Ive missed you guys! I know this might not be the most exciting video, but its something ive wanted to do for a long time. Leave a comment on what radio setup you are running, and tell us how you like it!! Stay tuned for Cassies video on Jeep Gear and Gadgets for an install on a TJ/LJ. And as always, we have some cool stuff coming soon, so see you guys next week!
Awesome, love your videos. You actually inspired me to start making Jeep videos. I too have been wanting to upgrade my stock stereo with a touchscreen. Thanks for all the great Jeep stuff. You rock!🤘
I would recommend the Alpine ILX-W650 for Cassie's Jeep. If mounting depth is an issue, the ILX-W650 is only about 3" deep. It doesn't play CD's, but it does everything else your Boss radio does, but it has a 7" touch screen, no external buttons, and it's price tag is also only $300.
The side trim pieces actually can bend/ slide out of the way to give you more room. I was watching another video that showed that. The trim pieces in talking about are the ones on the sides that stick out where you removed the additional 2 screws, then the screw in the center.
Are you sure? I just installed a different radio in my '18 JK-- the new radio fits in the day without the stock metal mount, but without the mount, I have nowhere to screw in the top dash panel screw. So now I need to go back and reinstall the metal mount
The back metal mount us designed to stop the shock of off roads vibrations. Otherwise the radio just hangs from the front plastic mount for which most likely will crack on its own strength under rough road conditions.
wtf I followed these fools and took it out and threw it away it was a total bear and I bent it in the process. Now you are telling me I didn’t have to remove it? Holy hell. What a bunch of bs
I see you've attached the green parking brake wire to a red/white wire on the PAC module. Did the BOSS unit you purchased require a direct connection to the parking brake wire in order to access settings and/or other features? If so, did that green-to-red/white wire on the PAC module do the trick? I'm considering getting a BOSS Audio Elite BE7ACP.WX unit and I'm hoping I don't have to go find the parking brake wire somewhere and tap into it. I'm hoping the PAC RP4-CH11 will sort that out for me. Just curious about your approach to that parking brake wire constraint if you even had it.
I just watched this video again to help me through my install. Got everything hooked up and remembered you said something about the rear speaker outputs not being used. So I pulled up the video again for reference. My 07 Sahara, it wouldn’t play calls through the speakers. So I had to cut the harness back apart and fix it. Thanks for this video.
At 1:42 "it's 2020, let's spicy things up" Year 2020's reply "I've been at it homie". I installed Kicker speakers in my JK three years ago. No issues so far, they sound better too.
Question do you think I will need that extra box if I already have a digital screen. I just want CarPlay. I have a 2018 Jeep Wrangler Unlimited JK Golden Trim Edition.
If I don’t want to use the maestro, will the t-harness still work for my radio? Don’t have the money for everything right now, so I want to do everything slowly.
Hey so I ordered all of this stuff but my head unit doesn’t have subwoofer output level control in the menu? In the manual it shows a setting for it but it’s not there. Does yours have this setting ? Should be a slider
Thank you. Best video yet that explains the challenge of installing an aftermarket stereo in my 2014 Jeep JKU. Beat my head against the wall until I found this one. Well done.
it might be different for a 2014 but i skipped the canbus issue and ran power from the cigarette lighter. haven't had an issue in the last year. im waiting for the Carobotor radio to come out for the jk and ill do the radio ... digital dash combo..
Great video thanks for posting, it helped a ton! Just a thought - if all your speakers are being driven by the rear output and no speakers are attached to the front speaker output, I believe you should set your fade to full rear. Normally you don't want to drive an speaker output when there are no speakers attached.
Really appreciate this video, it wouldn't be my choice for a radio but I'm a bit of an audiophile. This works great for a budget friendly upgrade with all the bells and whistles of the big boys. Great vid Ben!
Hope all is well down in South Texas. I'm glad it didn't head to Houston because we definitely don't need that again this year but thoughts and prayers for all you guys down there. Stay safe.
18:40 Thought Cassie was having a stroke for a moment. I mounted my mic underneath the bezel for the instrument cluster. The bezel location eliminates wind blowing across the mic.
Do glad to see you guys back. I purchased the Lockpick setup with the 4 camera option. Front, rear and 2 underneath cameras. Looks great and economical!
You are such a bad influence, I have the stock, no display radio and always envy others with display radios, now I see how easy it is to install (cough cough) so I'm going to check this out! thanks for making the video.
Hey I just want to say thank you, I’m about to put a boss radio in my ford, before this video everyone was skipping over the wiring. I almost went into the job with job the wire harnesses. You definitely saved me a headache. Truly appreciate it
