A super class act. He was honest with the band. He gave the winner props and admitted that Mangini was the perfect fit. And he had nothing negative to say about anybody or anything. Bobby Jarzombek is a cool and respectful consummate professional. This is a stark contrast to the Derek Roddy interview.

+John Wright I agree with every word you said. Still, it would have been awesome to hear him jam with the band and hear his take on the riffs Rudess had prepared.

@@chessbrainiac To be honest, I've always hated Rudess's candy ass keyboard parts and that same Nintendo synth tone he uses on everything like putting ketchup on steak. The perfect keys player for DT would have been Jon Lord...bless his soul.

If you see Thomas Lang talking about it his points pretty much match Derek's. Thing is, Mangini was picked before anyone else auditioned. They just needed extra footage for the documentary. The situation is similar to what actors experience in auditions, where the person for the part was already chosen, but legislation forces people to hold auditions. Reality shows have this aspect of painting winners and losers based on the end result of something. When you consider the drummers that were picked for the audition, any of them could've walked out of the gig with the position.

Musician are, after professional. When you get called for a new job, it might seem exciting, but you have to think of the risks, and what you leave behind. Bobby is very successful and busy, and as much as I'd like to have seen him at least audition, how he explains it perfectly makes sense

In pop business there is nothing but a professional level (I think so) but in Rock and Metal there are „Bands“( sometimes of Brothers...) and there has to be a fit on the personal level too. There are a few freelancers like Bobby and the Testament Drummer who are playing in nearly dozens of bands as a studio and/or live musician.

It would have been great to see and hear Bobby playing some Dream Theater, but in hindsight it seems clear he made the right choice by not getting involved.
That whole audition seems to have been a very weird thing and it sucks that it appears they weren't totally honest with the drummers involved.

  • @stevej.1428

If DT wasn't being full of themselves and trying to turn the whole DT drummer opportunity into a big "Look at us, we're auditioning the who's who of drummers who should be darn lucky we even called them" PR event, and just said: "Hey Bobby, we know you're an immense talent and even Portnoy thinks you're the shit, we would love to have you in the band and will you come aboard?" He probably would have said yes...even though I think he'd be neutered in DT and it would be a bad fit for him. I mean, does Sabbath back in '78 call Ronnie James Dio and say "Hey, we're auditioning singers, already have few lined up, do you want to give it a try too?" How do you think that would have went? Yup, probably "Let me think about it." Seriously, Bobby should have just said; Go get my DVD, or a Spastic Ink recording, there's my audition right there. Get back to me if that's good enough because I have to take a shit right now.

spot on dude, spot on. Also, I hated to see Virgil on this farce. He owns all other drummers combined and DT should be crawling on the floor to even have the chance to witness him performing their songs but I guess he was too much of a old school DT fan (and always hungry for a million gigs/paycheck) to say no. But yeah, on he went to play with freaking Allan Holdsworth of all people haha. Glad I witnessed that live.

Thanks God he didn't audition and join DT, what a waste of talent would that have been. All the Fates and Arch Matheos stuff his has done since then is musically way superior to what DT have released after Portnoy's departure. Mangini was indeed the perfect fit since they weren't looking for another drummer-musician-songwriter in the vein of Portnoy but rather for a reliable drum machine and in the end they got one. You can always replace a drummer but you can't replace chemistry and DT was always about the chemistry between Petrucci and Portnoy and that's why Post-Portnoy-Theater sucks.
