock, blues, and lots of other types of music), about another more recent sad loss; of Neil Peart, and we were appreciating the fact that Rush was being played and Neil remembered lovingly everywhere from breaks in Amy Goodman's great daily news show, to all types of sporting events, which is very nice.
By contrast, when Allan, the one of a kind genius, and greatest electric guitarist humanity has produced died, I went to a show I think less than a month later at a jazz club, where the pre-show announcer mentioned the sad loss of one of our greats, Larry Coryell, who had passed a couple months before Allan. Nary a mention of the greatest. That angered me but what are you going to do? I thought about shouting something about it, like "Let's not forget we more recently lost the greatest guitarist ever; Allan Holdsworth!" but was too shy, not wanting to make a scene and be the crazy guy shouting a name most of the club probably wouldn't even have known (it was a Larry Carlton show).
But there it is; nothing wrong with Rush or Coryell, in fact I love them, but Allan, the absolute genius, master, and inventor of the most modern and brilliant approach to electric guitar, who played 300 seat clubs after a lifetime of putting out masterpieces and playing incendiary, impossibly great shows, remains relatively obscure; a rare treasure very few realize the value of. Good to see everyone here that does know the value of what we lost, and thank goodness we have the recordings!

The drum riff on this tune kills many a drummer. When I heard it for the first time I was blown away, and spent years trying to learn it. I turned many a drummer onto it who never heard it. When I was finally able to play the thing up to tempo it was like 10 christmases at once.
Those freaking hands!! And ability of course. How is it even possible to improvise at this level???!!! Simply incredible!

I couldn't imagine a line up better than this...Holdsworth worked with the greatest musicians of our time and I love every record and every band he put together, but the strenght and the sound and the interplay of this quartet is really really amaaaaaazing