Installed a double din with CarPlay in my wife’s lj and we both love it. Two suggestions, get Cassie a model that has a volume knob. The push button volume can be a pain when bouncing around. Secondly you can pick up a usb to usb cord that will mount in the dash from the receiver. Gives you a nice clean look like it’s factory and when the phone cord goes bad you don’t have to pull the whole stereo out to replace it
I just installed an Alpine unit in my JK, bought it through Crutchfield so it had the data interface in the kit. One thing that happened and I don’t know if you’ll have the same issue but the interface has to be programmed to work when the doors are off the Jeep. The original one that crutchfield sent had not been programmed and my radio wouldn’t turn off until I plugged the door harness back in to the driver door. They sent a replacement that had been programmed and it works perfectly now.
I have a 2008 2 door jk and it’s my first car I love it and I’ve been watching the channel since I got it and I’ve gotten a lot of great info from your channel, thank you and pls keep doing what you do.
Glad to see you guys back, with that said for guys gals looking for audio equipment I HIGHLY recommended crutchfield.com . I’m am not affiliated but have bought from the several times over the decades. They have options to make all the wires plug and play. Any additional information or parts you might need are either included or available at a discounted price.
Try to keep the tip of the soldering iron clean. You can use a wet sponge and just sweep the tip across it. I also put a little solder directly on the tip because it aids in heat transfer. Your technique to applying solder to the joint and not the iron tip is 100% correct. The small amount applied to the tip conforms to the joint and increases the surface area for heat transfer, it is not the source of the solder to fill the joint. The solder applied to the joint has flux in it that will allow the solder to flow into the joint better. For speakers try to get something with multiple drivers like 2 way. The speaker's ability to produce sound is linked to it's size because higher frequencies have smaller wavelengths so they are best reproduced by smaller drivers. Lower frequencies are best reproduced by larger drivers. A 2 way speaker has 2 different size drivers and a cross over to route the high frequencies to the small driver and the low frequencies to the large driver. Just watch the overall installation height when replacing the stock speakers. Not sure if you knew about it but they also make adhesive lined shrink tube with hot melt glue on the inside diameter. When the tubing heats up and shrinks the glue melts and then solidifies when it cools. This creates a waterproof joint. Water can still seep in with the non-adhesive lined shrink tube. Might not be as important in your dash, but if you are making repairs in the engine bay or anywhere that sees a lot of moisture it is a good idea. I mention it because the Jeep cabin is open and judging from the rust on the bracket you removed that area does see moisture. The install was clean and using solder and shrink tube will make it reliable. Your channels don't disappoint when it comes to doing things the right way.
There are days I want to get a newer Jeep..... Today is not one of them. Keep It Simple Stupid, works well for me and the TJ. BTW there is a kit to put something like this in a TJ. Just my current radio is still working. If it ant broke don't fix it.
Ben! I’m watching this video and going over it talking to the screen. I’ve done it in my 2010 jk and did the exact same thing as you. I added a USB port on the left side cigarette lighter port. Just a cleaner look. I’ve tried to relocate the compass and it never worked so it was removed. If you ever feel foggy you can add a video selector to help with the blind spots on the trails up to 4 cameras.
I used this video as my framework to install my radio on my 2008 jku. My wife got me a different radio for the holidays. I installed it. It works, but my airbag light is on now and wont go off. I wonder if I did something to what ever cable connects to the airbag harness.
i would recommend going to crutchfield to get your car audio will give you full instructions and everything you need in one order also they have a great customer service to help you. I also love Kicker speakers.
Thanks for another great video. I'll have to take look into the BOSS radios. Some friendly advice, Be careful of your handheld placement. If the passenger airbag blows, that handheld is coming at your head. Happy Trails.
I put a similar unit into a 2014 JKU. The module for the steering wheel controls has to be programed. It is not a big deal but I would expect the computer challenged may have problems. In some ways it was simpler because the wiring harnesses are more plug and play with only a few wires needing to be connected\soldered manually. Still a great upgrade and I also noted much better sound without changing the speaker setup. The factory radio must just suck.
Jk Gear ty so much for the info on the hikei my gosh man my jeep is like a sleeper now lol, just got it today, it was a pain in the rear to get down there and installed but man i been driving with a smile on my face this is the best thing since ice cream!!!!! ty ty
Could you give an update on how this radio has held up? I know it's very cheap compared to even most other stereotypical "cheap" touch screens so that has me worried but I'm really looking for a budget radio that just sounds better than stock nothing crazy. If you see this would love to hear your thoughts after some time has passed. Thank you
Hi great video. how has the Boss behaved? Any issues? I'm ready to pull the trigger on doing the same and am looking for an inexpensive/decent quality replacement head piece. Thanks!
So glad you guys are back at it! I need one of these in my 2012. With your absence though.... You owe us a Texas themed spoof video (similar to your wheeling addiction video).
Check out the factory Kicker speaker upgrade. They're plug and play, come with the factory connectors, and are 2 way for better highs. I found the best price on Amazon for the set of (4) 6.5" speakers.
Actually on most jeeps you need a data harness that turns on either infinity or alpine sound system.most jeeps are amplified.the best harness for jeeps is the crux harness comes with antenna adapter and non amplified and amplified system also comes with rear view camera harness if your jeep has factory camera..I've done lots of them.
Great video! I installed the exact radio and all of the gear. Only thing I did different was install the Natika, tire mount camera, and hooked it into the reverse lights. Everything worked as it should. Great job and thanks for the video!
I need a 2 din fully loaded radio with android and Apple car play w/ navigation maybe but definitely needs to have front and rear camera set up to put in my Cherokee XJ for overlanding and daily use but can’t find the best one don’t care about the price right now
On my 02 ranger i got a pioneer cd player.. Nothin fancy but it works. Also got kicker speakers in it sounds good enough for me.. Your new stereo looks sweet. Keep the videos comin..
Love you videos by the way. Question have anyone run into issue 3rd party radio sound not working at times. Need shut car off and turn it back on for it to work or at times the radio shuts off. 2013 Jeep Wrangler
Can we get some info on your safety mods? (Ie: extinguishers and their mounts) thanks! Sorry if I missed it in another video! :-) welcome to TX. Also, we are running an AVH-2400NEX. LOVEEEEEE it! Except the screen doesn’t close bc the dash hangs a HAIR width too low over it. We didn’t install it, so it’s something we will look at when time permits. Just have to be quick about holding tension up on that lip to allow the screen to close back into position. 🤷🏻♀️
Ben you putting a ductless system in the JKU or is the for your shop. Heating n Air is what I do. Funny how that's the first thing I noticed in your video, lol. Happy to see y'all back at it.
I’m running a Pioneer AppRadio4 I believe in my ‘17 JK. Also decided to ditch the OG speakers with some kickers. No external amplifier or anything installed, sounds miles better than it did.
Quick question I added a alpine touch screen in my 07 last year works perfect except when I have my doors off it won’t shut off at all and I checked the accessory power and it is turned on in Jeep computer settings not sure if I’m missing a wire on radio
I just gkt into offloading and me and my wife bought our first jeek and we are setting it up. Your videos have helped alot. If hour ever in Kaufman county Texas pleas epost a video so we can see it.
Can you explain why the radio replacement interface (CANBUS) is required? Will an aftermarket radio not work without it? Concerned as a new unit will be a Christmas present for a relative and would hate for them (or the giver) to have to spend $80 for a wiring harness adapter/interface in order to mount the unit.
I have no idea to the actual reason why. You need the interface if your buying a universal radio. Otherwise you have to buy a Jk specific radio from quadratac or any other jeep site that has them built in
Tip for the soldering iron: make sure the tip points away from you when you set it down. Cassie’s hand looked a little too close to that. I’ve grabbed those things ... yeah, they’re hot.
I ZIPtied my compass unit behind the radio further in the dash, and it actually works better. The issue I had before is that the magnetic mount for my tablet that was above the compass screwed it up. Now that it is mounted further in the dash it works properly.
Is this radio still working well for you? My 11 year old stock radio decided to die on me yesterday so I need to figure out what radio to replace it with. Thanks
How did you guys get the vector bar installed without the nut in the radio? Looking at upgrading my radio in my JK 2014 but I don't want to lose my vector bar.
Ive missed you guys! I know this might not be the most exciting video, but its something ive wanted to do for a long time. OH MY GOD!!! I just bought this radio and there was no videos on how to install it!!! THANK YOU SO MUCH
Know this vids old but how this head unit end up working out for yah in the long run
Great question
I like how Ben says this is hard but he can do a 4 link like it's cake.
The stock metal radio mount is not needed at all! You can ditch it :)
Are you sure? I just installed a different radio in my '18 JK-- the new radio fits in the day without the stock metal mount, but without the mount, I have nowhere to screw in the top dash panel screw. So now I need to go back and reinstall the metal mount

@@johnwest3287 i know this is a bit late but do you think removing the metal mount would be ok for just normal cruising and not heavy offroading?
@@Cyclonnzz yes and as I remember, there is no choice.
wtf I followed these fools and took it out and threw it away it was a total bear and I bent it in the process. Now you are telling me I didn’t have to remove it? Holy hell. What a bunch of bs

Glad y'all are safe after the hurricane.
This is exactly why I bought from Crutchfield. Got everything I needed to fit my JK exactly.
If I don’t want to use the maestro, will the t-harness still work for my radio? Don’t have the money for everything right now, so I want to do everything slowly.

This video makes me glad that I had Best Buy do the install in my WJ (free with purchase of radio)! 😁Definitely a worthwhile upgrade though! 👍
Installed a double din with CarPlay in my wife’s lj and we both love it. Two suggestions, get Cassie a model that has a volume knob. The push button volume can be a pain when bouncing around. My old radio has the power on the volume knob. If you hit a bump while adjusting volume...you turn off your radio. LOL
Video gets a thumbs up because of Cassie!!!! What a cutie! Great video. Have to replace my factory radio, too.

Ben you must have AC in your garage because you ain't sweating in that south Texas heat! My garage would be 120 degrees. Good video!

I’m am not affiliated but have bought from the several times over the decades. They have options to make all the wires plug and play. I want an install video on the mini split in the garage! I knew when you said portable a/c that would not work. Lol
I got JBL speakers and the sounds it's really good and budget-friendly.

Good to see you back. I just took some video today and hopefully will start a jeep channel of my own.
There are days I want to get a newer Jeep..... Today is not one of them. Keep It Simple Stupid, works well for me and the TJ. BTW there is a kit to put something like this in a TJ. Just my current radio is still working. If it ant broke don't fix it.

How did you connect the rear camera?
Ben! I’m watching this video

Thanks for another great video. I'll have to take look into the BOSS radios. Some friendly advice, Be careful of your handheld placement. If the passenger airbag blows, that handheld is coming at your head. Happy Trails.
I bought a Boss radio for my wifes Camry some time ago, worked for 2 weeks and the blutooth quit working, staying kenwood for now on lol
I put a similar unit into a 2014 JKU. The module for the steering wheel controls has to be programed. It is not a big deal but I would expect the computer challenged may have problems. Kinda late, but you said to connect the blue and white (interface connector) to the blue, antenna output or blue/wht rem output..trying to do mine bro
I don’t have a Jeep (although I’d have a Gladiator if the motor has more nuts), but I enjoy watching your channel! Welcome to TX!
I bet you are loving having CarPlay in the JK now. Nice work.
Jk Gear ty so much for the info on the hikei my gosh man my jeep is like a sleeper now lol, just got it today, it was a pain in the rear to get down there and installed but man i been driving with a smile on my face this is the best thing since ice cream!!!!! ty ty
I have the exact same Radio in my JK. I absolutely love it! Sounds amazing with aftermarket SKAR speakers💪🏼🤘🏼
How did you cut those two plastic tabs that the top of the radio pushes up on?
Could you give an update on how this radio has held up? I know it's very cheap compared to even most other stereotypical "cheap" touch screens so that has me worried but I'm really looking for a budget radio that just sounds better than stock nothing crazy. If you see this would love to hear your thoughts after some time has passed. Thank you
Great video! So my 07 JK has the premium sound system so are you sayin that I'll lose the FADE but the sound will still come from the rear speakers?
Hi great video. how has the Boss behaved? Any issues? I'm ready to pull the trigger on doing the same and am looking for an inexpensive/decent quality replacement head piece. Thanks!
How did you guys wire up back up camera and run it? Great video
Can you describe what is parts number beside the unit to properly installation in 09 jeep wrangler
I like putting a touch of Vaseline on the connection befote shrink wrap to chase out all moisture possibility but great soldering except flux😉
If I wanted to bypass the factory amp altogether would I need one of these or will there be an issue with canbus?
So glad you guys are back at it! I need one of these in my 2012. With your absence though.... You owe us a Texas themed spoof video (similar to your wheeling addiction video).
So did you keep the uconnect system??
Check out the factory Kicker speaker upgrade. They're plug and play, come with the factory connectors, and are 2 way for better highs. I found the best price on Amazon for the set of (4) 6.5" speakers.
I know this isn't radio related. When you had your raceline beadlocks. Where those powder coated or plasti dipped.
Thanks
Actually on most jeeps you need a data harness that turns on either infinity or alpine sound system.most jeeps are amplified.the best harness for jeeps is the crux harness comes with antenna adapter and non amplified and amplified system also comes with rear view camera harness if your jeep has factory camera..I've done lots of them.
Great video! I installed the exact radio and all of the gear. Only thing I did different was install the Natika, tire mount camera, and hooked it into the reverse lights. Everything worked as it should. Great job and thanks for the video!

Did you do any updates on this stereo? Still have it? Like it? They now have the marine 7”, think it would be smart? And will the 7” fit?
On my 02 ranger i got a pioneer cd player.. Nothin fancy but it works. Also got kicker speakers in it sounds good enough for me.. Your new stereo looks sweet. Keep the videos comin..
How did you mount your mobile gmrs radio, what bracket setup ?
Love you videos by the way. Question have anyone run into issue 3rd party radio sound not working at times. Need shut car off and turn it back on for it to work or at times the radio shuts off. 2013 Jeep Wrangler
Since your Jeep has a short wheelbase, would it be much cooler if you put the backup camera in the front grill and make it a "trail camera"?
Can we get some info on your safety mods? (Ie: extinguishers and their mounts) thanks! Sorry if I missed it in another video! :-) welcome to TX.
Also, we are running an AVH-2400NEX. LOVEEEEEE it! Except the screen doesn’t close bc the dash hangs a HAIR width too low over it. If you can get your hands on the premium alpine factory speakers on 2017 jk they are perfect or you can try Kicker a lot of positive reviews about it.
Great vid you guys. 👌🏻. I have an 07 Sahara. Can’t wait to update my radio. Looks awesome. Good shit getting wifey involved.
Good video, was wondering what the rack mounted to the upper roll cage is and where you got it?
Molle platform solutions
Ben you putting a ductless system in the JKU or is the for your shop. Heating n Air is what I do. Funny how that's the first thing I noticed in your video, lol. Happy to see y'all back at it.
Year review on stereo? Hold up wheeling?
I’m running a Pioneer AppRadio4 I believe in my ‘17 JK. Also decided to ditch the OG speakers with some kickers. No external amplifier or anything installed, sounds miles better than it did.
Wonder if you could have used one of the Chrysler touch screens? I wanna do this myself and one of those would be nice
Been looking for a cheaper way to upgrade my 09s radio. This was definitely helpful. Thanks dude
Quick question I added a alpine touch screen in my 07 last year works perfect except when I have my doors off it won’t shut off at all and I checked the accessory power and it is turned on in Jeep computer settings not sure if I’m missing a wire on radio
FINALLY a double DIN that I can install! Thanks again, Ben! Your videos have helped a ton, and with 3 little ones, keeps me within my budget!
I just gkt into offloading and me and my wife bought our first jeek and we are setting it up. Your videos have helped alot.
If hour ever in Kaufman county Texas pleas epost a video so we can see it.
I recommend crutchfield for all audio stuff for anything not just jeeps I replaced all speakers and did a head unit awesome experience and good prices
I need one that's more water friendly.. just in case top is off and it rains.. any thoughts or what have people done
Otherwise you have to buy a Jk specific radio from quadratac or any other jeep site that has them built in
Thanks for the video. It now makes sense to the things I need to do and get in order to add a carplay stereo to my 2007 Jeep Wrangler JK. :)
How did you bolt up the 2 center bolts for your vector bar? I was under the impression that it connects to the metal piece you took out.
It does mount (only 1 bolt) to that metal piece.
We have a 08 jku 08 and trying to install a alpine head unit powers on but no sound. 🙈
You got a pic of this? I'm wondering where to move it too if not just remove it totally
Hi, do the subwoofer works with that interface?
Would this work for my JKU 2012? I like the fact that you don't need to program a maestro although I have steering controls
I made a big mistake I bought a cheap Soundstream and ItSucks Dick, do you get Navigation on this radio????
I did the same in my JKU but the double din was bigger than the factory hold in the center dash trim. They are a really nice setup.
Oh, no that's not the same setup I used I went with a full android car stereo.
MB Quart 6.5" separates they kick ass.
I have a question, do I have to buy both connector with harness and connector with steering wheel or can I only buy one?
Does look like a little work but not too bad. Thanks for showing the steps and things needed not needed
We've missed you guys! Next up fixing the LJ door latch haha
I've been waiting for this video... I've been in the market for a double din radio... Thanks for the video
Is this radio still working well for you? My 11 year old stock radio decided to die on me yesterday so I need to figure out what radio to replace it with. Thanks
Would a shallow double DIN chassis radio have fit easier?
How did you guys get the vector bar installed without the nut in the radio? Looking at upgrading my radio in my JK 2014 but I don't want to lose my vector bar.
